Trimming the wick on Candlelight?
David Koenig reports:
Disneyland has just published its internal calendar for special events in December and is showing just two evenings of Candlelight Processional, December 7 and 8—down from 40 performances last year over 20 nights.
Unfortunately, every cast member you ask has a different explanation:
- The cutback is primarily due to cost and the event’s heavy impact on park operations.
- New resort president Michael Colglazier believes that having Candlelight on so many nights diminishes its magic.
- Be patient. More dates will be announced shortly.
- These are just the dates for Disneyland, in Town Square. Other performances may be added at DCA’s Hyperion Theater (although nothing is currently shown on the DCA calendar).
Time will tell what Disney plans—and just how hot a ticket Dec. 7 & 8 will be.
The diminished Candlelight calendar for 2013 is another sign that Disneyland just doesn't know exactly what they want this event to be. Some years it's a a “thank you” of sorts for corporate sponsors, senior executives, and Club 33 members; in other years, it's a public spectacle with tickets and dining packages. This mixed message makes it difficult for fans of the ceremony to plan their annual trips to see it.
The schedule also leaves room for rumors about a possible after-hours hard-ticket holiday event like Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. Disney hasn't said an official word about these rumors, but there's no question the resort would like to find a way to replicate the wildly successful Halloween event. The trick will be to create an event that has enough extra entertainment and special offerings to encourage ticket sales, without removing traditional holiday offerings that repeat visitors depend on when booking their holiday trips.
When Disneyland launched its Halloween party, it took the popular Halloween Screams fireworks show off the normal Halloween entertainment schedule and made it an event-only offering, angering many Disneyland fans.
runDisney adds a 10K and changes schedules for Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend
It's official: runDisney has added a 10K race to the list of events for Disneyland Resort's Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend scheduled for January 2014. We've been tracking the rumors for a month, and runDisney finally confirmed the new 6.2-mile race last Thursday, the day before early registration opened for Disneyland Resort annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members. While 10-kilometer races have long been a staple in the road racing community, runDisney has only recently jumped on the bandwagon. The distance is a particularly popular one, but while this inaugural event is certain to be a sell-out. adding the race has created a scheduling challenge that has some families extremely upset.
Historically, the typical schedule for a runDisney West Coast half-marathon weekend has had the Family Fun Run 5K and kids' races on Saturday morning, with the main event on Sunday. This schedule held even after runDisney added an inaugural 10K to the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend scheduled for this September—the 5K and 10K are both scheduled for Saturday, with the half-marathon on Sunday.
For the Tinker Bell event, race organizers expanded the event weekend by bringing everything forward by a day, starting the expo on Thursday instead of Friday as originally scheduled. The 10K and kids' races are all scheduled for Saturday, but the Never Land Family Fun Run 5K was moved to Friday.
For most parents, this means pulling their children out of school on Friday to participate in the 5K, not to mention taking the day off of work themselves. As our Parenting in the Parks editor Adrienne Krock noted, for families travelling to attend the race, this also means another night of hotel rooms, another day of purchasing Disneyland Resort food, and another day of theme park admission for those who don't have annual passes. “This was, clearly, a greedy decision,” Krock said. “Nothing will convince me otherwise.”
The last-minute schedule change also left organizers of charity teams scrambling to get the correct information out to their participants, and forced families who had already made travel arrangements to rebook their reservations.
If you're interested in any of the races of the Tinker Bell Half Marathon, and especially the new 10K or the popular half-marathon, we recommend registering as early as possible. If you are a Disneyland Resort annual passholder or a Disney Vacation Club member, early registration continues through today—find the links on our MousePad discussion forum. If you don't have access to a early registration option, we strongly suggest being ready at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time (noon on the East coast) to register as soon as possible via the runDisney website.
2013 CHOC Walk at the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, October 13
Team MousePlanet returns for our sixth consecutive year at the CHOC Walk in the Park, benefiting Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $34,000 for CHOC since 2008.
One of the best things about walking with Team MousePlanet is that we handle check-in for our walkers. Instead of making you drive to Irvine the week before the race to collect your wristband and T-shirt, we do that for you, so long as you've met your $50 minimum fundraising goal by Friday, October 4. You only have to meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, and then head right into Disneyland to start the walk. [If you meet your goal on or after October 5, you can still walk; you just have to take care of the sign-in yourself.]
The 2013 race is on Sunday, October 13 at the Disneyland Resort. Team registration is now open! Come join us for a day you won't soon forget.
Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet?
Two more CHOC events
CHOC has two more fundraising events scheduled at the Disneyland Resort this fall. Both are returning events, and both have sold out in past years.
Taste of Downtown Disney – Thursday, August 15
Children's Hospital Orange County is hosting its sixth annual Taste of Downtown Disney event on Thursday, August 15. Join CHOC for a night of food, wine, and spirits from most of the Downtown Disney restaurants, with live entertainment, free valet parking, and the opportunity to help out an outstanding local charity. Tickets are $75 per person, and all proceeds benefit CHOC Children's. The press release reads:
Join us on Thursday, August 15 as we taste and savor the flavors of fine cuisine, wine and spirits while enjoying the unique ambience and flair of the Downtown Disney District. Top off the evening by indulging in decadent desserts and coffee from La Brea Bakery Café and Jamba Juice. Live entertainment will also be featured throughout the evening for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy a reception, tray passed appetizers, olive oil tasting and select wine/spirits/beer pairings at Catal Restaurant & Uva Bar, ESPN Zone, House of Blues, Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, WonderGround Gallery, Tortilla Jo's. The evening ends with savory treats from La Brea Bakery Café, smoothies from Jamba Juice.
Last year we offered a new experience, the Tortilla Jo’s Tequila Lounge. This exclusive experience was a tremendous success and will be available this year. Tickets for the lounge are limited!
For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the event website.
Paint the Way to Miracles & Magic – Saturday, July 20
During this annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County, 192 participants will help paint one of two tile murals that will be displayed in Downtown Disney for the year. The press release reads:
CHOC Children’s and the Downtown Disney District would like to invite all young artists to participate in an exclusive and rare opportunity. Children will be able to hand paint a custom tile that will be installed in a beautiful, lighted display in Downtown Disney. These original hand painted tiles will be prominently displayed on the walkway between the Disneyland Hotel and the Downtown Disney District. You, your family and friends will be able to view the artwork any time you visit the Disneyland Resort and the Downtown Disney District.
Please join us on Saturday, July 20, 2013, in the Downtown Disney District where children will “Paint The Way To Miracles & Magic.” This fun filled CHOC Children’s fundraiser is limited to only 192 tiles, so act now by reserving your tile or tiles today.
- The tile painting schedule for the day will be divided into six sessions.
- You may choose the time of day from the painting schedule posted below.
- The first session will start at 9:00 a.m. with the last session beginning at 2:00 p.m.
- Each painting session will accommodate 32 children.
Parents, grandparents, relatives and friends may accompany their children and will be able to view the children painting. When each session is over, all of the fun and magic of the Downtown Disney District awaits you.
We wish to thank our friends from the Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney District, Kaman’s Art Shoppe and Color Me Mine for making this event possible.
All proceeds benefit Children’s Hospital of Orange County and the 23rd annual CHOC Walk in the Park on October 13, 2013.
Registration is $50 per child.
This and that…
…Sactown magazine reports that the “CALIFORNIA” letters that once stood outside the entrance to Disney California Adventure park have been installed at the entrance of the California State Fair in Sacramento. The landmark letters were donated after Disney removed them as part of the makeover of DCA's main entrance. The 2013 State Fair opens to the public on July 12.
…Several readers pointed out that Disneyland.com has a new look, with graphics and a layout that reflect the revamped Walt Disney World site. As part of the layout, the site boasts a new stylized map of the resort area. Reader Michael noted that he isn't a fan of the top-down view in the WDW maps, but said:
“The revamped DLR maps are kind of silly for another reason. They include the same 'green space' surrounding and outside the parks. That makes sense at WDW, which really looks that way. Except the DLR maps also include the Good Neighbor hotels, the convention center, etc. So the new maps make it look like the Anaheim Resort District is one big green forest with a few buildings in it.”
Disneyland.com has a new park map that seems to show the surrounding area as a vast green forest—never mind those Good Neighbor hotels across the street. Map © Disney and Google.

Winter
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. Registration for all weekend activities opens to the general public on July 9; early registration now open for Disneyland Resort annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency. |

If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
