Disney and hotel worker union reach five-year collective bargaining agreement
A four-year contract dispute between the Disneyland Resort and UNITE HERE Local 11 ended last week when the more than 2,000 Disneyland Resort hotel workers represented by the union voted to ratify a new five-year collective bargaining agreement. In a joint statement, the two sides said:
“We are pleased that we were able to craft a fair and comprehensive agreement that works for the Disneyland Resort, and most importantly, for the 2,100 union hotel workers who now have the security of working with a multi-year contract in place. While it has been a long journey, we were able to cooperate and reach compromises that were agreeable to all parties and benefitted the Local 11 cast members who help deliver an unparalleled level of service to our Disneyland Resort guests every day.”
The new contract includes wage increases for most workers, workload reductions for housekeepers, and what a press release termed “job security and seniority protections for both full-time and part-time workers.” Local 11 had previously claimed Disney was trying to eliminate full-time jobs in favor of part-time workers, who would not receive enough hours to qualify for benefits. Most of these contract provisions, including the wage increases, were already implemented this past summer after the union failed to respond to Disney's final offer.
The negotiations were marked by countless protests and demonstrations by Local 11 leadership, including a week-long hunger strike, a rally that shut down streets around the resort and ended with the arrest of union workers dressed as Disney characters, and dozens of informational pickets outside the Disneyland Resort hotels. When the two sides did meet for contract talks, the main sticking point was reportedly healthcare. Local 11 workers were the only Disney employees to qualify for no-cost, full-family health insurance by working an average of just 17 hours a week. Disney wanted to transition those workers into the same “Disney Signature” health plan offered to other employees, and the union strongly rejected that proposal.
Neither side got exactly what they wanted in the healthcare section of the final contract, but workers have more choices. Workers who opt to join the Disney benefits plan during open enrollment are eligible for up to $5,000 in bonuses, plus become eligible for sick pay and additional health and wellness benefits. Workers who opt to stay with the union health care plan will now contribute as much as $520 a year to their premium.
For Disneyland Resort guests, the end of the labor dispute means no more early-morning disturbances from picketing hotel workers, and no threat that workers will suddenly walk off the job during the busy holiday season. But considering it took the two sides almost four years to reach a five-year contract, perhaps they should plan to begin the 2016 contract talks sometime next year.
Here comes Hogwarts
The biggest Disneyland news of the last week really came out of Universal Studios, where officials from Warner Bros. and Universal confirmed that a West Coast version of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was coming to Universal Studios Hollywood. While the new land is not expected to open until 2016 at the earliest, the news has the potential to completely shake up the Southern California theme park scene, especially when it comes to wooing families with Hogwarts-aged children.
The Orlando version of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in Islands of Adventure, the “second gate” of the Universal Studios Florida resort, in 2010. The Orlando Sentinel reported in August that spring attendance for Universal Orlando was up 41 percent compared to the previous year, with the resort setting a 12-month attendance record. The Themed Entertainment Association's 2010 Global Attractions Attendance Report stated that attendance for Islands of Adventure was up over 30 percent compared to 2009, while attendance at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Epcot theme parks dropped 1.5 percent in the same period.
Seemingly in response to the success of the Harry Potter land, Disney recently announced a partnership with director James Cameron to build an Avatar-themed land in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park. Universal countered last week, announcing an expansion of the Orlando Wizarding world. Both Florida projects are expected to open sometime in 2016.
Disney doesn't seem to have anything waiting to challenge the Harry Potter spell in Southern California. The massive Cars Land addition opens at Disney California Adventure in 2012, and will be old news by the time the boy wizard invades Hollywood. The company has already said that there are no plans to bring Avatar to the Disneyland Resort, yet it's unlikely that Disney will allow Universal's project to go unchallenged. It's going to be very interesting to see the next move in this wizard's duel.
It's a small, accessible world again
We reported in October that the wheelchair-accessible boats had been removed from “it's a small world.” According to a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, Disney made modifications to the boats, and were in the “final review and approval phase” before the boats could return to service. Cast members at the ride told us paperwork delays would likely mean the boats would not return to service before the end of the year, but Disney alerted us last week that the boats were back in use.

As opposed to exhibits, arcades and shows, “it's a small world” is one of the few actual rides where visitors can remain in their own wheelchair (other accessible Disneyland rides include Jungle Cruise, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, King Arthur Carrousel, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). “it's a small world” is most popular when the holiday overlay is installed, and several readers expressed disappointment that the accessible boats might not return by the end of the holiday season.

For those curious about the operation of the wheelchair-accessible boat, or who want to know what to expect before they ride, this short video shows the load and unload procedures of the boat. Most manual and electric wheelchairs can fit on the boat. Riders who use electric convenience vehicles or larger manual or electric chairs must transfer to a provided wheelchair at the attraction.
Resort construction update
Some of the scaffolding around the Carthay Circle Theater was removed last week, exposing windows, doors, and a large balcony. The balcony looks large enough for an outdoor patio for the restaurant that will occupy the theater building, and would probably offer a decent view of the parade route directly below.

Over in Cars Land, a trio of trees effectively screens the view of the construction site from the Blue Sky Cellar patio, but you can see that the sign for Mater's Junkyard Jamboree has been installed, along with additional lighting and props throughout the area.

Over at Disneyland, the construction walls around the former Plaza Pavilion have been pushed back a bit, returning some of the much-needed seating area for the adjacent Refreshment Corner. A new Mary Poppins weathervane was installed above the building, the first permanent indication of the restaurant's new Jolly Holiday theme.

Save the Date: MouseAdventure Spring 2012
Are you ready for more MouseAdventure in 2012? Mark your calendars and save the date(s) for our spring events at the Disneyland Resort.
MouseAdventure returns to the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, March 11. Alex Stroup is back to write this event, so expect the unexpected. If you've never played a game written by Alex, you're in for a whole new Adventure.
On Sunday, March 25 we will present a non-competitive “Day at the Park” event. This is ideal for first-time teams who want to get a taste of Adventure before committing to a competitive event, or for returning teams who want to play “just for fun.”
Additional details about both events, including registration dates, price, format, and divisions will be sent out in January, but the contracts are signed, the dates are official, and you can now start to make plans to attend.

…Disneyland will close at 6:00 p.m. tonight (December 12) and tomorrow (December 13) for the annual cast member parties. Disney California Adventure will remain open an extra hour both nights.

…There are still a few days left to vote for your favorite Christmas tree in Downtown Disney. Most of the Downtown Disney merchants decorated a tree for the season, and put them on display near the large Downtown Disney tree outside Compass Books. Vote for your favorite tree by sending a text message to a specified number, and you'll receive a reply with a special offer from a Downtown Disney merchant, like 20 percent off a $50 purchase at ESPN Zone. All of the trees will be donated to local military families next week.

…Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar has two holiday drink specials, the Red-Nosed Zebra (rum, agave nectar, strawberry puree and lemon and lime juices, garnished with cranberries) and the Mele Kaliki-Mocha (iced coffee, cream of coconut, almond syrup and coffee liqueur). The Jungle Cruise-inspired bar has also been decorated for the holidays, making it a required stop on the resort holiday decor tour.

- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation – August 11-12. This D23 event returns to the Disneyland Resort in 2012. Additional details and registration information at www.Disney.com/D23.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |

Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California. Note: this ticket is no longer listed on the Costco website, but you may find it at Southern California Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 21-22, 2011. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. 2011 Southern California CityPass ($276/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and is valid through December 31, 2011. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Rainforest Cafe Safari Club–Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
