Disneyland voluntarily closes two E-ticket rides due to safety citations
by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix, Bryan Pugh, and Lani Teshima
On Friday, the Walt Disney Company received a citation and notification of penalty (PDF) from the State of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) that originated from an investigation involving an accident last November when a maintenance worker slid from the roof of Space Mountain.
MousePlanet has spoken with Suzi Brown, Disneyland Resort's Director of Media Relations and External Communications, who said Disney has received the notification of the citations and is working with Cal/OSHA to fully review them.
On Saturday, Disney voluntarily closed Space Mountain and the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland, and Soarin' Over California in Disney California Adventure park. Brown said that these closures, which were not mandated by Cal/OSHA, were related to after-hours maintenance work and not to operational concerns of Space Mountain in terms of the safety of park guests or ride operator cast members during normal business hours.
Essentially, Space Mountain is not unsafe to ride—instead, the citation addresses the lack of fall protection for nightly maintenance, and without nightly maintenance, the rides cannot be opened to guests.
Brown said the Cal/OSHA citations prompted a re-review of Disneyland's safety protocols for cast members and contractors. “We constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors—we are reviewing certain protocols,” she said.
Cal/OSHA's notification lists multiple issues, and some of them are relatively minor, such as not being able to immediately produce five years worth of maintenance records for Space Mountain's air conditioning system to the Cal/OSHA inspector. There are, however, other items that Cal/OSHA has categorized as “willful serious” violations related to maintenance worker safety.
The most notable violations involve the required implementation and maintenance of the upper exterior platform of Space Mountain to change lights, and perform other maintenance tasks without the protection of guardrails or personal fall protection. Also mentioned was the required, but not implemented, installation of anchorages for support lines and safety lines. Instead Disney allowed workers to use unapproved anchorages when they cleaned the exterior of Space Mountain.
These citations are in response to a November 2012 accident, in which a maintenance worker suffered a serious injury when his unapproved anchorage failed and caused him to slide down the roof of Space Mountain while cleaning.
The citation states, “In failing to take… the above described actions, the employer, Disneyland Resort, willfully failed to comply with the law and willfully failed to address known hazards.”
These violations have resulted in $234,850 in fines, which Disney has 15 days to appeal.

Erroneous reports circulated on the Internet over the weekend that Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage were also closed due to the Cal/OSHA notification. According to Brown, Disney never closed Splash Mountain, and park operations report that the attraction experienced no down time during the weekend. While both Indiana Jones Adventure and Finding Nemo experienced delayed openings, Brown noted that neither were related to the Cal/OSHA citation.
On Sunday, Disney reopened the Matterhorn Bobsleds, but both Space Mountain and Soarin' Over California remain closed (with no estimated time of reopening) while Disney evaluates the situation. In the meantime, Disney has postponed this week's originally scheduled closure of the Matterhorn Bobsleds (from April 16 to 19) while two of the resort's major attractions are closed.
Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries opens at Innoventions
Disneyland breathed new life into Innovnetions this past weekend by opening a new exhibit based on the upcoming third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise. On its first day open to regular day guests, Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries produced wait times of 30 to 45 minutes, something unseen at Innoventions. The exhibit features Tony Stark's Hall of Armor, a display featuring the evolution of the Iron Man armor suits, from the clunky Mark I to the sleek Mark VII.

The exhibit also features an impressive use of simulation technology that allow guests to “suit up” in the Iron Man Mark 42 armor and test some of its features. Guests stand in a designated spot and let the simulation technology display themselves wearing the armor. Guests can then move freely, controlling the onscreen version of themselves with their own bodies.

The new exhibit is a welcome addition to Innoventions, a space that had become stale and rarely visited by many Disneyland guests. On Saturday, guests began to line up outside of Innoventions an hour before the attraction opened. Because the exhibit is small and space is limited, Disney controlled the number of guests allowed inside at one time. The line was seen extending across the top of the upper level, down the ramp, and across the front of the building. Saturday, however, was the first day for the Iron Man Tech exhibit, and demand should taper off over the coming weeks.
Disney Legend Harrison “Buzz” Price Honored with a window on Main Street U.S.A.
Disney Legend Harrison “Buzz” Price, a research economist who worked with Walt Disney, was honored this past week with a window on Main Street U.S.A. Buzz Price is credited with selecting the site where Disneyland was constructed—a 160-acre spot in Anaheim in 1953, then mostly orange groves and a few farm houses. Years later, Price also helped select the Central Florida location where Walt Disney World would be eventually constructed. He also conducted the feasibility study for the Tokyo Disneyland project.

During the window dedication, Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said, “Buzz Price was a true Disney Legend in every sense of the word whose extraordinary contributions left a lasting mark on Walt Disney Company that few can match. In addition to helping Walt select the locations for both Disneyland and the Walt Disney World Resort, Buzz played a significant role in virtually every project that has made Disney Parks an iconic institution.”
Fairies Week flies into Disneyland for Limited Time Magic
Today is Monday, and with the new week comes a new Limited Time Magic promotion for the Disneyland Resort. From April 15 through 21 (today through Sunday), Disneyland hosts Fairies Week. For a limited time, Tinker Bell will be joined by Fawn, Iridessa, Rosetta, Silvermist, Vidia, and Terence as they appear throughout the day at Pixie Hollow.
Guests can find their favorite fairies from 9:00 a.m.. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Saturday through Sunday inside Pixie Hollow at Disneyland park.
Guests meet Long Lost Friends during Limited Time Magic at Disneyland
Last week's Limited Time Magic event, Long Lost Friends Week, provided guests with the opportunity to meet with Disney characters who are rarely—if ever—seen at Disneyland. The event was held in Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree, and featured long-lost Disney characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Duck Tales, Three Little Pigs, and Pocahontas.

Five meet-and-greet locations were set up throughout Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree, with new characters being introduced by a host every 30 minutes. Since guests were not able to obtain autographs, Disney provided attendees with pre-autographed cards instead. Long Lost Friends Week was a great opportunity to obtain once-in-a-lifetime photos.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2013
- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2013 will be held on 22 dates in 2013: May 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31; June 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21. The 2013 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disneyland Park after the park closes to the public for the night.
- MousePlanet's Mouseadventure Musical – Sunday, May 19. See MouseAdventure.com for details.
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – August 30 through September 1 at the Disneyland Resort.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 20, 2012.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
