Disneyland cracks down on Party crashers
I received an e-mail from a regular reader Sharon asking about my experience at the first Mickey's Halloween Party of the 2012, held Friday night at Disneyland. She knew that I had written in 2010 and 2011 about how easy it could be for someone without a ticket to “crash” the extra-cost, after-hours Halloween parties, and wanted to know if I'd noticed an improvement this year.
As it happens, last-minute preparations for MouseAdventure kept me away from Friday's party, but I heard from several readers who did attend. Based on their reports, it sounds like Disney has dramatically increased and improved security at the event to prevent party crashers, a change I wholeheartedly welcome. I've given Disney managers some grief over their mishandling of this event in past years, and I'm happy to give them kudos for helping to ensure that Halloween party guests get the exclusive access they paid for.

Reader Doug Williams said the first change he noticed is that wristbands for this event are now big reflective bands printed with a number (a #1 for this first event). “I assume the number is to assist cast members in seeing what night the band was for,” he said, adding “I would think this would be to cut down on annual passholders that try double-dipping for the party.” I saw several people still wearing their wristbands the next day, and have to agree that they are definitely easier to spot, which means someone hanging out without one is more likely to be noticed.

Once the event started at 7:00 p.m., Doug said, “Cast members were in full force at just about every crossing asking to see [wrist]bands. This was obviously increased enforcement. It wasn't to the point that it was annoying, but it was constant.” Readers Ken and Teresa also attended Friday's party, and said wristband enforcement kept up well beyond 10 p.m., with cast members in the guise of “costume checkers” asking everyone to show off the “most important part of their costume” at checkpoints throughout the park.
Doug said a station was set up inside Frontierland to issue wristbands to event ticket-holders who had entered the park earlier in the day; attendees could have their event tickets scanned and receive the wristband needed to stay for the event. While he felt the station could have had better signage and been better organized, the added location likely helped cut down on the problem I noted last year, when I was able to collect a wristband without showing any proof I had even purchased a ticket to the event.

Doug mentioned that the treat stations had their normal candy selections, but found it odd that Ghirardelli is no longer a candy sponsor, considering the company just opened a location at Disney California Adventure. Teresa said the “healthy” treat options again included dried cranberries and freeze-dried apple slices, but noted that the fresh carrot and apple packs were harder to find.
The benefits of the enhanced wristband enforcement were noticeable to Doug when it came time to see characters. “What was a 30-plus-minute line to see Jack Sparrow or Captain Hook last year was barely 15 minutes this year.” He also enjoyed the new Villains meet-and-greet in Town Square. “New villains would come out on a black carriage pulled by a white horse.” [We saw] Jafar, Maleficent, Cruella, Dr. Facilier, Evil Queen, to name a few. Again, lines were very reasonable to get to the characters.”
Doug also noted that the crowds on Main Street during the fireworks were notably lighter. “As we stood on Main Street though it was obvious that the 'sold out' crowd was not nearly as large in past years, once again I think a credit to wristband enforcement.” Ken and Teresa said the lines at the rides were also noticeably shorter, with cast members at every attraction checking for wristbands.
If you're coming to the Halloween party this year. Doug suggests parking in the Toy Story lot instead of the Mickey and Friends parking structure. “Good organization going and coming, making for a smooth ending to the evening.”
Candlelight questions and holiday dining
When Disneyland officials announced the expansion of its Candlelight Processional from the normal two nights to a 20-night schedule, they said “performances from December 3-20 will be open to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders and guests booking special, to-be-announced dining packages for the 2012 holiday season.” With the dining reservation window for that period opening this week, we're anxiously waiting for Disney to announce additional details of these packages, as well as information on when and how the meals can be reserved.
If Disney sticks to its 60-day-advance-reservation schedule, reservations for the Monday, December 3 performance would open this Thursday, October 4. Dine Line cast members were unable to provide any information about the packages, but said to watch for an announcement this week.
Disney is now accepting reservations for the traditional Thanksgiving Day character buffet at the Disneyland Hotel. A Disney Family Thanksgiving Feast is offered from noon to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 22. The price is $71.99 for adults ages 10 and up ($20.99 for children ages 3-9). The meal includes four hours of free parking at the Disneyland Hotel. Discounts for annual passholders (10 to 15 percent, depending on annual pass type) and cast members apply.
We'll have details about additional Thanksgiving and Christmas meal options in an upcoming Update, but we can confirm the dates for the seasonal character meal price increase. Holiday (or “peak”) pricing is in effect November 16, 2012 through January 6, 2013, which will add $2 to $5 to the price at any of the five character meals offered at the Resort.
MouseAdventure: Road Trip
The scorching heat during this weekend's MouseAdventure event helped reinforce player perceptions that we somehow control the weather, with temperatures breaking 100 degrees Sunday afternoon.

Seven hundred players came out for our first event in the re-imagined Disney California Adventure, and the vast majority pushed through the brutal heat to solve 16 quests that took them to every corner of the park. Past Masters team Simba's Pride actually earned the highest score at this event, with an impressive 1350 out of a possible 1400 points.

…The 2012 CHOC Walk in the Park is just a month away, and members of Team MousePlanet have raised over $3000 for Childrens Hospital Orange County. …RunDisney is expected to open volunteer registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon this week. Race volunteers help with such activities as runner sign-ins, water station staffing along the race course, and distribution of medals at the finish line, helping out with one of a hundred projects needed to make sure the race weekend runs smoothly. Volunteers can receive free or discounted theme park tickets for their participation, and many local youth organizations participate to help meet school requirements for community volunteerism. If you're interested in volunteering with RunDisney, keep an eye on the official website this week.

…Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen is again hosting a Haunted Gingerbread House workshop. Each class begins with the participants decorating their own chef hat, then a Ralph Brennan’s chef demonstrates how to assemble the gingerbread houses. Once the construction is done, participants move onto the decorating phase. Both construction and decorating materials are provided, and the whole class lasts about 2 hours, and participants take their creations home.
The sessions are October 20, 27 or 28 from noon to 2:00 p.m. Each gingerbread kit costs $48.00 plus tax and comes with gingerbread house and candy, chef’s hat, two reserved seats and soft drinks for the participants. Additional guests are $12.00. You can make your advanced reservations and payment by calling Bruno Duarte at (714) 776-5200 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Halloween and Christmas events sell out very quickly every year, so reserve your tickets soon.

Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet

- Plaza Gardens – closed until Spring 2013 for the construction of the new Fantasy Faire.
- Princess Fantasy Faire/Fantasyland Theater – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. The Princess meet-and-greet is relocated to the terrace near “it's a small world” until the new Fantasy Faire opens.
- Troubadour Treats – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. An internal document lists May 23 as the reopening date, but this may just be a placeholder.
- Disneyland Railroad – reduced capacity (3 of 4 trains available) through November 6.
- Storybook Land – closed until November 16 for refurbishment.
- Casey Jr. – closed until November 16 for refurbishment.
- Indiana Jones Adventure – closed until December 8 for refurbishment.

- Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort – Through October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland – October 2, 5, 9, 12, 15, 19, 23, 26, 29, and 31. Advance-purchase tickets are on sale via Disneyland.com or by calling (714) 781-4000. Advance-purchase tickets also available to Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders by calling (714) 781-4636.
- 14th annual Gays Days at the Disneyland Resort (unofficial event) – October 5–7. Event attendance will be higher at Disneyland on Saturday and at Disney California Adventure on Sunday (link).
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday October 14. The annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 15, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. Team MousePlanet is back for our fifth year, and we welcome new members—visit the CHOC website to join us! - Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 18 & 19 (link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 18–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 3 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 3, with November 4 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12, 2012 to January 6, 2013
- Candlelight Processional – Nightly, December 1–20. Performances times, narrator(s) and details of reserved viewing areas and dining packages have not yet been announced.
2013
- 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – January 18–20.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket–only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
