Farewell Halloween, here comes Holiday Time
The Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction promises to show you what happens “when two holidays collide,” and Disneyland visitors got to see the same effect on Main Street last week as the Resort Enhancements team started the work of replacing pumpkins and scarecrows with garlands and snowflakes. The HalloweenTime promotion ends tonight with the last of the Mickey's Halloween Party events, leaving a short two-week transition period before the official start of the Christmas holiday season on November 14. New Orleans Square is almost completely decorated for the holidays, trees around the Resort have been strung with lights, and most stores have at least a small selection of holiday merchandise.

The Disneyland portion of the annual Disney Parks Christmas Parade is expected to tape next weekend. DanceTheMagic.com, a website that offers travel packages to dance groups that participate in the filming of the parade, has posted a tentative schedule for the weekend. The participants are scheduled to first perform in a a short pre-parade segment called “Holiday Spectacular Parade” Friday evening around 6:00, before the scheduled 6:30 performance of Mickey's Soundsational Parade. This performance is not part of the ABC television taping, but it's fun to watch hundreds of young dancers make their Disneyland debut.
The taping of the ABC television special will likely take place Saturday morning, at or near park opening. Based on past years, at least some of the floats from A Christmas Fantasy parade will be in a procession down Main Street, and several musical acts will perform on a stage in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle. We have yet to hear any word (official or otherwise) on which performers may be on hand for the taping, but this is usually a good weekend for celebrity-spotting, as the special guests spend time in the parks with their families before and after the taping.

If you visit Disneyland on Saturday, stay clear of Main Street and the Central Plaza hub to avoid the crowds, detours, and traffic control around the filming. If you're hoping to watch the parade taping, get to the park at opening (8:00 a.m. for the general public; 7:00 for guests with Magic Morning access) and bring your patience. The taping can take a while, with numerous takes and retakes to make sure every shot is perfect. Dance The Magic encourages the families of their performers to wear their “favorite fun holiday attire” to watch the taping, so you might want to follow suit if you hope to get on camera.

It appears that both performances of Mickey's Soundsational Parade are canceled for Saturday, likely due to the taping. In past years, the first parade is usually canceled on taping day, but the parade usually returns for the evening performance. This year, there are no Disneyland parades on Saturday, but two parades each Friday and Sunday.
All Aboard for a new Disney Gallery exhibit
The Disney Gallery closes briefly next week to allow installation of a new exhibit showcasing Walt Disney's enduring passion—trains. “All Aboard… A Grand Circle Tour of the Trains of Disney” opens Saturday, November 12 with a special event featuring merchandise from 11 well-known Disney artists, including Dave Avanzino, Jeremy Fulton, Larry Nikolai, Robert Olszewski, and Maggie Parr. Several of the artist will be on hand Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 to sign purchases.
The new collection includes posters, paintings, signs, shirts, drink wear, model trains, and collectibles featuring images from the railroads of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. A selection of the merchandise will also be sold at Walt Disney World. More information is available on the Disney Gallery website.
Thanksgiving dining in Downtown Disney
A few weeks ago, we detailed the Thanksgiving dinner options from the Disney-operated restaurants at the Disneyland Resort. The Downtown Disney restaurants rarely have their menus published more than a few days in advance of the actual holiday, but here are the details available as of today. Contact each restaurant directly for reservations and more information.
- Catal – is offering a three-course menu from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Full menu details are available on the Patina Group website. The meal is $38 (food only) for adults ($19.95 children under 10). Call (714) 774-4442 for reservations.

Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen – is serving a special Thanksgiving menu Wednesday, November 23 to Saturday, November 26 of Thanksgiving week, but menu details are not yet finalized. Call (714) 776-5200 for reservations.
- House of Blues – is serving a special Thanksgiving meal, but menu details are not yet finalized. The restaurant also recently debuted its new “Crossroads at House of Blues” menu by Food Network star Chef Aaron Sanchez. Call (714) 778-2583 for reservations.
ESPN Zone, La Brea Bakery, Naples, Rainforest Cafe, and Tortilla Jo's are all open Thanksgiving day, but will serve their regular menu.
New merchandise promotions
MousePlanet reader Paul Hancock suggested that we add the most recent purchase-with-purchase deals to the weekly update. These promotions usually offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. Disneyland began testing these offers before the 50th anniversary in 2005, and now there is almost always a promotion running somewhere in the Resort. Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and the Downtown Disney shops and Disneyland Resort hotels often feature different offers (such as a backpack in one location, a duffel bag in another) or a variation on a theme (such as a a different color of the same bag depending on where you shop). Paul's suggestion was quite timely, as the Resort introduced new offers last week.

The World of Disney and Disneyland Resort Hotels are offering your choice of a sports duffel bag for $16.95 with a minimum purchase of $25, or a fleece throw blanket for $17.95 with a $40 purchase. The duffel bag is identical to the duffel offered in a previous promotion; the World of Disney has a blue version, and the Disneyland Resort hotels have it in black. The fleece throw blanket is $17.95, and features a winter scene of Sleeping Beauty Castle. I admit to being disappointed in the quality of this throw. I purchased a fleece blanket from an earlier promotion several years ago and still use it regularly. This version is much thinner, and doesn't seem as if it will last more than a few washings. But if you need something to keep you warm at Disneyland when the temperature takes an unexpected dip, these blankets are definitely more affordable than buying a new sweatshirt at the gift shop.

Participating shops at Disneyland have the same Castle throw blanket promotion, and also offer a Mickey Mouse tote bag for $13.95 with a minimum purchase of $25 or more. The tote bag is black with a scatted “Mickey Mouse” graphic in gold foil print.
Reader Cathy said she purchased a Mickey Mouse watch for $17.95 with a $40 purchase at a shop in Disney California Adventure. DCA shops had this offer during the summer, so it may be the same deal or a new design. We didn't see this offer last week, but we'll post an update if it's spotted.

…The Napa Rose restaurant at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel is now accepting reservations for their New Year's Eve dining event, offering two seatings. The 5:00 seating features a four-course meal, and is $100 per person (not including beverage, tax, or gratuity). The 8:30 seating begins with a champagne reception in the Napa Rose Lounge, followed by a five-course meal, and is $195 per person. Live music, party favors, and a “midnight moment” complete the evening. To make a reservation, you must book directly with the restaurant, at (714) 300-7170.

…Workers removed the Plaza Pavilion sign last week as work continues to convert the space to the new Jolly Holiday Cafe. The location has previously housed restaurants, a candy kitchen, and the annual passholder processing center.

- Disneyland Monorail – opening at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday until further notice. This shortened schedule is due to the Buena Vista Street construction in DCA. The monorail operates on a normal schedule on weekends.

Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the dates as November 4–6 (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort – November 14, 2011 to January 8, 2012.
- Candlelight Processional – December 3 & 4. Performances times, narrator and availability (if any) of dining packages have not yet been announced.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 27–29. Registration for the half marathon is now sold out; registration for the family races is still open at the Run Disney website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
