D23 “teases” fans about Star Wars plans
If anyone walked into the D23 Expo last weekend expecting Disney to throw open the doors of Imagineering and show detailed plans for the rumored new Star Wars-based attractions for Disneyland and Walt Disney World, they probably had not been keeping up on the latest statements from Disney. After the official Disney Insider published an article promising “teasers for new attractions based on Avatar and Star Wars,” Walt Disney Imagineering's communications and media relations manager reacted quickly, saying, “There will be teases to Star Wars and to Avatar but nothing about any attractions or experiences based on those properties. Nor are we releasing any new information on those at the D23 Expo.”
Well, there are teases and there are teases. There's the type of teasing where you feel included in the joke, and there's the type of teasing where you feel you are the joke. After touring the Parks and Resorts pavillion, I have to say that personally, I'm not sure on which side of that line Disney's Star Wars tease was intended to fall.
Disney said there would be no major announcements at this D23 Expo, and the Orange Harvest exhibit keeps that promise. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
At first glance, the pile of wooden shipping crates located prominently inside the entrance to the Parks and Resorts pavillion, some partially opened and spilling packing straw across the floor, seemed out of place. Upon closer examination, I saw that the crates were stenciled with the words “Orange Harvest” in a familiar Star Wars font. Orange Harvest seems an appropriate code name when you consider that both domestic resorts were built on former orange groves, and “Blue Harvest” was the working title for Return of the Jedi.
This Orange Harvest crate is full of “top secret plans,” and advertises “speculation beyond imagination.” Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
I kept reading. The crate marked “top secret plans” had blueprints spilling out the top. “Can we look at those?” I asked the Imagineer guarding the exhibit. “I'm sorry, no,” she replied with a smile. Below the Orange Harvest logo, the crate was stamped “speculation beyond imagination.” Another crate was stamped, “contents already spoiled.” That seemed an especially pointed reference to all of the recent online speculation about the rumored new Star Wars lands and attractions.
It seemed that the closer I looked for some insight into what Disney was planning, the more I found myself being rebuked for doing so. It was as if Disney was saying “this is all we're showing you—don't look too closely, or you won't like what you find.” At first I thought it was just me, but as I spoke to other media and random D23 guests, it seems that a lot of people came away with that impression of the Star Wars “tease.” Intentional or not (and I'm afraid of the true answer to that), it really felt like the Orange Harvest presence was designed to actively discourage people from asking too many questions about the rumored new attractions.

Maybe Disney wants us to be excited enough about these future projects that we'll return to the 2015 Expo to see whatever they're ready to show us in two years. Or maybe they want us excited enough that we'll open our wallet and commit to spending our next several family vacations in Anaheim or Orlando.
They just apparently don't want us so excited that we speculate about these plans, read too much into official statements published too soon via Disney publications, or—heaven forbid—spend even a moment reading those dreaded “fan sites.” If we do, we might find ourselves the focus of a joke at the next D23 Expo.
But hey—they're only teasing.
Right?
Updated Fall 2013 Refurbishment schedule
There has been a great deal of chatter online about the Fall 2013 attraction refurbishment schedule, with rumors of as-yet-unannounced refurbishment for Radiator Springs Racers, and extentions of already-scheduled projects on Big Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain. Those particular rumors have yet to be confirmed by Disney, but there have been some updates to the refurbishment schedule published for cast member reference.
Rumor has it that the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment might run longer than originally planned, but Disney has yet to make any announcement. Meanwhile, Big Thunder Trail is still closed due to the costruction, with access to the ranch available through Fantasyland. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
It's interesting to note that Captain EO is not listed on the internal refurbishment schedule, but is listed on Disneyland.com as being closed starting September 11, and continuing at least through September 27, the last day for which detailed information has been posted.
We've also noticed that the Main Street Cone Shop quietly ceased operation earlier this summer. The location is not listed on any refurbishment list available to the public, but all signs were removed from the former ice cream window, and it no longer appears on the Disneyland.com website. Cast members at the nearby fruit cart said this is a permanent closure.

We update the refurbishment schedule every week in the Disneyland Resort Update, so keep watching for changes as we get more information. For now, here are the new confirmed refurbishments. The full schedule is available below in our Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures list.

Starbucks to open two new Disneyland Resort locations
If the line at the Starbucks outlet in Disney California Adventure is too long for you, cheer up—Disney will soon offer three new Starbucks locations to satisfy your coffee cravings. Disney has already announced that Disneyland will house a Starbucks in the former Market House location on Main Street, U.S.A., but last week, the company announced the addition of two new locations in Downtown Disney this winter.
Disney said the first location will be “in front of the west entrance to World of Disney,” and we suspect they're moving into the space very recently vacated by BLINK, the pop-up concept store opened by Wet Seal in 2011. BLINK moved out with very little fanfare earlier this month, and a construction wall is already up around the building.
BLINK has closed in Downtown Disney, and is the presumed location of one of two new Starbucks announced for Downtown Disney Anaheim. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Interestingly enough, when the Anne Geddes store closed in early 2011, I was told by a very trusted source that they had seen plans to turn that location into a Starbucks. They had some pretty detailed information, so it was a surprise to me when BLINK opened there instead. It looks like maybe BLINK was only there until Starbucks was ready to move on that space.
The second location is described as “a kiosk location” elsewhere in Downtown Disney. The former Compass Books kiosk was demolished when Earl of Sandwich moved in, but there’s plenty of room near the ESPN Zone add a stand-alone kiosk.
We note that the Disney Pin Traders location is set to close today (August 19) for refurbishment, but cast members there say the store is not slated to become the new Starbucks. Instead, that location is getting a much-needed renovation, including a new awning and expanded sales area.
Last week's announcement also included the information that the Market House Starbucks will open in September. A peek into the construction zoen Saturday night showed that the interior drywall work looks near completion, but there were no fixtures or furnishings visible.
Mara gets a facelift
A new effect was added to the Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland during a recent refurbishment, and Disney unveiled the enhancement last week. The change affects the first scenes of the ride, as the vehicle enters the Chamber of Destiny and proceeds through the Hall of Promise. The ride now features a new dialogue track for Mara, and a new projected effect on the face of Mara at the end of the Hall of Promise.
Disney's announcement about the change was very brief, saying only “New Curse Unleashed on Indiana Jones Adventure Youll never look at Mara the same way again!” This is not a Limited Time Mara promotion – responding to comments on the Disney Parks Blog, Social Media Manager Erin Glover said, “I think this curse will be around for a long time…”

Imagineers testing a new game on Mickey's Fun Wheel
During the D23 Expo, we got a look at a new Imagineering project involving Mickey's Fun Wheel in Disney California Adventure. Walt Disney Imagineering has created a Simon-like pattern-matching game using Mickey's Fun Wheel as a giant game board. Players use their own smartphones as the controller, connecting via an in-park wireless network created especially for the game.
The game lasts several rounds, with the pattern to be matched growing longer and more complicated with each round. Players earn points for correctly matching the pattern, with bonus points awarded for speed. The winner gets to control the light show displayed on Mickey's Fun Wheel between rounds, while the other players compete to guess the pattern the winner has chosen.
The author uses her smartphone to play a color matching game using Mickey's Fun Wheel as the board. Photo by Tony Phoenix.
From what I saw in the limited preview I played, this is exactly the way I think technology should be used in the parks. This game takes something that is already in the park—in this case, Mickey's Fun Wheel—and lets visitors interact with it in a new way that does not distract from the overall theme or “show.” People who aren't playing can still enjoy the display of colors and patterns on Mickey's Fun Wheel, and remain completely unaware of the game.
For the folks who walk around glued to their smartphone, this actually encourages them to look up from the screen and reengage with their environment, and possibly even get to control the “show” for a moment. Rather than passing the time waiting for World of Color to start by reading Facebook or playing Angry Birds, players can use their phones in a way that fosters interaction with their companions, even if it's just to see who can get the highest score.
We have no word on when this might be launched for full-time use, or if similar initiatives are planned elsewhere in the park, but I can't wait to see how the Imagineers leverage this idea to other shows and experiences.
2013 Happiest Haunts Tour details
We have dates and details of the 2013 Happiest Haunts Tour, including new discounts offered for The Ultimate Experience package.
The “Ghost Relations” tour guides are back again to lead you on the Happiest Haunts tour of the Disneyland Resort. The tour visits spooks sites in Disney California Adventure and Disneyland, and includes selected rides. Contributing writer Annemarie Moody took the tour in 2010, and shared her experience in her MousePlanet review.
The tour is $75 per person for all ages. Deluxe, Premium and Premiere Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members, Disney VISA and AAA cardholders save 20 percent. Cast members save 35 percent on select dates only; check with Cast Activities for details.
While the tour is offered daily between September 13 and October 31, you'll need to book an Ultimate Experience package if you plan to tour on a night when Mickey's Halloween Party is scheduled.
The Ultimate Experience is $140 per person ($145 on October 30 and 31), and includes the Disney’s Happiest Haunts Tour and admission to Mickey’s Halloween Party after the tour, plus a private meet-and-greet with a Disney Villain. New for 2013, a 20 percent discount is available to Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members, and Disney VISA and AAA cardholders on all nights except October 30 and 31. This addresses the issue from past years where the lack of discount made the Ultimate Experience more expensive than purchasing the tour and event ticket a la carte using the available discounts, something Disney would not allow.
You can make reservations for Disney's Happiest Haunts 30 days in advance by calling the Guided Tour office at (714) 781-4400, or in person at Disneyland. Foreign language or sign language interpretation is available with advance notice.

Final hours to bid on Rocks for CHOC
MousePlanet is proud to support Children's Hospital Orange County, and we've partnered with CHOC for a unique FUNdraiser auction that ends today.
Just like the rocks in “A Bug's Life,” CHOC Rocks have a deeper meaning. The tradition started with a young woman named Timmaree, who began painting rocks to give to the doctors and nurses while she was being treated at CHOC. She also sold them at fundraisers, signing hundreds of rocks for dedicated collectors. Today, Team Timmaree Rocks is one of the largest teams in the annual CHOC Walk, and her friends and family continue to host rock painting events in her memory.
A collection of rocks hand-painted by well-known local artists and Disney illustrators will be offered in an auction to benefit Children's Hospital Orange County. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Beloved artists, including Shag, Chip Foose, Dave Avanzino, Kevin Kidney, Jody Daily, Joe Yakovetic, Stacia Martin, Jeff Granito and Katie Kelly have each hand-painted a CHOC Rock, and MousePlanet is proud to offer them at auction via eBay's Giving Works program. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these auctions will go directly to Children's Hospital Orange County.
For details on each rock and to bid on them on eBay, see our auction page now. The auctions end in 5-minute intervals between noon and 1:00 p.m. (Pacific time) today, Monday August 19.

Question of the Week
Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.
This week, MousePad member DisneyMomandJack has a question about Disneyland's version of the Pirate's League, expected to return for Halloween 2013.
Is the Pirate League worth doing for my 5-year-old son?
Did your child experience Pirate's League at Disneyland last year? Were you happy with the experience, and would you recommend it to other families? Please share your comments on our MousePad discussion forum,. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency. | ||

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
The current purchase with purchase offers at the Disneyland Resort include a towel, tote bag and watch. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Pheonix. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for US Military |
2012–2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets are blocked out through July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
