Disneyland Half Marathon sells out in record time; space still available via charity groups
We all know that it takes speed to cross the finish line of a runDisney event, but last Tuesday, runners discovered they also had to be quick just to get a place at the starting line for 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend events.
The newly announced 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race proved to be extremely popular, selling out in just over three hours. The Disneyland Half Marathon sold out Wednesday morning, setting a new runDisney record. Fastest of all, however, was the Dumbo Double Dare—a challenge for participants to complete both the 10K and half-marathon—which sold out in less than an hour. By the numbers, there are:
- Half marathon-only participants –12,500
- Inaugural 10K-only participants – 3,000
- Dumbo Double Dare participants – 5,000
Add in the 5K and kids' races, and runDisney expects over 25,000 runners to participate in the race weekend events.
While registration is still open (but selling quickly) for the 5K and kids races, Disney is no longer accepting registration for the 10K or half marathon events. Even so, there's still a way to get a spot at the starting line by registering with one of the official charity partners.
Running for charity brings a new element to your race experience, and I personally think it's worth doing at least once. When you run for a charity, especially one you have a personal connection to, you're suddenly not just running for yourself. I participated with Team in Training for the 2012 Disneyland Half Marathon, and the inspirational example of my friends and family who have faced and survived lymphoma helped me put all those training miles into perspective.
The runDisney website lists several teams with open spots, but two of my personal favorites are not yet listed (runDisney is updating the site):
- Team Muscle Makers – founded by MousePlanet reader Melissa (who posts as fairestoneofall), this team raises money for Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. The team has participated in several runDisney events, including last weekend's Tinker Bell Half Marathon. The team has openings for the 10K and Disneyland Half Marathon, and has a wait list for the Dumbo Double Dare. - Team in Training – one of the best-known charity organizations participating in runDisney events, their purple-clad runners and green-shirted coaches are easy to spot along the course. Team in Training works in seasons, and is currently focusing on their summer season events like the San Diego Half Marathon in June. Registration for the Fall events, including the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, usually takes place in May. If you're interested in running with Team in Training, check with your local chapter for more information.
Other runDisney charity partners include:
- A-T Cure Team (A-T Children's Project) – Ataxia-telangiectasia is a rare genetic disease that attacks children, causing progressive loss of muslce control, muscle control, immune system problems, and a high rate of cancer. The A-T Children's Project raises funds to support and coordinate biomedical research projects, scientific conferences, and a clinical center aimed at finding life-improving therapies and a cure for A-T.
- Team For Life (Lazarex Cancer Foundation) – Lazarex Cancer Foundation helps end-stage cancer patients to get a second chance at life through FDA-approved clinical trials. Lazarex reimburses patients directly for expenses incurred in a clinical trial.
- Run for our Sons (Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy) – PPMD is the largest nonprofit organization in the U.S. focused entirely on Duchenne, a form of muscular dystrophy that affects approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births. PPMD works to improve the treatment, quality of life, and long-term outlook for those affected with Duchenne, through research, advocacy, education, and compassion.
- Team SOSC (Special Olympics of Southern California) – SOSC empowers individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.
- Team TSA (Tourette Syndrome Association) – A program of the National Tourette Syndrome Association, Team TSA raises funds to continue the funding of research to discover a cause and find a cure for TS, as well as provide services for those living with TS and their families.
Every charity team has different fundraising requirements, so look around and find a group with a goal you feel you can meet. And don't forget to see if your company offers a matching gift program—that's a great way to double your fundraising results.
If you don't feel like fundraising, you can also secure your spot in the Disneyland Half Marathon events by booking a race travel package through one of the official partner Tour Operators. This is a less-attractive option for locals who don't necessarily need transportation and hotel rooms, but check to see what packages may be available.

Extended DCA hours for Annual Passholders in February
Sharp-eyed MousePlanet reader PixieDust58 found an new offer for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders on the official AP website, but so far we've seen no official announcement from Disney about the new perk.
According to the Disney site, “On Thursday nights throughout February 2013, Annual Passholders have the opportunity to stay late in Disney California Adventure Park. The park will stay open for an additional 2 hours after regular closing for Passholders to explore most attractions, stores and dining locations in Disney California Adventure Park.”
The dates are:
- February 7 – regular park closing 8:00 p.m.
- February 14 – regular park closing 8:00 p.m.
- February 21 – regular park closing 9:00 p.m.
- February 28 – regular park closing 8:00 p.m.
Advance registration is not required to attend the event, but you must claim a wristband in person at Disney California Adventure starting at noon on each of the event days. The extra hours event is open only to Annual Passholders—non-AP friends and family may not participate.

…David Koenig reported last week at Disneyland cast members will soon have a new pharmacy available to them right on property as part of a newly expanded Cast Health facility.
…The World of Color show at Disney California Adventure goes on hiatus January 28 to 31 and again February 4 to 7 for the first major refurbishment since the show debuted in 2011.
…A cast member reader let us know that merchandise from last weekend's Tinker Bell half marathon weekend has landed at the employee-only Company D clearance store, and is selling for 75 percent off the original price.

- Disneyland west entrance tunnel, Tour Gardens and west Guide Stand – closed for refurbishment through January 31.

- Troubadour Treats – closed until Summer 2013 for refurbishment of the Fantasyland Theater. An internal document lists May 23 as the reopening date, but this may just be a placeholder.
- Plaza Gardens – closed until January 2014 for the construction of the new Fantasy Faire.

- A Salute to the Golden Horseshoe Revue – Limited Time Magic event. Thursdays through Mondays, January 10 through February 4, 2013.
- New Orleans Bayou Bash – A Limited Time Magic event. Entertainment and characters in New Orleans Square from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m on January 25–27; February 1–3, 8–12.
- Lunar New Year – A Limited Time Magic event. February 8–11 from 10:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. at Disney California Adventure park.
- Famed miniaturist Robert Olszewski appears at Disneyana on Disneyland's Main Street on February 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Olszewski will be on hand for his final release in the Main Street Electrical Parade series, To Honor America. A limited number of sculptures are also available for purchase online at ArtofDisneyParks.com
- Grad Nite events – this party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland after the park closes to the public for the night.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 30 through September 1 at the Disneyland Resort. Registration for the 10K and Half Marathon are both sold out, although spaces are still available through charity teams and select travel agencies.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Other Discounts
Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from now through January 2, February 15–17, March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20% merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10% off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20% off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
