Holiday season crowds pack Disneyland

The holiday crowds were out in force last week, prompting Disneyland to restrict admission at times on Friday and Saturday due to high attendance. At points during the weekend, the only people allowed first entry to Disneyland were guests staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel and Club 33 members—even annual passholders were denied first entry until the evening when the crowds thinned and the gates reopened.

Attendance was lower on Sunday, with no admission restrictions reported, but may peak again over the New Year holiday. We remind readers of this every year, but it bears repeating again this week: buy your tickets before you get to the Resort. Tickets (and even annual passports) are available at many local grocery store chains, and be sure to check with your credit union or company benefit program. You can also purchase tickets at the Disneyland website and print them at home before you leave, saving you a long wait in the ticket booth lines.

When Disneyland park nears capacity, the ticket booths offer a special “diversion” ticket, which offers immediate access to Disney California Adventure park, with access to Disneyland later that same day. This ticket is $92, the same price as a one-day, one-park ticket, so visitors who purchased this ticket basically receive a “free” park hopper upgrade to make up for not being able to spend the full day at Disneyland. This of course pushes all new arrivals to DCA until Disneyland reopens, making that park very crowded as well.

With New Year's Eve falling on a weekday this year it is less likely that the park will reach capacity, but most schools are still out for the holiday and crowds will remain strong. If you're visiting this week, plan to arrive as early as possible to get as much done before the crowds arrive. At 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning, the wait for the popular Jingle Cruise was under 15 minutes; just 30 minutes later, the line had grown to fill nearly the entire extended queue, including the little-used second floor queue. If you can plan to arrive by park opening, you should have a good hour or two before it gets really busy.

If you are planning to ring in the New Year at Disneyland, one tip is to enter Disneyland and get a hand stamp in the morning before heading to work, to Disney California Adventure, or to wherever you plan to spend the day. This affords you some protection if Disneyland begins to restrict admission, as reentry guests have priority over initial-entry guests. Of course, if the park reaches full capacity, nobody will be allowed back in—but if that happens, you probably don't want to be inside the gates, anyway.

Ring in the New Year at the Disneyland Resort

I was hoping to have detailed New Year's Eve information by Sunday night, but it looks like we'll have the schedule sometime on Monday. For now, here are the high-level notes; I'll post more details on our MousePad discussion forum as soon as I receive it.

Disneyland leaves Mobile Magic users on hold

On December 23, Disney quietly discontinued its Mobile Magic smartphone application, which provided interactive maps, schedule and wait time information for the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. The app was developed in partnership with Verizon, and was launched in 2009 with a $9.99 price tag. By late 2011, Disney had made the app free, and added an iPhone version in early 2012.

The app is no longer available for download via the Android Market or iTunes Store, and Disney is no longer updating or pushing data to it. If you have the app installed on your phone, you may as well delete it now and free up the memory on your device.

With Mobile Magic no longer available, Disneyland recommends that visitors use its mobile version of Disneyland.com, follow the @DisneylandToday and @DCAToday accounts on Twitter, or call the Ask Otto! automated phone system (714-520-7090) with their questions—but these are not viable replacements for the Mobile Magic app.

Of course, unofficial guide apps like TouringPlans (a MousePlanet sponsor) and MouseWait are still around, and their owners are likely thrilled to see that Disneyland has essentially abandoned the wait time app market for now.

There are two things about this decision that really confuse me: One is timing. Why discontinue a service like this at the start of the busiest season of the year? If there's ever a time when an official guide app is useful, it's when you're trying to plan out a trip to Disneyland during Christmas. Disney has spent the better part of four years trying to lure visitors to its official app; dropping the service now defies logic. Whatever contractual issues may have been involved, surely there was a way to expand the service two more weeks.

Second, why was there no replacement app ready for Disneyland visitors? Walt Disney World has been ramping up its new replacement app since August 2012 with the launch of its new My Disney Experience app, but Disneyland visitors have no such official replacement. Granted, Disneyland visitors are still years away from being able to use all of the features of the My Disney Experience app (features like advances Fastpass requests and dining reservations), but surely even a lightweight version of such an app would have provided a better experience for Disneyland users than just dropping out of the mobile app market entirely.

BCS Championship teams to visit Disneyland

The two collegiate football teams competing in the 2014 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) games are scheduled to visit Disneyland on Tuesday, December 31 to participate in a series of photo opportunities and press conferences.

A photo shoot with the coaches and key players from Florida State University, likely to include quarterback and Heisman Trophy recipient Jameis Winston, will take place in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. The team will also participate in a press conference at the ESPN Zone at 4:15 p.m., and a photo opportunity under the Sorcerer Mickey hat at the Disneyland Hotel at 4:40 p.m.

Coaches and players from Auburn University will participate in a press conference at the ESPN Zone at 6:15 p.m. and a photo shoot at the Sorcerer Mickey hat at 6:50 p.m.

Expect the coaches and key players from Auburn University and Florida State University to appear in a very brief ceremony in front of Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle at 2:15 p.m.

Between the photo opportunities and press conferences, the coaches and players will spend some time inside Disneyland. We don't have an schedule, but keep an eye out for some of the players posing for media photos around Disneyland—the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mad Tea Party are two likely spots to catch a glimpse of the players.

Celebrate Three Kings' Day at Disney California Adventure

Disney ¡Viva Navidad! festival wraps up next weekend with a Three Kings' Day celebration at Disney California Adventure. Disney says the Día de los Reyes Magos tribute will feature “scenic displays depicting holiday rituals,” along with craft projects for children and special food offerings just for the three-day festival.

Look for a small media presence in Disney California Adventure Friday morning as Disney brings in local and Spanish-language radio and television stations to help promote the final weekend of ¡Viva Navidad! and the special Three Kings' Day festivities. The promotion ends January 6, 2014 along with the rest of the holiday season offerings.

Team MousePlanet 2014 “Castle-to-Castle Challenge”

runDisney has the Coast-to-Coast Challenge and now Team MousePlanet has the “Castle-to-Castle Challenge”! We're challenging you to a virtual run/walk of 2,337 miles from Cinderella's Castle in Walt Disney World to Sleeping Beauty's Castle in Disneyland, straight across the U.S. You'll start in Orlando, Florida and travel through the states of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona on your way to the Happiest Place on Earth in Anaheim, California.

Participants will begin the journey following the WDW Marathon weekend with the goal to reach Disneyland in time for the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend. The miles start counting Monday January 13, 2014 with the challenge ending on Friday August 29, 2014.

While completing 2337 miles in 33 weeks would be almost impossible alone, we know you can do it as a member of a team. Each team will consist of no more than five team members. Teams will be randomly assigned with the exception of families that would like to take on the challenge together.

Of course, Team MousePlanet will have surprises for you all along the way. Finisher's Certificate will be awarded to all participants who complete the challenge by August 29, 2014. The first team to Disneyland also wins bragging rights on their accomplishment as well as a little “something special” from Team MousePlanet.

Here's the scoop:

• Register for the challenge by posting to our Team MousePlanet discussion forum. (free MousePad membership required):
  • All adult Challenge participants should be registered on MousePlanet (and if they aren't, sign them up!).
  • Families are welcome. Kids are welcome to team with a parent.
• Each participant will be randomly assigned to a team (of up to five members), with the exception of family members. We'll send team assignment notifications by January 10, 2014.
• The miles start counting on January 13, 2014. You are welcome to join at any time after this date.
• Miles accumulate each month
• To be fair, we can only credit back one month if participants join later in the year.
• Miles can be run or walked out on the roads and trails, or in the gym on a treadmill:
  • Miles earned during actual race events will count, so don't forget to include them
  • Conversions of other sports such as biking and swimming to running miles do not count towards either challenge.
• By the 15th of each month, send Lorree Tachell (RunningFool) a private message in MousePad with your total miles for the previous month. For example, report your January totals by February 15.
• Reporting is on the honor system. We won't be checking Nike+ or any other tracking mechanism to verify participant miles but we know Team MousePlanet members are totally honest.
• Results will be posted monthly by Lorree Tachell (RunningFool) on the Team MousePlanet discussion forum. Miles will be reported by team only; individuals will not be called out unless requested by their team.
• And lastly, have fun! This challenge is just to keep us engaged and to keep us moving between runDisney events.

2014 Disneyland Half Marathon fee schedule

runDisney has posted the fee chart for the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend events, and Lorree Tachell summarizes the pricing changes below. Public registration opens January 28, 2014, though we expect early registration to be available for select groups, including Disney Visa cardholders and Disney Vacation Club members.

Disneyland Half Marathon

• $195.00 on or before February 18 (an increase of $20 from 2013, and $100 from the inaugural year of 2006)
• $210.00 between February 19 and March 11
• $225.00 on or after March 12

Disneyland 10K

• $105.00 on or before February 18, 2014 (an increase of $10 from 2013)
• $120.00 between February 19 and March 11
• $135.00 on or after March 12

Dumbo Double Dare

• $320.00 on or before February 18, 2014 (an increase of $40 from 2013)

…Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen in Downtown Disney is hosting a N'awlins Masquerade New Year's Eve Bash on December 31, 2013 at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $99 per adult, and include:

…It's been a while since I've revisited “Mickey and the Magical Map,” the Fantasyland Theater stage show that debuted earlier this year at Disneyland. During a show this weekend, I noted quite a few tweaks to the show, including a reordering of scenes and the addition of Stitch to the “Hawaiian Roller Coaster” sequence. It always seemed to me that this number was lacking a character presence, especially as it was the only one in the show without either a Princess or a character, and it was nice to see that someone in the entertainment department clearly agreed.

…A reader asked about the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail refurbishment we list below from January 6 through February 27. This refurbishment does not appear on Disneyland.com, but does appears on an internal refurbishment schedule. As we've noted before, we compile refurbishment information from multiple sources, but even Disney's “official” communications can contain differing data. We're leaving the refurbishment on our schedule for now just in case.

…Likewise, Disneyland.com currently shows January 31, 2014 as the final day of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment, though Disney still officially says the ride will open “early 2014.” With no official announcement, consider the February 1 reopening date as a best-case scenario.

• Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – closes January 6 for refurbishment. A reopening date of September 26, 2014 is listed on a cast member document, but this date is likely just a placeholder.
• Haunted Mansion – closed January 7–17 to remove the holiday overlay.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $225/$209 Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $260/$244	Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells three-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 3-day Park Hoppers are $245 for adults ($230 for children); 3-day 1/park/day tickets are $217 for adults ($202 for children). Everyone Plays for the Kids' Price – this offer is available in different versions from different vendors: The Expedia website lists the following special offer: Book your Disneyland Resort Park 3-Day Hopper Ticket by September 30, 2013 and redeem now through October 31, 2013 to receive an Adult ticket for the Child ticket price (price listed reflects savings). Their listed price is $243.99 for an adult 3-day Park-Hopper Bonus ticket, one cent less than the child ticket. The regular price of that ticket is $260, so you save $16 if you book through Expedia. There do not appear to be any additional booking fees, and you receive your voucher immediately, so this seems to be a legit way to save a little on a 3-day Park Hopper ticket. You can read the fine print on our MousePad discussion forums. Get Away Travel has a similar offer with different dates. Tickets must be purchased by August 10 for travel through December 31, 2013. You must purchase the tickets at least four days in advance. The Get Away Travel offer also includes a $10 ESPN gift card. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.
Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $250/$230 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $285/$265	Get Away Today Vacations – MousePlanet sponsor Get Away Today Vacations sells four-day tickets at a slight discount over the Disneyland main gate price. 4-day Park Hoppers are $270 for adults ($250 for children); 4-day 1/park/day tickets are $240 for adults ($220 for children). Disneyland Resort Annual Passports	No discounts currently available for new purchases. California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport. Premier Annual Passport ($979) – valid at both Disneyland Resort and Florida's Walt Disney World Resort; includes parking. Premium Annual Passport ($669) – includes parking. Deluxe Annual Passport ($499) Southern California Annual Passport ($359) SoCal Select Annual Passport ($279) Parking Add On ($139) – add-on to Deluxe, SoCal and SoCal Select passes; blocked out July 4 and December 31. Blockout Day Ticket ($84) – grants one-day park-hopper admission to an annual passholder on a blockout day. Discounts for everyone	Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers: Disneyland Beach Towel for $13.95 with a purchase of $25 or more. Disneyland Tote Bag for $17.95 with a purchase of $25 or more. Sorcerer Mickey Watch for $18.95 with a purchase of $40 or more. The current purchase with purchase offers at the Disneyland Resort include a towel, tote bag and watch. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
Discounts for Annual Passholders	Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland has once again extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders. The discount is now valid through December 31, 2013.
Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders	Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Hotel and travel package offers	Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Discounts for US Military	2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.
