Disney debuted “ElecTRONica” Friday night, and it would not be at all surprising to learn that the Resort’s entertainment executives are trying to figure out some way to extend the weekends-only dance party to a nightly event, given the rave reviews received during the opening weekend. ElecTRONica features three main elements:
- A dance party in the Sunshine Plaza and the streets of the Hollywood Pictures Backlot
- A re-creation of Flynn’s Arcade inside the former Hollywood and Dine building
- A presentation of a 3-D trailer for the upcoming TRON: Legacy movie inside the theater usually used for Muppet*Vision 3-D attraction.

With the usual Update writers spending this past weekend in Florida hosting MousePlanet’s second MouseAdventure event in Walt Disney World, we asked readers to submit their photos from ElecTRONica’s opening weekend. I got there about 5:20 after a longggg wait to park, just in time for the middle of the Pixar Play Parade. The banner was running while the parade was going on. Then in the back lot things were pretty calm, but pretty much all setup. Face painting was going on before the rest of it started. Even the drink carts had redone graphics.
I was surprised at how they quickly redid the Muppet Vision 3D theater. Outside, we both entered and exited through the traditional exit, and all the posters were replaced with different Tron Legacy posters. The wall projections inside were turned off, so they were a pale brown. But it was hard to notice with all the blue lighting inside. I’d never seen it so crowded inside.
The trailer is NEARLY the same from Comic-Con. I really enjoyed how they employed the effects in the theater like the lighting, flashing lights, giant fan and a few other things. Really made it intense.
At Flynn’s Arcade, it was pretty crowded. In front, you could demo the new Tron Legacy. Inside you could play the arcade games. SADLY, the token machines are dollar bills only, so those that brought rolls of quarters were out of luck. Pretty good selection of games. A few seemed out of place, like Super Off-Road or R-Type, but fun stuff, nonetheless. I really wish it stick around longer.
Every 30 minutes, the brick wall lights up and sound clips from the trailer player. Kinda cool, but nothing too crazy.
Outside, the music was pumping. WAYYY better, in mine and my wife’s opinion, than GlowFest, in every way imaginable. Even before it started, seeing the Tron-outfitted dancers walking around was sending chills down my spine.Some of their suits lit up, but it’s all reflective tape. They weren’t glowing until I used a flash.
I really dug the projections everywhere. The Monsters Inc. facade and even all down Hollywood Studios Backlot was all animated in the blue graphics. And the spotlight into the sky could be seen from really far away. (It was distracting later in the night, waiting in the queue for Autopia.)
The one curious part, maybe related to the performances at 6:00 and 6:45 that I missed, was in the Sunshine Plaza. It was playing different dance music from the actual dance area near Monsters Inc. It was only Daft Punk. Makes me question the denied Daft Punk presence…
Had a great time. I’ll go back next week to enjoy it more myself.

Hanky Panky Dooms Disney Dressing Rooms

Disney Clothiers on Disneyland’s Main Street has reopened after a six-week remodel that includes installation of new flooring and fixtures. But the most noticeable change is the elimination of the guest fitting rooms. The back area has been walled off, and the dressing rooms have been converted into behind-the-scenes closets/storage nooks.
According to a cast member in Merchandise, the fitting rooms were removed “because of the increase in shoplifting, and other ‘activities’ guests were found doing in those rooms.”
Earlier, Downtown Disney’s World of Disney lost its dressing rooms, also allegedly due to shoplifting. But the park has been cutting back on wardrobe privacy for years.
The old Pendleton’s store in Frontierland, said another cast member, “used to have (fitting rooms), but they are now storage rooms. There was one at the Adventureland Bazaar, which is now an office. South Seas Trader had one, too. I have not been there recently to see if it is still there. I think the Emporium had them, too. I think the only ones left are in Fantasyland at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. But that is a specialty location, and you can’t horse around there… too many cast members.”
The remodel will likely influence the type of merchandise the shop now carries. MousePlanet’s merchandise maven Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix noted, “Clothiers sometimes sells women’s pants and skirts, that’s recently included a yoga pant in a few styles and a plaid Minnie skirt, and it’s hard to try those on without a fitting room, or to guess sizes. Same with some of the men’s clothing, shorts especially.”
Or then again, considering the immodesty of families who allow their kids to cavort half-naked in the parks’ fountains, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of an outbreak of quick changes between the aisles.

Join Team MousePlanet at CHOC Walk
The 20th Annual CHOC Walk in the Park takes place this Sunday, October 17, at the Disneyland Resort. This 5-kilometer fun walk through Disneyland and Disney California Adventure is an annual fundraiser for Children’s Hospital Orange County. Last week, Team MousePlanet welcomed our 76th member to our 2010 CHOCWalk team, and our members have raised a combined $7,800.85 so far this year. We’re hoping to raise $10,000 for this great local organization, and there are several ways you can help:
- Walk with Team MousePlanet – register to walk with us at the October 17 event, and earn prizes as you meet your fundraising goals (click here). Team MousePlanet Walkers who raise at least $50 (the minimum entry fee for the walk) by October 14 receive a MousePlanet baseball cap as a thank you for their participation, and are eligible for additional prizes from Walk sponsors.

Expect a busy weekend at the Resort
If you’re planning to visit Disneyland this weekend, keep in mind that this is expected to be a fairly busy weekend. Starting Thursday you can expect to see a noticeable spike in attendance as Utah students and families take advantage of a four-day weekend created by their school’s participation in the annual Utah Education Association (UEA) convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend the convention, but UEA weekend is said to stand for “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”, and the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
Friday night will undoubtedly been extremely crowded at Disney California Adventure park, as the early closure of Disneyland due to Mickey’s Halloween Party, combined with the crush of annual passholders trying to experience ElecTRONica now that the early reviews are so positive, will likely create crowds not often seen at Anaheim’s second park.
Finally, Sunday is the 20th Annual CHOC Walk in the Park, with an estimated 15,000 walkers participating in the walk before park hours. Disneyland opens at 9am on Sunday due to the walk, and you can expect to see percentage of those participants take advantage of a discount ticket offer available to walkers and stay for a day at the park.
This and That…
…After reporting last week how easy it was for someone without an event wristband to remain inside Disneyland after hours and stay for Mickey’s Halloween Party, it’s only fitting to report this week that Disney has stepped up its enforcement of the wristbands in an effort to weed out those without an event ticket. MousePlanet readers who attended events on Tuesday and Friday night last week said that they were repeatedly asked to show their wristbands when entering the party areas, passing through trick-or-treat stations, or getting in line for attractions. Reader Nikara also said that she saw three-person “sweep” teams walking through the event areas to check wristbands, which should further help to identify those who are trying to crash the extra-cost event.
…Long-time MousePlanet reader Mary Kraemer, a travel agent with MousePlanet sponsor Mouse Ear Vacations, shared last week that Disney Cruise Line has changed the deposit policy for new cruise bookings. Mary says deposits are 20 percent of the per-person voyage fare instead of a set dollar amount.
…Unite HERE Local 11 staged another protest on the opening night of ElecTRONica last week, passing out balloons with anti-Disney messages to visitors approaching the bag check tables. Disney responded as they usually do, and stationed cast members with bouquets of Mickey Mouse balloons near the union protestors to offer to give visitors an official Disney balloon to carry in exchange for the union balloon. Local 11 has been in a dispute with Disney over the contract for some 2,300 hotel workers for nearly three years, and frequently stages protests and demonstrations against the company.
…The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Comic-Con International has signed a five-year agreement to remain in San Diego, ending months of negotiations that could have seen the pop culture convention move to Anaheim, Los Angeles, or Las Vegas (link). The convention had considered moving to a city with more exhibit space and less expensive hotel rooms after their current contract with the San Diego convention center ended in 2012.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

- Lost Bar, Croc’s Bits ‘n’ Bites, Hook’s Pointe and the Wine Cellar – closed. These four locations will be replaced by a new bar and fast casual restaurant during the ongoing Disneyland Hotel courtyard renovation project. During construction, the only remaining bar at the Disneyland Hotel is the Lounge at Steakhouse 55, which has extended its operating hours, and will be closing at 1:30 a.m. nightly.

- West Coast 2-night “Cruise to Nowhere” on the Disney Wonder – January 21–23. - Sixth annual Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 2–4. Registration for the 2011 event is scheduled to open Jan. 3, 2011.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people AND the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.

Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. 2010 Southern California CityPass ($269/$229) – This pass includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPass expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 3, 2011. Purchase CityPass through the Disneyland Web site (link) or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPass Web site (link) though this has a minimum $7.50 shipping charge (no shipping charge from the Disney Web site if purchased more than 10 days in advance). You can also purchase the Southern California City Pass online from Costco at a cost of $239.99/$204.99 (link), which includes free UPS shipping. A 5% surcharge for non-members, and shipping fees to members in Alaska and Hawaii may also apply to your purchase. Booklets may be available for sale in some stores but varies widely. If you want to buy in person it would be best to call ahead and confirm availability. If you do buy at Costco, you will initially purchase a large plastic container or a cardboard placard that you must trade for ticket books prior to leaving Costco! |

Hotel/Travel Packages
Fall discount offers – Disneyland has extended two discount offers for the three Disneyland Resort Hotels, with extra room-only discounts for travelers who book their trips before the end of September.
If you need a room and theme park tickets, Disneyland is offering a discount of up to $300 on a four-day, four-night vacation package, which includes 4-day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper bonus tickets and four nights at a Disneyland Resort hotel. This package also includes admission to one Magic Morning at Disneyland (Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday), admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness at Disneyland (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday), one Walt Disney Travel Company pin and lanyard per person, preferred seating to select shows in Disney’s California Adventure Park (where available; note that Aladdin will be on hiatus for much of the fall), and a Disney Character Call from Mickey, Minnie, or Goofy (offered to guests who book online).The offer is valid for arrivals from October 1 through December 16. Packages can be booked through December 1, and travel must be completed by December 20.

When purchasing a Costco Disneyland travel package, extras that will be included are: Mickey’s Toontown Madness admission (currently available Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays, and Saturdays), a character breakfast collectible pin and lanyard, and a Costco luggage tag per person, plus a $20 Disneyland Resort gift card per package.

Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Travel (link).
Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
