Titles defended; records shattered at 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon
80-degree temperatures and sweltering humidity marked the 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend, which drew an estimated 25,000 runners to compete in two timed event and a series of family-friendly “fun runs.”
Jimmy Grabow from Running Springs, Colorado, defended his title by winning the Disneyland Half Marathon for the second year in a row. Grabow completed the 13.1-mile course in 1:07:41. Although slightly more than 2 minutes over his record-setting 2012 run of 1:05:29, it was still an incredible performance considering the weather conditions.
Stephanie Dinius of Palo Alto, California, took first place and set a new course record in the women's division with a time of 1:15:47, nearly 9 minutes faster than the 2012 winner. 2012 winner Cindy Lynch finished a distant second with a time of 1:25:29. Perhaps more remarkable, however, is the third-place winner; Sydney Tullai from Chino Hills, Calfornia, finished half a minute after Lynch with a finish time of 1:25:58—and is only 14 years old.
Kenneth Nwadike Jr. of Chula Vista, California won the inaugural Disneyland 10K with a time of 36:32. The women's division was won by Momoko Tanaka from Japan, with a time of 38:45.
Race results are available on the RunDisney website, so you can check your official time.
Among the celebrity participants were singer Joey Fatone, actor Sean Astin, and Biggest Loser's first female winner, Ali Vincent, as well as Biggest Loser host and Days of Our Lives cast member Allison Sweeney. Six MousePlanet staff members also participated, with our own Lani Teshima claiming 11th place in her age division for the half marathon.
Congratulations to all of the runners and walkers who completed the race, and a special thanks to the volunteers at the Team MousePlanet cheering section who were at mile 6.5 with over 100 pounds of sliced oranges, icy-cold sponges, and loads of encouragement. We also want to thank those volunteers who made almost 50 personalized signs for MousePlanet readers—you can see all of the signs on our MousePad discussion forum.

The launch of a new race and addition of thousands of extra runners resulted in some noticeable growing pains at the pre-race Expo, and before the start of the 10K and half marathon events. In past events, the only people who absolutely had to check in on Friday were those participating in the 5K or runDisney Kids races; the half marathon participants could check in either Friday or Saturday.
By scheduling the new 10K race on Saturday without extending the Expo another day, runDisney forced more than 8,000 people to check in on Friday, and the Expo was seemingly not prepared for those added crowds. The line just to pick up race bibs was as long as 45 minutes at points on Friday, after which participants had to stand in another, sometimes longer line just to get into the Expo and claim their race shirts.

The official runDisney merchandise booth was so busy that the area was closed for over an hour Friday afternoon because of the overcrowding, and lines to check out were reportedly as long as three hours. One participant described the scene as “worse than Walmart on black Friday.”
Some readers reported a few glitches with the new race. When MousePlanet's Jeff Moxley went to line up in his assigned corral prior to the 10K start Saturday morning, he discovered that there was no corral G, despite the letter printed on his race bib (corral G was available for the half-marathon, and Dumbo Double Dare participants were given a single bib to race in both the 10K and half-marathon). Another reader who was also assigned to corral G said Disney cast members seemed to no have idea what to do with the hundreds of runners looking for a corral that didn't exist, and told her just to squeeze into any corral with room.

Several readers noted that Disney seemed ill-prepared for the extreme temperatures, running out of cups at one water station along the 10K course, and running out of electrolyte beverage at several aid stations along the half marathon course.
Our Lani Teshima is writing a recap of the event, and wants to know what you thought of the Expo and the overall event. Drop her a note at lani@mouseplanet.com, or post a comment to this article.
If you earned a medal this Sunday, come share your photos and race reports on our MousePad discussion forum or Facebook page. Rumor roundup: a refurbishment for Racers, the end of EO and Club 33's makeover
There have been a number of rumors floating around online about various happenings at the Disneyland Resort, so here's what we're hearing:
- Radiator Springs Racers – a brief refurbishment at Disney California Adventure is scheduled to take place Monday through Thursday, November 4–7. This has not yet appeared on the official Disneyland refurbishment list, and could change at any time.
- Captain EO and the Magic Eye Theater – The official Disneyland refurbishment list shows these as closed September 11 through November 20. A Disneyland cast member tells us that managers in her department said the attraction will actually close permanently on September 9. Disney has not made any announcements to indicate that the Captain EO closure is any more than a refurbishment, but we should note that the Walt Disney World version of the attraction is scheduled to close next January.
- Club 33 – as David Koening wrote last month, Disneyland's private club will be renovated and expanded in a project that is expected to take several months. While Club 33 management has not officially notified members of the plans or time line, January 6, 2014 seems to be the starting date.
Annual Passholder nights at Disney California Adventure
Disney is hosting a two Annual Passholder nights at Disney California Adventure, Thursday September 5 and Thursday, September 19.
Each event offers access to “select Disney California Adventure Park attractions, merchandise and dining locations,” from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., three hours after DCA closes for the night. Registered guests will also receive a “special gift” celebrating the release of the The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition on October 1.
There is no advance registration for this event. Passholders must register in person starting at Noon the day of each event, and Disney recommends that all passholders in a party register together to ensure everyone receives a wristband. All guests ages 3 and older must have a valid annual pass.
For full details, visit the event website.

This and that…
…Now through September 8, the Walt Disney Travel Co. office in Downtown Disney is temporarily relocated to the Amazon Room in the Adventure Tower of the Disneyland Hotel. On September 9, they reopen in the former Travelex office in Downtown Disney. An internal Disney document says the relocation is due to the “Earl of Sandwich expansion.” Our guess is that the popular eatery is expanding their tiny indoor seating area and not making any changes to their kitchen, but we'll have to wait and see what happens.
…Dancin' with Disney, the often-overlooked character dance party held in Disney California Adventure, has permanently closed as of September 2.
…You may be wondering about the extra-early closures of Disneyland this week and next. We've been told the park is closing early on these days—as early as 5 p.m. on September 12—for the annual cast member recognition events.
…MousePlanet is now on Instagram; follow us at instagram.com/mouseplanet.
…After announcing a “new curse” on the Indiana Jones attraction two weeks ago, Disney has quietly replaced the new voice of Mara with another recording. SoCal Theme Parks 360 posted a video of the newer effect on their YouTube channel. We'll leave it to the reader to decide if this is a restoration of the original narration as some claim, or an entirely new recording as others insist.
The “new curse” on Indiana Jones has updated again with another recording of Mara. YouTube video.
Question of the Week
Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.
This week, MousePad member Yellowrosedtxn is looking for help with planning an end of the year trip for a high school band from Texas.
What I am asking your help with is a beach to take everyone too. Mostly I think they are not going to want to be in the water much as the water is a lot colder than in the Gulf of Mexico, but what do I know? The kids surprise me all the time. And the second is, what would be a good hotel that is kind of in between Disneyland and Universal Studios?
Do you have experience with large group trips to Southern California? Any ideas for a beach within easy driving distance of Buena Park? Please share your comments on our MousePad discussion forum,. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

- Muppet Vision 3D – “partially closed” September 9–12 for refurbishment. We're not sure how one “partially closes” a theater. - Toy Story Midway Mania – closed September 16–19 for refurbishment.
- Disney Animation Building – partial closures September 30 through November 12 for maintenance. (Extended two weeks)
- Flik's Flyers – closed October 21 – November 14 for refurbishment.

Team MousePlanet is back for our 6th year, and we welcome new members – visit the CHOC website to join us! You can also visit our MousePad discussion forum for more information about the walk and our team.
Winter
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
- World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
- Candlelight Processional – December 7 and 8 [unconfirmed]
2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency. | ||

For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
