Mad T Party debuts at Disney California Adventure
“Soft opening” previews of the Mad T Party began Friday night at Disney California Adventure park, and a large crowd turned out to experience the replacement for the popular ElecTRONica nighttime party. MousePlanet reader Mark Hahn sent us nearly 300 photos of the opening night festivities; we share some of our favorites with you here.

Unlike DCA's two previous nighttime events, the Mad T Party party does not use Hollywood Boulevard—a change necessary to avoid interference with nighttime operation of the new Red Car trolleys. And while the event space now is smaller than it was before, it now incorporates more permanent set pieces. For example, a new “Drink Me” bar replaces the temporary bar set up each night before ElecTRONica, a small performance stage now stands in front of the Mad Arcade in the Stage 12 building, and there is now a much larger stage in front of the Monster's Inc. attraction. Some visitors complained that party crowds made it difficult to even reach the Monster's Inc. and Muppet*Vision 3D attraction entrances, a situation likely made worse by large crowds during this opening, holiday weekend.

Music for the party is provided by the Mad T Party band, with performers dressed as stylized versions of Alice, the Mad Hatter, and other Wonderland residents. Between sets, a DJ wearing White Rabbit ears keeps the music going as attention shifts to other entertainers. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum sport mohawks, Dr. Martens boots, and wrap-around sunglasses and serve as bouncers for the Rabbit Hole, the mist-filled main entrance to the area. A human Slinky in rainbow colors twists into fantastic shapes on the secondary stage outside the Mad Arcade, while stiltwalkers “ride” brilliant pink flamingoes through the crowd.

Two bars and a food truck provide refreshments to the T Party crowd, with signature drinks like the Croquet Tini and Mad Hat-ito ($11.50 each), served in themed souvenir cups. A non-alcoholic cotton candy lemonade ($3.00) is also available, along with assorted Fuze and Coca-Cola beverages. A small seating area with colorful chairs fills the patio outside the Mad Arcade.
The new Mad Arcade is filled with highly themed midway-style games like the “Queen of Hearts Royal Half Court” basketball toss, “Cheshire Cat Smile Smash” bag toss, and “Queen's Croquet” skee ball. Part of the arcade is devoted to the Disneyland Adventure game, the wireless, motion-sensing game for Microsoft's XBox Kinect video game console.
If you're feeling underdressed for the party, a face painting booth and a merchandise kiosk offer outlandish accessories; additional Mad T Party merchandise is sold at the Gone Hollywood store outside the party zone.

The Mad T Party is officially scheduled to debut June 15, but these previews are expected to continue Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights until then.

Carthay Circle Theater and fountain unveiled
More construction walls around Buena Vista Street came down last week, revealing the full exterior of the Carthay Circle Theater, and finally unveiling the Carthay Circle fountain. The theater building houses the new 256-seat Carthay Circle restaurant, plus a private “1901” lounge open only to Club 33 members and their guests. The marquee outside the building reads “Carthay Circle Premier Cuisine,” helping to explain that the “theater” is actually a restaurant.

Reservations for the Carthay Circle restaurant opened earlier this month, and the full menu for the new restaurant is now posted outside the building. Over the weekend, cast members from the new restaurant stood outside the building, chatting with visitors and handing out cards with the number to call for future reservations.

The Carthay Circle Theater is built in the Mission Revival style, and decorated with hand-painted tile, custom iron fixtures, and ticket windows evoking a movie palace. In April, the Disney Parks Blog released a video showing the creation of two tile murals for the building, and they are now in place on either side of the restaurant entrance.

DCA visitors were delighted to discover that the walls around the Buena Vista Street fountain were moved before the park opened Friday, widening the walkway around the construction zone.

New character appearances scheduled for DCA
The Disney Parks Blog released details of new character appearances at Disney California Adventure, starting with a new appearance for some of the characters themselves. Mickey, Goofy, and Chip and Dale were photographed in some new period costumes from the 1920s and '30s. The posting hinted that Mickey would appear in the Red Car News Boys show on Buena Vista Street, much as Minnie appears in the Minnie's Fly Girls Charter Airlines show in Condor Flats.

Stage 17 in Hollywood Land will be used this summer for Dancin’ with Disney, billed as a “fun-filled, interactive party” with “music videos, trivia and surprise character appearances.” Since this location is scheduled to close at 5:00 p.m. every day, we wonder if it might be converted into an additional venue for the Mad T Party if crowding continues to be a concern in Hollywood Land after dark.
The posting also confirmed rumors of a new daytime show using the World of Color fountains in Paradise Bay. The concerts will be conducted by Goofy several times each day.
Finally, it looks like fans of Pixar's Cars will be able to meet Lightning McQueen and Mater outside the Cozy Cone Motel on Route 66. We expect this to be one of the most popular photo locations in DCA through the summer.
Fantasmic 20th anniversary video
If you didn't attend one of the annual passholder parties celebrating the 20th anniversary of Fantasmic, we've posted a video of the special pre-show “sizzle reel” of media clips from Fantasmic's opening cut with “making of” footage of the production. The special opening sequence ends with the show's production credits. This pre-show was only used during the AP parties, and will not be included in public performances of the show.
Resort construction update
With the Cove Bar reopened and the Carthay Circle Theater and fountain revealed, the next scheduled openings are Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop in Disney Califoria Adventure and Carnation Cafe in Disneyland, both slated to be open by this coming weekend. Employee previews of Cars Land begin Sunday, June 3, with some sort of preview on the schedule nearly every day from then until the Friday, June 15 public debut. This really is the final countdown; in less than two weeks, Route 66 welcomes its first paying customers. Personally, I can't wait.

…Online registration for the new Annual Passholder Early Entry program we mentioned in last week's Update has now opened. Last week, Disney also officially confirmed the new Extra Magic Hour program for resort hotel guests. With three early admission programs now offered—one for passholders, a second for Disneyland Resort hotel guests, a third for visitors who have purchased 3-plus day tickets—there is understandably a bit of confusion about who can enter which park early on which day. A full description of all three programs is available on our MousePad discussion boards.

…To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the opening of Trader Sams Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel, Disney released a pair of souvenir tiki mugs on May 25. The ceramic souvenirs—Trader Sam’s Barrel Mug ($18.50) and the Uh Oa bowl ($35)—come filled with a signature cocktail, and are available while supplies last.
…If you're already starting to make vacation plans for 2013, MousePlanet reader MacBaby has shared the dates of the 2013 Grad Nite events at the Disneyland Resort. The parties are scheduled May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 and June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event follows the new schedule introduced in 2012: grads receive admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and then stay to attend a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
…Los Angeles-area radio station 102.7 KIIS-FM is hosting a contest for a “family four pack” of Disneyland Resort park hopper tickets to visit Cars Land. There are several opportunities to win by listening to the station and calling in at specified times, or you can register online to win.
…Disneyshopping.com is offering a 35th anniversary T-shirt for Disneyland's Space Mountain attraction. The limited release shirt is only available through June 3, 2012.

The 2012 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- Cars Land media event – Thursday, June 14. Disney California Adventure will be closed all day for the media preview of Cars Land, but Disneyland and Downtown Disney will remain open.
- Cars Land grand opening – Friday, June 15.
- Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation – August 11 and 12. This D23 event returns to the Disneyland Resort in 2012. Additional details and registration information at www.Disney.com/D23.
- 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 – September 2. Event is now sold out.
Fall
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. The event takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 15, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. Registration was scheduled to open on May 15 but has been delayed – keep watching for details. We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

SoCal Resident 2–Day 1–Park per Day ticket ($99) The SoCal Resident 2–Day 1–Park per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before June 8, 2012. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you can not use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $99 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park–hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $15, a savings of up to $86 compared to the box office price of a two–day park–hopper ticket. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by June 1, 2012. Tickets expires June 8, 2012, and are blocked out March 30–April 15, and June 4 and 5, 2012. While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off–property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can–and may–require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether the residency checks occur is an oft–debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by Sept 30, 2012. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2011 to January 2, 2012; February 17 to 19, 2012; April 2 to 14, 2012; July 4, 2012. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
