Celebrate Gospel returns to Disney California Adventure
Celebrate Gospel returns to Disney California Adventure park on Saturday, February 15 to commemorate Black History Month. The annual event, now in its fifth year at the Disneyland Resort, features choirs from around Southern California. The invited groups will perform three sets between 11:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Stage 17 building in Hollywood Land. The performance schedule is:
Times | Performers |
---|---|
11:00 am – 12:45 pm |
|
1:45 pm – 4:00 pm |
|
4:00 pm – 6:30 pm |
|
To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the event, Disney has added a Gospel History Walk, “a walk-through exhibit highlighting the history and rich traditions of gospel music.” Admission to all performances and to the Gospel History Walk is free with DCA admission.
Passholders invited to Sing Along Under the Stars
Thanks to a tip from reader cstephens, we shared last week that Disneyland had scheduled a “Sing Along Under the Stars” event for Disneyland Resort annual passholders every Wednesday and Thursday night in February at the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree. Details were posted to the Disneyland annual passholder website early last week, and the first two sing-alongs were held last Wednesday and Thursday.
Passholders must register in person on the day of the event and receive a wristband to attend. Wristbands are distributed starting at 2:00 p.m. outside the Westward Ho! store in Frontierland, and are available while supplies last. Whether due to bad weather or the short notice of the first events, neither event sold out last week, but that may not be the case for future events.
Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree opens at 5:30 p.m., and the movie begins at 6:30 p.m.
Reader disneylandkitty attended the first event featuring Beauty and the Beast, and wrote about her experience:
When we first entered the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree, we were handed a light-up red rose. At the next station, we were given a bag of popcorn. Next, we received a bottle of water, and at our last stop we were offered hot chocolate or coffee. I thought all these added goodies were very nice of Disney.
We were let in about an hour early to enjoy our goodies and play some trivia. They went back and forth asking kids and adult questions. Next, they picked six kids out of the crowd. They split them in groups of three. Three growled like the Beast and the other three showed their muscles like Gaston. The crowd picked the best kid from both groups. The two winners got [Mickey Mouse plush].
Then the announcer taught everyone in the crowd different moves to go along with different songs. She also told us to light up our roses ever time the rose was in the movie.
Right before the movie started, Belle, the Beast, Cogsworth, and Lumeire came out on stage.
The whole experience was alot of fun, singing to every song and doing the little dance moves in our seats. I for sure want to go back for the rest of the [events].
The dates for the remaining events are:
- The Little Mermaid – Wednesday and Thursday, February 12 and 13
- Aladdin – Wednesday and Thursday, February 19 and 20
- The Lion King – Wednesday, February 26
Refurbishments revisited
Another week, another version of the spring refurbishment schedule. I fear I'm going to run out of alliterative titles by the time a schedule is somewhat finalized.
This week's changes bring us an extention of the “it's a small world” refurbishment to install fall-protection measures in the ride. The ride was to have reopened February 12 after the holiday refurbishment, but is now slated to remain closed through April 9. The ride is then scheduled to close for a second time April 20 through May 29. Personally, I hope the extended refurbishment includes cleaning work on the exteior of the ride. While photographing the Tomorrowland set, I noticed how dingy the white building has become.
The reopening of “it's a small world” was originally delayed for filming of the “Tomorrowland” movie, but now the ride is closed for fall-protection equipment. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The Tomorrowland Terrace restaurant is slated for another refurbishment February 18 through March 6, but young Padawans can relax—the Jedi Training Academy show will perform even while the adjacent restaurant is closed. Plaza Inn is closed April 20 through May 15, and as of now there is no alternate character breakfast in Disneyland during this period.
Indiana Jones Adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Grizzly River Run, King Arthur Carrousel, and Ariel's Undersea Adventure are all new additions to the schedule. There is no announcement of a reoening date for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but the ride is closed at least through March.

As part of the Finding Nemo refurbishment, Disney drained the Submarine Lagoon over the weekend. As was the case when Disney drained Paradise Bay to install the World of Color infrastructure, the 5 million gallons of water from the Submarine Lagoon was relesed to the Orange County Sanitation District, which will treat the water and release it to the local groundwater aquifer.
The submarine lagoon is approximately half drained as of Sunday afternoon. Photo by Tony Phoenix.

Earl of Sandwich highlights menu changes
It's been more than a year since the much-anticipated Earl of Sandwich location in the Downtown Disney district opened, but for some reason the California branch has yet to draw the huge crowds that flock to the company's Walt Disney World location. Last week, the Earl's marketing team set out to draw attention to the California location and highlight its spring menu by inviting a group of media and bloggers to visit the Downtown Disney restaurant and sample items from the menu. The group included a number of bloggers from parenting sites who were new to Earl of Sandwich, and those from Disney sites who are more than familiar with the restaurant and its offerings. [Earl of Sandwich is a favorite lunch spot of mine when I'm researching in the parks.]

Earl of Sandwich revised its menu last year to add more salads, soups, and wraps, including a Thai chicken salad and berry chicken almond salad. A friend complained about the disappearance of the “Veggie” sandwich, which left just one vegetarian sandwich on the menu. I asked restaurant manager Domingo Baccay about off-menu options for vegetarians. He said that since all sandwiches, salads, and wraps are made to order, they can all be made without meat.
The revised menu also included more dessert options, adding cupcakes and brownie creme sandwiches to the popular cookies, brownies, and bites. Bakery items are made on-site at the resturant each day, with bakers starting at 3:00 a.m. each morning.

If you're an Earl fan, you already know about the holiday menu and the popular Thanksgiving-dinner-on-a-bun Holiday Sandwich, but I didn't realize that Earl of Sandwich releases a new menu at the start of each quarter. The special items on each menu are offered only for three months, and get replaced by the new quarterly menu after 90 days. The first special menu of 2014, introduced in January, includes:
- Philly cheesesteak sandwich
- BBQ chicken sandwich
- Bacon macaroni and cheese – the hands-down favorite among the children at the event, and available without the bacon for vegetarians
- Brownie bark

This and that…
…Filming of Brad Bird's movie Tomorrowland took place last Tuesday and Wednesday at Disneyland, after which actor Hugh Laurie tweeted, “Tomorrowland officially wrapped. Yesterdayland. Now we place in a pre-heated oven at 220 for the next 18 months.” The sequences filmed at Disneyland's 'it's a small world” will be used with sequences filmed last November in Vancouver, Canada, where a mock-up of the ride's loading area was constructed in front of a blue screen.

…The Tiki Juice Bar reopened at Disneyland last week after a brief refurbishment. The area does not appear to be any larger, but the counters were replaced and a second cash register installed. The service flow has changed a bit, as well. Five cast members work between the counters at peak operation, two helping customers at each counter and one making the Dole Whips and floats. The first cast member at each counter takes and serves your order, while the second one takes your payment. Additional cast members replenish supplies from the nearby Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe. The new system seems a bit faster, but a cast member admits that it's hard for five people to work behind the counter at the same time, and says they keep bumping into one another as they figure out the new workflow.

…Some Disneyland fans have complained about the condition of Space Mountain, and how the building's white surface is marred with visible dark streaks. As long-time readers may remember, Walt Disney Company received a citation and notification of penalty (PDF) in April 2013 from the State of California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), partly in response to a November 2012 accident in which a maintenance worker suffered a serious injury when his unapproved anchorage failed and caused him to slide down the roof of Space Mountain while cleaning.
After receiving the notice and penalty, Disney voluntarily closed Space Mountain for three weeks to assess the citations and safety protocols. A few weeks ago, we noticed construction on the top of Space Mountain, and a cast member tells us this is part of the installation of a new fall prevention system that will let cleaners work on the outside of the building again.

…Reader currance recounts her experience with purchasing a Disney Premier Passport renewal voucher from Disneyland using the Disney Vacation Club discount we reported last week. As we noted, Disneyland ticket booth cast members, leads, and managers have previously insisted that they is no way to purchase a renewal voucher for this pass, so currance was curious to see what would happen when she tried to take advantage of the offer for DVC members:
I was up for a fight today so I went to the ticket booth and asked for a DVC discounted Premiere pass to activate later in the year. The very polite cast member was aware of the DVC discounts, but unsure how to do a Premiere anything that wasn't immediately activated. She kept saying that a single person couldn't be in the system twice. I'm not entirely sure what that meant, but I'm sure it made sense to her. A very helpful lead was called over, and together they figured out a way to print an “Annual Pass Certificate – Premier – Disney Vacation Club.” The lead appeared to have training in the DVC discounts, but indicated that she had yet to sell one, and stuck around to make sure that transaction went smoothly. A few notes:
- Despite the Web site indicating that the passes were good through January 31, 2015, mine printed with an expiration date of December 31, 2014. I asked about that issue but decided against making a big deal about it at the time, as I am not sure what my WDW/DL plans will be and how much I will need that extra month. If that month is important to you, be prepared for extra time if they don't fix the system between now and when you go.
- The lead made sure that the cashier knew that the DVC members must have their actual membership card with them. Simply knowing the membership number is not enough.
- I was with a friend who needed to get his Premier pass reprinted as some of the numbers had rubbed off. I took the first available cashier since I thought my transaction would take longer. I'm not sure how long he waited to be helped, but we were both done at around the same time. It seemed very straightfoward.
- I mentioned to the cashier and the lead that the DVC website indicated the discount was only good through April 30, 2014. Neither of them had been told the end-date of the promotion, which was possibly why the cashier was at first a bit confused why I wanted to buy the pass now, when my current pass doesn't expire until mid-December. I don't know if this is a case of Disney not telling their frontline employees all of the relevant information, or if this is a test to possibly make the discounts more permanent (or both). I would love discounts at this level or higher all the time for DVC members, especially when compared to what WDW has been offering to their DVC members. Although I do like locking in current prices for future passes, I really wouldn't mind just buying my tickets when they expire and not having to store tiny pieces of paper with great monetary value for nearly a year if the discounts were more consistent.

Question of the Week
Reader desertworshipguy is looking for some “off the beaten path” ideas for an upcoming vacation to the Disneyland Resort.
So at the beginning of April myself and my 14 year old nephew will be going to the DLR. We both have annual passes and go often. However, we will be there for 4 days, 3 nights. This is my Christmas present to him. Just him & I running wild at the DLR! Really looking forward to this trip.
Since we go often, I am looking for suggestions. What are some unique things that we could do that would be different then the “normal” things? Any dining suggestions that are like “wow”. Thanks!

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 16–17. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2014 CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 12 at the Disneyland Resort. Event details and registration information will be available at a later date.
2015
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Mother's Day (May 10) weekend. No additional details available.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of June 2, 2013.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy all three of the items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:

Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club. If you are already a Safari Club member, you can migrate your membership to the new Landry's Select Club at no charge, and start to earn points in the new program. The new Select Club eliminated the entree discount and free appetizer offer that was included with the Safari Club, replacing them with a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. If you are not yet a member of either the Safari Club or the Landry's Select Club, you can pre-purchase your membership before your trip. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
