Disneyland launches an in-park Twitter account
This week, the Disneyland Resort expanded its in-park social media campaign to include Disneyland park. The Disneyland Resort launched a live, up-to-the-minute social media campaign during the Disney California Adventure relaunch this past June. The @DCAToday account appeared on both Twitter and Facebook and is used to interact with park guests in real time, answering questions, giving suggestions, and holding in-the-park contests. The @DCAToday campaign has been so well received that the campaign has expanded to Disneyland park. @DisneylandToday officially launched last week, giving visitors to Walt's original park much of the same experiences.
With the popularity of smartphones, park guests have had instant access to information over the Internet for the past several years. During that time, many unofficial Twitter accounts and Facebook pages have been filling this space. In recent years, Disneyland Resort has been playing catch-up in developing its own presence in the smartphone application market and on social media sites, releasing its “Mobile Magic” wait-time app and live social media accounts. The inclusion of accounts owned and operated by Disney has been a huge hit with park visitors over the past six months, and has proven as not only a valuable tool, but a fun and interactive one as well.
Holiday dining at the Disneyland Resort
Guests who visit the Disneyland Resort on Christmas Day can enjoy special dining menus at a large variety of restaurant location. All table service locations in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are serving their own specialized holiday menus. Guests can enjoy items such as leg of lamb, roast turkey, blackened salmon, roasted butternut squash soup, roast ham, and many other traditional holiday food items. Menus and availability vary depending on the location. Note: Disney Dining has informed us that reservations across the Disneyland Resort are filling quickly, however all of the dining locations do accept a limited number of walk-up diners who are willing to wait for an available table.
Guests of the Downtown Disney District can also enjoy special holiday meals.
On Christmas Day, December 25:
- Catal Restaurant – is offering a three-course prix fix menu for $55 per person. First course includes options for roasted chestnut soup or duck sausage with apples and lentils. Main course selections include slow-roasted Angus Prime rib, braised lamb shank or market cod wrapped in Serrano ham. Dessert choices include pear gingerbread tart, chocolate caramel mousse cak,e and eggnog brioche bread pudding.
- Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen – is offering an a la carte menu including turduken, Abita brown sugar-glazed pork tenderloin, and pink peppercorn-crusted sea bass.
- House of Blues Restaurant – is serving a smoked pork chop with pineapple raisin glaze and roasted baby carrots. $22 per person ($14 for children 12 an under).
On New Year's Eve, December 31:
- Catal Restaurant – is serving a multi-course prix fix menu for $75 per person that includes lobster rolls, crispy braised pork tail and scallop carpaccio. Main course selections include lamb sirloin, pasta and bacon wrapped monkfish.
- Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen – is offering a three-course dinner package for $99 per person that includes party favors, unlimited soft drinks, and a midnight champagne toast from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
- House of Blues Restaurant – is serving filet mignon with andouille corn pudding and crab etouffee for $38 per person.

Annual Passholder early entry for 2013
Annual Passholders can take advantage of early entry on most Saturdays and Sundays this winter for a limited time beginning January 5, 2013. Early entry allows for access to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure park one full hour prior to the general public and access to select attractions.
Early entry to Disney California Adventure park will take place on Saturdays, and Disneyland park on Sundays from January 5 – April 14, 2013 with the exception of the following dates:
- Saturday, January 19
- Sunday, January 20
- Sunday, February 3
To take advantage of early entry, Annual Passholders must present their valid passport at the designated turnstile at the park's Main Entrance. Unlike the early entry program this past summer at Disney California Adventure, passholders need not make reservations, and they may participate as many times as they like during the scheduled dates. Parking will be available at the Mickey & Friends parking structure, which will open one hour prior to the start of early entry (two hours before general park opening). Blockout tickets are required for passholders who are blockedout on these days and wish to take advantage of early entry. A blockout ticket is currently $70 and must be purchased at the Main Entrance on the day of use.
D23 Expo Early Bird Discount Ending Soon
Your chance to purchase tickets to the 2013 D23 Expo at the special 2012 “early bird” price will come to a close at the end of this year. The D23 Expo is a biannual event held at the Anaheim Convention Center located across the street from the Disneyland Resort. This convention, dubbed “The Ultimate Disney Fan Event,” features presentations, announcements, and merchandise from all areas of the Walt Disney Company.
Those who wish to purchase tickets to the 2013 D23 Expo at the special early bird price must do so prior to January 1, 2013 from D23.com.
Disney Cruise Line Leaving Southern California
The Disney Cruise Line is pulling out of Southern California after 2013. The Disney Cruise Line began sailing out of the Port of Los Angeles regularly in 2011 after offering special cruses in 2005 for the Happiest Homecoming on Earth, 50th Anniversary of Disneyland, and again in 2008. The exact reason for the pull-out is not immediately clear and was only made known after the company released its 2014 cruise itineraries.
Earlier this year, Disney announced the cancellation of cruises from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera in favor of special Pixar-inspired California Costal Cruises held in the fall of 2012 and again in May 2013.
The Disney Wonder sets sail out of Los Angeles in September 2013 for Galveston, Texas.
This and That…
…The New Orleans Bayou Bash is returning to Disneyland. The event takes place in New Orleans Square and along the Rivers of America on:
- Friday to Monday, January 18–21
- Friday to Sunday, January 25–27
- Friday to Sunday, February 1–3
- Friday to Tuesday, February 8–12
Entertainment for the New Orleans Bayou Bash includes Princess Tiana's Mardi Gras Celebration, the Jambalaya Jazz Band, a Mardi Gras Procession, and a meet-and-greet with Disney characters in their festive Mardi Gras outfits.
…Disneyland has officially announced the lengthy closure of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which we first reported about in October. Disney stated in a blog post that the attraction is receiving a full track replacement, repainting of the Bryce Canyon-inspired mountain range, and new ride vehicles.
…Disney has released iPhone and iPod Touch versions of the Disneyland Explorer app. The application, which was previously only available on the iPad, takes users on a virtual journey through the Disneyland Resort with photography, animations and games. The Disneyland Explorer app is available in the iTunes App Store and is compatible with the iPad, iPad Mini, iPod Touch (4th generation and newer) and the iPhone (iPhone 4 and newer).

Current Refurbishments and Attraction Closures
Note: Not all of these have been officially confirmed by Disney, and are all subject to change at any time. We recommend checking for updates as you plan your visit.
Disneyland
- Haunted Mansion – closed January 7–17, 2013 for removal of Haunted Mansion Holiday.
- Primeval World – closed January 7–23, 2013 for refurbishment, will not effect the operation of the Disneyland Railroad.
- Fantasmic! – dark January 7 to February 14, 2013 for refurbishment
- Mark Twain Riverboat – closed January 7 to March 28 for refurbishment
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed January 7 to October 30, 2013 for a major refurbishment.
- Princess Fantasy Faire/Fantasyland Theater – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. The Princess meet-and-greet is relocated to the terrace near “it's a small world” until the new Fantasy Faire opens.
- Troubadour Treats – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. An internal document lists May 23 as the reopening date, but this may just be a placeholder.
- Plaza Gardens – closed until January 2014 for the construction of the new Fantasy Faire.
Disney California Adventure
- Silly Symphony Swings – closed for refurbishment January 7 to February 17, 2013.
- Grizzly River Run – closed for refurbishment January 7 to February 28, 2013.

- 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – January 18–20.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – Cardholders have access to a private Character Meet 'N' Greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
