Christmas week toolkit
Long-time readers and regular Disneyland visitors can be excused for jumping to the next item in this week's Update, but the time has come for our annual reminder about handling the holidays at Disneyland Resort. The next two weeks are traditionally the busiest time of the year at the Disneyland Resort, and we want you to be prepared as you face maximum-capacity crowds.

Most importantly, we strongly urge you to purchase your tickets before you ever approach the main entrance. There is absolutely no reason to wait until you reach the resort to buy your tickets, and buying before you arrive saves you a lot of time and headache, and leaves you with more options than those who show up without a ticket. On the busiest days, Disneyland implements a series of crowd-control measures, including restricting the sales of certain types of tickets, or even stopping selling tickets—so by purchasing tickets in advance, you can avoid standing in a long line just to buy tickets, as well as avoid being shut out from purchasing tickets altogether.
Tickets (and even annual passports) are available at many local grocery store chains, and be sure to check with your credit union or company benefit program. You can also purchase tickets at the Disneyland website and print them at home before you leave, saving you a long wait in the ticket booth lines.

If you still manage to get to Disneyland without a ticket – the resort has set up temporary ticket carts next to the Disneyland main entrance. These are full-service ticket desks, and can sell every type of ticket and passport. In addition, if you are staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel or Good Neighbor hotel, you can purchase tickets from the front desk before you head to the parks.
Take advantage of Extra Magic Hour and Magic Mornings if you can – both programs offer an extra hour in the theme parks before they open to the general public, and are a great way to get the must-do rides out of the way before crowds arrive.
- Extra Magic Hours – available to those who are staying at one of the three on-property resort hotels. Gives you access to Disneyland one hour before scheduled park opening time on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and to Disney California Adventure one hour before scheduled park opening time on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Valid theme park ticket and active hotel room key card required for entry.
- Magic Mornings – included with advance-purchase 3+day tickets and the Southern California CityPass. Gives you access to Disneyland one hour before scheduled park opening time on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Each person must have an eligible ticket to enter.

If you plan to do some shopping this week and you don't have an annual pass or cast member discount – you might want to purchase a snack before you make any major purchases. Many Disneyland Resort quick-serve restaurants are printing a merchandise discount coupon for 20 percent off at the bottom of their receipts. The coupons are only valid at participating stores, and usually only before noon, but check the expiration date—the coupon does not have to be used the same day you receive it.

Plan your meals. We've assembled a list of special holiday menu items that will be offered Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the Disneyland Resort to help you with any last-minute plans you may need to make.
Table service restaurants fill quickly, so you risk eating hot dogs from a vending cart or waiting in long lines at the counter service locations if you don't make reservations where possible. The new online dining reservation system introduced earlier this year, makes it easy to search for available tables without waiting on hold for hours with the Disneyland Dine Line. As of this writing, there were plenty of table-service locations with openings on Christmas Eve, including the Blue Bayou, but Christmas Day openings were more limited.
If you're in the parks and need help finding an open restaurant, stop by City Hall (Disneyland) or the Chamber of Commerce (DCA) and look for the marked “dining reservations” phones to contact the Dine Line—we've found calls made from Disney phones tend to be answered faster. If all else fails, call the Dine Line at (714) 781-3463 from your home or cell phone to see what they have available.
Rose Bowl teams to visit Disneyland
The two teams competing in the 2014 Rose Bowl Game are scheduled to visit Disneyland on Thursday, December 26 to participate in the annual Media Day. Expect the coaches and key players from Michigan State and Stanford to appear in a very brief ceremony in front of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle at 2:15 p.m.
We do not yet have a formal schedule for the ceremony, but based on past years, expect the event to impact operations around Main Street, with the Castle forecourt roped off starting around 11:30 a.m. to set up a seating area, and the Main Street vehicles to close for the day at noon. The seating area is reserved for invited guests only, but you can watch from the sidelines if you're willing to wait an hour or more.
Immediately after the ceremony, the coaches and players generally participate in interview sessions. Again, we don't have an official schedule, but keep an eye out for some of the players posing for media photos around the tesort starting around 3:00—the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mad Tea Party are two likely spots to catch a glimpse of the players.
We also expect the bands from the two Rose Bowl teams to appear at Disneyland after Christmas, but no details are yet available.
2014 Southern California CityPass
We have updated pricing for the 2014 Southern California CityPass. The basic pass increases by $9 for adults and $5 for children effective January 3, 2014, and comes with the same benefits as the 2013 version—a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. If you purchase the CityPass online, you can upgrade to a CityPass Plus for $34 ($25 for children), which adds one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park.
The CityPass website currently offers free shipping on the 2014 CityPass, or you can purchase them in person at the Disneyland Resort.
2014 Disney Dollars released
The first series of Disney Dollars for 2014 are set to be released at the Disneyland Resort this week, and features three of Disney's classic mountain attractions: Splash Mountain ($1), Big Thunder Mountain ($5), and Space Mountain ($10). Tune in for the 30th Annual “Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade”
The 30th Annual “Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade” airs this Wednesday, December 25, on ABC TV at 9:00 a.m. Pacific, Central, and Mountain; 10:00 a.m. Eastern. The parade also airs on CBC Network in Canada, and across the globe on the American Forces Network; check local listings for times.

The Disneyland segments were taped the weekend of November 9 and 10 at Disneyland, and are hosted by Nick Cannon. In addition to an enhanced version of A Christmas Fantasy Parade, the show features performances by Mary J. Blige, Jordin Sparks, Jason Derulo, Demi Lovato, Dove Cameron, and the cast of Teen Beach Movie.

This and that…
…There are just three more days this year to purchase a fresh candy cane from the Disneyland Resort. Candy canes will be made and sold at Trolley Treats in DCA on Monday, December 23; at the Candy Palace in Disneyland on Tuesday, December 24; and back at Trolley Treats on Wednesday, December 25. Color-coded wristbands are distributed at each location at park opening, and indicate when you can return to purchase one of the fresh candy canes from that day's production. Quantities are limited, and Monday and Tuesday will be your best day to visit, as crowds are expected to be smaller on those days.
…Here is a really neat holiday activity for the family at the Disneyland Resort: Pinocchio's Workshop at the Grand Californian Hotel is offering a snow globe ornament workshop, where you can create an ornament like the one shown below. The cost is $20 per person, and sessions are at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. through December 24. Space is limited, so sign up with the concierge at any of the three Disneyland Resort hotels. You need not be a hotel guest, but they are only advertising this within the hotels. [Update: Though we were told by a concierge at the Paradise Pier Hotel that anyone could participate in this activity last week, reader Ken wrote to say “They are ONLY available to hotel guests. I had to go 3 levels up in management to get someone to allow my son to participate. I doubt most readers would push that hard. it was fun, but I would hate for someone to get rejected because of that.” ]

…The current extra discount offered to Premium and Premier annual passholders is set to expire December 31, 2013, and there has been no word from Disney about potentially extending this offer again. The merchandise discount was “temporarily” raised from 10 to 20 percent (and 15 percent on food) so long ago we've lost track, and has continued at the higher level through a series of extentions. It will be interesting to see if Disneyland continues with the bigger discount on the highest-priced passes, or if they return the discount to the previous 10 percent as Walt Disney World did earlier this year.
…The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood is again hosting its popular Mary Poppins sing-along January 10 through 20, 2014. Attendees are invited to dress in costume and sing along to the film (lyrics are projected right on the screen) to classic songs like “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and “Let's Go Fly a Kite.” Daily show times are 10:00 am, 1:15 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 7:45 p.m., and general admission tickets start at $10.
The 7:45 p.m. performance on opening night (Friday, January 10) features a costume contest and “other surprises.” The 10 a.m. performance on January 14 is a “tiny tot” showing, with the house lights dimmed (rather than out), and the volume turned down a bit, which is great for younger children and those with sensory issues. - Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – closes January 6 for refurbishment. A reopening date of September 26, 2014 is listed on a cast member document, but this date is likely just a placeholder.
- Haunted Mansion – closed January 7–17 to remove the holiday overlay.
- “it's a small world” – closed January 21 through February 4 to remove the holiday overlay.
- Splash Mountain – closed January 21 through February 28 for refurbishment.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |
