All roads lead to Cars Land
Disney has a long-standing policy of declining to release park attendance numbers, but you have to wonder if company executives aren't wishing they could stand on the rooftop of Flo's V8 Cafe and crow about the response to the billion-dollar makeover of Disney California Adventure. Though DCA never reached maximum capacity during the week after the park's grand reopening, tens of thousands poured through the turnstiles everyday to get a look at the new Cars Land and all of the other changes around the park.
Fortunately for the rest of DCA, the thousands waiting three hours or longer to ride Radiator Springs Racers, and thousands more waiting in line for Luigi's Flying Tires and Mater's Junkyard Jamboree meant that the rest of the park seemed pleasantly busy most days, with waits for Toy Story Midway Mania under an hour, and most other rides posting a wait of less than half an hour.
Disneyland also enjoyed lighter-than-average crowds last week, with most of the “E”-ticket rides posting waits of under an hour this weekend. With most schools now out for the summer, however, TouringPlans.com estimates that both parks will likely be extremely busy this next week.
The opening week Cars Land crowds also snapped up many of the souvenirs created for the new land. The Limited Edition Cars Land music CD is reportedly sold out park-wide (though merchandise cast members say they aren't sure if DCA had received all of the CDs yet, or whether there are more in the warehouse). The souvenir Sipper Cone Cups are also sold out, with the next shipment not scheduled to arrive for a month.

What to expect during Annual Passholder Early Entry
The new Annual Passholder Early Entry program, which lets passholders enter Disneyland or Disney California Adventure an hour before that park opens to the public, began at the Disneyland Resort last week. AP Early Entry is usually offered at Disneyland Park on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at Disney California Adventure Park on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays most days through September 13, 2012.
Annual Passholder Early Entry requires advance online registration—you cannot just walk up to the gate and flash your AP. Availability is limited each morning, and Annual Passholders may only use the privilege once this summer at each park. We asked four MousePlanet readers who attended the first few Early Entry events to share their experiences so you know what to expect if you use this new perk later this summer.
All four readers seem to agree that you need to arrive early to make the most of the extra hour. Tiffany E. attended the first DCA early entry last Tuesday, arriving at the Mickey and Friends parking structure at 5:40 a.m. (the structure opens at 6 a.m. for early entry). After parking, she and her daughter decided to walk to the main entrance rather than wait for a tram, and joined the line at the west bag check tents to wait until check-in opened at 6:30 a.m.
Tiffany T. attended Thursday's DCA early entry. Her family walked from their room at the Paradise Pier Hotel and arrived at the west bag check at 6:30 a.m. Tiffany said “there was already a significant line formed,” and the bag check staff “seemed in no hurry” to screen people.
To check in for the event, you will present the annual passport for each member of your party; a copy of the confirmation you received when you registered for the event helps speed the process. Cast members scan each AP, verify that each person is registered for Early Entry that day, and issue a wristband for each person.
When Doug W. arrived at the East bag check tents at 6:30 a.m. for Saturday's event, he found it was “very organized, lots of CMs to make it go quick.” Chris B. also attended Saturday's event, and got to the west bag check by 6:20 a.m., “where about 20 CMs were waiting to scan all your passes with iPods then once scanned the remaining cast members put a wrist band on your hand. By 6:27 I was in front of DCA entrance waiting in line.”
All four readers entered the park by 7:10 a.m. on their respective days, and all four headed straight to Cars Land. To prevent a stampede through the park, Tiffany T. said, “Just past the Carthay [Circle] Theatre, the CMs stopped the whole crowd with a rope and paced the entire group slowly into Cars Land and all the way back to the entrance of Radiator Springs Racers.” Chris reported a slightly different process on Saturday. “Once at the entrance to Cars Land, Mater and Lightning McQueen led the whole crowd down Route 66; both characters then went to their photo ops.”
Radiator Springs Racers seems to be the first stop for the majority of guests, but the ride isn't always ready to roll. On Thursday, Tiffany T. reported, “My son and I were in the “paced” group headed to [Radiator Springs Racers]. When we reached the entrance, they announced that the racers were not running, but we could go ahead and get into line. As we were walking through the queue, we heard them announce that the racers were running. We kept moving and got fairly close to the loading [when the ride] went down again. We stayed in line and within 5 minutes, it was running again. At that point, it did not go down again while we were in line, and we got on. Success!” Chris reported that the first riders did not board until about 7:20 a.m. on Saturday, and reader Cindy S. posted on Twitter that her party left the line Sunday morning when the ride still wasn't operating by 7:30 a.m.
Of course, there are two other rides in Cars Land, and readers reported that both had no or short lines during much of the early entry hour because most of the guests were in line for Radiator Springs Racers.
All that changes when the park opens to the public at 8:00 a.m.; our readers reported that the wait for Luigi's Flying Tires swelled to as long as 90 minutes once the “day guests” arrived, with the line at Mater's Junkyard Jamboree running as long as 45 minutes depending on the day. Chris pointed out that Tower of Terror, Toy Story Midway Mania and California Screamin' had almost no wait during the early entry hour, and suggested that passholders head to those attractions once the park opens and the day guests flood Cars Land.
Tiffany E. added that, while she enjoyed the Early Entry benefit as a passholder, “I do feel bad for the general public. Between the early annual passholder hours [Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday] and the early hotel guest hours [Monday, Wednesday, Friday], general admission has no chance of getting to Cars Land and Radiator Springs Racers without a huge line. The Fastpass line before 8:00 was filled with early entry people, so even trying to get a Fastpass is near impossible.”
A frequent question about the Early Entry events is the availability of Fastpass. Officially, Fastpass distribution does not begin until the park opens to the public, but we asked our readers to tell us what they saw during their events.
On Tuesday, Tiffany E. said Fastpass distribution did not begin until 8:00 a.m., but that Early Entry guests were allowed to form a line to wait if they wished. Tiffany T. said the same happened during her event on Thursday, but that cast members were trying to discourage guests from getting in line early.
On Saturday, Chris said he walked past the Fastpass line at 8:20 a.m., and saw the return time was already 11 a.m. He joined the end of the line, which stretched as far back as the Animation Building in Hollywood Land, and at 9:25 a.m. received a Fastpass for 7:30 p.m.
According to MousePlanet sponsor TouringPlans.com, Fastpass distribution for Radiator Springs Racers ended for the day around 9:30 a.m. all last week; the earliest was 8:58 a.m. on Wednesday.
The Early Entry offer seems popular with our respondents, with all four saying it is a good addition to the benefits offered to passholders. Tiffany E. said “It makes the new increase on my pass seem a little more worth the cost if I can get such extras.” All four also said they'd like to see the offer extended beyond the summer, but perhaps with some changes. Doug said the “6:30 a.m. arrival is rough, especially with kids,” and thinks the event would be more enjoyable on days when the park doesn't open to the public until 9 or 10. Tiffany E. said she'd like passholders to be able to use the benefit more frequently, “maybe even every three months—that way you can do it at least four times a year.” Chris would like there to be fewer passholders admitted each day, saying he felt like there were just a few too many passholders on Saturday. “I got on all three rides since I was in front of the RSR line queue,” he said, “but I know the end of the line waited the whole early hour for RSR.”
Tiffany T. also used the AP Early Entry benefit to visit Disneyland on Wednesday, and said the park was empty. “We basically had Disneyland to ourselves! It was amazing!” Doug said he is looking forward to using his benefit at Disneyland on a future visit, “so I can enjoy a very easy first hour in the park.” MousePad member Swanie used her Early Entry benefit on Friday, and said, “I have photos of an empty Fantasyland and we walked on everything until close to 9:00am. In fact, we had ridden everything we wanted to by 10:30.”
As always, operational policies are subject to change. In fact, Swanie reports that she and her family were asked to test an alternate verification and wristband process during Friday's early entry period at Disneyland, so it seems that park managers are actively trying to make the process easier for both passholders and cast members.
The Orange County Register reports that Knott's Berry Farm launched its own version of an AP Early Entry program last week.

Celebrating the 4th of July at the Disneyland Resort
For the past two years, Disneyland has tried to spread out the Independence Day crowds by scheduling the holiday fireworks show (with the tongue-straining name of “Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky”) on four nights leading up to July 4. The plan worked so well in 2010 and 2011 that Disney will do it again this year, presenting the show Sunday, July 1 through Wednesday, July 4 at 9:30 p.m. each night.
The patriotic fireworks replace “Magical,” Disney’s nighttime fireworks show, which resumes on Thursday, July 5.

Disneyland's Fantasmic is on the summer schedule, with performances at 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly. With the holiday falling mid-week, Disneyland has not officially scheduled a third performance for July 4. As always, park managers may add another performance if park attendance reaches a certain threshold.
The Flag Retreat Ceremony is often especially well-attended on July 4. The ceremony takes place around 5:00 p.m. in Town Square.
Last year, Disney California Adventure presented an Independence Day “preshow” before the scheduled performances of the World of Color. We have not yet heard if the pre-show is on the schedule for 2012; check next week's Update for the latest holiday information.
Parking is often a problem during the Independence Day holiday, and it is not uncommon for the Mickey and Friends parking structure to reach capacity early in the day. We suggest you try the Toy Story lot south of Katella Avenue on Harbor Boulevard, which offers bus service to the Resort and is generally easier to get into, especially for people arriving from south of the Resort.

In past years, the Downtown Disney parking lot suspended the standard three-hour grace period and imposed a flat $15 upfront fee for vehicles entering after 6:00 p.m., in an effort to discourage those who would park in Downtown Disney to watch the Disneyland fireworks for free from the esplanade between Disneyland and DCA. We have not yet heard if the Resort plans to do this again this year, but we expect they will. If you have to pay the fee, you should be able to get a refund with a table-service restaurant or AMC movie theater validation.
Annual Downtown Disney fundraiser nets $10,000 for CHOC
The Paint the Way to Miracles & Magic event was held in Downtown Disney Anaheim this weekend, and raised $10,000 for Children's Hospital Orange County. The third annual event was hosted by the Disneyland Resort, with supplies donated by Color Me Mine pottery, and staffed by volunteers from local Chic-fil-A restaurants.

Participants helped create one of two tile murals by painting and personalizing a four-inch by four-inch tile. The finished tiles will be baked and glazed, then assembled into a mural that will be installed in Downtown Disney near the ESPN Zone restaurant. The new murals will be installed sometime in October, and the murals created during the 2011 event will be sent back to CHOC, where they will be displayed in the hospital's new tower currently under construction in Orange.

Paint the Way to Miracles & Magic is one of several CHOC fundraisers held at the Disneyland Resort. The next event is the Fifth Annual Taste of Downtown Disney, scheduled for Thursday, August 16. This annual fundraiser includes appetizers and wine tasting at several participating Downtown Disney restaurants. Registration is not yet open; keep watching for additional details.

Disneyana Fan Club to honor John Musker and Ron Clements at Disneyland dinner
The Disneyana Fan Club is hosting a Disneyland dinner event honoring Disney Animators/Producers/Directors John Musker and Ron Clements on Tuesday, July 17 (Disneyland's anniversary). This is a rare opportunity to see John Musker and Ron Clements in person, and to eat dinner at Aladdin's Oasis, which closed as a dining venue in 1996.
Tickets are $115 per person, with an optional Premium Viewing Dessert package for the 10:30 p.m. performance of Fantasmic available for an additional $75 per person. Disneyland theme park admission, which is required to attend the event, is not included. July 17 is a blockout day for SoCal and SoCal Select annual passholders.
Space is limited, and you must RSVP by June 25 if you wish to add the Fantasmic dessert option to your meal. After that, dinner reservations will be accepted only until the event fills. Register using the form available on the club's website, or email anita@disneyanafanclub.org for more information.
Though the reservation form states that one member of your household must be a member of (or join) the Disneyana Fan Club, the DFC has invited MousePlanet readers to attend the event without joining the club. Just be sure to write “I read about it on MousePlanet” somewhere on your reservation form.

Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31
June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night. - D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

2012 Southern California CityPass ($279/$239) – This pass includes a 3–Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early–entry day), a one–day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2012. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Website or on–site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. 2012 Southern California CityPass PLUS ($311/$263) – This pass includes a 3–Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early–entry day), a one–day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood, PLUS one–day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2012. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPass Website. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – Cardholders have access to a private Character Meet 'N' Greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
