Disneyland Set to Close the Carnation Plaza Gardens
Eight months ago at the D23 Expo, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs and Disneyland Resort President George Kalogridis took to the stage during the Park and Resorts presentation to announce a plan to expand Disneyland's Fantasyland. The plan involved closing Carnation Plaza Gardens. A quiet corner adjacent to Sleeping Beauty's Castle and part of Main Street USA., its stage has hosted such legends as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie. The area hosts the weekly Jump, Jive and Booggie Swing Party, and serves as a stage for community music programs, with several school music groups performing there every weekend.

The new plans call for the area to convert into a village square for a princess meet-and-greet called the Fantasy Faire Experience. Featuring a Tangled Tower and Royal Ribbon Festival, the area will retain the stage area, re-themed into a stage for Beauty and the Beast. Although the Fantasyland Theater has hosted a similar venue for the past several years, the Fantasy Faire Experience will give this popular meet-and-greet and merchandise event a permanent home and—although Disneyland has yet to confirm this—free up the Fantasyland Theater for future stage shows.
This past week, Disney announced the closure of the Carnation Plaza Gardens in a blog post. The last day for guests to enjoy this area of the park is April 30, 2012, with construction expected to start soon after the area closes. Disney has not yet confirmed an opening date, but did respond to a question on the Disney Parks Blog confirming that the construction is scheduled to be completed in 2013. During construction, Disneyland hosts the Jump, Jive and Boogie Swing Party at the west stage in Downtown Disney.
Pixar Play Parade Returning to Disney California Adventure
After the Disney California Adventure park construction sent the Pixar Play Parade into hiatus last year, Disney this week announced its return on June 15, 2012. Over the past year, Disney filled the entertainment void with a few pop-up shows, which used some of the Pixar Play Parade elements. The Pixar Pals! Monster Mayhem and Pixar Pals! The Incredibles: Heroes in Training entertained guests several times a day near the Hyperion Theater with a mostly stationary show in which guests participated in activities with Pixar characters. In anticipation of the return of the Pixar Play Parade, Disney is making a few modifications to some of the parade floats. One such modification will be the repositioning of Jack Jack, who use to be positioned on top of the Omnidroid float, which featured a pyrotechnic element. These changes are presumably to allow the taller floats, which were designed for use in 2008, to pass under the newly installed Red Car Trolley cables.
The current shows, The Pixar Pals! Monster Mayhem and Pixar Pals! The Incredibles: Heros in Training, end on April 29, 2012.
The Portal to ElecTRONica Has Closed
ElecTRONica, a popular nighttime dance party at DCA, came to an end this past Sunday night. ElecTRONica started in October 2010 as a promotion for the motion picture TRON: Legacy. The dance party continued to be so popular that it was extended several times during its 18-month run. ElecTRONica ended with the TRON City Dance Crew Challenge, where competing teams were voted for by guests via text message.

Disney Califronia Adventure Construction Update
As we get closer to the June 15, 2012 opening of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land, details of the final projects are becoming more visible over the construction walls. More scaffolding has come down, lights along the amazing Cars Land rock work are being tested and details are emerging all around the newly constructed areas.

… Guests of the Disneyland Resort can now request their dining reservation via email to Disney Dinning. You can send email from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to dine@disneyland.com to request same-day dinning, as well as a reservation to Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Studio Disney 365, can send an email to dine@disneyland.com. Your email requests must include the name of the venue, requested date and meal, number of guests in your party, and your name and phone number. If your request is approved, you receive a reply email from Disney with a confirmation number.
… The character dining menu at Ariel's Grotto in DCA is being expanded to include breakfast, lunch and dinner beginning June 15. As a result, “Word of Color” dining packages will no longer be available at this location after June 14, 2012.
… Celebrate Earth Day next Sunday at Downtown Disney. From noon to 5 p.m. on April 22, enjoy free activities, music and athletic demonstrations. Parking in the Downtown Disney parking lot is free for the first three hours, and you can obtain an additional two hours with validation.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. - ElecTRONica – Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights now through April 15. Disney has confirmed the nighttime event will end on April 15, and be replaced on June 15th with the Mad T Party.
- AIDS Walk Orange County – Sunday May 6. The event takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, May 7, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. More information about the walk is available on the event website.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2012 will be held May 11, 17, 18, 24, 25, 31 and June 1, 7, 8, 14. The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting at Disneyland Resort – May 26 and 27.
- Cars Land grand opening – Friday, June 15.
- Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation – August 11 and 12. This D23 event returns to the Disneyland Resort in 2012. Additional details and registration information at www.Disney.com/D23.
- 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31–September 2. Event is now sold out.
Fall
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. Registration will open on May 15. The event takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. - 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 18–20. No additional details are available.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you can not use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $99 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park–hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $59 compared to the box office price of a two–day park–hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Southern California CityPass ($279/$239) – This pass includes a 3–Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early–entry day), a one–day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one–day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Website or on–site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Website if you're willing to pay the shipping charge. Costco Travel Packages – Many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey's Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
