New ticket discount for Southern California residents
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before June 6 for as little as $129 using a new discounted ticket that went on sale last week.
The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before June 6, 2014.
You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $129 for ages 3 and up, a $30 jump from the 2012 offer. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $35, a savings of up to $46 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket.
For 2014, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($159) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($194) in the promotion.
You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores.
If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until June to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 30, 2014. Tickets expires June 6, 2014, and are blocked out March 31 through April 20.
While Disney states that proof of residency required for purchase and admission, MousePlanet readers who have purchased similar tickets from off-property retailers during past resident discount promotions consistently reported that they were not required to provide proof of residency at the time of purchase. However, be aware that Disneyland Resort Main Gate cast members can—and may—require proof of residency when you first use the tickets. Whether such residency checks occur is an oft-debated topic on our MousePad discussion boards, but it is your responsibility to know the official policy, regardless of what the park's actual practice may be.

Magic Morning Early Admission
- Magic Morning currently allows early admission to select attractions, stores, entertainment and dining locations in Disneyland Park for one full hour before the parks open to the general public on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday.
- To enhance the Magic Morning experience, it is strongly recommended that Guests arrive at least one hour and 15 minutes prior to regular park opening.
- Valid theme park tickets must be purchased in advance of Resort arrival.
- For admission, each eligible Guest (ages 3 and older) must have a valid 3-Day So Cal Resident ticket.
- Applicable days and times of operation and all other elements including, but not limited to, operation of attractions, entertainment, stores and restaurants and appearances of Characters may vary and are subject to change without notice.

Preparing for Tinker Bell weekend
The 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon is next Sunday, with the Health and Fitness Expo starting on Thursday. It will be interesting to see what changes runDisney has made to deal with the crowding, confusion and hours-long lines that plagued the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend this past Labor Day. The addition of the Inaugural Tinker Bell 10K on Saturday and the move of the Neverland Family 5K event to Friday adds yet another level of complexity.
Thursday and Friday are certain to be the busiest days of the Expo, as everyone who is participating in the 5K and 10K events must pick up their race materials that day. The opening day of Expo is always especially busy, because that's when Disney and their partner vendors release the official race merchandise. In September, the official runDisney merchandise booth was so busy that the area was closed for over an hour on Expo opening day because of the overcrowding, and lines to check out were reportedly as long as three hours.
runDisney took some steps to address crowding at the 2014 Walt Disney World marathon expo in Florida this past weekend, adding a virtual queue for runners wishing to buy the latest collection of Disney-inspired shoes by New Balance and expanding the official runDisney merchandise area. So far we haven't heard how runDisney plans to handle the official merchandise and New Balance shoe sale for the Tinker Bell event, but we're hoping lessons learned from the last Disneyland event and last weekend's event in Florida help improve the experience for Tinker Bell participants.

Looking at the official race program, the official merchandise area is exactly the same size, which is worrying considering how crowded that area was in September. However, runner tracking has been relocated to the lobby, so the North Lounge may again be used for additional cash registers.
There are far fewer Expo vendors this year (42, down from 64 in September), which created more room for the relocated race shirt distribution tables. New Balance has the largest booths in the Expo, occupying over 1600 square feet of the floor.
For runners who are participating only in the Tinker Bell half marathon event (and not also the 5K, 10K or runDisney Kids Races), our advice is to sit out Thursday, and head to the Expo Friday or Saturday to avoid the biggest crowds. Note that the Expo closes at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 5 p.m. on Saturday.
A few notes of interest from the official race program, and suggestions from our Team MousePlanet veterans.
- Disney security conducted a inspection for the first time at last weekend's Walt Disney World marathon events, including the clear race bags and running belts and backpacks worn by runners. Expect a similar policy to be implemented at the Tinker Bell events, and leave extra time if you are checking a or running with a bag.
- runDisney will have three water-only stops along the 10K course, though they remind runners that drinking fountains are available all along the theme park portion of the race. If your prefer a sports drink when you run, bring your own. Runners who drink a lot as they run might want to bring their own water bottle, so you can refill as you go.
- The theme park restrooms will be open during the race, so consider heading for one of those if the line for the porta-potties is too long. This is especially true for the half-marathon. If possible, skip the porta-potties at the first water stop and wait until you get into Disney California Adventure.
- There is a note in the program that massages will be available for $1 per minute in the family reunion area. If you're looking for a post-race massage, be sure to bring cash.

Sunday

The race impacts traffic on Interstate 5 through the Anaheim area, closing the Disney Way exit from southbound I-5 from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m., and both Harbor Boulevard exits from the I-5 between 5:30 and 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. The half marathon course travels from the Disneyland Resort north towards Downtown Anaheim and back, so expect road closures on sections of major roads including Ball Road, Walnut Street, Broadway, Harbor Boulevard, and Anaheim Blvd. You can view the race course on pages14 and15 of the Tinker Bell Half Marathon guidebook.
If you want to cheer on your runner during the 5K and 10K, Disney recommends these viewing areas:
5K
- Finish line (Paradise Pier, inside Disney California Adventure) – 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
10K
- Mile 2.7 (Disneyland main entrance plaza) – 6:10 a.m. to 7:10 a.m.
- Finish line (Simba Parking Lot) – 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
Half Marathon
Disney does not allow spectators to view the half-marathon race course from inside either Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure unless they have already purchased a gold or platinum ChEAR Squad package. Online registration is closed, but you can check on package availability at the Expo. If you want to come cheer on the runners without purchasing a spectator package, Disney recommends four viewing areas on property:
- Start line (Disneyland Drive to Ball Road) – 5:00 to 5:30 a.m.
- Mile 3.1 (Disneyland main entrance plaza) – 5:15 to 6:30 a.m.
- Mile 5.5 (Downtown Disney District) – 5:30 to 7:00 a.m.
- Finish line (Simba parking lot) – 6:00 to 9:15 a.m.
All of these viewing areas are accessible only by foot; so walk from either the Mickey and Friends parking structure, or from your hotel if staying nearby.
Final bow for Billy Hill and the Hillbillies
Last Monday evening, in front of a standing room-only crowd that filled Disneyland's Big Thunder Ranch, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies thanked their fans for years of support and took their final bows. The venue was especially fitting for the band's farewell concert, as the group first appeared in the same area as The Barley Boys during the State Fair promotion in 1988.

Where other performers might have used their final shows to take shots at the Disneyland executives who made the decision to end their show, the Billies remained professional and stayed mostly in character to the end. Frontman Kirk Wall took the opportunity throughout the group's final weekend of performances to thank Disneyland for the band's long career, and said he would never have met so many of his fellow performers were it not for that job. He noted that he met his wife at Disneyland, and thanked all of the fans who came out in support of the band after Disneyland announced in November that it would retire the group after the end of the 2013 holiday season.

The band took the opportunity during its last performances to deviate a bit from the “Holiday Hillbillies” routine, adding a song from its Golden Horseshoe performance repertoire each set. This gave the band's fans one last chance to hear the Hillbillies perform songs like “Old Home Place,” “Ticket to Ride,” and “The Orange Blossom Special.”
Many fans wore overalls (inspired by the Hillbillies' costumes), bandanas, custom shirts or buttons to the final performances, and clapped and stomped along with the show. When Wall became emotional during the final set, the loudly singing audience covered until he regained his composure.

The band ended their final set by performing “You've Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story. Though the crowd hoped for an encore performance, when the band came back on stage it was only for one last bow, after which cast members gently but firmly asked the audience to clear the Big Thunder Ranch area.
Though many fans had hoped the strong show of support for the Hillbillies would prompt Disneyland to reconsider its decision to retire the group, there was no last-minute reversal. But after a short three-day “retirement,” the band, now called Kirk Wall and the Hillbillies, posted an announcement on its new Facebook page.

“Better go get those Knott's Seasonal Passes, y'all!!!,” it read, and linked to a schedule of performances at Knott's Berry Farm starting this Saturday, January 18, and running through the end of April. The band will appear most Saturdays and Sundays, with some additional shows on holidays and during spring break.
Meanwhile, Disneyland's Big Thunder Ranch reopened as scheduled this weekend following the removal of the holiday decor. With the Hillbillies off the schedule, the Ranch is now hosting The Frontierland Troupe each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through May. A more permanent version of the rare character meet-and-greet opportunity offered several times in the past years, the Frontierland Group consists of characters from Disney animated films and shorts, including Cinderella, Robin Hood, and Pinocchio. The characters alternate throughout the day, and pose in front of themed backdrops. Farley the Fiddler has been relocated to this area, joined by a live pianist and a rodeo performer who demonstrates rope tricks.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and generally can not be combined—you must choose one of the eligible offers. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014.

Discounts for Disney Visa Cardholders |
Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Hotel and travel package offers |
Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |
