DCA celebrates Oktoberfest
Call it “Limited Time Lederhosen.” Disney California Adventure park kicked off its Oktoberfest celebration this weekend with a special menu at Bayside Brews. Offerings include:
- Bratwurst sausage (in a boursin-garlic brioche with hickory-smoked bacon sauerkraut, and potato chips or apple slices)
- Bavarian pretzel (with choice of mustard)
- Gingerbread bundt cake
- Karl Strauss Oktoberfest beer
- Hofbrau Munchen beer
Oktoberfest is celebrated through October 31 at Disney California Adventure.
Disney Magic's makover delayed; DCL cancels debut cruise
Quite a few MousePlanet followers are reading this update from their homes or hotel rooms today instead of from the decks of the Disney Magic as had been their plan, after Disney Cruise Line abruptly canceled the October 20 sailing with just four days notice.
The Disney Magic has just returned from Cadiz, Spain, where the ship underwent a massive six-week dry dock renovation. This overhaul was to have added a new water slide and water play area, renovated the dining rooms and children's activity spaces, and enhanced the staterooms and adult nightclubs. Disney planned to debut the newly “Pixie-dusted” Magic on the October 20 sailing, a five-night Bahamian cruise out of Miami, Florida, with stops in Nassau and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island.
As recently as 21 hours before the sudden announcement, Disney Cruise line was posting a countdown to the Magic's relaunch via its official Twitter feed. Passengers on the impacted cruise were notified Thursday morning, with many learning about it via social media and sites like MousePlanet before getting the call from Disney.
Disney Cruise Line did not respond to our request for comment, but USA Today reports that the delay was attributed to bad weather both at the shipyard in Spain and during the return voyage to the U.S. that delayed the renovations. Travel agents and impacted travelers have shared with MousePlanet the details of the compensation offered by Disney.
Passengers on the October 20 sailing will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, and Disney will reimburse fees charged by airlines to cancel or change flights. Passengers can also book a free cruise on the Disney Magic anytime before May 2014, and several readers said they were able to reschedule for the Halloween cruise the following week.
Passengers who cannot rebook before May 2014 or wish to sail on a different Disney ship receive a 35 percent discount on a cruise within the next 24 months.
New role for Napa Rose chef Andrew Sutton
We got word Friday afternoon, and Disney has confirmed, that Andrew Sutton has been named Executive Chef, Disneyland Resort Signature Restaurants. Sutton came to the Disneyland Resort in 2001 to open Napa Rose, and most recently was named executive chef for Napa Rose and Carthay Circle Restaurants as part of the DCA expansion project.
In his new role, Sutton will oversee Napa Rose, Carthay Circle, and Club 33. We're not sure exactly where current Club 33 Executive Chef Marcel St. Pierre or the Napa Rose and Carthay Circle sous chefs fit into the new organizational chart. We'll post an update as we get more information from Disney.
Disneyland removes in-park pin trading tables
According to a memo sent to cast members, Disneyland has officially removed the pin trading tables from Disneyland:
Disney Pin Trading continues to be a magical part of our Guest's experience. Over the years, Disney Pin Trading expanded from just a few tables to D23 Expos and special Pin Trading Nights designed to offer Guests the opportunity to gather, trade pins and share stories about their collections. In addition, Guests of all ages enjoy the interactions with our Cast that pin trading provides.
In an effort to be consistent across Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and as we continue our focus on Cast-to-Guest pin trading and larger pin trading events, beginning Oct. 7, the pin trading tables at Disneyland Park will be removed. We encourage Cast Members to continue pin trading with Guests as our events and opportunities evolve.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Is pin trading going away?
No, Disney Pin Trading continues to be a magical part of our Guest's experience. Guests still have many opportunities for pin trading with Cast Members and each other, including events like Pin Trading Nights.
Will you move the tables somewhere else?
No, tables will not be relocated. We encourage Guests to take advantage of other opportunities to trade such as Pin Trading Nights. Cast Members wearing lanyards also are happy to engage in pin trading with Guests.
What is the area being repurposed for?
The location will become a remote Guest Services location.
As we wrote this weekend, the former pin trading location outside Little Green Man Store Command has become the Guest Relations kiosk for the new Disability Access Service program, but the need for DAS space does not appear to be the reason for this change. The former pin trading area in Frontierland and the tables near the Downtown Disney pin trading store were each removed some time ago, and those areas are not now used for the DAS program. The Tomorrowland location was simply the last of the designated pin trading areas, and Disney's letter to cast members is a clear message that the tables won't return.
As noted in the Disney memo, guests are still welcome to trade with cast members wearing lanyards or carrying trading boards, and we've spotted the Mickey-shaped pin trading boards at some of the DAS/Guest Relations kiosks.
This and that…
…Club 33 members received notification last week that Disneyland's Candlelight Processional will be held Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8. Showtimes are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. both nights. Narrator(s) are not yet announced, and we have no additional information about viewing options for the general public.
…Tickets are still available for the October 30 Mickey's Halloween Party event, but all other nights are sold out.
…A quick refurbishment reminder: “it's a small world,” the Tiki Juice Bar and Flik's Flyers all close this week for scheduled maintenence.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Question of the Week
Each week, we share a question posted by a member of our MousePad discussion forum, and see if any of our other readers have advice or useful suggestions on that topic.
This week, MousePad member libbylovespluto, who is currently serving with the Peace Corps in South Africa, asks for transportation advice for making a day trip to Burbank during her next trip to Disneyland:
I'm hoping against hope that D23 offers an archives tour while we're at DL next year. If there is, we'll need a way to get to Burbank! Are there any shuttle companies that would take you there and back? If not, I'll have to get a car. When we get back from the Peace Corps, we're signing up for zipcar. There's a zipcar lot not terribly far on Chapman & North Center Street in Orange. Is this a safe place to go and fetch a car? What would be the easiest way to get over there?
Do you have any experience with using the Zipcar service in Anaheim, or other suggestions for transportation to and from Burbank? If so, please share your suggestions on our MousePad discussion forum. You can also post your own question to be included in a future Update.

Current Refurbishments and Attraction Closures
Note: Not all of attraction closures have been officially confirmed by Disney, and are all subject to change at any time. Refurbishment schedules are estimates only. We recommend checking for updates as you plan your visit. All information is subject to change without notice. To get the most recent updates, call Disneyland at (714) 781–7290, then select option 1, option 1 and option 4 at the next three prompts.
Disneyland
- Mad Tea Party (the ride, not the dance party) – closed October 14–24 for refurbishment.
- “it's a small world” – closed October 21 through November 7 for installation of the holiday overlay.
- Tiki Juice Bar – closed October 21 through November 14 for refurbishment.
- Dumbo Flying Elephants – closed October 28 through November 14 for refurbishment.
- Big Thunder Ranch Petting Farm – closed November 1–7 to convert from Halloween to holiday overlay.
- Space Mountain – closed November 4 to remove Halloween overlay.
- Casey Jr. Circus Train – closed December 2–12 due to the Storybook Land refurbishment.
- Storybook Land Canal Boats – closed December 2–12 for refurbishment.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed until “early 2014” for a major refurbishment. The ride was to have reopened October 30, 2013.
Disney California Adventure
- Flik's Flyers – closed October 21 through November 22 for refurbishment.
- Radiator Springs Racers – closed November 4–7 for refurbishment.
- Disney Animation Building – partial closures through November 12 for maintenance (extended two weeks).
- Tower of Terror – reduced capacity now through January 1, 2014. This usually means one of the rides three drop shafts is closed for refurbishment, and that the ride is running at 2/3 capacity.
Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2013
Fall
- Halloween Time – through October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party – October 15, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 30, and 31. All dates but October 30 are sold out. Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members, and Disney Visa cardholders can get discounts on select nights. If you are staying at one of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, you may be able to purchase tickets to a “sold out” night from your hotel's front desk; check with your hotel for availability during your trip.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 9–10 (unconfirmed). Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the filming date as November 9, with November 10 scheduled as a back up in case of rain or tape delay (link). Keep in mind that the filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – November 12 through the first week of 2014.
- World of Color Winter Dreams debut – Friday, November 15.
- Candlelight Processional – December 7 and 8. Showtimes are 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. both nights.
2014
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – January 16–19. All races are now sold out, but registration is still open for the Pasta in the Park party. Volunteer registration has not yet opened.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency. | ||

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
