Celebrating July Fourth at the Disneyland Resort
The Disneyland Resort's weeklong celebration of Independence Day kicks off tonight with the first performance of “Disney's Celebrate America! A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky” fireworks show. The holiday show continues nightly at 9:30 p.m. through Sunday, July 7, after which “Magical” returns as the summer fireworks show. Also starting tonight, Disney California Adventure presents an Independence Day preshow to World of Color on Sunday, which also runs through July 7.
As part of the Limited Time Magic promotion, the Disneyland Resort is featuring performances by several military bands throughout the week, in addition to the traditional appearance of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band. Joining the Marines are various ensembles from the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, including its Concert Band, The Dixieland Tailgaters Dixieland band, Global Strike rock band, Golden Tones saxophone quintet, and Fuego Azule Latin band. Disneyland's Fantasmic is on the summer schedule, with performances at 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly. With Independence Day falling on Thursday, Disneyland has not officially scheduled a third performance for that day. As always, park managers may add another performance if park attendance reaches a certain threshold.
Parking is often a problem during the Independence Day holiday, and it is not uncommon for the Mickey and Friends parking structure to reach capacity early in the day. We suggest you try the Toy Story lot south of Katella Avenue on Harbor Boulevard, which offers bus service to the Disneyland Resort and is generally easier to get into, especially for people arriving from south of the resort.
In past years, the Downtown Disney parking lot suspended the standard three-hour grace period and imposed a flat $15 up front for vehicles entering after 6:00 p.m., to discourage people from parking in Downtown Disney to watch the Disneyland fireworks for free from the esplanade between Disneyland and DCA. We have yet to hear whether the resort plans to do this again this year, but we expect it to. If you have to pay the fee, you should be able to get a refund with a table-service restaurant or AMC movie theater validation.
Disney Parks introduce Segway alternative for guests with disabilities
Following a years-long legal roller coaster that has included rulings, appeals, dismissals, and settlements, Walt Disney World very quietly rolled out (pardon the pun) a small fleet of Electric Standing Vehicles (ESVs) for use in the theme parks earlier this year—and we now hear that the devices have also been delivered to the Disneyland Resort. The rental vehicles are part of a settlement regarding the use of privately owned Segway Human Transport devices by guests with certain disabilities who prefer to use a standing mobility conveyance rather a seated electric wheelchair or scooter (electric conveyance vehicle, or ECV).
Disney successfully fought to maintain its ban on the use of such devices, which can travel up to 12 miles per hour, more than double the speed of the ECVs the company rents for use in the parks. Disney cited safety concerns about the use of the vehicles in the theme parks, despite at the time offering guided Segway tours of Disney's California Adventure and Epcot during park hours, and allowing certain cast members to use the devices inside the theme parks.

As part of the settlement, Disney modified the standard ECV by extending the steering column, placing the storage basket on the back of the unit, and configuring the seat cushion to serve as a back rest. The four-wheeled ESV has the same “footprint” as the standard Disney scooter, travels at the same speed, uses the same toggle bar control, and has the same 450-pound weight limit.
Don't expect to see dozens of the devices rolling down Main Street, U.S.A. anytime soon. MousePlanet learned the devices were due to arrive over a month ago, but until a recent trip to Walt Disney World, none of our staff had been able to find one in use in the parks. Cast members are extremely reluctant to discuss the devices, referring all inquiries to a manager. We did learn that the rental fee is the same $50 per day, plus $20 key deposit charged for ECVs.
Magic Kingdom guest Ricardo was the operator of the ESV we spotted in the Magic Kingdom, and was happy to answer our questions about the device. He said that in order to rent Disney's ESV, he has to bring his personal Segway personal transporter to the entrance of a theme park, where security escorted him inside to the wheelchair rental counter. There, a manager was summoned to handle the transaction. Ricardo left his Segway with Disney, where it was kept in the stroller and wheelchair storeroom, and checked out the ESV. He said the unit is much slower and more difficult to steer than his personal Segway, and that he would still prefer to use his own device.
After posting a photo of the device this weekend, many readers questioned why anyone would choose to use a Segway instead of a seated wheelchair or scooter. MousePlanet reader Lindsay Contreras is one of the thousands of people who use a Segway as a mobility aid, and explained on our Facebook page:
“I have spina bifida and EDS [Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, group of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissues]. I can stand usually for a while but walking long distances is nearly impossible because it requires more muscle tone, which, due to my EDS, is impossible to accomplish because the disease depletes it. I can sit but it is not very comfortable to sit for a long period of time, [as] my legs will twitch, and my docs prefer I stand long as possible before breaks of sitting.”

Get ready to register for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend
Registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend events opens on July 9, but we know of two early registration opportunities that start this week. Starting Friday July 5, Disneyland Resort annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members can register for the events before the general public. This early registration is via links that should be posted on the AP and DVC websites on July 5, so check there or keep an eye on the Team MousePlanet forum for updates as we have them.
If you have both an annual pass and a DVC membership, it's best to use the DVC link, which offers a $10 discount on the half marathon. Disney Visa cardholders are frequently offered an early registration option as well, but so far we've seen nothing to indicate this will be the case for the Tinker Bell races.
With some registration starting this week, we still don't know if Disney plans to add a surprise 10K (6.2-mile) race to the line-up. As we reported last month, a reader came across a page on the Active.com website (the company runDisney uses for race registration) that included pricing for a commemorative 10K pin, but no other mention of a 10K race. That page was quickly removed from the Active.com website, but last week we found another page which lists pricing for the 10K race, but no dates. Further, MousePlanet's Adrienne Krock noted that the event weekend dates were changed from January 17–19 to January 16–19, a change not reflected on the runDisney website. Starting the event weekend a day early could leave room for races on Friday.
Saving Storybook Land
In a MousePlanet article last week, David Koenig writes that original buildings from the Cinderella Village section of Storybook Land have been saved from the scrap heap and donated to the Carolwood Foundation, caretakers of Walt's Barn in Griffith Park. The collection includes original Storybook Land models built by Wathel Rogers, Fred Jeorger and Harriet Burns, and used in the attraction until it was renovated in the 1980s. Disney animator Rob Fendler (director of the Disney shorts series Swampy's Underground Adventures), is leading the restoration effort, and the foundation is seeking donations to help preserve the 57-year-old buildings.

- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed through October 30 for a major refurbishment.
- Market House / Disneyana – closed for construction of new Starbucks location. Disneyana has already moved into the Disney Gallery space on Main Street. Official opening date has not been determined.
Disney California Adventure
- Tower of Terror – reduced capacity now through January 1, 2014. This usually means one of the rides three drop shafts is closed for refurbishment, and that the ride is running at 2/3 capacity.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5×7 photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
