The green straws are coming – Disney to partner with Starbucks in six theme park locations
Updated 7:21 a.m.
There have been rumblings online for several months now about a Starbucks location coming to the Disneyland Resort. The talk is nothing new – bloggers have been writing about possible Disney/Starbucks partnerships for years, but Disney has steadfastly refused to comment on the rumors.
Today the company confirmed that when Buena Vista Street opens in Disney California Adventure this June there will be a Starbucks located in the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Café – but that's only part of the story. The DCA Starbucks is just one of six themed locations set to open at both the California and Walt Disney World Resorts in the coming year, one inside each of the domestic theme parks.
The Starbucks locations will serve a variety of popular Starbucks drinks and food items along with Disney's own food and beverage offerings. No official additional information about specific locations or opening dates for the other five theme parks was included in the announcement.
Win tickets to a Cars Land preview
Residents of California and Arizona can win a Disneyland vacation, tickets to a Cars Land preview, or Disneyland annual passes in the Coca-Cola Kroger Family Fun Instant Win contest. You have two ways to enter: Either purchase $10 worth of Coca-Cola products from a participating Ralph's (California) or Fry's (Arizona) grocery store using that store's rewards card and follow the instructions on the receipt, or enter online:
- California residents – can win Disneyland Resort Deluxe Annual Passes, 1-day Disneyland Resort park hopper tickets, $50 Ralph's gift cards or tickets to the Cars Land Sneak Peek Private Party on June 14, 2012 (DCA is scheduled to be closed this day, so the private party will likely happen at the same time as Cars Land media preview) by applying at the Coca-Cola Family Fun/Ralphs website.
- Arizona residents – can win a Disneyland Resort vacation, a $50 Fry's gift card, or “Cars Land themed gift” by applying at the Coca-Cola Family Fun/Frys website.
MousePlanet reader disneylandkitty alerted us to this contest on Friday, and several MousePlanet readers have reported winning prizes, including one of the three Disneyland Resort vacations offered to Arizona residents. The contest runs through May 22, 2012 and you can enter once per day. Good luck!
New entertainment to debut at Disneyland and DCA
Along with the much-anticipated opening of Cars Land and the return of the Matterhorn Bobsleds this summer, both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are debuting new entertainment offerings.
Beginning Friday, June 15, and currently scheduled only through Sunday, September 16, a new company of the Voices of Liberty a capella group performs in the lobby of Disneyland's Main Street Opera House. The octet originated in Epcot, where they perform in the rotunda of the American Adventure Pavilion. Auditions for male and female vocalists will be held next week on Tuesday, May 1.

Route 66 in Cars Land is the stage for two new “atmosphere entertainment” shows: Red to the Rescue and DJ’s Dance & Drive. Red to the Rescue looks to be geared towards younger children, with a wayward fire hose and the potential for audience participation. DJ’s Dance & Drive is a mobile street party featuring DJ, one of the characters from the Cars film, and a human host. Both shows are set to begin June 15.

With Carnation Plaza Gardens scheduled to close next weekend for the start of the Princess Fantasy Faire project, Disneyland is reopening the former Festival Arena venue starting Thursday, May 3 to host the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree. According to the Disney Parks Blog, this weekends-only event features music, dancing, crafts, pin trading, and plenty of Disney characters “in their finest Western wear.”
The Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree also hosts Disney Performing Arts groups, the school bands, community dance groups and youth choirs who come to Disneyland to take lessons from Disney's entertainment cast and perform on the Carnation Plaza Gardens. During construction, these groups will continue to perform at Disney California Adventure and now on stage in the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree.
Disney Cruise Line news
Last week, we posted that Disney Cruise Line has decided to eliminate the Palo High Tea option on all four ships. The change begin with the July 22 sailing of the Disney Dream, and rolls out to the Disney Magic starting with the August 10 sailing, and the Wonder and Fantasy starting with the August 13 sailings.
It's only surprising that Disney did not make this move earlier. Brunch at Palo is definitely their most popular meal, even moreso than dinner, and so eliminating the High Tea in favor of a longer brunch service makes so much sense. We know some cruisers love Palo High Tea and will be upset by this, but their complaints will likely be more than offset by the far greater number of people who will be thrilled by more opportunity to book a Palo brunch.
We learned this week that Disney Cruise Line is rolling out a mandatory pre-payment policy for onboard gratuities. Dining room servers, assistant servers and head servers, as well as stateroom hosts and hostesses (housekeeping), earn the majority of their wages from tips. Until this week, Disney offered passengers the opportunity to pre-pay the suggested gratuity (about $12 per day per passenger) before they boarded. Passengers who opted not to pre-pay their gratuities could do so once onboard, but this practice resulted in long lines near the end of every cruise.
Now Disney has announced an automatic addition of the suggested gratuity to the shipboard accounts of passengers who have not pre-paid their gratuities by the time they check in for their cruise. The policy is already in place on the Disney Magic, and rolled out to the Fantasy and Wonder this weekend. Disney has not yet determined when the policy will go into effect on the Disney Dream.
Passengers who wish to increase or decrease the amount of tip, or who wish to change the form of payment (paying cash instead of by credit card) can still do so at guest relations after they board.
This change helps reduce the frequently long lines at guest services, and also eliminates the chance that a passenger might “forget” to arrange gratuities for their service team, both benefiting Disney and their crew. However, some passengers object to being forced to pay the nominal discretionary gratuity before ever boarding the ship, and question whether the service on Disney's ships will be impacted by the change. Will servers and stateroom hosts go that extra mile if they know that their tip is already on the books, or will pre-paid tips result in the same decrease in service often experienced at character dining restaurants and other locations where an automatic gratuity is applied?
Thanks to Mary Kraemer with MousePlanet sponsor MouseEarVacations.com for the heads up on this latest DCL policy change.
Disney California Adventure Construction Update
Though I read every Resort Update published on MousePlanet during my recent vacation, I still wasn't prepared for exactly how much had changed in Disney California Adventure. As I drove to the Resort last week, I passed a Buena Vista Studios truck just leaving property. On that truck were the brick facade and some flat sets from Flynn's Arcade, reminding me that ElecTRONica was well and truly gone.
Stepping though the gates of Disney California Adventure park for the first time in over a month, it felt like I was in a completely different park. Structures I last saw covered in drywall and industrial siding are now finished buildings with beautiful architectural detail, and a network of cables for the Red Car Line forms a new canopy above Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Boulevard. With ElecTRONica now history, the changes on the buildings lining Hollywood Boulevard are even more obvious, with old signs removed and fresh paint everywhere.
There are additional signs of the ElecTRONica to Mad T Party transition in Hollywood, with the former End of the Line Club and empty Flynn's Arcade building waiting for the next overlay. With Mad T Party not scheduled to open until Friday, June 15, it looks like this portion of Hollywood will be under construction for quite some time.

After these photos were taken last week, much of the construction equipment on Route 66 was relocated, giving a new look at Cars Land. Bryan Pugh of the DisneylandLive blog has about 130 photos in his update today, so head over there for exhaustive photographic documentation of this week at the Disneyland Resort.
This and That…
…Following a long refurbishment, the Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor, Candy Palace, and Penny Arcade are all expected to reopen this Thursday, April 26. Carnation Cafe remains closed until June 1.
…A new guided tour called Cultivating the Magic debuts at Disneyland this summer, and cast members begin testing the two-hour tour next weekend. The tour is said to include rides on both the Jungle Cruise and Storybook Land Canal Boats, and focuses on the use of horticulture to convey the theme and story of each land. We don't yet have any information on when public tours begin, or how much they might cost.
The Maleficent dragon statue on the Lego Imagination Center building is still under wraps during construction. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…Disney announced last week that a new Disney-operated store called the WonderGround Gallery opens on Saturday, June 9 in Downtown Disney Anaheim. Described as “the ultimate venue where unique art collections, works from a new generation of artists, and unexpected finds in home and lifestyle merchandise take center stage,” the new gallery opens in the space formerly occupied by Island Charters. The Lego Imagination Center is currently using that space as a temporary store while their main building is under refurbishment, and the WonderGround Gallery will move in once Lego moves out.
While this new store ensures Downtown Disney maintains a 100% occupancy rate, this is the fourth vacancy filled by a Disney-operated store instead of an outside lessee. Two of the three spaces occupied by the former Illuminations store are now operated by Disney (Vault 28 and D Street), and the former Club Libby Lu boutique turned into Studio Disney 365.

…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

2013
- 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 18–20. Registration begins June 12, 2012.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
One Day, One Park Ticket – Regularly $80/$74 One Day Park Hopper – Regularly $105/$99 |
No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them. |

Two Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $158/$146 Two Day Park Hopper – Regularly $173/$161 |
SoCal Resident 2–Day 1–Park per Day ticket ($99) The SoCal Resident 2–Day 1–Park per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before June 8, 2012. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you can not use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $99 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park–hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $59 compared to the box office price of a two–day park–hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Tickets expires June 8, 2012, and are blocked out March 30–April 15, and June 4 and 5, 2012. While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off–property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can–and may–require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether the residency checks occur is an oft–debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. Now for the official fine print:
• TICKET IS BLOCKED OUT March 30, 2012 – April 15, 2012 and June 4, 2012 – June 5, 2012. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if other discounts are available through them.

Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
