Cars Land opening date confirmed
Now that Disney has confirmed Cars Land, its new 12-acre addition to Disney California Adventure park, is opening on Friday, June 15, about the only question remaining is: when can I get in line? In finalizing the grand opening date, Disney also announced DCA (but not Disneyland, don't worry) is closing June 14 for a one-day media preview, similar to the event held just prior to the start of Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration. No word on when or where Disney plans to allow guests wjp want to be the first into Cars Land to start lining up, but this event is sure to draw a bigger crowd than turned out for DCA's 2001 grand opening.
June 15 is also the date Disneyland's Matterhorn is scheduled to reopen with the new three-passenger sleds, and just a few days before the summer blockout season begins for Southern California annual passholders. Ironically, the best days to come visit the new addition to DCA may be Saturdays (typically one of the busiest day of the week) between June 30 and August 18, when all but Premium annual passholders are blocked out.

Still not confirmed are the dates of possible cast member or annual passholder previews. Last month, Disney announced an Annual Passholder showcase to be held March 27 to 29 in Disney California Adventure. Due to vague language in the original Facebook announcement, and despite a later clarification in a Disney Parks Blog post, it seems some passholders still expect this to be a three-day “soft opening” of Cars Land.
To be clear, the event is being held in Stage 17 in Disney California Adventure, and, according to Disney, offers a “special sneak peek of the amazing merchandise, food, entertainment, new costumes and guided tours” coming to both Disneyland and DCA this summer. Passholders will also have the first opportunity to purchase Cars Land merchandise before the land officially opens, but will not be able to ride any of the new Cars Land attractions during the showcase.

It's also a bit too early to know how DCA park hours might change once Cars Land opens, or what kind of priority access vacationers staying at Disneyland Resort hotels may receive. For three months after the Little Mermaid attraction opened in DCA, hotel guests could enter Disney California Adventure 30 minutes early each morning to see the new ride, and also received access to the ride during normal park hours through a “specially created, limited time” Fastpass line.
We would not be surprised if Disney extends a similar offer to hotel guests once Cars Land opens, perhaps granting early access for those who want to ride Radiator Springs Racers, or issuing special Fastpass tickets for Mater's Junkyard Jamboree or Luigi's Flying Tires, rides that are not expected to offer Fastpass service. It's also plausible for Disney to extend the Magic Morning offering to Disney California Adventure, perhaps on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays when Disneyland does not offer Magic Morning.
The official announcement also included a portion of the newest video currently on display in the Blue Sky Cellar preview center, which offered a look behind the wall at both the Cars Land and Buena Vista Street construction sites.
Remembering Robert Sherman
The Disney community lost another legend last week with the passing of Robert Sherman, the older of the Sherman Brothers songwriting duo. His son Jeff first shared the news via Facebook, writing,”My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.”
The Sherman Brothers wrote the childhood soundtrack for a certain generation of Disney fans, beginning with the score for The Parent Trap in 1961. In 1964, Walt Disney asked the pair to create a theme for “it's a small world” for the World's Fair, a tune Disney now claims as one of the most-translated and most-performed songs on Earth.

The duo went on to compose dozens of songs for Disney films, theme park attractions and parades, including the score for Mary Poppins (featuring the infectious “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”); the theme “Miracles from Molecules” for Disneyland's Adventure Thru Inner Space; “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room” for Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room; and “There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” for the Carousel of Progress.
While the Sherman Brothers were best known by Disney fans for their theme park and movie scores, the brothers had a wide-ranging career composing songs for radio, theater and television. Their work included the score for Snoopy Come HomeChitty Chitty Bang BangBeverly Hills Cop 3, a film in which Robert Sherman made a cameo appearance. Robert also had a little-known passion for painting; after moving to England in 2002, he began to exhibit some of his artwork.
The Sherman Brothers have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; were named Disney Legends in 1990; and were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2010 the duo was honored with a tribute window on Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland. Robert Sherman was unable to attend the ceremony in person, but recorded a message to be broadcast at the event, saying, “It is such a thrill to be honored in this way, a window on Main Street, Disneyland. It's an enduring legacy and an acknowledgement of the work my brother Richard and I have contributed, and it is a testament to the notion that with a with a little bit of inspiration and a lot of perspiration, dreams can become manifest.”
The Sherman Brothers' tribute window is in a doorway on the 20th Century Music Shop building on Main Street. The day after Robert's death, a memorial wreath was placed next to the doorway. “Today, on behalf of everyone at Disney, we mourn the loss of an extraordinary talent, Robert Sherman,” said Disney President and CEO Bob Iger in a statement. “One of the world’s greatest songwriters and a true Disney legend, his legacy will endure forever through the magic of his music. From Mary Poppins and It’s a Small World to Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book, Robert, along with his brother Richard, wrote many of Disney’s most memorable and beloved songs, which continue to enchant millions of people around the world to this day.”
Our condolences to the Sherman family on their loss, and our thanks to the Sherman Brothers for their contributions to the world of Disney theme parks.
St. Patrick's Day celebration in Downtown Disney
Following on the heels of Disneyland's Mardi Gras celebration, Downtown Disney is hosting a St. Patrick's Day promotion featuring several restaurants and vendors.
If you want to avoid the pinch of a leprechaun, many of the kiosks in Downtown Disney will happily sell you an emerald-tone accessory. You can also find some St. Patrick's Day merchandise at the World of Disney store, and a Lucky Plaid Teddy at the Build-A-Bear Workshop.
Catal is serving up an Irish-inspired menu at the Uva Bar, featuring potato leek soup, Dubliner grilled cheese sandwich, black and tan battered fish and chips, and milk chocolate Guinness cake. The bar will also offer a selection of Irish whiskeys and beers.
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen is serving up corned beef and cabbage and green beer in the main dining room, plus corned beef and cabbage slaw po' boy sandwiches at the Jazz Kitchen Express.
The House of Blues will also offer St. Patrick's Day food and drink specials, along with live performances by Irish bands from 10:00 p.m. until close on March 15 and 16.
Buena Vista Street construction update
There are less than 100 days until the opening of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street, and the buildings just inside the DCA entrance are nearing completion, at least on the outside. While some are still covered in scaffolding, the tarps have come down from other buildings, and workers are now installing exterior details like windows and electrical fittings. Three marquees were installed on the Carthay Circle Theater. The walls briefly came down from around the Monorail beam last week, giving a look at the start of the new bridge facade.

200 teams double down for MouseAdventure Card Games
Over 700 players turned out this Sunday for MouseAdventure Card Games, our first event for 2012. A new game format sent teams all around the Disneyland Resort to complete 52 different tasks, puzzles, and quests, not counting the trivia and Eye Spy challenges. We plan to publish a full recap of the event after a non-competitive edition of the event on March 25, but we want to congratulate the winners of this weekend's game.

If MouseAdventure Card Games sold out before you could register, there's still time to sign up for our non-competitive “Day at the Park” event, to be held Sunday, March 25. Day at the Park teams will get to work on many of the same quests as the Basic division event, though some elements may be modified or omitted. Teams will receive most or all of the tasks and puzzles at the start of the event, instead of throughout the day. The Day at the Park event is ideal for teams new to MouseAdventure or who just want to play the game without the added pressure of time and competition.
This and That…
…Last Wednesday, the Walt Disney World begin enforcing the return time on Fastpass tickets issued for its four theme parks. Park visitors were alerted to the change with new signs placed near and on Fastpass distribution machines and new wording on the Fastpass tickets. Ever since MousePlanet's Mark Goldhaber wrote about the pending policy “clarification” as it pertained to the Walt Disney World Resort, we've been waiting to see if Disneyland would follow suit.
Though Disney-owned ABC-TV in Los Angeles reported on Thursday that Disneyland had also tightened its Fastpass policy, cast members tell us nothing has changed. Unlike Walt Disney World, there was no change to the language on Disneyland Fastpass tickets, no new signs at the rides, and no problem when a reader used an expired Fastpass to board Space Mountain on Saturday. Disneyland may be waiting to see how the policy change plays in Florida, or may be waiting until Cars Land opens to tighten enforcement.
…Downtown Disney hosts a SIGNin' in the Street event this weekend, March 17 and 18, 2012. Described as a “celebration of creativity in the Deaf community,” the two-day event features live performances, movie and television screenings, panel discussions, workshops, meet-and-greet opportunities and special merchandise offers. Attending for three Q-and-A sessions during the weekend is cast of the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, which features hearing-impaired actors Marlee Matlin, Katie Leclerc and Sean Berdy. …A MouseAdventure crew member witnessed a very unusual event on Sunday: a woman giving birth near the shuttle bus area outside Disneyland. The Orange County Register picked up on the story from our @MousePlanet Twitter account, and reports that Disneyland security, first aid employees, and the Anaheim fire department all responded. After giving birth, the Register reports the unnamed mother and baby were transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. According to our MouseAdventure crew member, it was a baby girl.
…D23 announced last week that the 2013 D23 Expo is returning to the Anaheim Convention Center August 9-11, 2013. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you can not use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $99 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $59 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Tickets expires June 8, 2012, and are blocked out March 30-April 15, and June 4 and 5, 2012. While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the US military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the US Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. Landry's Select Club–Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a few weeks to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a points-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
