Refurbishment season begins
Although Disneyland's holiday season technically runs through today (January 6), the annual post-holiday refurbishment season has already begun. Several attractions are now closed, and several more are closing in the coming weeks. We've updated the refurbishment schedule to include new closures we've just learned about, including a two-month refurbishment of Indiana Jones Adventure and a nearly three-month refurbishment of Space Mountain, both beginning on Monday, March 3. These dates have not been confirmed by Disney, but if they hold, it means two more major rides are closed over the spring break season.

On the bright side, it does look like the Grizzly River Run refurbishment is off the schedule (although it still appears on at least one document), but Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular is on winter hiatus from January 23 through February 20. Construction walls are coming down around Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and we're hoping for an announcement from Disney to learn when that ride is officially reopening.
Of course, all of this is subject to change as soon as Disneyland announces its future plans for Tomorrowland and elsewhere. For now, here's the 2014 refurbishment schedule as we know it:

- Fantasmic! – went dark today, reopens February 13.
- Big Thunder Ranch – closed today to remove the holiday overlay, reopens January 11.
- Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – closed today for refurbishment. A reopening date of September 26 is listed on a cast member document, but this date is likely just a placeholder.
- Haunted Mansion – closes tomorrow to remove the holiday overlay, reopens January 17.
- Jungle Cruise – closes January 13 to remove the holiday overlay.
- Tiki Juice Bar – closes January 13 through February 6 for refurbishment.
- “it's a small world” – closes January 21 through February 4 to remove the holiday overlay.
- Splash Mountain – closes January 21 through February 28 for refurbishment.
- Tom Sawyer Island – closes January 21 through February 28 for refurbishment.
- Disneyland Monorail – closes January 23 for refurbishment.
- Pirates of the Caribbean – closes January 27 through February 13 for refurbishment.
- Alice in Wonderland – closes February 3 through June 5 for refurbishment.

Remembering Cicely Rigdon, Disneyland's Keeper of the Keys
Disney Legend Cicely Rigdon, known as the “Keeper of the Keys” for her role in maintaining Walt Disney's apartment above Disneyland's fire station, passed away on December 31, 2013. Rigdon held many positions with the Walt Disney Company, starting as a ticket seller in 1957 shortly after Disneyland opened. She was eventually promoted to Guest Relations, and is credited with developing the modern Disneyland Ambassador program in 1982.
Lisa Benedict Robertson, a Disneyland tour guide from 1993–1997 and the author of the Babes in Disneyland blog, shared some thoughts on Cicely Rigdon's legacy:
“Cicely Rigdon was more than a legend to the tour guides who have become part of the tradition she created more than 50 years ago; she was a standard for excellence and a name that will, for generations to come, always go hand-in-hand with the virtues and importance of good manners, fine grooming and understanding the importance of being a public face for the 'Happiest Place on Earth.' I had the pleasure of interviewing her several years ago for a short bio I was writing on her for one of our tour guide reunions. We spoke for an hour about her history with Disneyland and working with Walt Disney. It was a conversation I will never forget. Cicely was a fine, fine woman and she will truly be missed by her family, friends and her fellow plaid.”
Following her retirement in 1994, Rigdon was honored with a window on Disneyland's Main Street, U.S.A., commemorating her work with the Ambassador program. The window reads:

Cicely Rigdon was honored as a Disney Legend in 2005 alongside 17 other Disneyland cast members and Disney noteables, including Jack Wagner (the “voice of Disneyland”) and actor Steve Martin.
This and that…
…We confirmed last week that the extra merchandise discount offered to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders has been extended another year, through December 31, 2014. This promotion offers Premium and Premier passholders a 20 percent discount on most merchandise purchases, and extends a 10 discount discount to Deluxe, Southern California and Southern California Select passholders. The extra merchandise discount started out as a limited promotion in 2009, but Disney has continually extended the expiration date ever since.
…With the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend just around the corner, runDisney has announced a schedule change for the runDisney Kids Races on Saturday, January 18. The races now being at 9:30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. The runDisney website and the event guide have been edited to reflect this change, but we wanted to share this reminder for those who may have marked their calendars and not checked back. Team MousePlanet will again be out on the half-marathon race course in support of all of the runners and walkers. We'll have more information in next week's Update about where participants can find us, and how spectators can join us to cheer on the participants.
…The Spring 2014 Dapper Day, an unofficial “fashionable gathering,” is scheduled the weekend of February 22–23. Event organizers encourage participants to dress in their “Sunday Best” and join them for events and gatherings at the Disneyland Resort. More information is available at the Dapper Day website.
…Another unofficial event is scheduled the weekend of January 19–20. “Galliday: The Oncoming Storm” is a gathering of Doctor Who fans, many of whom will be dressed as their favorite Doctor or companion. More information is available on the event's Facebook page.

…River Belle Terrace recently updated its menu to add a few new items at breakfast, and add hot entrees back to the lunch and dinner menu. New breakfast items include cinnamon roll French toast and a build-your-own yogurt parfait at breakfast, with a variety of add-ins available at the toppings bar. For lunch and dinner, only one salad remains on the menu, and the sandwiches have been reworked with new ingredients. The new entrees include roast turkey or beef, a fresh catch of the day, and vegetarian black bean cakes.
…Readers have complained of a hidden price increase at Rancho del Zocalo during their most recent menu update. The restaurant's Mexican platters were previously served with a small scoop each of guacamole and sour cream. These condiments are no longer included with the platters, but are available for $1.29 each, a hefty upcharge considering the portion size. On the plus side, the tortillas served with the platters no longer come in a plastic bag, which had a tendency to leak and leave diners with soggy tortillas.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Their listed price is $243.99 for an adult 3-day Park-Hopper Bonus ticket, one cent less than the child ticket. The regular price of that ticket is $260, so you save $16 if you book through Expedia. There do not appear to be any additional booking fees, and you receive your voucher immediately, so this seems to be a legit way to save a little on a 3-day Park Hopper ticket. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid August 12, 2013, through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out through December 19, 2013 through December 31, 2013; April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. 2014 Southern California CityPASS ($328/$284) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
