Disneyland to celebrate leap year with 24-hour party
The Disney Parks marketing team, faced with the need to fill the publicity gap between the end of the holiday season and several major grand opening events later in the year, apparently turned to the calendar for inspiration. The result: One More Disney Day, a 24-hour leap day party scheduled for February 29 at Disneyland park in Anaheim and the Magic Kingdom park in Orlando. The promotion was teased with a viral video campaign during the last few days of 2011, and announced during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve broadcast Saturday night.
When I wrote about the promotion and the rumors last week, I'd said, “it's unlikely that Disney would focus its entire 2012 campaign on an event that will be over by March.” Several readers reminded me of the short-lived “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion in 2010. While it was expected to run for the better part of the year, it ended after just 10 weeks due to overwhelming demand. In contrast, One More Disney Day has a very definite end date; one reader joked on Twitter that the 2012 campaign should be called, “It's March 1—now what?”
Another reader pointed out that past major campaigns, like the “Year of a Million Dreams” (which actually ran more than 24 months) and “What Will You Celebrate” (which offered free admission on your birthday) were presented in years when there were no major new additions to the theme parks. In 2012, however, Cars Land opens in Disney California Adventure, and the first phases of the New Fantasyland debut in Walt Disney World, so a short, relatively inexpensive marketing campaign that fills the gap and generates a lot of buzz may be all that Disney needed to start the new year.
There aren't a lot of details about the actual 24-hour party; only that both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in Florida will open at 6:00 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday, February 29, and remain open for 24 hours, closing at 6:00 a.m. (local time) on Thursday, March 1. According to an e-mail sent out by Disney, any valid admission ticket will do—there is no special ticket required for this event. We've been told that the final operating schedule for rides, shops and restaurants has not yet been finalized, but don't expect the entire park to remain open the entire 24 hours—the Disney website says, “select attractions, entertainment and services will be available.”
Disneyland has hosted overnight parties before, including a 25-hour party to commemorate the park's 25th anniversary, and an even longer 60-hour event for the opening of Star Tours—but this is the first time parks on both coasts are hosting simultaneous all-night events.
One More Disney Day contest and hotel offer
As part of the One More Disney Day promotion, you can enter to win one of 60 trips to either the Disneyland or Walt Disney World resorts for four people, including 5-day park-hopper tickets, four nights hotel accommodations, a $1000 Disney gift card, round-trip transportation, and other “enhancements” like a PhotoPass package or guided tour. Trips must be taken on “Sponsor's selected dates” between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013, which means there are probably blockout dates.
You can enter once a day, and one winner is chosen from each day's entries. You can enter by texting the word “DISNEYDAY” to 347639 using your cell phone, or by completing the entry form at Disney.com/memoriessweeps.
If you're planning a trip in the next few weeks, the One More Disney Day hotel promotion offers a 4th day and night free when you purchase a non-discounted 3-night, 3-day ticket and hotel package from the Walt Disney Travel Company or participating travel agent. The offer is valid for arrivals most nights between February 26 and March 10, 2012, and must be booked by January 31.
Disneyland resumes fireworks; large crowds celebrate a foggy New Year's Eve
Last week, we reported that Disneyland had suspended its nightly fireworks show due to what Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown called “unforeseen issues.” We now know that a Disneyland cast member was treated at a local hospital for what Brown later described as a “noise-related injury.” The show returned for a Christmas night performance, but was canceled until December 30 while investigators evaluated the incident.

According to the Orange County Register, a worker loading shells for the December 22 show heard a “suspicious noise,” and moved away from the launcher just before a shell detonated inside a tube. No other injuries were reported. Technicians deemed the show safe to return on December 30, just in time for the New Year's Eve celebration. At this time we have no additional information about the cause of the malfunction.

New Years Eve at Disneyland saw the expected large crowds and long lines, along with an unexpected bit of fog that rendered both the early evening and midnight fireworks shows almost invisible from the ground. The fog rolled in before the performance of “Believe…In Holiday Magic,” and the thousands of visitors who packed Main Street U.S.A. could see only a foggy glow where the fireworks should be. Conditions were even worse by midnight, almost completely obscuring the New Year's “Fantasy in the Sky” show.

Disneyland reached capacity around 6:30 Saturday night, closing the gates to new arrivals and allowing only those with a handstamp to reenter the park. Disney California Adventure remained open the entire day, with many visitors taking advantage of a special New Year's Eve “save a sale” ticket that offered admission to DCA on the 31st, plus another day at Disneyland anytime between January 4 and 30 for the cost of a regular one-day ticket. It seemed that a lot of visitors decided to call it a night after watching what they could see of the first fireworks show and realizing they wouldn't be able to see any of the midnight show if they stuck it out, and Disneyland reopened its gates to new arrivals shortly thereafter.

The fog also affected visibility of the “fountains and fireworks” countdown in Paradise Park and the midnight performance of World of Color, and forced the cancelation of the midnight performance of Fantasmic! due to concern about the safety of the performers on the slick surfaces of the stage and watercraft used in the show. Before announcing that the show was canceled, technicians re-ran one of the “Random Acts of Disney” performances that had played between performances of Fantasmic throughout the night. This edition featured the Muppet “Bohemian Rhapsody” viral video projected onto the Rivers of America mist screens, enhanced with added effects from Fantasmic's lasers and light towers. Another version resembled a small-scale World of Color production, with fountains, lasers and the Fantasmic fire effects set to music from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Holiday wrap up
You've probably unwrapped all the presents, drunk all the champagne and even taken the tree to the curb, but the holiday season is still in full swing for one more week at the Disneyland Resort. Crowds will definitely be lighter this week as the holiday travelers and Rose Bowl fans head home, but the end of holiday blockouts for the lower tiers of Disneyland annual passport will likely mean strong crowds Friday night for fireworks.

“A Christmas Fantasy” parade and “Believe…In Holiday Magic” fireworks are presented every night through January 8, with the Wintertime Enchantment light show on Sleeping Beauty Castle and the holiday light show on “it's a small world” happening throughout every evening. Over at DCA, catch Phineas and Ferb's Rockin' Rollin' Holiday Dance Party by day, and ElecTRONica by night before both go onto their reduced winter schedule.

The celebration ends Monday, when both the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder Ranch petting farm close for removal of the holiday decor, and the Matterhorn Bobsleds close for a six-month refurbishment. You have a little more time to catch “it’s a small world” holiday, which will remain open until the Haunted Mansion reopens on January 23 before closing through February 2 for removal of the holiday overlay.
This and That…
…The Jolly Holiday Bakery may serve its first scones this week. Rumors set the first soft-opening date as early as Thursday, January 5, the day the Refreshment Corner and Blue Ribbon Bakery both close for refurbishment.
…The Disneyland Resort Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for the 2011–2012 academic calendar. Ten $5,000 scholarships are awarded to “high school seniors who have demonstrated excellence in volunteerism and leadership and who are committed to making a difference in our community.” A list of eligibility requirements and a link to the application are available on the Community Relations website. If the thought of a $5000 scholarship isn't enough incentive to apply, Disney is also giving two one-day park-hopper tickets to the first 200 applicants.
…MousePlanet reader Oleg pointed us to a Facebook posting about a new music loop coming to Main Street, U.S.A. According to the post, bandleader Dean Mora has arranged and recorded a new playlist to replace the collection of songs that are over 20 years old, and currently heard at Disneyland. A quote attributed to Mora says, “We kept about half of the previous song list, and added new 'old' songs (including 'Maple Leaf Rag' and 'Alexander's Ragtime Band') as well as the 'Married Life' tune from the movie UP. The new music is said to debut on Monday, January 9.

…This weekend saw the final performances of Disney Channel Rocks at Disney California Adventure. The show, performed in Paradise Park, rarely drew a capacity crowd for the concert-style mashup of pop hits from the Disney Channel playlist.

The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation – August 11-12. This D23 event returns to the Disneyland Resort in 2012. Additional details and registration information at www.Disney.com/D23.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $209/$193 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $224/$208 |
Advance Purchase 3-day, One Park Per Day Bonus Ticket ($199/$183) or 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($214/$198) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all three admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from the Disneyland website, this ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ( $5-$25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Ticket may also be available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and participating travel agents. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($95) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. |
|
Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $234/$216 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $249/$231 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket plus $50 Disney gift card ($239.99) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California. Note: this ticket is no longer listed on the Costco website, but you may find it at Southern California Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until October 19, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 21-22, 2011. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We've been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Advance Purchase 4-day, One Park Per Day Bonus Ticket ($219/$201) or 4-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($234/$216) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all four admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. |

First use must be on or before December 31, 2012. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all five admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). If purchased from the Disneyland website, this ticket can be purchased and printed at home the same day you plan to use it (eTicket service). You can also ask to pick up the ticket at Will Call ($5 fee) or have it mailed to your home ($5 to $25 delivery fee, depending on service.) Ticket may also be available from AAA offices in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah (not currently listed at the AAA Web site, you may need to call your local office). Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and participating travel agents. It is best to call and confirm before visiting a location, however. These tickets have a 13-day “fuse,” which means you must use all six admissions within 13 days of the first use, or forfeit the unused days. “Bonus Tickets” include one early admission day (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
