New record set at Disneyland Half Marathon
Jimmy Grabow from Running Springs, California, set a new course record at the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon on Sunday. Grabow finished the 13.1-mile course in 1:05:29, nearly two minutes faster than the previous course record of 1:07:24 set by Paul Ngeny in 2011.

Cindy Lynch from Cardiff, California, took first place in the women's division with a time of 1:24:45, beating Kellie Nickerson, winner of the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon earlier this year, by nearly two minutes. Race results are available on the RunDisney website, so you can check your official time.

Nearly 15,000 runners completed Sunday's race, including actor Sean Astin, three-time Olympian Suzy Favor-Hamilton, authors Dimity McDowell and Sarah Bowen Shea (Run Like a Mother), and six MousePlanet staff members. Congratulations to all of the runners and walkers who completed the race, and a special thanks to the Team MousePlanet cheering section who were at mile 6.5 with cold water and encouragement.

$45 Disneyland tickets? It's true!
With all of the recent news reports about Disneyland ticket scams, we're thrilled to help spread the word about a completely legitimate, Disney-approved way to purchase tickets to Disneyland or Disney California Adventure at a price not seen since 2002—and help raise funds for a local charity at the same time.
Participants in the 2012 CHOC Walk benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County can purchase Disneyland Resort 1-day 1-park tickets for $45 each, or 1-Day Park Hopper tickets for just $65. You can only purchase these tickets on the day of the CHOC Walk itself (Sunday, October 14 at the Disneyland Resort), and are valid from that day through Friday, November 9, 2012. There are no block-out dates on these tickets.
Each participant may only purchase up to five tickets, and must be purchased in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth the day of the CHOC Walk. CHOC Walk wristband is required. To qualify, all you need to do is register for the CHOC Walk and raise at least $50.

PCH Grill invites Annual Passholders to preview new menu
Disneyland announced a series of special prix-fix dinners for Annual Passholders to try out the new Fall menu at PCH Grill at the Paradise Pier Hotel, and the first dinner was this Sunday, September 2. The promotion runs for three weeks, with new menu items previewed each week. The cost is $34.99 per person, and includes choice of appetizer, entree and dessert, plus a non-alcoholic beverage. The package also includes Fastpass tickets for the World of Color for the entire party.

Passholder previews for “The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition”
Tickets are on sale now for an Annual Passholder preview of “The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition” at Disney California Adventure on Thursday, September 13. The $295 package includes a champagne reception inside the new exhibit, a “special 4D extended sneak peek of the film,” dinner in front of the Tower of Terror attraction, and a mysterious two-hour “special experience” that Disney says “Frankenweenie fans will surely love.” Tickets are available through Sunday, September 9 at Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or by calling (714) 781-7277.
Starting Wednesday, passholders can register for a free preview of the exhibit on Thursday, September 13 from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. This free event includes:
- A preview of the exhibit during a designated window
- An extended, 8-minute 4D sneak peek of Frankenweenie
- An opportunity to purchase Frankenweenie merchandise and food items
- “Access to select attractions, shops and restaurants in Hollywood Land.”
This event is open to passholders only, and online registration begins Wednesday, September 5. Disney has not said exactly what time registration opens on Wednesday registration, but has confirmed that passholders can register for themselves as well as other passholder guests at the same time. Keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more information, and be prepared to provide the name, valid Annual Passport number, and birth date of each AP in your group as soon as registration opens.
This and That…
…Disneyland closes at 5 p.m. this Thursday, September 6, for a private cast member recognition event. Disney California Adventure remains open until 8 p.m.
…When Disney California Adventure debuted the new Games of the Boardwalk in 2009, the prizes were updated to more-or-less match the general theme of the game—plush fish for Goofy About Fishing, plush horses and farm critters at Bullseye Stallion Stampede, and plush circus animals at Dumbo Bucket Brigade. At some point, some of the prizes were upgraded to more closely match each game, with Dumbo Bucket Brigade offering Timothy Mouse or Dumbo plush to winners, and Casey at the Bat replacing the odd neon-colored monkeys with giant stuffed Casey figures and an oversized dachshund in a hot dog bun.

Now the Bullseye Stallion Stampede has introduced a new set of prizes that has some players trying to collect the whole set. The eight plush horses each match the coloring, coat pattern, and number of the eight stallions in the game, and are considered the “small” prize. The small prize is only awarded when there are two to four players—the prize increases to a stuffed plush Woody doll with five players, or a giant stuffed Bullseye with seven players—but most cast members will let winners select a small prize if they prefer, regardless of how many players there were. At $2.50 per game, you need to be really skilled or be prepared to drop some cash to win the whole set, but we have to give credit to whomever came up with this adorably themed prize.
…Disneyland hosted a second Annual Passholder movie night last Thursday, giving passholders the chance to vote to see either Sleeping Beauty or Lady and the Tramp (Sleeping Beauty won). Once again, Disney did absolutely no advance marketing of this event, instead relying on passholders who were in the park that day and saw the sign announcing the event to spread the word via social media. …As we reported last month, Disney has added Glow with the Show technology to Disneyland's Fantasmic nighttime spectacular. The first official performance of the enhanced show took place last Tuesday night during a special Annual Passholder event, and the technology was introduced to the general public last Friday. The Disney Parks Blog has posted a video from the AP preview night, so you can get a taste of how the light-up ears interact with the show.

…It appears Disney is tinkering with the Extra Magic Hour schedule for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure again, and the change is likely to cause some confusion for vacation planners hoping to take advantage of the program. The Early Admission page on Disneyland.com seems to give conflicting information about exactly when Extra Magic Hour is offered at each park. At the top of the page, under the heading “Extra Magic Hour for Disneyland Resort Hotel Guests,” it reads:
“Starting September 30, registered Resort hotel Guests will have Extra Magic Hour access to one park according to the early admission schedule. To see the early admission hours at each park, please check the Park Hours and Schedule.”
Yet further down the page, also under a heading “Extra Magic Hour for Disneyland Resort Hotel Guests,” it reads:
“After September 29, Extra Magic Hour will be available every day, during a hotel stay, according to this schedule: Disneyland Park on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and Disney California Adventure Park on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.”
These two statements don't seem to contradict one another until you look at the park hours for September 30, the day the new schedule begins. September 30 is a Sunday, so Extra Magic Hour should be offered at Disneyland per the schedule detailed in the second statement. However, according to Disneyland.com, Extra Magic Hour is offered at Disney California Adventure that day. The same is true for the following two Sundays, October 7 and 14.
The resort previously announced that after September 29, Extra Magic Hour would be offered at Disneyland on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; and at Disney California Adventure on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Early Admission page on Disneyland.com has now been changed to read “Starting September 30, registered Resort hotel Guests will have Extra Magic Hour access to one park according to the early admission schedule,” and refers readers to the daily park calendar.
If the Resort has decided to move Extra Magic Hours to DCA on Sundays, that change will likely come as welcome news to Resort Hotel guests who have previously complained that they did not have EMH access to DCA on either weekend day. However, Disney really should clarify the schedule so guests know what to expect during their Halloween Time visits. Thanks to MousePad member Corona for pointing out the change.
…MouseInfo.com is reporting that Disney has extended the “limited engagement” of the West Coast Voices of Liberty a cappella group. According to its report, the engagement has been extended through the holiday season. Voices of Liberty debuted at Disneyland in June, and were originally scheduled to perform only through the summer season.

- Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland – September 28; October 2, 5, 9, 12, 15, 19, 23, 26, 29, and 31. Advance-purchase tickets are on sale to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders and to the general public via Disneyland.com or by calling (714) 781-4000. Advance-purchase tickets now are on sale to Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders by calling (714) 781-4636.

- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. The annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 15, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. - Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 18 & 19 (link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 18–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 3 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 3, with November 4 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12, 2012 to January 6, 2013
- Candlelight Processional – Nightly, December 1–20. Performances times, narrator(s) and details of reserved viewing areas and dining packages have not yet been announced.
2013
- 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – January 18–20.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

2012 Southern California CityPass ($279/$239) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2012. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
