Leap Day means One More Disney Day
Disney's kicks off the “One More Disney Day” Leap Day 24-hour party this Wednesday, February 29 at 6:00 a.m. As mentioned last week, the first 2,000 people to enter Disneyland when the park opens receive a limited edition Mickey Mouse ear hat decorated with the One More Disney Day logo. Disney is allowing those who want to wait overnight for the special souvenir to form a line beginning at 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night. The Pumbaa parking lot will remain open overnight for early arrivals, and a ticket booth will be open before the park opens at 6:00 a.m. for those who need to purchase admission.
In addition to the early bird offer, night owls—or people who are still awake 13 hours later—can enjoy a “Midnight Snack,” sponsored by the Disney Parks Blog. The gathering promises “delicious treats and hot beverages, meet & greets with Disney characters, live music by Denny Moynahan and other surprises to be announced,” but prepare to wait in a long line if you want to be a part of it. There is room for only about 200 people, and hopeful attendees may begin lining up at 10 p.m.
If you'd rather your midnight snack come without a two-hour wait, many of the Disneyland restaurants are whipping up special dishes and have extended operating hours for this event. The Disney Parks Blog posted the full list of eateries open between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., including rare opportunities to eat breakfast at Cafe Orleans or Redd Rocket Pizza Port.
If you missed last year's Annual Passholder parties, the Refreshment Corner is once again offering the mac ‘n cheese hot dog with bacon bits. The Stage Door Café is taking the “gourmet hot dog” concept one step further, with a chili cheese corn dog. Even the Blue Bayou is participating, with a special overnight menu.
Outside the gates, some Downtown Disney eateries open at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning to fuel the waiting crowds before Disneyland opens, and will open again early on Thursday morning.
While Disneyland remains open for 24 hours that day, the Disney website states, “Select attractions, entertainment and services will be available,” indicating that not every ride and restaurant may be open the entire time. A representative for Disneyland we spoke to said, “Nearly all Disneyland park attractions will be available for guests during One More Disney Day. Select attractions will close periodically during the event for routine nightly maintenance. Guests can find attraction information in the Entertainment Times Guide that is provided as they enter the park that day.”
One ride that definitely won't be open is the Disneyland Monorail, and that recently added refurbishment has one MousePlanet reader fuming. Kellee writes:
“The advantage of staying at a Disneyland hotel is transportation and convenience, being able to jump on the Monorail in a matter of minutes, not having to deal with the crowds at the part main entrance and entering the park in Tomorrowland rather than fighting the crowd down Main Street. The price of a Disneyland hotel is well worth it with these advantages. As I have already booked my room for the event (prior to the monorail being added to the refurbishment list) I am very unhappy about this and wanted to let others know this is happening. Closing the monorail during an event where guest will be walking for 24 hours is inconvenient and inconsiderate.”
We expect to learn more about the entertainment scheduled for One More Disney Day sometime today. As has been the recent trend, expect an announcement on the Disney Parks Blog around 11 a.m. So far, the published entertainment schedule looks like a normal week day, with just one performance of Mickey's Soundsational Parade, no fireworks, and no Fantasmic (since the show is on hiatus until March 2).
Disney California Adventure is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, with one performance of World of Color scheduled for 8:15 p.m. The Blue Sky Cellar is scheduled to reopen Wednesday with a new exhibit documenting “The Road to Cars Land,” so be sure to take a break from Disneyland to go see the new displays.

Remembering Ernie McLean
Last week brought sad news that New Orleans Square performer Ernest “Ernie” McLean passed away at the age of 87.
To many Disneyland visitors, the gentleman playing electric guitar in the back corner of New Orleans Square was just part of the show. Some might spare a passing glance as they hurried to their next ride, others stopped for a moment to enjoy the music or chat with the performer.

Few knew that the man holding the guitar had shared the stage with the likes of Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, and has a credit on what many consider to be the first rock and roll song, the 1949 Fats Domino hit “The Fat Man.” Nor did they realize that he was the last person personally hired by Walt Disney, chosen to substitute for the banjo player in the newly formed Royal Street Bachelors trio.
“Ernie was the last of his breed here at Disneyland. He was a blues and rock legend,” said Stan Freese, Disneyland Resort talent booking director. “He was a kind, classy gentleman who never spoke badly about anyone or anything. He loved his job, and we all loved him. His presence will be sorely missed.”
The Six String Bliss podcast conducted an interview with McLean at Disneyland in 2009. Several videos have been posted to YouTube over the years, giving Disney fans and guitar enthusiasts another opportunity to enjoy the music many never knew they'd missed.

Disneyland unveils new charging lockers for small electronics
As MousePlanet reported a few weeks ago, Disneyland is testing a new service offering charging lockers for small electronics. Recently converted are 18 of the lockers located just off Main Street, and we got a chance to check them out this weekend.

The lockers are the size of the standard “small” locker. To rent a locker, choose your locker of choice with a charging cord (if you have a compatible device) or a 120-volt outlet (if you brought your own charger), and pay the initial $2 fee. The kiosk prompts you to set your own combination for the locker, which you then use to open the assigned locker.

The “AC Outlet” locker is equipped with two 120v outlets, a pleasant surprise and really handy if you need to charge two devices at once. The outlets are spaced far enough apart that we were able to plug a ZAGGsparq into the lower outlet with enough room to plug a standard 120 cord into the upper outlet.

The “Adaptors” locker contains one Apple charging cord for iPhones, iPads and iPods, and one micro USB charging cord that fits most Android and Blackberry devices. Again, this allows you to charge two devices at once if you happen to need one of each type of cord. The cords are secured in such a way that they can't be removed from the locker.

The fee is $2 per hour, with the first hour paid in advance. If you return after the initial hour is up, you must return to the kiosk to pay for the additional time before you can reopen the locker.
Expect these lockers to be very, very popular during this week's 24-hour leap day party.
Save at Downtown Disney restaurants during Orange County Restaurant Week
Orange County Restaurant Week runs now through March 3, and three Downtown Disney restaurants are participating in the annual promotion. Each restaurant offers a prix fixe lunch and/or dinner menu, starting at $20 per person. Be sure to mention Orange County Restaurant Week when you make your reservation.
Catal offers a three-course dinner, with two choices each for appetizer, entree and dessert. $40 per person, call (714) 774-4442 for reservations.
House of Blues offers a three-course dinner featuring items from their new Crossroads menu. Dinner is $30 per person, and includes several choices each for appetizer, entree and dessert. Call (714) 520-2334 for reservations.
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen has a three-course lunch menu for $20, and a three-course dinner menu for $30. Call (714) 776-5200 for reservations.
Resort construction update
This week's construction tour begins at the Disneyland Hotel to check out the chandelier and themed seating recently installed in the lobby. The tea cup chairs are just the right size for curling up with a good book, and I could wish they'd installed them somewhere more tranquil than right across from the registration desk. Kids have their own waiting area, with small “thrones” arrayed around a television.
Head into Disney California Adventure past the closed Grizzly River Run ride, and note that Rushin' River Outfitters is getting a facelift at the same time.

Taking advantage of the Grizzly River Run closure to do some maintenance in the retention pool and surrounding buildings, the bridge connecting the Pacific Wharf to Paradise Pier is closed through Monday, March 5. For the next 10 days, the east entrance (between the Boudin Bakery and the former Mission Tortilla Factory) is the only path into Pacific Wharf.

It was a pleasant surprise to see that the Paradise Pier “performance corridor” repaving project outside the Little Mermaid attraction wrapped up bit earlier than originally scheduled, and the walkway is once again fully open. The retheming project continues at the Paradise Pier shops, with the former Man Hat 'n' Beach shop getting a new name and a new sign more in keeping with the rest of the remodeled boardwalk.

With the Blue Sky Cellar (and thus the patio which offers the great view straight up Route 66) closed, we take a long-overdue spin around Mickey's Fun Wheel to get an aerial update on the Cars Land construction. The side of the Cadillac Range that faces Paradise Pier looks nearly complete, at least as viewed from ground level—but from the air you can see that the base of the wall remains unfinished.

From the air, you can also see some exposed metal framing of the rockwork and a clear view of the back of the wall facing Katella Blvd., which is yet to be covered. That side will not be finished to look like rock as the park-facing sides are; instead, the yellow wall you can see in some photos is being extended across the entire back of the structure. Some MousePlanet readers have complained about the still-visible framework seen in construction photos, while others say they will wait to experience the new land in person before deciding if it feels “incomplete.”

Although the Blue Sky Cellar closure restricts the view, the frame for the marquee outside Cars Land looks complete, though no graphics have been applied yet.
At the front of the park, work continues on the new Buena Vista Street shops and restaurants. We expect an official announcement soon from Disney about the restaurant that will open inside the Carthay Circle Theater building, but we've learned that chefs Gloria Tae and Francisco Origel have been tapped to head up the staff. Tae was the chef at DCA's Vineyard Room restaurant until that location closed, and has since been working under executive chef Andrew Sutton at the Napa Rose restaurant where Origel is a sous chef. Though Sutton is in charge of menu development for the new restaurant, it looks like he'll remain at Napa Rose.

Finally, it seems time is running out for the giant elephants standing watch at the entrance to the Hollywood Pictures Backlot. The pachyderms, modeled on those featured in the 1916 silent film Intolerance, may soon be removed from their perch, though the support pylons will probably remain. We don't know what Disney plans to go with the sculptures; perhaps the Hollywood and Highland shopping complex would like another pair to go with the set they have.

This and That…
..The Disney Mobile Magic application is now available for iPhone users through iTunes. This official app provides wait times, entertainment schedules and park maps, but was previously available only to Verizon customers who had Android phones. Now iPhone and non-Verizon users can download the app, though Verizon users have access to exclusive “premium” features like photos, videos and games.
…Downtown Disney hosts a SIGNin' in the Street event the weekend of March 17 and 18, 2012. Described as a “celebration of creativity in the Deaf community,” the two-day event features live performances, movie and television screenings, panel discussions, workshops, meet-and-greet opportunities and special merchandise offers. Attending for three Q-and-A sessions during the weekend is cast of the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, which features hearing-impaired actors Marlee Matlin, Katie Leclerc and Sean Berdy. The full schedule of events is available on the SIGNin' in the Street website.
…Disneyland's Refreshment Corner was scheduled to reopen last Friday, but work continued over the weekend. The restaurant is now expected to reopen today.
…Keeping with a change previously implemented at the Walt Disney World Resort, the Disneyland Resort now refers to the main gate ticket takers as “Park Greeters.”

- ElecTRONica – Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights now through March 10. According to Disney the show continues through “Spring 2012,” but does not currently appear on the entertainment schedule after March 10.
- “One More Disney Day” – Wednesday, February 29. To commemorate leap day, Disneyland opens 24 continuous hours, from 6 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29 until 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 1. After the 24-hour party ends, the park will close for four hours, then reopen at 10 a.m. on March 1. Disney has not detailed which rides, shows, shops or restaurants will be open overnight.
- MouseAdventure Spring 2012 – We will host two MouseAdventure events next spring, a competitive event on Sunday, March 11 and a non-competitive “Day at the Park” event on Sunday, March 25. March 11 event is now sold out, but registration is still open for the March 25 event. Visit MouseAdventure.com for more information.
- SIGNin' in the Street – March 17 and 18, 2012. Described as a “celebration of creativity in the Deaf community,” the two-day event will feature live performances, movie and television screenings, panel discussions, workshops, meet-and-greet opportunities and special merchandise offers. - Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. - Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting at Disneyland Resort – May 26 and 27.
- Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation – August 11 and 12. This D23 event returns to the Disneyland Resort in 2012. Additional details and registration information at www.Disney.com/D23.
- 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31-September 2. Event is now sold out.
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. Registration will open on May 14.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

The ticket is $99 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $59 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Tickets expires June 8, 2012, and are blocked out March 30-April 15, and June 4 and 5, 2012. Rainforest Cafe Safari Club–Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
