The Lone Ranger sets new standard for theme park movie premieres
If I ruled the Kingdom, all movie premieres would forevermore be hosted at Disney California Adventure park rather than at Disneyland. Now out of its awkward phase, the reimagined DCA is a perfectly lovely venue for movie premieres (heck, there's a replica of the Carthay Circle Theater right there), and Anaheim's second gate has more options and a better layout for these types of events. The case was more than made for me this weekend, when the Lone Ranger media circus came to town.

Better traffic flow
When Disneyland hosts a movie premiere, Main Street U.S.A. becomes the red carpet, and pedestrian traffic is shunted to the sidewalks. On those occasions when the park remained open through the celebrity arrivals, day guests were sent through backstage corridors to reach the areas of the park still open to them.

The story is the same at Disney California Adventure, where Buena Vista Street becomes the red carpet—but that park has loads of experience with getting guests through the gates without using Buena Vista Street. The alternate entrance used throughout the park's expansion project was put into play again this weekend, providing a quick and direct route into the park and away from the red carpet chaos.
Better red carpet experience for fans
There's not a lot Disney can do to make it more comfortable for fans to wait in the sun for eight hours just to get a momentary passing glimpse of a star (or more accurately, not a lot Disney likely wants to do at the risk of attracting even larger crowds), but it felt like the company did a lot right with this event. The mini-risers set up around Carthay Circle helped create more space, and there was plenty of guest control to help make sure that everyone was on their best behavior.

Having live entertainment along the red carpet wasn't new for DCA, but it was nice to see the “Citizens of Buena Vista Street” out in character, helping reinforce the theme of a Hollywood movie premiere. The free Lone Ranger masks and buttons were a nice surprise, as well.

Also not due to the move to DCA, but a definite perk for those eligible, was the Visa Signature area along the red carpet. There was plenty of prime viewing available in this area right up until the celebrity arrivals began, so it's something to keep in mind for future events. After seeing the media pit where my fellow photographers were stationed, I think the fans in the Visa section had a much better experience.
It's difficult to compare the length of DCA's red carpet to the Disneyland set-up, but it seemed this layout did a good job of creating “zones” along the path. The major broadcast media were all in a ring near the front of the carpet, providing both a great backdrop for their live shots but also an alternate route for those not doing press.

Further down the carpet, there were very few spots where media stood right across from fans, which meant the celebrities didn't have to work both sides of the carpet, or ignore the fans in favor of the media.
With the Carthay Circle restaurant and its neighboring private 1901 lounge located about the midpoint of the carpet (after the major media outlets but before the largest groups of fans), the stars had a chance to take a moment to refresh inside an air-conditioned lounge before braving the final stretch. By the time the stars were past the Carthay Circle Theatre, it was all about the fans. My minor quibble about the set up is that there appeared to be plenty of room here to add more risers along the Hollywood Blvd. stretch.
Better theme park experience for park visitors
The 2011 premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at Disneyland had a great impact on park operations: Two weeks to construct an outdoor theater, including closing the Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, and Tom Sawyer's Island, altered park hours for Disneyland on event day (with the park closing at 5:00 p.m. instead of midnight), and several lands closing even earlier for set-up.

Compare that to the impact of The Lone Ranger premiere at Disney California Adventure park. Hollywood Land closed at two for the red carpet and Cars Land closed one hour earlier than normal due to the after party, but the overall park hours remained unchanged and the rest of the park operated as normal. Those visitors who had no interest in meeting Mr. Depp and crew had almost the entire park at their disposal, with minimal event-related closures.
Better theater venue
To be certain, the actual film screening is completely secondary to the pomp and circumstance of a movie premiere—but if you had your choice between a real theater seat or a perch on a bleacher, which would you choose? Disney California Adventure has two existing indoor theaters that can easily accommodate 2,000 people with minimal infrastructure changes, plus an empty sound stage that can serve as a VIP lounge, catering venue, or activity center. Both theaters are located right in Hollywood Land, a perfect backdrop for a movie premiere.

By comparison, Disneyland builds a theater from scratch every time it hosts a premiere, constructing a massive screen on Tom Sawyer Island, erecting risers along the Rivers of America, and designing a sound system to re-create an in-theater experience. And Disneyland always has to look to the weather when hosting these outdoor events.
I don't know how Disney plans to handle premieres in the future, but my preference is clear. Holding these types of events in DCA makes so much more sense in every way I can see, but most importantly, it lets the theme parks continue to serve their regular park visitors, who didn't come for the added show.
The sound of summer at Disneyland
Disneyland has its own unique set of seasons. There's pumpkin pie fudge season, when a favorite treat is offered for a brief period. There's also candy cane season, baby duckling season, cheerleader season, and “whew, the crowds are gone but the Christmas tree is still up” season.

For me, there's also band season, marked by the annual return of the Disneyland Resort All-American College Band. A tradition since 1971, and now under the direction of Professor Ron McCurdy of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, the All-American College Band brings 21 talented college musicians from all over the country to perform every summer at Disneyland.

For 2013, the group is scheduled to perform five sets a day at various locations in both parks. The first performance is a stage set in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot at 1:50 p.m. Here, the group shows off its jazz ensemble and big band skills. The next performance, at 3:25 p.m., is in a new location for the group, the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree.
The All-American College Band performs in the Flag Retreat in Town Square around 6:00 p.m., and ends its day with a performance in front of the Main Street Train Station featuring hits from Michael Jackson, and the band Earth, Wind & Fire.

My favorite performance is the Castle Forecourt set at 5:00 p.m. It's surprisingly easy to get a front-and-center view of this show—just follow the band as it marches into position, and join the crowd that quickly forms around them.
The All-American College Band is some real “Limited Time Magic” at Disneyland, with a season lasting just 11 weeks. You can catch them every Tuesday through Sunday. The show times may not appear on the Disneyland entertainment guide, but they're well worth making an effort to see. …The fence around the pond between Fantasy Faire and Main Street has been replaced by a higher temporary barrier covered with silk plants, and a new fence is reportedly in the works. The old fence was deemed too short and the water below too deep, to be safe in the event a guest “accidentally” climbed over it and jumped into the water. The change is not related to any specific incident, but is another of the abundance-of-caution changes we're seeing around the theme parks lately.

- Tower of Terror – reduced capacity now through January 1, 2014. This usually means one of the rides three drop shafts is closed for refurbishment, and that the ride is running at 2/3 capacity.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
