Fall schedule and refurbishment preview

With just six weeks left of the normal “summer” season, we're getting a look a what the fall schedule may look like. Last week, Disney posted the operating hours through September 6, and so far the schedule has Disneyland and Disney California Adventure opening at the same time each day, with DCA closing an hour or two earlier than Disneyland on weekends. This is a change from the same period in 2011, when DCA opened at 10 a.m. every morning regardless of Disneyland's hours, and a sign that park managers intend to continue the extended DCA operating hours that began with the park's June rededication and the opening of Cars Land.

There is one schedule change to note. On Thursday, September 6, Disneyland hosts a cast member recognition event that includes a “red carpet arrival,” dinner, “multiple themed celebration zones,” dancing “under the stars,” and special entertainment. The event begins at 7:30 p.m., and sources tell us Disneyland closes as early as 5 p.m. that evening, with Disney California Adventure remaining open until 8 p.m. The schedule posted on Disneyland.com does not reflect this early closing, and Disney has yet to announce the event to the public, though a “save the date” notice was sent to cast members last week.

We're also waiting for the full fall refurbishment schedule, but there are a few closures already announced. The Jungle Cruise reopens Friday, August 3 following an unscheduled one-week refurbishment. According to the Orange County Register, Disneyland is installing new bumpers around the boats to close the gap between the boat and dock. The HalloweenTime refurbishments begin when the Haunted Mansion closes August 27 to install the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay, followed by Space Mountain and Big Thunder Ranch petting farm on September 10. All three should reopen by September 14 for the start of HalloweenTime.

Storybook Land and Casey Jr. both close on September 4 for refurbishment through November 14th. In Disney California Adventure, Muppet Vision 3D also closes on September 10; the end dates for this refurbishment has not yet been published.

Protests in Anaheim bring demonstrators to Disneyland

Demonstrators angry about two recent fatal shootings by the Anaheim Police Department staged daily protests last week outside Anaheim City Hall and the Anaheim police station, both less than two miles from the Harbor Boulevard pedestrian entrance to the Disneyland Resort. On Tuesday, an estimated 500 to 1000 people demonstrated outside City Hall before marching onto surrounding streets in a protest that lasted hours, and which resulted in damage and looting at some local businesses. Police eventually used nonlethal force to disperse the crowd after they failed to comply with orders to leave, and arrested more than 20 people on charges ranging from vandalism to assault with a deadly weapon. The Orange County Register reports that five people were injured, including two Register reporters who were covering the protests.

While helicopters circled overhead, it was business as usual at Disneyland; the Register published a photo showing an Orange County sheriff in riot gear keeping watch during the protest while Disneyland's fireworks explode in the background. However, the Los Angeles-based organization Mexica Movement decided to bring the protest to Disneyland's doorstep this past weekend, saying, “Anaheim is controlled by Disneyland so we will hold Disneyland accountable.” The group organized protests Saturday and Sunday outside the Harbor Boulevard pedestrian entrance to the Resort, asking demonstrators to bring their own signs and remain peaceful.

The Register estimates 50 people turned out for Saturday's demonstration, and the Anaheim police department responded by stationing mounted officers and extra patrol cars along Harbor Boulevard. On Sunday, the crowd outside Disneyland dwindled to about a dozen people, though larger groups turned out for two separate demonstrations in downtown Anaheim.

According to the Orange County Register, about 300 demonstrators gathered in front of the Anaheim Police Department on Sunday and began marching towards the Disneyland Resort before being stopped by a line of police in riot gear stationed at the intersection of Ball and Harbor, just north of Disneyland. The response forced the temporary closure of the intersection and surrounding surface streets, and police directed the crowd back towards downtown Anaheim. Disney-owned KABC-TV reports that nine people were arrested in Sunday's demonstration.

The Disneyland Resort has declined to comment on the demonstrations.

Disneyland to end Toontown Morning Madness in 2013

Mary Kraemer, travel agent with MousePlanet sponsor Mouse Ear Vacations, tells us that Disneyland's Toontown Morning Madness offering will end on December 31, 2012. Toontown Morning Madness lets guests who have booked vacation packages through the Walt Disney Travel Company enter Toontown one hour before the land opens to other Disneyland guests, giving them an opportunity to enjoy plenty of character meet-and-greet opportunities and the chance to tour the character houses without long lines. Starting in 2013, WDTC packages will instead include a “Disney Attraction Photo Memory,” one 5″-by-7″ ride photo and a digital photo download from one of the following rides: Splash Mountain or Space Mountain at Disneyland Park ; The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or California Screamin' at Disney California Adventure Park. Radiator Springs Racers is not included in this offer.

An expansion for Aulani

Last week's announcements about the upcoming expansion of Disney's Aulani Resort in Hawaii is great news for people planning trips to the newest Disney Vacation Club property, but those planning trips during the construction should be aware of the potential impact to their vacation. While the Disney Parks Blog announcement focuses entirely on the new water features, deck space and food options to be added to the resort (which opened last year on the island of Oahu), and email sent out to DVC owners provides more details about the temporary and permanent closures this expansion will entail.

During expansion of the Waikolohe Valley—the resort's central water park complex—the Waikolohe Pool, lazy river, water slides, whirlpool spas, Rainbow Reef (private snorkeling lagoon), and Menehune Bridge (interactive water play area) will all remain open. Closing “for an extended period” for renovation are the Wailana pool (originally intended as an adults-only pool but converted to a family pool due to demand) and the adjacent bar. The Makai Preserve, which offered stingray encounters at an additional fee, is closing permanently.

Disney is moving the Starlit Hui to a larger venue, so the popular nightly show will not be presented for about one month. Disney did not provide specific dates, but a Walt Disney Travel Company cast member said the move will happen from the end of September until late October.

Construction of a new shade structure outside the Makahiki restaurant will render the patio unusable during construction, leaving only the interior dining room available for meal service. Disney is expanding the character breakfast to six days a week to accommodate more guests.

The Aulani website has posted a FAQ about the planned construction, including this exchange:

Q. Will the work be noisy?

A. You may hear and/or see the work taking place during your visit. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please know that we are making every effort to ensure your comfort and enjoyment while Aulani undergoes expansion.

However, if you don't mind dealing with a little construction noise and partial facility closures, Disney is offering a “five nights for the price of three” special for travel September 10 through December 21, 2012, with rates starting at under $1200, double occupancy.

  • for more information about the walk and our team.

Winter

  • Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 3 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 3, with November 4 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.

  • Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31
June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
  • D23 Expo – August 9 to 11. Tickets for the three-day convention go on sale August 9, 2012.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Disneyland prices as of May 20, 2012.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt’s Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. See the Disney Visa website for terms and conditions.

Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point–based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre–purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.

ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.

Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
