Club 33 members officially notified of upcoming renovation project
In a letter dated September 2, 2013, Disneyland Resort President Michael Colglazier officially confirmed to Club 33 members that the historic private club will close on January 6 for a “much-anticipated expansion.” The last day of service in the current dining room is January 5, 2014, and the club is expected to open sometime in Summer 2014.
The brief letter states that Imagineer Kim Irvine will lead the renovation, “working from Walt's original vision for the Club, and building on the artistic foundations laid by such Disney Legends as Dorothea Redmond and Emile Kuri.” Irvine previously led the conversion of the Disney Gallery into the Dream Suite, also using designs from Redmond and Kuri.
Members will have the opportunity to see some of the changes planned for the club by visiting a members-only preview center which opens September 9. No photos are allowed in the preview center, but it likely won't take long for details of the renovations to spread online.

The club is also hosting members-only events starting with an evening with Kim Irvine, who will explain some of the changes coming to the club, and continuing with “design updates, tastings, menu concept presentations and other special events designed especially with you in mind.”
The letter wraps up with some details about how Club 33 members will be accommodated during this expansion and the closure of the club itself. The Hollywood Room in the Carthay Circle Restaurant will become the Club 33 “home away from home” during the expansion, offering “unique touches to enhance Club 33 Members' culinary experiences.” Not stated was whether the chefs or servers from Club 33 will relocate to Carthay Circle during the renovation, or if any of the Club's signature dishes or desserts will be available.
With the club closed, Disney is offering alternate locations for private events members would normally host at the club. I expect the private dining rooms at Napa Rose to see a lot of extra business during the renovation.
Club members can roll over their unused 2013 admission tickets and VIP tours (if applicable) for use before June 1, 2014. The letter stated that due to the aggressive timeline of the renovation, there is no increase to the annual dues for 2014.
While Club 33 members wait to learn more about the changes to the dining room, many Disneyland fans made a point of visiting the Court des Anges in New Orleans Square to take a few last photographs before the secluded courtyard closes as part of the expansion project in late September.

Halloween Time Treats, and a T Party refresh
Disneyland released a list of the treats planned for the Friday the 13th, but the trick is that the article says they'll only be available that one night as part of the Limited Time Magic promotion. We can't speak for all of the items, but cast members at Cafe Orleans and the Mint Julep Bar have confirmed that at least the pumpkin beignets will be available throughout the Halloween Time promotion.

This is good news for those who just can't visit the park of Friday the 13th, and the addition of a second serving location is a real treat for those (this writer included) who love the seasonal beignets, but don't want to deal with making Cafe Orleans reservations just to get an order of the Mickey-shaped treats. Of course, this is only going to make the lines at the Mint Julep Bar even more unmanageable, so maybe table-service dessert is the way to go. Cast members also confirmed that the Mint Julep bar will offer the gingerbread beignets during the holiday season. No word on when the Mint Julep Bar will install a Fastpass machine.

The Mad T Party also debuts a new look on Friday the 13th, with a Halloween overlay that the Disney Parks Blog says is “filled with more Halloween muchness than one can imagine, from a chilling new look for the Mad T Party Band to a monster mash-up for the Hottest Deck in Town.” The Halloween Mad T Party will be hosted every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night in October.
Comings and goings
Checking on some changes at the Disneyland Resort.
- Market House Starbucks – Disney has announced that the Main Street Starbucks location will open September 25. Signs are now up around the former BLINK store in Downtown Disney, announcing that Starbucks will open there in Winter 2013.

Starbucks La Boulange – A reader asked if the Starbucks in Disney California Adventure had introduced the new La Boulange bakery menu that other Starbucks locations are rolling out. I checked with the DCA location, and they said they have no plans to introduce the La Boulange menu, which features baked goods warmed in the stores. According to a cast member, the DCA location doesn't have the right ovens for the La Boulange products. The CM also said the Disneyland location is unlikely to offer the line, but the new Downtown Disney location may when it opens later this year, since it's a stand-alone Starbucks outlet and not part of another Disney eatery.

Captain EO and the Magic Eye Theater – It looks like Captain EO fans have a little more time to see the tribute show. Tomorrowland cast members were told the scheduled closure of the show has been postponed “indefinitely,” though the official refurbishment calendar still shows the Magic Eye Theater closing on September 11.
- Downtown Disney crepe and funnel cake cart – Another Downtown Disney kiosk has closed, though we don't know if they are relocating elsewhere along the strip or have closed for good.

- The Travelex office in Downtown Disney has closed, and the space is the new home of the Walt Disney Travel Co. office. The Earl of Sandwich is expected to begin work on an expansion into the old Travel Co. space this week.
Passholders invited to contribute artwork for World of Color – Winter Dreams
If you're a Disneyland Resort annual passholder with an artistic streak, you could be part of the new World of Color – Winter Dreams show. Disney is seeking greeting card submissions from passholders to be used in a segment of the upcoming holiday edition of World of Color.
If this sounds familiar, you're probably thinking of LuminAria, the one-season-only holiday show that debuted the year Disney California Adventure opened, and was never seen again. That show, also from the mind of World of Color creator Steven Davison, incorporated drawings colored that day by DCA visitors. World of Color has already proven to be a worthy replacement for LuminAria, and we're intrigued to see how Davison will use the fan-supplied art in this new show.
To enter, create a 4″ x 6″, single-sided greeting card depicting “what you think the winter holidays bring.” The contest rules encourage artists to “Be creative! Be expressive! Be you!”—but please don't include photos, clip art, copyrighted materials, family names or 3-dimensional elements (for full details, requirements and rules, visit the event website).

This is not a contest, and there are no prizes. There is no indication how many cards will be selected, or how or if Disney will contact those whose cards they select. Cards must be received by September 20, and you can either mail your submission to the address on the waiver, or drop it off in person at the World of Disney store.
New tastes at Rancho del Zocalo
Disneyland's Rancho del Zocalo recently expanded its menu with two new offerings: Chicken en Mole, and the Guadalajara Burrito. Both are a twist on existing menu items, but offer a welcome option to the popular restaurant's menu.
The Chicken en Mole ($13.49) takes the same citrus-marinated half-chicken from the current entree, and adds a mole sauce with sour cream drizzle. The chicken is served with rice and beans, and comes with a side of two taco-sized flour tortillas.

We tasted the new dish this weekend, and found the mole sauce to be spicy but balanced—don't let the “peanut and chocolate” description throw you off; this is not a sweet sauce. If you grew up in a household where mole was made using a molcajete and simmered for 20 hours, you'll probably find a dozen reasons why your families traditional recipe is better than this one—but anyone who likes a little heat in their Mexican-inspired food should give this a try.

The Burrito Guadalajara ($10.99) basically just adds carnitas (pork) as a new protein option for the existing burrito entree. The meat is wrapped in a flour tortilla with rice, beans and cheese, and topped with a tomatillo sauce instead of the guajillo chili sauce used on the Burrito Sonora. The burrito is served with more rice and beans on the side.
Along with this new burrito offering, carnitas are now available in the Soft Tacos Monterey ($10.99) entree.

…Mickey's Halloween Party is now sold out for Friday, October 4, 2013. We recommend purchasing your tickets as soon as you decide on a date to avoid having the event you wanted to attend sell out before you buy your tickets.
…David Koenig reports that Marvel’s “God of Thunder” and his home planet of Asgard will take over the current site of the St. Joseph Hospital display, not so coincidentally located next to the Iron Man 3 “Hall of Armor.” No opening date has been set yet, but expect an unveiling in October, as a lead up to the Friday, November 8 premiere of the new movie Thor: The Dark World.

This may just be a refurbishment of the lobby area, but prepare yourself for the whole attraction to be closed, and then you can be pleasantly surprised if the theater is open.
- Toy Story Midway Mania – closed September 16–19 for refurbishment.
- Disney Animation Building – partial closures September 30 through November 12 for maintenance. (Extended two weeks)
- Flik's Flyers – closed October 21 – November 14 for refurbishment.
- Radiator Springs Racers – (unconfirmed) closed November 4–7 for refurbishment.

The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 14, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. 2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Discounts for US Military |
2012–2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets are blocked out through July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
