Celebrate New Year's Eve at the Disneyland Resort
Disneyland Resort park visitors can ring in the new year with special entertainment, shows, and music. Both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park have extended their operational hours well into the early morning for the special occasion.
Disneyland is open from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Entertainment includes “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., “Believe…In Holiday Magic” fireworks at 8:30 p.m., and Fantasmic at 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Special entertainment includes:
- New Year's Eve Countdown Central – at Sleeping Beauty's Winter Castle. 9:00 p.m. to midnight.
- “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks – special firework presentation at midnight.
- Rockin' the Rivers of America – live music, videos and special effects, including Glow with the Show ear hat interactivity, along the Rivers of America between the 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. showings of Fantasmic
- “it's a small world” Promenade Dance Party – a Fantasyland dance party including a live DJ and Disney Characters from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
- Tomorrowland Terrace Dance Party – performances by the rock group, Suburban Legends at 8:45 p.m., 9:45 p.m., 10:50 p.m., 11:45 p.m., and 12:45 p.m.

Disney California Adventure park is open from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m., With major entertainment including the Pixar Play Parade at 2:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and World of Color at 9:00 p.m., 10:15 p.m., and a special showing at 12:05 a.m. Special New Year's Eve entertainment includes:
- World of Color Countdown to Midnight – countdown to 2013 with fountains and fireworks, followed by a showing of World of Color.
- Mad T Party 2013 – ring in the new year at the Mad T Party, includes a special display of pyrotechnics at 12:00 a.m.

DCA is also planning three areas with live bands:
- Ellis Island Boys – performs at the Paradise Garden Bandstand
- Tim Gill All-Stars swing band – a swing band, performs in Carthay Circle
- The Kelly Rae Band – provides country music entertainment in Cars Land

If you want to celebrate New Year's Eve at the Disneyland Resort, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead, as the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year's are traditionally the busiest times of the year. Try and avoid exiting either theme park, since it is not uncommon for Disneyland to reach capacity and for park management to enact crowd-control restrictions that at times can include halting park entry. To celebrate New Year's Eve at the resort, pick either Disneyland or DCA and stay there; between crowds and restricted entry, park-hopping may not be a viable strategy, especially at night. Most importantly, remember to bring extra patience along and to enjoy the evening.
New exhibit opens at the Disney Gallery
The Disney Gallery quietly opened a new exhibit last week; “Realms of Fantasy” explores the creation and concepts of the Disney theme park Fantasylands as well as the storybook realms for which they are built to represent. The Realms of Fantas exhibit replaces the previous castle exhibit, Crowning Achievements.

Glow with the Show and receive special viewing
From now until the end of the holiday season, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure park provides guests wearing Glow with the Show Mickey Mouse ear hats with a special viewing opportunity for the “Believe…in Holiday Magic” fireworks, Fantasmic, and showings of World of Color. The special Glow with the Show Mickey ear hats—which sell for $24 or so around the resort, use infrared technology that enable the LED-lit ears to be controlled independently during the show—first debuted as an enhancement to World of Color this past summer.The effect creates waves of color in the crowd during a performance. The technology is impressive, as long as most guests are wearing the specialized hats.
Disney held Annual Passholder events this past summer for World of Color Glow with the Show where each guest in attendance were given complementary ears. The resulting effect of thousands of glowing ear hats synchronized in unison to the show was impressive. However impressive the technology is, the effect is highly reliant on the majority of guests purchasing and wearing these specialized hats. Even more so, that the guests are grouped together. Since Glow with the Show was rolled out this past summer, Disney has expanded the use of the technology to include interactivity during both Fantasmic and the holiday fireworks.

The offer to give guests the opportunity to have special viewing for each of these shows will help to group the Glow with the Show hats together. This should make the lighting effect much more impressive than having random light-up ears spread out in the crowd during each of the shows. Guests who want to take advantage of the special viewing locations must have their Glow with the Show ears and should look for the signs at the following locations:
- Fantasmic – near the Tom Sawyer Island Raft Dock
- “Believe…In Holiday Magic,” Glow with the Snow –on Main Street between the Photo Supply Company and Refreshment Corner.
- World of Color in the blue section– you need a Fastpass ticket, which you can obtain throughout the day at the World of Color Fastpass machines by Grizzly River Run.
These special viewing locations are on a first-come, first-served basis and capacity is limited. Also, if demand is low, Disney will open the viewing locations up to guests without Glow with the Show ears. It is best not to treat these locations as VIP reserved viewing. If you show up just before show time, you may not be able to obtain access.
Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend adds 10K race
Disneyland and runDisney have announced the addition of a 10-kilometer (6.1-mile) race to the 2013 Disneyland Resort Half Marathon Weekend. This new 10K race takes place on Saturday, August 31 (the day before the half-marathon) and makes its way through both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. A limited number of runners can also take part in the Dumbo Double Dare by participating in both the 10K on Saturday and the half-marathon on Sunday, September 1. Runners who complete both races receive a special medal in addition to the individual finisher's medals for the 10K and half marathon events.
The next runDisney race for the Disneyland Resort, the Tinker Bell Half Marathon, is scheduled for the weekend of January 18 through January 20, 2013, but all of the weekend's events, including the kids' races, Never Land Family Fun Run, and Half Marathon have been sold out for some time.
The Disneyland Half Marathon weekend is held August 30 through September 1, 2013 at the Disneyland Resort. Registration opens on January 22, 2013 and those wishing to participate should register quickly; last year's half-marathon sold out in just five weeks.
This and That…
…The Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade airs tomorrow, December 25, on ABC at 10:00 a.m. Eastern (9:00 a.m. all other time zones). The Disneyland segments are hosted by Mario Lopez and performances include the Backstreet Boys, Brad Paisley, and Lady Antebellum.
…The announcements for “Limited Time Magic,” the 2013 Disney Parks promotion that features weekly and even daily in-park surprises, begins this Friday, December 28 on the Disney Parks Blog. Read more about the announcement in our Park Update from October 22.
…Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative development team behind the Disney theme parks and resorts, celebrated its 60th anniversary this past week. WDI was initially created by Walt Disney to develop Disneyland and today consists of 1,400 talented “Imagineers” who continue to delight and entertain guests the world over. This past week, Disney paid tribute to Imagineering history with the following video:
…”Disney Junior – Live on Stage!” is receiving an update in the spring. The stage show in DCA's Hollywood Land features characters from Disney Channel's Disney Junior. Sofia the First and Doc McStuffins joins Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Jake and the Never Land Pirates starting March 2013.
…Active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from now through January 2, February 15–17, March 25 through April 5, and July 4. For more information, visit Disneyland.com.
…The prices for the 2013 Southern California CityPASS have been released. The CityPASS is an admission card that gives you access to four theme parks in Southern California at a significant, 26 percent discount, as opposed to purchasing from the respective theme parks. - Haunted Mansion – closed January 7–17, 2013 for removal of Haunted Mansion Holiday.
- Primeval World – closed January 7–23, 2013 for refurbishment, will not effect the operation of the Disneyland Railroad.
- Fantasmic! – dark January 7 to February 14, 2013 for refurbishment
- Mark Twain Riverboat – closed January 7 to March 28 for refurbishment
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed January 7 to October 30, 2013 for a major refurbishment.
- Princess Fantasy Faire/Fantasyland Theater – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. The Princess meet-and-greet is relocated to the terrace near “it's a small world” until the new Fantasy Faire opens.
- Troubadour Treats – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. An internal document lists May 23 as the reopening date, but this may just be a placeholder.
- Plaza Gardens – closed until January 2014 for the construction of the new Fantasy Faire.

- 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – January 18–20.
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 30 through September 1, 2013 at the Disneyland Resort. Registration opens on January 22, 2013 and those wishing to participate should register quickly; last year's half-marathon sold out in just five weeks.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20% merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2012.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – Discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – Cardholders have access to a private Character Meet 'N' Greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney–operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – Members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
