Heroes Work Here
The Walt Disney Company plans to “provide at least 1,000 jobs and career opportunities for returning U.S. veterans over the next three years,” part of a new campaign called Heroes Work Here unveiled last week at the company's annual shareholders meeting.
In addition to recruiting veterans through participation in veteran-oriented career fairs and a dedicated website for military candidates, the company-wide initiative will also send Disney VoluntEARS to work with organizations that support veterans and their families, and support a public awareness campaign to benefit the Joining Forces initiative. The first spot was shown during the meeting, and features veterans currently employed by the Walt Disney Company, including cast members from the Disneyland Resort.

ElecTRONica to power down April 15
Disney confirmed last week that ElecTRONica ends its 18-month run on Sunday, April 15. ElecTRONica debuted at Disney California Adventure in September 2010 to promote the then-upcoming release of Tron: Legacy, but the nighttime dance party was extended several times as it proved to be popular with park visitors. In January, Disney announced that a new Mad T Party would replace ElecTRONica this summer.
To help ElecTRONica end on a high note, Disney is hosting a Tron City Dance Crew Challenge. Two dance crews will compete each week, with the four winners advancing to the final dance-off on April 15. The first contest begins tonight, with the TM Juniors facing off against the Instant Noodles to claim a spot in the final competition and a chance to take home the DISC-OBALL trophy.

Now that ElecTRONica is winding down, expect additional information about the Mad T Party to be released in the coming weeks. When Disney posted the audition notice for the Mad T Party band they indicated the show was tentatively scheduled to begin in late May; some cast members expect the new dance party to debut on or before Memorial Day weekend.
Disney Vacation Club adding capacity in California
The most recent issue of Disney Files, a magazine for members of the Disney Vacation Club, DVC announced that members will soon once again be allowed to use vacation club points to book normal hotel rooms at the Grand Californian hotel.
When DVC villas open at a hotel—creating a mixed-use facility with both standard hotel and DVC accommodations—members are typically no longer permitted to use their points to book regular hotel rooms at the same property. However, due to the relatively small number of DVC villas available at the Grand Californian, and the demand by DVC members for rooms at the Disneyland Resort, DVC is making a rare exception to the rule.
Disney only says that the change is happening sometime this spring. A member services representative said their department will get only a 30-minute warning before the points chart is released and reservations open, but said the announcement could happen any day.
DVC members can currently use their vacation points to book rooms at the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier hotel, neither of which have DVC villas.

Resort refurbishment and construction update
MousePlanet reader Jeff M. sent us an updated official list of Disneyland Resort refurbishments that had not yet made it to the Disneyland.com website. There are a few items of interest, including a 7-week refurbishment for Goofy's Sky School, refurbishments of both Ariel's Grotto restaurant and the Cove Bar, and a hint about the potential opening date for the new Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop in Disney California Adventure. Disney has previously said the new eatery would open in “late spring,” but it looks like Saturday, June 2 could be the grand opening. Skip down to see the full refurbishment schedule.

With less than three months until the official opening of Cars Land, Disney this weekend conducted a test of Luigi's Flying Tires using cast members to help put the ride through its paces. (The wet weekend weather probably made this duty less exciting for the cast members scheduled on Saturday.) While little of the ride is visible from Mickey's Fun Wheel, the only decent place from which to even see that far into Cars Land, we noticed what looked like a giant blue beach ball on the ride floor during one test cycle. Archive video of Disneyland's Flying Saucers attraction shows riders batting small beach balls around during the ride; is it possible that Luigi's will have oversize versions for riders to interact with during their ride?

Buena Vista street has suddenly transformed from a row of steel-framed structures to an avenue of recognizable buildings, many with exterior decor, light fixtures and even signs. Additional power poles for the Red Car Line were added last week, suddenly changing the scale of the area. The new poles seem to dwarf the surrounding buildings, but it will be impossible to judge exactly how prominent they will seem until the construction walls are down and the area open to both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

While Grizzly River Run was closed for refurbishment, workers repainted the surrounding shops and buildings in a vibrant new paint scheme, similar to the renovation taking place in the Condor Flats area.

This and That…
…A new contest from Honda and Disney started last week, offering as the grand (and only) prize a 2012 Honda CR-V and a three-day trip to the Disneyland Resort. There's a big display outside bag check and heading towards Downtown Disney, as well as another display inside Innoventions in Tomorrowland. There are four ways to enter this contest, three of which require you to visit the Disneyland Resort in person, and two of which require theme park admission. …In preparation for their March 30 closing, Compass Books in Downtown Disney is holding a store-wide clearance sale, with discounts of 30 to 50 percent. As previously reported, the bookstore and cafe, one of the last original Downtown Disney tenants, is closing to make room for a new Earl of Sandwich location. Compass will continue to operate their 11 Northern California stores.

…The Downtown Disney Sephora just completed a minor refurbishment, but employees at the location tell us the makeover isn't quite finished. Sometime in the next few weeks, the store is adding an in-store “nail bar,” offering no-appointment-necessary manicures for busy vacationers. Based on prices charged by the nail bar opened inside the South Coast Plaza Sephora store earlier this year, expect to pay from $15 for a quick manicure to $50 or more for a full set with nail art. No word on whether they plan to offer any Disney designs.

- ElecTRONica – Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights now through April 15. Disney has confirmed the nighttime event will end on April 15, to be replaced later this spring with the Mad T Party.
- MouseAdventure Spring 2012 – If you missed last weekend's exciting MouseAdventure: Card Games event, we will host a non-competitive “Day at the Park” version on Sunday, March 25. Visit MouseAdventure.com for more information.
- AIDS Walk Orange County – Sunday May 6. The event takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, May 7, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accomodate the event. More information about the walk is available on the event website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting at Disneyland Resort – May 26 and 27.
- Annual Passholder Preview – March 27-29 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This three-day showcase new food, merchandise and attractions coming to both Disneyland and DCA this summer, but is not a “soft-opening” of the soon-to-open Cars Land. - Cars Land grand opening – Friday, June 15.

- D23 Expo – August 9-11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $59 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a few weeks to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a points-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
