Disneyland commemorates 57th anniversary
Disneyland marked the its 57th anniversary on Tuesday with a “celebratory moment” in front of the Main Street train station.

Tuesday was also the 12th anniversary of MousePlanet.com, and it is my annual privilege to thank our writers, editors, photographers, technical crew, moderators, community leaders and you, our readers, for another wonderful year. This has been a very busy year in the Disney community, with a new Disney Cruise ship, new Disney resort in Hawaii, new Adventures by Disney destinations, dozens of new Disney books and movies, and the end of the Disneyland Resort expansion project and debut of Cars Land and Buena Vista Street.
Everyone here at MousePlanet has worked to keep you up to date with the latest developments in all of these projects, and we're looking forward to the new Fantasyland in Walt Disney World this fall, and whatever else Disney has in store for us in the coming year. Disneyland honors U.S.A. volleyball teams

Days before the athletes and coaches flew to London to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, Disneyland hosted members of the U.S. Men and Women’s National Volleyball Teams for a special send-off cavalcade down Main Street U.S.A.

Hundreds of fans gathered along the parade route to cheer on the players, who were accompanied down the parade route by Disney characters and the Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. Team coaches, including beach volleyball legend and gold medallist Karch Kiraly, traveled the route in the Disneyland fire engine.

The city of Anaheim is the official host city of the teams, and the U.S. players trained at the American Sport Center a few miles from the Disneyland Resort. According to the NBC broadcast schedule, the volleyball competitions begins this Saturday, July 28, when the U.S. women meet Korea. The men face Serbia on July 29. U.S.A. Volleyball reports the beach competition also begins on July 28 for the women and July 29 for the men.
Meet Otto, Disney's new phone-a-friend
Disney has introduced several new guest services to help you plan a day at the Disneyland Resort, including a new email service for making dining reservations, a Twitter account dedicated to Disney California Adventure news, the Mobile Magic app, and even the ability to purchase tickets directly from your Web-enabled phone. But if you only use your cell phone just to make phone calls, all these mobile services have been out of reach. Last week, Disney unveiled Ask Otto, a voice-response system that can provide some of the same information with just a phone call.
To use Ask Otto, just call (714) 520-7090 and ask your question. Otto handles requests about wait times, Fastpass return times, and entertainment schedules with ease, and may provide a tip about the attraction you've asked about. Inquire about World of Color show times, and Otto replies with the day's schedule, and also suggests that you arrive 30 minutes before show time to get a better view. While he “thinks,” Otto hums or whistles Disney songs like “There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” or “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.”
Some questions are beyond Otto's grasp, so he'll pass you along to a live operator to help. For example, if you ask Otto to find you a vegetarian meal at Disneyland, he'll transfer you to the Disney Dining department.
If you don't have a smart phone and want to know how long the wait is at Tower of Terror without changing theme parks or walking to the info board, Otto is a great tool. Even dedicated smart phone users should add Otto to your contacts list—it beats having separate listings for Disney Dining, Guest Services, the Walt Disney Travel Company, and the Disneyland Hotel operator.
Disneyland ordered to study Segway use
Quoting Walt Disney in its ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has told Disney that it may be required to allow visitors to use Segway devices in place of motorized wheelchairs or scooters unless the company can demonstrate that the devices pose an actual danger to theme park guests.
The ruling comes in the case of Tina Baughman, a mother who requested and was denied permission to use her Segway Personal Transportation Device during a trip to Disneyland. A district court originally ruled in Disney's favor, saying the company was not required to allow visitors like Baughman to use a Segway inside the theme parks because the company permitted other mobility devices, like motorized wheelchairs and scooters.
In overturning the lower court's decision, the 9th Circuit held that Disney's policy allowing one particular accommodation did not relieve the company of offering a better accommodation if reasonable. “The [Americans with Disabilities Act] guarantees the disabled more than mere access to public facilities; it guarantees them 'full and equal enjoyment' ” the court wrote, citing a well-known case establishing that movie theaters must offer both accessible seating for wheelchair users as well as companion seating so wheelchair users could watch the movie with their family and friends.
The court continued, “…technological advances didn’t end with the powered wheelchair. As new devices become available, public accommodations must consider using or adapting them to help disabled guests have an experience more akin to that of non-disabled guests.” However, the court stopped short of ordering Disney to allow Segways, saying the company “might be able to exclude them if it can prove that Segways can’t be operated safely in its parks.”
The burden now falls on Disney to demonstrate that Segway use by theme park visitors would constitute a danger to other guests, cautioning that any ban or restriction on the use of the device (such as requiring the operator to restrict the Segway to the slowest speed setting), “must be based on actual risks and not on mere speculation, stereotypes, or generalizations about individuals with disabilities.”
Disney extends Extra Magic Hours again
Last week we reported that the Extra Magic Hours program had been extended to seven days a week at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure through September 13 for visitors who are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort Hotels. Later that day, Disney announced the offering would be extended again, now through September 29, 2012.
There has been no word on whether Disney plans to extend the Annual Passholder Early Admission program beyond September 13, the original end date of the promotion.
This and That…
…The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition is coming to the Disneyland Resort for Halloween Time from September 14 to November 5. The exhibit features sketches, sets and puppets from the upcoming stop-motion film by Tim Burton. Following a June debut in Barcelona, the exhibition was showcased earlier this month at Comic-Con in San Diego, and is making stops in Mexico, Madrid, Toronto, London, Paris and Tokyo to promote the film's October 5 release. Disney has not yet announced exactly where it will be displayed; only that it will be in Disney California Adventure. You can get a preview of the exhibit in this Disney video.
…Southwest Airlines Vacations is offering a four-day trip to the Disneyland Resort in a new Cars Land contest. The winner receives airfare, hotel, park hopper tickets, rental car, $500 Disney Gift Card, and a Cars Land gift pack. To enter and to obtain complete rules, visit the contest website.
…The Los Angeles Times reported last week that the Transportation Security Administration is easing restrictions for carry-on luggage to allow very small snow globes aboard planes. The article quotes the TSA as saying the new guidelines, set to be enacted later this summer, allows passengers to pack snow globes with less than three ounces of liquid (about the size of a golf ball) into their 3-1-1 bag with other liquids and gels like toothpaste and shampoo. Larger snow globes will still be prohibited. Disney theme parks have all but stopped offering snow globes for sale in the wake of the TSA ban, and most shops display the few remaining styles with a warning that the souvenirs cannot be taken onboard in carry-on bags.
…If you were wondering what Disney did with the footage filmed during the Annual Passholder performances of World of Color earlier this month, check any store that sells Glow with the Show ears. Displays of the light-up ears have recently been enhanced with a digital photo frame playing video from the performances, to give prospective buyers an idea of how the hats interact with the show.

Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 3, with November 4 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.

Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
