Fall refurbishment updates
We have an updated list of attraction closures and refurbishments for the Fall 2013 season to help you plan your next trip to the Disneyland Resort.:
Disneyland
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed through October 30 for a major refurbishment.
- Market House / Disneyana – closed for construction of new Starbucks location. Disneyana has already moved into the Disney Gallery space on Main Street. Official opening date has not been determined.
- Mad Tea Party – closed August 1-9 for refurbishment.
- Haunted Mansion – closed August 26 through September 12 for refurbishment.
- Rafts to Tom Sawyer's Island – closed September 3 & 4 for refurbishment.
- Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm – closed September 3–12 for installation of the holiday overlay.
- Mickey's Toontown House– closed September 3–26 for refurbishment.
- King Arthur Carrousel – closed September 3 through October 10 for refurbishment.
- Mark Twain Riverboat – closed September 9–12 for refurbishment.
- Space Mountain – closed September 9–12 for installation of the holiday overlay.

- Tower of Terror – reduced capacity now through January 1, 2014. This usually means one of the rides three drop shafts is closed for refurbishment, and that the ride is running at 2/3 capacity.
- Toy Story Midway Mania – closed September 16–19 for refurbishment.
- Disney Animation Building – partial closures September 30 – October 29 for maintenance.
Anaheim-area protests prompt relocation of Disney College Program housing
A protest in Downtown Anaheim Sunday afternoon prompted Disney to temporarily house Disney College Program participants at the Disneyland Hotel this weekend.
On Saturday, MousePlanet learned that members of Disney's College Program were told to pack their essentials and report to the Disneyland Hotel for temporary housing assignments. These cast members were not told how long to expect to stay at the Disneyland Hotel, but their relocation was prompted by a planned “1 Year After Anaheim” protest at Anaheim City Hall, just a block away from the Downtown Anaheim apartment complex that houses participants in Disney's College Program.
Sunday's protest was organized by the ANSWER Coalition to mark the anniversary of an officer-involved shooting in Anaheim last July. That shooting sparked four days of protests in 2012, including an evening demonstration that escalated into a small riot in Downtown Anaheim, and a daytime march from Anaheim City Hall to Disneyland. Demonstrators in that protest were stopped just north of the Disneyland Resort by a line of police in riot gear stationed at the intersection of Ball Road and Harbor Boulevard.
Organizers of Sunday's march called for a peaceful demonstration, and bussed demonstrators from San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area to participate. However, given recent calls by celebrities and activists, including comedian Dick Gregory, to boycott Florida companies like Disney in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict, some were concerned that the Anaheim demonstrators would be joined by Justice for Trayvon groups. Similar protests last week in Los Angeles and Oakland escalated into violence, and it seems Disney wanted to make sure its College Program cast members weren't caught in the middle if this demonstration got out of hand.
Another protest, unrelated to the shootings, is planned for the City Hall area on Tuesday night. We don't know when the College Program cast members will return to their apartments, but that decision will likely be influenced by the outcome of Sunday's demonstration, which was still ongoing at press time.
Court sides with Disneyland in Segway suit
The Metropolitan News-Enterprise reports that the Fourth District Court of Appeal has sided with Disneyland in a lawsuit brought by a woman who was suing for the right to use her personal Segway device inside the Anaheim theme park. As we reported last year, Tina Baughman brought suit after she requested and was denied permission to use her Segway Personal Transportation Device during a trip to Disneyland. A district court originally ruled in Disney's favor, saying the company was not required to allow visitors like Baughman to use a Segway inside the theme parks because the company permitted other mobility devices, like motorized wheelchairs and scooters.
In a 2012 ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals told Disney that it may be required to allow visitors to use Segway devices in place of motorized wheelchairs or scooters unless the company could demonstrate that the devices posed an actual danger to theme park guests. Earlier this year, a U.S. District Court dismissed Baughman's suit, citing the settlement in Ault v. Walt Disney World Co., which allowed Disney to maintain the Segway ban while working to develop a four-wheel alternative to the two-wheel Segway.
As we reported earlier this month, Disney recently introduced the new four-wheeled Electric Standing Vehicles (ESVs) in the domestic theme parks. Disney modified the standard ECV by extending the steering column, placing the storage basket on the back of the unit, and configuring the seat cushion to serve as a back rest. The four-wheeled ESV has the same “footprint” as the standard Disney scooter, travels at the same speed, uses the same toggle bar control, and has the same 450-pound weight limit.

This and that…
…This week's Limited Time Magic promotion is Christmas in July. From the description posted on the Disney website, it looks like this is a clever excuse to prompt visitors to begin their holiday shopping early. The focus of the promotion is a new collection of Ear hat-shaped Christmas ornaments, available for sale in both theme parks and Downtown Disney. Select food locations will sell holiday treats, including gingerbread cookies and peppermint ice cream sundaes.

Summer
- D23 Expo – August 9–11. Tickets for the three-day convention are now on sale.
- 6th Annual Taste of Downtown Disney – Thursday, August 15. This annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County includes appetizers and wine tasting at several participating Downtown Disney restaurants. Tickets are now on sale.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend (sold out) – August 30 through September 1 at the Disneyland Resort.
Fall
- Halloween Time – September 13 to October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party – September 27; October 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 31. Tickets go on sale July 8 for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders. The general public can buy tickets starting July 15.
- 23rd Annual CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 13. The annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 14, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. 2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half marathon event is sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K, 10K and kids races.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
| Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. Other Discounts
Military 3-Day Park Hopper Discount – active and retired U.S. military can now purchase up to six 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hoppers at the discounted price of $125 each, a 50 percent savings off the regular adult price. The tickets may be used through September 28, 2013 with block-out days from March 25 through April 5, and July 4.
Valid only for active duty or retired U.S. Military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid and active U.S. Military (or Military spouse) ID required for purchase and admission. Limited to one (1) purchase of up to six (6) tickets per valid ID and Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission.
Annual Passholder offers – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Disney Visa – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores, 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café), and 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward.
ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
