Disney releases details of new guest assistance policy
With the new Disability Access Service (DAS) program scheduled to begin this Wednesday at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World, Disney has taken an additional step to help combat some of the negative publicity surrounding this change. In addition to the statement issued last week by Meg Crofton, President of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, the company posted an update about the program via the Disney Parks Blog, along with a Fact Sheet for guests who are planning trips during and after the transition.
I wrote last week that the Autism Society of Los Angeles issued a statement asking Disney to reconsider the rumored changes, concerned that the new program would not adequately address the needs of visitors with non-visible disabilities. Society spokeswoman Judy Mark said she was contacted by several Disney executives following the organization's statement, and was asked to share this letter—outlining a few additional pieces of information about alternate accommodations for guests with cognitive disabilities that are not included in any other official Disney communication we've seen—with its members:
Disney Parks have an unwavering commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment and accessible experiences for guests.
On October 9, the process that provides access to attractions for guests with disabilities, known as the Guest Assistance Card, will be replaced with the new Disability Access Service (DAS) Card. Guests will request the new card at Guest Relations and DAS Cardholders will receive a return time for attractions based on the current wait time. The DAS Card is designed to provide the special experience guests have come to expect from Disney. It will also help control abuse that was, unfortunately, growing at an alarming rate.

We believe that the DAS card, with its virtual wait, will accommodate many of our guests with disabilities.
However, we also recognize that our guests with disabilities have varying needs, and we will continue to work individually with them to provide assistance that is responsive to their unique circumstances.
While each situation will be handled individually at Guest Relations, following are two examples of accommodations that could be offered based on a guests needs:
- For a guest whose disability enables them to be in the park for only a limited time, the guest might be offered an accommodation that enables them to use the DAS Card in conjunction with access to a number of attractions without having to obtain a return time.
- Another potential accommodation, based on a guests unique needs, might include providing access to a favorite attraction multiple times in a row without having to obtain a return time.

In addition to the information officially provided by Disney, a Walt Disney World cast member posted information given to employees at the Florida resort during their training, including details about the DAS card itself. While this is not to be considered official or even final, I've confirmed that the information is generally consistent with the training Disneyland Resort cast members have received, though there will be some changes in California due to operational differences between the resorts.
There is another major change to the information published, in that Disney will allow “another member of the DAS cardholder’s travel party” to visit the attraction (WDW) or kiosk (DLR) to obtain the return time, rather than requiring the DAS cardholder to do so. DAS cardholders are still required to ride with their party in order to use the pass, but this change addresses a major concern voiced by parents of autistic children, who worried that making their child go to the desired attraction but making them wait to ride it could trigger a meltdown.
As with any major policy change, there will be an adjustment phase as both cast members and visitors become familiar with the new policy. Though I know from personal experience that this situation has the potential to be very frustrating for visitors, I urge everyone to remain calm and polite when dealing with front-line cast members. They did not write the policy, and cannot change it. If you have concerns about the new program or need additional assistance, Guest Relations in every park is the best place to go.
I will be visiting Disneyland on Wednesday with families representing the Autism Society of Los Angeles, and plan to have more information about the policy and practice of the DAS program in next Monday's park update. I also encourage you to contact me by e-mail with any questions you may have about the policy, and I'll do my best to get answers for you.

Online dining reservations open; Thanksgiving Buffet details available
It took a few hours longer than expected for the site to launch, but visitors can now book reservations online for table service restaurants at the Disneyland Resort.
The new website allows visitors to make reservations 60 days in advance for table service restaurants throughout the Disneyland Resort, including both theme parks, the three Disney-owned hotels, and most of the Downtown Disney restaurants, including the Rainforest Cafe.
The website also provides details of the 2013 Thanksgiving Buffet at the Disneyland Hotel on November 28. Reservations open October 8:

…All of the remaining Friday night Mickey's Halloween parties (October 11, 18, and 25) are now sold out, but MousePlanet Community Leader Malcon10t learned during her recent trip that guests staying at the three Disneyland Resort hotels may be able to purchase tickets to “sold out” night from the hotel front desks. Check with your hotel for availability during your trip.
…High winds this past weekend forced Disney to cancel the Halloween Screams fireworks during Mickey's Halloween Party Friday night. This disappointed visitors who purchased tickets to the after-hours party, but delighted guests who visited Saturday night. Because the Halloween fireworks were already loaded into the launchers, Disney presented the Halloween Screams show on Saturday night, rather than resetting for the scheduled “Remember… Dreams Come True” fireworks.
After introducing Halloween Screams in 2009 as the seasonal fireworks show, Disney made the popular show exclusive to the extra-cost Halloween Party in 2010, running the “normal” fireworks on non-party nights. However, savvy locals have learned that a cancellation of the Halloween fireworks on party nights means the show will usually run on the next night that fireworks are scheduled, and many took the opportunity to see the Halloween show Saturday night without needing to purchase an event ticket. Keep that in mind, and you might be fortunate enough to catch a bonus show the next time the Santa Ana winds pick up.

…With an estimated 30,000 people visiting the Disneyland Resort last weekend for Gay Days, Disney's chefs took the opportunity to test new menu items at several locations. The item that seemed to get the most buzz was a chicken-and-waffle sandwich at the Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country. The sandwich was dressed with arugula and Sriracha (Thai hot sauce) mayo and served with french fries.
In addition, Tomorrowland Terrace tested a new version of a turkey burger, Plaza Inn offered a spicy glazed salmon, and Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port offered a tri-colored pasta with spicy sausage marinara.

Although these items were only offered for two days, Disney will evaluate the response and may add some of the items to the regular menus in the future. Examples of items now available on the regular menu include the macaroni-and-cheese hot dog, tested last year during an Annual Passholder event that made it onto the menu at the Refreshment Corner, and the churro bites tested during the first One More Disney Day event, which are sold at the Cozy Cone in Disney California Adventure park.
…A belated note about some menu changes at the Hungry Bear restaurant in Disneyland. The funnel cake has returned to the menu: replacing the warm blueberry pie. Disney has also finally caved to customer demands and added regular french fries in addition to the sweet potato fries introduced when the park redesigned the menu in 2011.

…As you read this, construction walls may already be up around the Court des Anges in New Orleans Square. As has been discussed previously on MousePlanet, the sleepy courtyard will be incorporated into the new entry for Club 33. The adjacent L'Ornement Magique shop has already closed and will also be included in the project.
…The Orange County Register reports that the Anaheim Ducks hockey team will offer free shuttles between the Disneyland Resort and other Anaheim-area attractions (including Garden Walk and the Anaheim Convention Center) for Friday, Saturday and Sunday night games at the Honda Center. The Ducks Express will starting shuttle service 90 minutes before the start of a game, with return service starting at the beginning of the third period of the game. This is good news for Disneyland Resort passholders, who can park for free at the Mickey and Friends parking structure and take advantage of the shuttle to avoid the $15-$25 parking fees at the Honda Center.
…Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 9, with November 10 scheduled as a back-up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change without notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
…The Modesto Bee reports yet another arrest involving fake Disneyland tickets offered for sale on Craigslist. According to the article, the suspect sold Disneyland tickets that turned out to be invalid. A search of her home turned up “multiple printed Disneyland tickets.”
With Disney offering online purchasers the ability to print tickets at home from their own printer, there is no way to know if a paper ticket you purchase from someone else is valid for admission, or just one of dozens of copies they printed of the same ticket. To be safe, never purchase Disneyland tickets from anyone but an authorized reseller or the official Disneyland website.
…L.A. theater fans might want to check out “When You Wish: The Story of Walt Disney,” which starts previews at the Freud Playhouse at UCLA on October 9. The show is described as “a new musical about the life of the great Walt Disney. The show spans multiple decades as Roy Disney, Walt's older brother and business partner, narrates Walt's journey from a struggling dreamer to a household name.” Tickets are available from the show's website.
…Disney Imagineer Steve Davison, whose credits include Wishes, Haunted Mansion Holiday, and World of Color, is directing and producing a non-Disney project for the South Coast Chorale. “Matthew Shepard – Beyond The Fence,” opens Friday, October 11, at the Scottish Rite Theater in Long Beach, California. Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and Disney Visa cardholders can get discounts on select nights. If you are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, you may be able to purchase tickets to a “sold out” night from your hotel's front desk; check with your hotel for availability during your trip.
- 23rd Annual CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 13. The annual fundraiser for Children's Hospital Orange County takes place before park hours in Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The Magic Morning normally scheduled for Sunday at Disneyland will likely be rescheduled to Monday, October 14, and Disneyland will likely open at 9 a.m. to accommodate the event. - Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 17 & 18 (link). Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 9–10 (unconfirmed). - Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. The half-marathon and kids races are sold out, but registration is still open for the 5K and 10K.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
| Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. 2013 Southern California CityPASS ($319/$279) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by January 2, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. | Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club as of March 31, 2012. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). 2012–2013 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($125) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets may be purchased through September 26, 2013, and are valid through September 28, 2013. Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets are blocked out through July 4. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013-2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each.
