Mickey's Halloween Party
Last Friday was the first of the 2013 Mickey's Halloween party events, and a friendly cast member reader shared some information that will be helpful to readers planning their visits. While we've posted all of the details on our MousePad discussion forum, including the full entertainment schedule, character meet-and-greet locations, and a list of all attractions, shops, and restaurants open during the events, here are a few highlights of the changes for 2013:
Toontown Treat Pre-Party
There's a new Toontown Treat Pre-Party from 6:00–8:00 p.m. on Friday night events, and 5:00–7:00 p.m. for all other events. The pre-party features early trick-or-treating for event guests and character meet-and-greets with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, Donald, Chip, Dale, Clarabelle Cow, and Roger Rabbit.
Toontown will close to non-event guests two hours before scheduled park closing to clear the area, and will reopen at the times listed. Toontown will then close for the night after the pre-party.
Entertainment
New this year is the Monsters U Dance Party at the Tomorrowland Terrace featuring a monster scare-off with Mike and Sulley at 7:45, 8:45, 9:45 and 10:45 each night.
Also new this year, Glow with the Show Ear hats will interact with the Halloween Screams fireworks show.
Trick or Treating
There are 10 trick-or-treat locations/trails this year. New for this year, each one will offer gluten- and sugar-free treats, but only at the first stop along each trail (the one built to look like a door).
Note: The October 11 event is now sold out (along with the October 4 event). Be sure to purchase your tickets as soon as you pick a date to avoid disappointment.

Disneyland opens online dining reservations
Walt Disney World regulars are often surprised to learn that the Disneyland Resort does not offer online dining reservations, something visitors to the Florida resort has enjoyed since 2009. Well, Disneyland is finally catching up, and will offer online reservations for table service restaurants starting Thursday, October 3.
The new website allows visitors to make reservations 60 days in advance for table service restaurants throughout the Disneyland Resort, including both theme parks, the three Disney-owned hotels, and most of the Downtown Disney restaurants. [At press time, cast members could not confirm whether the Rainforest Cafe will be added to the system; currently Disney does not make reservations for the location.]
With this new system comes a new credit card guarantee policy. We reported in April that Disneyland would adopt the Walt Disney World policy, which requires that a credit card number be provided when making a reservation. Disneyland later announced that the planned implementation had been postponed.
Starting October 3, all new or rescheduled dining reservations will require a credit card. A $10 per person cancelation fee in the event of a no-show, or if the reservation is canceled with less than 24 hours notice.
16th Annual Gay Days October 4–6
The 16th Annual Gay Days event is scheduled for October 4 through 6 at the Disneyland Resort, and a memo issued to cast members indicates the Resort is bracing for large crowds during the unofficial event.
On Sunday, October 6, the Katella parking lot usually reserved for cast members will be utilized to handle overflow guest parking from the adjacent Toy Story parking lot. Cast members who normally park at that lot will instead park at Anaheim Stadium and use a shuttle to get to the Resort.
The three days of events include in-park gatherings, special events at Downtown Disney restaurants and at the Disneyland Resort hotels, and appearances by celebrities including, actress Susan Egan (Megara in Hercules, and Belle in the original Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast), Glee stars Alex Newell and Dot Marie Jones, and television personality Tabatha Coffey.
Most of the in-park activities are scheduled inside Disneyland park on Saturday, and inside Disney California Adventure park on Sunday. View the full schedule of events and purchase tickets on the event website.
Though Gay Days is not officially sponsored by the Walt Disney Company, you'll find signs of Disney's involvement, including special menu items created for the event at restaurants in both parks, and a special World of Color dining package at the Carthay Circle restaurant in DCA.
Crofton addresses changes to Disney's guest assistance policy
I wrote last week that Disney, in an effort to curb abuse, is revising its current Guest Assistance Card (GAC) policy. Though Disney cast members themselves are just now going through training on the new program, and though Disney has not provided specific details to the public, news of the pending change has sparked coverage from media outlets around the world, with headlines from the straightforward “Disney tightens up resort disability program” (CNN) to the sensational, “Disney World's Message to the Disabled: Wait in Line” (Yahoo news).
And although Disney worked with the advocacy group Autism Speaks to help develop the new guidelines, the Autism Society of Los Angeles issued a statement saying in part, “The change will turn ‘The Happiest Place on Earth’ into a nightmare for many families with children with autism.”
The publicity prompted Meg Crofton, President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, to release an official statement regarding the pending changes to Disney's assistance policy. She writes:
Dear Friends,
Disney Parks holds a cherished place in the hearts of the millions of Guests who visit us each year. We know that is especially true for those of you who have a loved one with a disability. For many families, what would be impossible elsewhere is not only possible, but magical, at our parks and resorts. We are proud to play such an important role in so many of your lives.
Unfortunately, our current program for providing access to attractions for Guests with disabilities has been abused and exploited to such an extent that we are no longer able to effectively sustain it in its present form. After careful consideration, and with the needs of our Guests with disabilities as our foremost concern, we are modifying the current program so that we will be able to continue to serve those Guests for whom the program is intended.
Over the past few days, you have likely heard about these upcoming changes and how they might affect our Guests with disabilities. Our relationship with you is important to us, and we want to take the opportunity to clear up any confusion or misinterpretation.
Our commitment to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our Guests has not changed. We have long recognized that people may have different needs, and we will continue to work individually with our Guests with disabilities to provide assistance that is response to their unique circumstances.
As with any changes, there will be a period of adjustment, particularly for those families who have developed and refined their preferred ways of enjoying our parks with their loved ones over the years. I thank you in advance for your patience as we fine-tune our new program to mitigate the current abuse, while still providing the special experience our Guests have come to expect from Disney.
Most of all, thank you for entrusting your treasured time with those you love to Disney Parks.
Sincerely,
Meg Crofton
President, Walt Disney Parks and Resort Operations, U.S. and France
A spokesman for the Autism Society of Los Angeles tells MousePlanet that a Disneyland executive contacted them after the group issued its press release, and the group hopes the policy will be changed before it is implemented in October. We continue to monitor this situation, and will provide updates as we have additional information.
Clark departs Disney D23
We learned last week that Steven Clark has left the Disney company and his role as the head of D23, billed as the official Disney fan club, to “pursue new opportunities.”
The departure comes as D23 embarks on an ambitious schedule of events this fall, including the opening of the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the first international D23 Expo in Japan, a series of Member Mixers at Disney Stores across the country, and the return of several popular holiday events.
Though a replacement has not yet been named, a source tells MousePlanet that it's business as usual at D23, including planning for the 2015 D23 Expo in Anaheim. “We still have the full support of the executive leadership,” who recognize the “value in the membership and the brand.”
Congratulations MouseAdventure teams!

This and that…
…David Koenig wrote last month about the changes coming to New Orleans Square as part of the Club 33 renovation, including the pending closure of the Court of Angels, saying “the last day for the Court of Angels as we know it is September 28.” Fans turned out Saturday night to say a final farewell to the little-known corner of New Orleans Square, so imagine the surprise Sunday morning when the area opened as usual.
We're now hearing that the final day for the Court of Angels is next Sunday, October 6, so you have one more week to get those last photos before the construction walls move in.
…Just a note that Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) is scheduled for October 17 & 18 (link). Visitors planning trips October 17–21 should expect unusually large attendance levels as Utah students and families take advantage of a four-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
…Disney has not made any kind of announcement about the delay in the Big Thunder Mountain refurbishment, but the ride is listed as closed for refurbishment through November 10, the last day for which detailed information was available via Disneyland's online calendar.
…Our Canadian readers often grumble that they can't enter many of the contests we share on this site, but here's one exclusively for residents of Canada. The Toys “R” Us Make a Dream Come True sweepstakes offers a grand prize of a Disneyland or Walt Disney World vacation. Visit the contest website to enter by October 11, 2013.
…Glee star and New York Times bestselling author Chris Colfer will be at the World of Disney store on Saturday, October 12 to sign copies of The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns, sequel to The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell. Copies of both books will be offered for sale at the event. As this is expected to be a very popular signing, we recommend that readers keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for specifics about where and when to form the pre-event line.
…Last week I wrote about the change to the Club 33 lunch offering, and incorrectly gave the end date for the current offering as October 7. The last date is actually October 6, and the new service begins October 7. MousePad member AnotherJenny sent me the following information received from Club 33 about the new lunch:
“Beginning on October 7, an enhanced lunch menu will replace the existing buffet service. Starting with a seafood selection presented to each table, your dining experience will feature a choice of an appetizer and entrée from the menu, and finish with a selection of traditional and contemporary desserts presented in a buffet fashion. Thoughtfully designed by Chef Marcel and his team, this lunch offering maintains many of your favorite menu selections, including pan roasted chateaubriand. We are delighted to offer this new lunch service at $65.00, per person exclusive of beverages, tax and gratuity.”
Club 33 members I've spoken with are generally positive about the change, which comes as the private membership embarks on a massive renovation that will see the main dining room closed for about six months. One member said that she feels the current lunch service is too pricey, and thinks members and their guests will jump at the chance to dine at a lower price.
…Disney Legend and Imagineering Ambassador Marty Sklar is making a personal appearance at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m. The event is free for all, but D23 Gold and Silver members can receive reserved preferred seating. To register for the event, reserve tickets through the Skirball Center website. Starting October 2, D23 Gold and Silver members can then request reserved seating via a link to be posted on the D23 event website. Copies of Sklar's new book Dream It! Do It! will be for sale at the event ($24.99), and Sklar will sign copies after the presentation.
Question of the Week
Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.
This week, long-time MousePad member Martini Mom asks about the in-room decorating service offered by the Disneyland Resort Hotels.
Just wondering if anyone has paid to have a room decorated to celebrate a birthday. We will be celebrating our daughters 16th birthday at the Disneyland Hotel on Nov. 24. I thought it would be fun to have the room decorated to surprise her. The price seems pretty steep, $200. It would be worth it to me if it is really fabulous… but if most of the $200 is for their time to hang a banner and put up a few balloons, then maybe not. Anyone have experience with this??
Have you purchased this package? Please share your comments on our MousePad discussion forum,. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

2013
Fall
- Halloween Time – through October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party – October 1, 4 (sold out), 8, 11 (sold out), 15, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 30, and 31. Tickets are now on sale. Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and Disney Visa cardholders can get discounts on select nights.

You can also visit our MousePad discussion forum for more information about the walk and our team.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 17 & 18 (link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
Winter
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
- World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
- Candlelight Processional – (unconfirmed) December 7 and 8
2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency. | ||

Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for US Military |
2012–2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets are blocked out through July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
