Upheaval at the Opera House | Farewell, Mark V | Haunted Mansion event sells out | Unite HERE responds | This and That
Upheaval at the Opera House
MousePlanet’s David Koenig broke the news (link) last Friday about extensive changes planned for the Bank of Main Street and Opera House. David writes:
It was formally announced during last Monday’s “Mickey’s Roll Call” (a fancy term for the daily meeting for managers) that the Bank of Main Street and a portion of the Opera House lobby will become the new Disney Gallery.
The bank’s 1955 interior, complete with hardwood teller windows, has been used primarily for Annual Passholder processing over the last 15 years. It all will be torn out, along with at least half of the Opera House’s lobby. Most of the artifacts from the lobby, including Walt’s offices, are planned to be moved to Disney’s California Adventure, as its entrance corridor and Hollywood area are gradually transformed to re-create the Southern California of Walt’s early days.
For the last six months, the Gallery has been operating in temporary quarters in the Opera House exit. But fans have been pushing for a permanent home ever since it was evicted from its second-story spot in New Orleans Square to make room for the Dream Suite.
After the move, the Opera House exit will revert back to its original, noncommercial self. The AP processing center will be relocated to the Plaza Pavilion, which was another, even-higher-visibility location considered for the new Disney Gallery. The former restaurant facility is receiving new kitchens in the back to serve the New Orleans Square restaurants when their own kitchens go down for rehab. After that, the Plaza Pavilion kitchens will serve as back-ups and for special events.
Farewell, Mark V
As David Koenig also reported, Disneyland’s last Mark V Monorail has made it’s final lap around the park (link):
Monorail Red sports a prototype of a slide-down window. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Monorail Purple, the last Mk V to run through Disneyland, was removed from service a few weeks ago. The vehicle is now in the Roundhouse, being cannibalized for parts for Orange Mk VII, just as Orange was picked apart for Red VII and Blue VII.
No ceremony was held when old Purple was taken off-line for the last time. According to one Roundhouse worker, “WDI was in a rush to get her off and take her apart for spare parts.”
The major problem with the new Mk VII monorails has been overheating cabins due to poor ventilation. New slide-down windows will be installed later this month, but prototypes were tested last week on Red.
One cast member attributed the temporary windows to last week’s unexpected heat wave. “The windows were put in as a desperate measure to keep Red running,” he explained. “They were just prototypes that will not be used in the final design.”
But if temperatures reach 80 degrees again, before the monorails can be permanently retrofitted, expect to hike to the Disneyland Hotel.
Haunted Mansion event sells out
Although park attendance and hotel occupancy rates are both reportedly lower than projected, the demand for tickets to next September’s Haunted Mansion Holiday event was so strong that tickets for all four package levels sold out in just minutes after registration opened last week. Tickets for the top two packages went on sale Tuesday, and both packages sold out in less than 15 minutes. Tickets for the remaining two packages went on sale Wednesday morning, and hopeful attendees quickly overwhelmed Disney’s notoriously fragile event registration system, causing the system to crash less than 20 minutes after registration opened.
Unfortunately, the combination of strong demand, malfunctioning computers, and Disney’s unpopular new “one registration per transaction” policy left many couples with just one ticket. MousePlanet reader KarenW2 reported that she was able to purchase a ticket for herself, but then experienced computer problems as she completed a second reservation for her husband, and did not receive a same-day e-mail confirmation for his ticket. After several calls, faxes and an e-mail, the couple was able to confirm that both reservations had been processed. Other readers reported similar situations, and Disney briefly accepted names for a waiting list in the event additional tickets become available. Disney will also allow guests who purchased tickets to receive a refund in the event their friend/spouse was unable to purchase a ticket, and will accept name changes on existing registrations until August, 28.

Unite HERE responds
Unite HERE Local 11 doesn’t think they really have Disney’s “last, best and final” offer, and they don’t appreciate Disney trying to tell them when to bring a proposal to their membership for a vote. In an interview with MousePlanet last week, Ada Briceno, Secretary Treasurer of the newly reorganized union, expressed frustration with the status of the yearlong negotiation with Disney, and denies a Disney statement that the union did not respond to a contract offer made on December 12, 2008.
Briceno told MousePlanet that she felt both parties were “making progress” during the last negotiation session between Disney and the union in December when Disney suddenly presented the union with their “last, best and final” offer that included bonus payments to cast members if the agreement were ratified by the end of the year. Briceno says that the terms of this offer were a “complete departure” from the terms the two parties had been discussing up to that point. Briceno said that after taking a day to review the terms of the offer, she contacted Disney and asked the company to return to the bargaining table, offering potential meeting dates in late December and early January. Briceno said that she also sent an e-mail to Disney’s negotiation team this past week, offering meeting dates in February, but has received no response from the company.
Asked why the union allowed the December 31st deadline to slip past without bringing Disney’s proposal to the membership for a vote, Briceno said “They [Disney] have no right to tell us when to take an offer to our members,” adding, “We don’t tell them when to take our offer to their shareholders.” She said “we don’t believe we have their bottom line,” and Local 11 wants Disney to return to the bargaining table to continue working on the provisions that were under negotiation when Disney presented their last offer.
Briceno expressed surprise when asked about complaints from union cast members about the pace of the negotiation, and concerns that cast members who were not current on their union dues would be excluded from any ratification vote. She said “we want all our members to ratify, even if they haven’t paid their dues.” Asked why complaints and anti-union comments from self-identified Disney union members had been removed from the union-backed Disney is Unfaithful blog, Briceno said that they union was not even sure that those comments had been posted by real union members. Briceno told MousePlanet that she has spoken with hundreds of union members and “nobody has asked to vote on this contract,” but went on to say that there are always “one or two people who just love Disney and are doing their own thing.”
Unite HERE Local 11 represents over 2,300 cast members employed as bellmen, restaurant servers and housekeeping attendants working at the three hotels of the Disneyland Resort. Cast members have been working without a contract since the union rejected an offer to extend the contract that ended in January, 2008. The negotiations have been marked by protracted disagreements over meeting venues and multiple public protests, including an incident in August when over 20 union representatives and community leaders were arrested for blocking traffic on Harbor Blvd.
The main area of disagreement is health insurance for covered employees. Local 11 members are the only Disney cast members who have a separate health plan, paid for by Disney through contributions to the union’s insurance trust fund. Most members who work an average of just under 18 hours per week receive “free” health insurance for themselves and their spouse and/or children. Under the most recent proposal by Disney, all cast members will transition to the same Disney’s Signature Health Care plan that covers all other eligible Disneyland Resort cast members, but Disney will continue to pay the full weekly premium for two years. Starting in 2011, cast members will begin paying about 25% of of the weekly premium for the Disney Signature plan, and by 2013 will be paying the same weekly premium as other covered cast members.
This and That
…Brady MacDonald of the Los Angeles Times reports (link) that the replacement for the Parade of Dreams is not a parade at all, or at least Disney is not calling it a parade—it’s a “Street Party”, which may bring back memories of a certain “Streetacular”. Brady notes that the not-parade will feature seven floats, two show-stops and lots and lots of confetti.
…It was reported in the North County Times (link) that Legoland California, in Carlsbad, has filed requests for permission to build a new 250-room, Lego-themed hotel on the site of one of their current parking lots.
…The Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholder meeting will be held in Oakland, California on Tuesday, March 10 (link).
…The Los Angeles Times reported (link) that Disney has offered voluntary buyout packages to 600 high-level executives, including some from the Disneyland Resort. The report also noted that if not enough executives volunteered for the buyouts, Disney would have to implement involuntary layoffs with a “lesser severance package.”
…We received word of a new discount code for registration for the Disneyland Resort half-marathon. Through March 31, registering with the code (RunDLRwdw09) will save you $10 off the regular $120 registration fee. However, we’ve also heard that the previously reported discount codes (RunDLRstg09 and RunDLR09) may still work and those get you $15 off. (registration link)
…While we’re on the subject, discount hotel rates for the DLR half-marathon weekend are now available through GET Travel, Disney Sports’ travel provider. Reservations made by February 15 are exempt from the usual $50 deposit requirement. To get the special hotel rates, start at GET Travel’s booking page (link) but instead of completing your reservation online, you will need to call 888-877-4445, extension 105. Booking forms can also be printed and faxed to 916-939-6806.
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site is currently only publishing refurbishment information about 6 weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
This information is pulled from many sources but much thanks go to MouseSavers.com for providing the bulk of the information. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link).
- Tickets valid for Southern California residents within Zip codes 90000-93599 and Northern Baja California residents within Zip codes 21000-22999.
- Proof of residency required.
- The 2Fer ticket is valid for one day at Disneyland park and another day at Disney’s California Adventure park , but not for both parks on the same day. The 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket may be used at both parks on the same day.
- Tickets expire 30 days from first visit. First visit must occur between January 6, 2009 and June 3, 2009. [Note: This is a full two months longer than the 2008 promotion, and does not exclude the Spring Break period as such offers usually do.]
- Each use constitutes one full day of use.
- Limit 8 tickets per person, per day with valid ID.
- Tickets may not be sold or transferred for commercial use.
- Offer may not be combined with other discounts or promotions. [Except for the “What Will You Celebrate?” birthday admission offer as explained below.]
- Subject to restrictions and change without notice.
- You can purchase these tickets starting January 6, 2009 at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, as well as Disneyland Resort Hotels and Disneyland.com. Vons stores, The Disney Stores and the Disney Desks at places like South Coast Plaza and The Grove may also carry the tickets, but we have not been able to confirm this yet. [Note: in past years, it has taken quite some time for non-Disney outlets to receive the tickets, so don’t be surprised if your local Vons store or mall Disney Desk doesn’t have them yet.]
- If you live within the residency area and your birthday is on or between January 6 and June 3, you will receive a “2Fer Birthday Ticket” instead of a one-day, one-park ticket. The 2Fer terms and conditions apply to this ticket.
- You must use the first day of your 2Fer on your birthday.
- You can upgrade the 2Fer Birthday Ticket to the Southern California 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket by paying $25.
- The 2Fer ticket is considered valid admission media for the purposes of the “What Will You Celebrate?” offer, so people who already have a 2Fer can receive one of the three Alternate Gifts.

Southern California 1-Day Park Hopper – Disney is not currently offering a discounted Southern California 1-Day Park Hopper at the Web site. Two Day Park Hopper Regularly $143/$123 |
2009 “Southern California 2Fer Ticket” ($69 / $59) – Visitors who live in Southern California and Baja California, Mexico can now purchase the 2009 “Southern California 2Fer Ticket.” This special ticket offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney’s California on one day and then to the other park on a second day for the price of a one-day, one-park ticket ($69 for adults and $59 for children ages 3 to 9). The 2009 promotion also features a return of the “Southern California 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket” for $94 for adults / $84 for ages 3-10. This is $25 more than the 2Fer ticket and allows you to visit both Disneyland and DCA on the same day. The offers includes much the same fine print as previous promotions: The 2009 offer is slightly complicated by the “What Will You Celebrate?” promotion, and special options are available to eligible residents with birthdays between January 6 and June 3. AOCVCB 2-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($141/$121) – The discount (from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau) is $2 off the box-office price for both adults and children. You can now print these tickets at home, though a $1 per-ticket convenience fee applies. Deluxe Annual Passport |
Costco $50 bonus gift card offer – Costco members can receive a $50 Disneyland gift card when they purchase a Deluxe Disneyland Resort annual passport for $269 at a participating Costco location. The offer should be available at all Southern California Costco stores that currently sell Disneyland admission, but the vouchers may not have arrived in all locations yet. [A list of the 37 Costco locations within 50 miles of the Disneyland Resort is available on our MousePad discussion board (link), and we have noted which locations are confirmed to have these tickets available. If you are a Costco member and live near one of the stores that is not confirmed, please check the next time you’re there and then let us know so we can update the list.] There are no residency restrictions on this ticket, and it can be upgraded to a Deluxe with parking or Premium passport. Better still, the $50 gift card can be applied towards the cost of the upgrades, which nearly pays for the $59 parking option or drops the net cost of a Premium Annual Passport to just $339. |

Disney’s Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – Package includes accomodations one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey’s Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at four DCA attractions (Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It’s Tough to be a Bug!, Golden Dreams); Preferred Showing of Turtle Talk with Crush (Priority Viewing at the first Turtle Talk with Crush show of the day, on any one day – one voucher per Guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Contact Disney Travel or your favorite travel agent.
Alaska Airlines “Kids Fly Free to the Disneyland Resort” promotion – Valid for travel between January 7 and June 17, 2009 when you also book your hotel through the airline. Significant restrictions apply to the promotion, including blockout dates. This offer can be a good deal for some families, but make sure that you compare the total quoted package price against the same elements if purchased a la carte. You may be able to take advantage of other published airfare specials and hotel discounts to create a less expensive vacation package. Unfortunately the Alaska Airlines Web site can be sluggish, making comparison shopping time consuming, but you should definitely do your homework before you buy.
Other Discounts
Disney Visa Free-Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers for free at either Disneyland or Disney’s California Adventure. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental locations at each park.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Membership in the Rainforest Cafe gets you a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. It also gets you priority seating if available, which can make a huge difference on busy days. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. So if you know you will be eating there while at Disneyland and have a Rainforest Cafe local to you, it may make sense to prejoin the Safari Club so that you can use the award during your trip. See the Rainforest Cafe Web site for details (link).
ESPNZone MVP Club – Membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
AAA Restaurant Discounts – AAA (American Automobile Association) members can receive a 10% discount (excluding alcohol) at Plaza Inn, Wine Country Trattoria Ariel’s Grotto, PCH Grill, and Goofy’s Kitchen.
Downtown Disney Patina Restuarant Discounts – Three Downtown Disney restaurants operated by the Patina Group are currently offering lunch and/or dinner specials. Check at the restaurant for menu and price details.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
