Team MousePlanet raises nearly $12,000 for CHOC
Seventy-four members of Team MousePlanet jointly raised $11,626.40 for Children’s Hospital Orange County by participating in the 2010 CHOC Walk in the Park this weekend. The annual 5-kilometer walk winds through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks, and is a major fundraiser for the Orange County hospital. Most of the team participated in person, including several who traveled from out of state to join the walk, while others registered as “Sleeping Bears,” collecting donations that were sent directly to CHOC. The Orange County Register reported that the 2010 walk raised $2 million, and had 14,000 registered walkers (link).

The Disney Bear is back
The Disney Bear is back at the Disneyland Resort, with a new name, a new meet-and-greet location, and a whole new line of merchandise. The Disney Bear was a furry flop in the U.S. when it was first offered at the domestic theme parks in 2002, but has achieved rock star status at the Tokyo Disney Resort, where collectors routinely wait in line for hours to purchase new versions of the bear (known there as “Duffy”) and his costumes. Now Disney has brought Duffy back to the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, and launched a massive merchandise campaign around the critter.

At the Disneyland Resort, Duffy merchandise is offered at Treasures in Paradise in DCA, adjacent to the new Duffy meet-and-greet location. Later this year, Disney expects to build Duffy photo spots around the Disneyland Resort, giving Duffy owners the opportunity to photograph their bear in a unique setting. You will also be able to purchase Duffy popcorn buckets, dessert dishes, kids menus and crispy rice treats, as well as Duffy balloons throughout the Resort. Duffy now even has his own Facebook page (link) and will eventually launch his Twitter account.

MouseAdventure Trick or Treat
Seven hundred players participated in this weekend’s “MouseAdventure Holiday: Trick or Treat” event this Sunday and spent a day solving quests and puzzles around Disneyland Park. The weather was wonderfully cool and we managed to dodge a threatened rainstorm, and many teams proclaimed this to be their favorite event yet. Grading is now underway and we expect to have results announced later this week.

We plan to post a full recap in the next week or so, but I wanted to take an opportunity now to thank all of the players for their support, and especially to thank the MouseAdventure crew—many of whom also helped staff our Walt Disney World event just eight days earlier!
MousePlanet will host two MouseAdventure events at the Disneyland Resort next year. Be sure to visit MouseAdventure.com and sign up for our MouseAdventure newsletter to receive additional information as dates and details are finalized.

DCA’s new skyline and other construction news
This is no Photoshop trick; it’s the new skyline of Disney California Adventure park following the removal of the vertical portion of the former Maliboomer attraction. While workers complete the demolition of that ride, other crews are busy renovating the roof of Pizza Oom Mow Mow; giving a new look to the former Catch a Flav ice cream stand, and removing the tile mosaic at the entrance of DCA.

Local 11’s new tactic: fear
We reported last week that Unite HERE Local 11, the hotel worker’s union that has been in a contract dispute with Disney for nearly three years, had been passing out balloons with anti-Disney messages to visitors approaching the bag check tables on the opening night of ElecTRONica. The union repeated the balloon protest last Friday night, but this time added a new element: As thousands of guests flocked to the Resort Friday night for Mickey’s Halloween Party, union representatives dressed as Disney characters stood at the Harbor Boulevard pedestrian entrance and handed out a flyer with the headline “Keep Your Children Close” and the warning “Places like Disneyland are magnets for ‘pedophiles’ ” The flyer is printed in English and Spanish, features an ominous illustration of a hooded figure, and bears the message, “A service from Unite HERE.” The bottom half of the flyer lists steps parents should take to keep their children safe, including making sure children know to ask cast members for assistance if they get lost.
Unite HERE Local 11 distributed this flyer outside Disneyland last week. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
On Friday night, I posted a photo of the flyer on Twitter and asked, “Has Local 11 gone too far?” Nearly all respondents said the union had crossed a line, using terms like “creepy and misleading,” “completely outrageous,” and “way out of line” to describe the union’s actions. One reader replied, “I’ve been sick of that union’s stunts for awhile now,” and asked, “What can the public do to stop them?” One member asked, “What do they really hope to get accomplished by using these tactics?”
Asked about the flyers, Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown told MousePlanet, “Millions have visited and enjoyed Disneyland Resort over the years,” and echoed the sentiments of some of our readers by saying, “Local 11’s leadership has reached a new low with this reprehensible tactic, and they should be ashamed of themselves.”
The flyer goes on to state that there are 23 registered sex offenders living in Disneyland’s ZIP code. According to the Megan’s Law database, there are also 51 registered sex offenders in Knott’s Berry Farm’s ZIP code, but Unite HERE is seemingly limiting their “service” to patrons of the theme park with whom they are in a protracted contract dispute.
The union also claims that the Anaheim Police were called to the Disneyland Resort 64 times from between 2005 and 2010 to investigate “sex offenses.” Sgt. Rick Martinez with the Anaheim Police Department told me that “Local 11 did request and spent months going through public records.” He said that the records requested by the union included the three Disneyland Resort hotels, the two theme parks and Downtown Disney district, and constituted “tens of thousands of pages” of reports, many of them redacted to protect victim privacy. Martinez was not able to provide specific information about the 64 incidents cited on the union’s flyer, or even confirm the accuracy of that number. Further, he said that “sex offenses” could mean anything from prostitution to indecent exposure, or even consensual sex in a public place like the parking structure. He said that he did not know if any of the calls resulted in an arrest, or if any of the incidents involved registered sex offenders or children under 14.
When we contacted Local 11 spokeswoman Leigh Shelton regarding the veracity of the information on the flyer, as well as to share with her some of the comments we’d received, her official response was, “We don’t have any comment.”
Editorial: It has been suggested that I should not write about this protest, because doing so only gives the union a platform. In covering this contract dispute for the past three years, I’ve tried to maintain a fairly even tone, apparently so well that some readers have complained that I am too sympathetic to the union. While I have a long-time friend who is a member of this union, and have come to know several other members as this has played out, I am no fan of this union, and this latest tactic is just another example of how out-of-touch and desperate I think its leadership has become. While union leaders and shop stewards plot these elaborate protests and demonstrations, the rank-and-file members are left wondering just why there is still no contract. The union can seemingly afford balloons and flyers, but cannot afford to reinstate the sick pay benefit for its members. Meetings with a federal mediator have seemingly produced no results, and the union just keeps ratcheting up their efforts to shame and discredit Disney, without coming any closer to reaching a contract agreement.
While I certainly understand and sympathize with workers over the potential impact any change to their health insurance plan will have on their families, I find it difficult to continue to be objective about the tactics of Unite HERE Local 11. The union leadership needs to abandon these silly and ineffective protests, and instead return to the work of representing their members. And if the union refuses to do so, I think it’s long past time that union members begin the process of decertifying this union, and find more responsible leadership to represent you at the bargaining table.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
