'Tomorrowland' movie filming scheduled at Disneyland February 4-5
Last year several sites reported that Brad Bird's Tomorrowland was filming in Vancouver, Canada, specifically some outdoor scenes re-creating the 1964 World's Fair with “it's a small world” and the Carousel of Progress.
The website YVRSHOOTS.com has some great photos of the filming; head over to their site and check them out. As you can tell from their photos, the production set up the ticket booth and a bridge from “it's a small world” against a giant blue screen. Typically, this means they'll go back and digitally add the background.

Inside the Magic reported that filming for the science fiction mystery film (scheduled for a 2015 release and starring George Clooney) moved to Orlando over Veteran's Day Weekend, with interior filming done at Carousel of Progress.
Now Tomorrowland is coming to Disneyland February 4 and 5, with filming taking place in front of “it's a small world.” Disney is keeping mum on the details, but here's what we've learned from various sources:
- Filming takes place February 4 and 5, with clean up work February 6 and 7. This filming is likely the reason the post-holiday refurbishment of “it's a small world” was extended by three days. The ride is now scheduled to reopen on February 8.
- Mickey and the Magical Map will be dark on February 4 and 5.
- The Disneyland Railroad will not operate on February 4.
- Small World Mall (the parade route between “it's a small world” and the Matterhorn) will be closed February 4 and 5. During this time, you can access to Toontown via the same walkway used during parades.
- The Merida meet-and-greet will be relocated closer to the Matterhorn on February 4 and 5.
- The Pumbaa Parking Lot will be closed to Cast Members February 4 and 5 to allow production trucks to park there. Cast members normally assigned to the Pumbaa lot are being given alternate parking locations for those days.
- There will be some light set dressing of the “it's a small world” exterior to make it better resemble 1964. Readers cstephens and Don Bitz shared photos of the work done over the weekend to prepare for the fiming.
- As with the Walt Disney World filming, don't expect to catch a glimpse of George Clooney. There may be some actors from the film on hand for the shooting, but he won't be one of them. In fact, don't expect to see much of anything. The walkway that will be open has extremely limited views onto the parade route, and those are easily blocked by planters. Expect every step to be taken to keep people from getting a good look at the set, and don't make a special trip just to see it.

New discount on Annual Passes for DVC members
Disney Vacation Club launched its new “More Member Magic” program last week with a special discount offer on two Disneyland Resort annual passports:
- Disneyland Resort Deluxe Annual Passports – $429, a $70 discount
- Disney Premier Passport (good at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World) – $849, a $130 discount, and the first time this pass has ever been offered at a discount
The discounts are valid February 6 through April 30. You can purchase the Disneyland Deluxe AP through a new online ticket store that launches this Thursday, February 6. You must, however, purchase the Disney Premier Passport in person at either Walt Disney World or Disneyland ticket booths.
There is a note on the offer that reads, “Even if you've already purchased one, you can still take advantage of these limited-time savings. Purchase before April 30, 2014, and you can activate your new Pass or Passport when your old one expires.” Shortly after posting the offer, Disney amended the website to add, “anytime between now and Jan. 31, 2015.”
Personally, I cannot wait to go to Disneyland on February 6 and try to pre-purchase a Disney Premier Passport. Having tried to do this before each of the last two price increases, I've been told that there is absolutely, positively, no way in the world for Disney to sell an unactivated Premier passport that can be activated when my current pass expires. Let's see how long it takes them to figure out a workaround for the “impossible.”
Records smashed during Disneyland Half Marathon registration
It's gotten so we don't even have to wait for the races to start to watch records fall at the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend events. As predicted, the 2014 Dumbo Double Dare, a back-to-back 10K and half-marathon challenge, sold out in less than an hour once registration opened to the general public last week. The spots allocated for the Annual Passholder “second chance” early registration went even faster, and were snapped up in 11 minutes.
The 10K race sold out in under an hour, followed by the runDisney kids races at just over three hours. This was a surprise to many race watchers, as the kids races are often among the last events to sell out.
runDisney quietly added a new “Welcome Event featuring Runner's World” to the half marathon weekend events, seemingly a replacement for the meetups runDisney used to host before race weekends. The 90-minute experience includes a question-and-answer session with experts from Runner's World magazine, a ride on Soarin' Over California, and a runDisney tech shirt. The package also grants participants early entry into the official runDisney merchandise area before the race expo opens to the general public. Priced at $89, the package sold out in about six hours.
The half-marathon sold out around nine hours, and by the next morning, runDisney reported that all events, including the 5K and the Pasta in the Park Party, were at capacity.
Many runners said that just registering for the event was more stressful than finishing the half-marathon will be. The runDisney website crashed shortly after registration opened Tuesday morning, leaving many hopeful runners no way to access the registration page. Fortunately, runners who had the direct links to the Active.com registration pages (posted here last week), or simply searched the Active.com website, were able to register.
Still, the Active.com system only allows a user to register one person at a time, which left families trying to register multiple people racing to complete the process before their chosen event sold out. Reader THpoohbear hit an unexpected snag trying to register her son for a kids race, saying, “I was logged in as myself assuming that they would let me put in a minor as the participant. By the time I figured I couldn't do that and logged out and started the process again, it was sold out.”
Disney Visa cardholders were disappointed to learn that they were not offered an early registration opportunity as they had been for some past races, and were doubly frustrated when Disney Visa sent out a discount code for the half-marathon weekend events well after registration had already opened.

Refurbishment roulette
Reader jcatron243 titled his post on our MousePlanet message boards, “Are they playing with us?,” and it's easy to understand the frustration in trying to plan for an early March trip to Disneyland. The refurbishment schedule is changing on an almost daily basis, with major attractions appearing and disappearing from the list with no explanation from Disney about the cause for such major changes in the schedule.
The good news is that the previously scheduled refurbishments of Space Mountain and Indiana Jones Adventure are off the list for now. It seems that Disney doesn't want to have these rides down while Big Thunder Mountain is still closed, so that gives you an idea of where that project may be. The Soarin' Over California refurbishment, originally scheduled February 18 through June 5, has been shortened to February 24–28. The ride was to have received a digital upgrade during the longer refurbishment, so it would seem that has been postponed. Alice in Wonderland is back on the refurbishment schedule as of March 10, but we don't know the end date.
A friend asked me if people really make their plans based on the refurbishment schedule. While many visitors seem surprised to get to Disneyland and discover their favorite ride closed because they didn't do any research before their trip, others, like many of our MousePlanet readers, follow the schedule even more closely than I do. Reader DwarfPlanet posted, “It was due to this weird appearing and disappearing schedule that we decided not to go to DLR this year but to WDW again.” Reader keyholder wrote, “I know we are looking at having to postpone our trip until there are some definite answers about some of our favorite rides,” and reader candles71 noted, “Even our 12-year-old is considering pushing [our visit] until fall.”
For now, here's the updated refurbishment schedule as we know it, with the usual “subject to change dramatically without notice” caveat.

- Mickey and the Magical Map – closed February 4 & 5 due to filming around “it's a small world.”
- Tiki Juice Bar – closed through February 6 for refurbishment.

- Mark Twain Riverboat – closed February 24–28 for refurbishment.

- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – closed until “early 2014” for a major refurbishment. Disneyland.com shows it closed at least through March 9. The ride was to have reopened October 30, 2013.

- Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage – closed for refurbishment. A reopening date of September 26 is listed on a cast member document, but this date is likely just a placeholder.

The folks at Disney Cruise Line have been busy rolling out a whole series of new programs and policy changes:
New Internet plans and pricing
Disney Cruise Line is rolling out a new Connect@Sea Internet plan in the coming weeks to its four cruise ships. The new plan is based on the amount of data you use, not the time spent online, with packages available. Here's the new pricing structure:
- Pay As You Go – $0.25 per MB
- Small package – 100 MB for $19 ($0.19 per MB)
- Medium package – 300 MB for $39 ($0.13 per MB)
- Large package – 1,000 MB for $89 ($0.09 per MB)
Guests booked in Concierge Categories S, T and V Staterooms will receive the Small package (100 MB) at no charge. If they exceed that, they can purchase one of the packages described above.
Concierge Guests will continue to receive special internet package benefits:
Guests booked in Concierge Category R Staterooms receive free internet service for the length of the cruise.
The rollout is effective for each ship as of the following sailing dates:
- Disney Magic – Monday, February 3
- Disney Dream – Sunday, February 16
- Disney Wonder – Wednesday, February 26
- Disney Fantasy – Saturday, March 8
New policy regarding passenger-carried food
This new policy will have little impact on most passengers, but is a huge win for passengers with food allergies or other dietary restrictions, as well as for those traveling with toddlers.
Effective immediate, passengers can take “non-perishable, government-approved snack food items in their sealed, original packaging” with them when they disembark the ship in ports of call, as well as at the end of their cruise.
Disney allows passengers to bring this food onto the ships, but until now has forbidden passengers from taking any food off the ship, regardless of whether or not it is sealed. For people with food allergies or other dietary restrictions, this has limited their ability to participate in day-long shore excursions because they could not ensure the availability of safe-to-eat food at the various ports of call. Parents were not allowed to bring baby food off the ship.
Even with the new policy, passengers are not allowed to bring opened containers of food back onto the ship, so it's best to bring single-serving packages of the desired food with you so you don't wind up tossing the rest of an opened container. This is important for families who pack larger containers of formula.
As always, passengers may not bring perishable food, homemade food, pre-cooked food, or open containers onto the ships in any port, and may not take open containers off the ship at any time.
Passengers may bring a cooler no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″ onto the ship only for the purpose of storing medication or baby food.
Food brought onto the ship must not require any food preparation assistance, and cast members are not allowed to assist passengers in preparing the food items. Food brought onboard can not be stored in the ship's galley, and must be stored in the passenger's stateroom.
Breast milk is not impacted by this policy, and may be brought on or off the ship as needed. Breast milk cannot be checked, and must be in the passenger's carry-on luggage.
New wine pairing dinner at Palo
The adults-only Palo restaurant has added a new “Esperienza del Vino” wine pairing option during dinner service. Esperienza del Vino is a five-course fixed menu of dishes from the current Palo menu, paired with a set selection of Italian wines. The dessert course is paired with Passito Di Pantelleria Pellegrino 08.
The price for this new wine pairing option is $59, in addition to the current $25 dining fee. No substitutions are allowed in the Esperienza del Vino pairing, but you can still order off the menu if you prefer, at the standard $25 dining fee, and choose your own wines from Palo's wine list at an additional cost.
New pregnant passenger policy
Earlier this month, Disney Cruise Line amended its Terms & Conditions to update the policy regarding pregnant passengers. Previously, DCL would not allow you to sail if you had already entered the 24th week of pregnancy as of your sail date. Under the new policy, you may not sail if you will enter your 24th week at any time during the cruise.
The new policy reads:
“Women who have entered their 24th week of pregnancy as of their embarkation date or who will enter their 24th week of pregnancy during the cruise will be refused passage due to safety concerns. Neither a physician's medical statement nor a waiver of liability will be accepted. In addition, Disney Cruise Line cannot be held responsible or liable for any complications relating to pregnancy at any stage.”
This policy is already in effect, so expectant women who have a Disney cruise planned should double check their dates to make sure they are still OK to sail.
New pricing structure for nursery service
The cost of It's a Small World and Flounder's Reef nursery service has been increased on all four cruise ships. Pricing for the first child is now $9 per hour, a 50 percent increase over the current $6-per-hour fee. Pricing for the second child in a family (staying in the same stateroom) jumped from $5 to $8 per hour.
New embarkation day hours for poolside sundry shops
The poolside sundry shops on three Disney Cruise Line ships will be open on embarkation day while the ships are still docked in Port Canaveral.
Whozits and Whatzits (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy) and Quacks (Disney Magic) will open once embarkation begins so passengers can purchase sundries, toiletries, and pool items. If you've sailed with Disney Cruise Line, Quacks on the Magic is the tiny kiosk near the Mickey pool that seemingly appears out of nowhere—it actually folds into what looks like a support pillar of the ship. Quacks sells towels, sunblock, goggles, and small water toys.
Whozits and Whatzits is a larger store on the newer ships, and has a much larger selection including bathing suits.
Hours are as follows:
- Quacks – Noon to 6:30 p.m.
- Whozits & Whatzits – Noon to 8:30 p.m.
Both shops are closed during the boat drill, as per regulation.
Previously, these stores were closed on embarkation day, leaving passengers no way to replace their forgotten sunblock. One of my tips for families traveling with pool-crazy kids is to wear or carry bathing suits onto the ship, and use those first hours before the boat drill to get in some pool time before the other passengers get their luggage. It's one of the least-crowded pool experiences you'll get unless you stay on the ship during a port day.
All other DCL shops remain closed during embarkation as usual, and generally open once the ship is in international waters.
DCA's Mariachi Divas win second Grammy award
The next time you spot the all-female Mariachi Divas performing at Disney California Adventure park, take a moment to watch the whole show. After all, where else can you enjoy a live performance by a two-time Grammy Award-winning group while waiting for your Radiator Springs Racers Fastpass return time?
The Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea won their first Grammy for Best Regional Mexican Music Album in 2008, and last weekend received a second award in the category for their ninth album, “A Mi Manera” (My Way).

Reader elke is wondering if Disneyland is less crowded the following morning after the park has a 10:00 p.m. or midnight close the night before:
Since I've really only been to DLR during their low season hours (hours more or less 10–8 I believe), I have been wondering whether the mornings are actually quieter on those days when the park stayed open late the night before. I was thinking this may be the case because it's harder to get up early when you've been out in the park until 10:00 p.m. Plus, I guess a magic morning that begins at 9 a.m. is not all that hard to catch, whereas one that begins at 8 a.m. may pose more of a challenge.

Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2014 CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 12 at the Disneyland Resort. Event details and registration information will be available at a later date.
2015
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Mother's Day (May 10) weekend. No additional details available.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Disney Vacation Club members can save on two Disneyland Resort annual passports during a special offer that starts February 6
The discounts are valid February 6 through April 30. The Disneyland Deluxe AP will be available for purchase through a new online ticket store that will launch on February 6. As before, the Disney Premier Passport will only be available for purchase in person at the Walt Disney World or Disneyland ticket booths. There is a note on the offer which reads, “Even if you've already purchased one, you can still take advantage of these limited-time savings. Purchase before April 30, 2014, and you can activate your new Pass or Passport when your old one expires.” Shortly after posting the offer, Disney amended the website to add, “anytime between now and Jan. 31, 2015.” California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

2014 Southern California CityPASS ($328/$284) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. – is the same as the CityPASS—a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood—with the addition of one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy all three of the items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link).
