Crowning Achievements at the Disney Gallery

A new exhibit at the Disney Gallery celebrates the famous castles of Disney theme parks and feature films. The centerpiece of “Crowning Achievements – Creating Castles for Magical Kingdoms” is a scale model of Sleeping Beauty Castle from Disneyland Paris, considered by many to be the most beautiful of the Disney theme park castles (after all, Disney's castle needed to be more spectacular than the real castles that are its European neighbors').

Art displayed on the walls surrounding the model are grouped into three collections: “Blue Sky” concept art, including a striking Jules Verne-inspired castle concept for Disneyland Paris; “The Long View,” showing how the castles fit into the overall landscape of the park, and; “What's Inside,” exploring the interior design of the theme park icons.

Mickey's Halloween Party tickets now on sale to passholders
Annual Passholders can now purchase tickets to Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland, though Disney has still not released details of the Happiest Haunts tour or the Ultimate Experience package. The separate ticketed costume parties at Disneyland are scheduled for September 28; October 2, 5, 9, 12, 15, 19, 23, 26, 29 and 31. Ticket prices range from $46 to $69 depending on the date and when the tickets are purchased, with the peak nights increasing $5 over the 2011 event price.

If you're only interested attending the party, go ahead and grab your tickets now. But if you were planning to also book the Happiest Haunts tour for the same night, you'll have to wait until the Ultimate Experience package goes on sale.

A recap of food-related news from the Disneyland Resort:
…During the refurbishment of the Cove Bar this spring, the bar's entrance was relocated so patrons enter through a gate at the side of the seating area instead of though Ariel's Grotto restaurant. The bar also added exterior signage to explain that a $10 per-person cover charge is added to your bill if you stay in the bar to watch World of Color.

The Cove Bar offers a decent vantage spot from which to catch the World of Color, and has the benefit of not requiring a reservation or a Fastpass. The best views are from the tables along the water's edge, though portions of the bar also have a good view. Cast members suggest you arrive at least an hour before the show to get a spot, and warn that tables are never guaranteed.

…Dulce Adventura, the candy counter that opened last summer in the Pacific Wharf area, is now closed. The location sold candy apples, cookies, and chocolate-dipped items during the Buena Vista Street construction, taking the place of the closed candy section of the former Greetings from California store. With Trolley Treats now open on Buena Vista Street, Dulce Adventura was no longer needed. No word on any possible future uses for the space, which opened in 2001 as the fortune cookie bakery adjacent to the original Lucky Fortune Cookery restaurant.

…The popular souvenir sipper cones that sold out during the Cars Land opening weekend were briefly back in stock again over the Independence Day holiday, but sold out once more. However, the Lightning McQueen souvenir container (sold as a popcorn bucket at the Cozy Cone Motel) seems to be in good supply, and is now the centerpiece of a kids meal at Flo's V-8 Cafe. The meal comes with your choice of macaroni and cheese ($11.99) or turkey or roast beef sandwich ($12.99), with fresh fruit, a small drink and the plastic racecar.

…Flo's also offers “Flo's Milkshake” in a souvenir “glass” (plastic, with the restaurant's logo) for $9.59. A “Cars Land” version of the glass is sold at the Cozy Cones, filled with your choice of Root Beer Float (from Cone 2) or Red's Apple Freeze (from Cone 4), also $9.59 each. Cars Land cast members told us there was a third version of the glass available at Clarabelle's Hand-Scooped Ice Cream on Buena Vista Street, but cast members there said they haven't heard of anything.

…The second edition of The Buena Vista Bugle was released last week at Disney California Adventure. The lead story in the free souvenir newspaper is all about the Glow with the Show ears recently released at DCA. You can get your copy from the rack outside the Chamber of Commerce (guest relations) building inside the park.
…The second annual Tinker Bell Half Marathon , the women-focused 13.1-mile event scheduled at Disneyland for Sunday, January 20, 2013, is now 88 percent full. Registration fees increase on July 18, but the event will very likely sell out before then.

…A Braille map of Disney California Adventure has been installed just inside the park's main entrance. Braille maps of Disneyland were installed last fall, but managers wanted to wait until all the refurbishment concluded before installing a map in DCA. The map features Braille markings and large print text, and highlight companion restrooms and service animal relief areas.

…A new performer playing a hammered dulcimer was spotted across from Grizzly River Run this weekend. The performer says he should be around Sundays and Mondays, but may fill in other days as needed.
…The conversion of Carnation Plaza Gardens into the new Fantasy Faire continues inside Disneyland, with more work visible over the construction walls. It appears that the earthen berm on the west edge of the gardens has been removed, and the facade has been removed from several surrounding buildings. The dance floor canopy has been removed, leaving the metal frame. The stage backdrop is still in place, but covered with construction markings.

…We are asked about this every year, so those planning a trip to Disneyland this October should know that the official Utah Education Association (UEA) convention is October 18 and 19, 2012. This convention creates a four-day weekend for students at participating schools, earning the weekend the nickname “Utah Escapes to Anaheim” due to the number of families who take advantage of the fall break to visit Disneyland. Not all Utah schools send teachers to that convention, and some seem to schedule an alternate planning day the week before or after—but expect October 18 through 22 to be the dates the Disneyland Resort sees the greatest impact.
…Disney Legend Dave Smith, Chief Archivist Emeritus from the Walt Disney Archives, is scheduled to be at Disneyland next Saturday, July 14, 2012 to sign copies of his new book Disney Trivia from the Vault. The event is at the Disneyana Shop inside Disneyland from from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Get more information on the event website.
…Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on the animated TV series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, will be at Disneyland Saturday, July 21 to sign new releases in the “Her Universe” clothing collection. Get more information on the event website.
…Artist Larry Dotson is featured in an Artist Showcase at the Disney Gallery on July 17 and 18. Dotson will be on hand from noon to midnight each day to meet collectors and sign purchases. Get more information on the event website.

- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. The annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 15, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. - Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 18 & 19 (link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 18–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31
June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night. - D23 Expo – August 9 to 11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. All Safari Club points and benefits expire on March 31, so if you have any gift certificates left to redeem, you have just a week to do so. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
