Fans invited to show their Disney Side during a 24-hour party
Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World are again hosting a 24-hour party to kick off the summer season, and this year, attendees are invited to show their “Disney Side” by dressing as their favorite Disney character. The “Rock Your Disney Side: 24-Hours” event begins at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23 and runs 24 hours until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 24.
Adding the costume-party element to this 24-hour event is sure to bring out the creative side of Disney fans, but keep Disney's published rules regarding costumes and accessories in mind. These are pretty much the same as those in place for the in-park Halloween events, but they bear repeating:
- Costumes should be child-friendly and adhere to any guidelines determined by Disney.
- Costumes should not be obstructive, offensive or violent; drag on the ground; contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest; contain any weapons or objects which resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
- Masks may be worn, but they must not obstruct vision, and eyes must be visible at all times.
- Guests who dress like Disney characters may not pose for pictures or sign autographs.
- Guests who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused admission.
Beyond the list of rules regarding costumes, and the disclaimer that “only select attractions, entertainment and services will be available,” Disney is yet to release details about this year's event. Check out our preview of the 2013 event to get an idea of what you may expect. Disneyland's Foods department has used this event in past years to test new menu offerings, and restaurant-hopping is a popular activity during the party.
It looks like the Disneyland Resort's Grad Nite team had enough warning this year to avoid a repeat of 2013's scheduling conflict that left park managers with the unenviable challenge of managing both the Monstrous Summer All Nighter and a Grad Nite on a holiday weekend Friday night. With no Grad Nite scheduled to impact access to large portions of Disney California Adventure, including Paradise Pier and Cars Land, we expect to see many more entertainment offerings centered in that park.
Disney Side of Summer Sweepstakes
Disney Parks is offering one Disney fan the opportunity to visit both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World and attend the Rock Your Disney Side: 24-Hours event during one whirlwind seven-day, six-night vacation by entering the Disney Side of Summer Sweepstakes via Twitter.
The grand prize vacation starts in Walt Disney World, where the winner and up to three guests is spending four days and three nights. From there, the group travels to the Disneyland Resort for three days and two nights. The prize includes hotel accommodations along with airfare, an $800 Disney gift card, and hours hours with a VIP tour guide at both resorts. The vacation must be taken May 20 through May 26.
This is a Twitter-only contest, and you must have or create a public Twitter account to enter. Complete rules are on the Disney Parks blog. You can enter once a day now through March 31, and the winner will be announced on or around April 4.
Magic Morning changes at Disneyland
With the Market House Starbucks open for business on Main Street U.S.A., Disneyland is changing the operation of Magic Morning starting this Tuesday. Beginning March 4, the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe no longer opens during Magic Morning, and instead opens during normal park hours. Carnation Cafe, the Main Street fruit cart, and the Market House Starbucks are all opening for Magic Morning, and for non-Magic Morning guests who enter in the 30 minutes before the park opens to the general public.
Disneyland restaurants introduce Braille menus
Eight restaurants at the Disneyland Resort now offer Braille menus for guests with visual impairments. The locations are:

- Redd Rockett's Pizza Port
- Tomorrowland Terrace
Disney California Adventure
- Ariel's Grotto
- Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta
- Pacific Wharf Cafe
- Taste Pilot's Grill

Cast members are also available to read menus to guests at locations that do not yet offer Braille menus, or at a guest's request. Disney agreed to provide “certain Braille schedules, menus and maps” as part of a settlement reached in 2013 in a class action lawsuit claiming Disney failed to meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The U.S. Disney theme parks have made other changes stemming from this settlement in recent months, including:
- Installing Braille maps in the theme parks and Downtown Disney
- Adding and installing signs for service animal relief areas on Disney property
- Replacing touch pad-activated lockers with keyed lockers at the Disneyland Resort
- Providing crates where visitors can leave service animals while riding attractions that the dogs are not permitted to ride.
runDisney assembles a new event at Disneyland
It's official—runDisney is bringing a new race to the Disneyland Resort, but it's not what many people expected. The Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend takes place November 14–16, 2014, with a half-marathon, 5K and runDisney kids races. Disney says this race will introduce a new half-marathon course, and there is no 10K scheduled for this event.
This event is one week after the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend in Walt Disney World, and gives runners another chance to earn their coast-to-coast medal since the Disneyland half-marathon is already sold out. Some runners are even exploring the possibility of running the Super Heroes half-marathon in Anaheim, and driving or flying to Las Vegas to run the nighttime Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas half-marathon later the same day.
Registration is rumored to open on March 19 for annual passholders and March 26 to the general public, and reaction on social media sites points to another rapid sell-out of the inaugural events. Entry fees are:

Many race watchers were surprised by this announcement. As we've reported, runDisney moved Disneyland's Tinker Bell half-marathon from January to Mother's Day weekend in May starting in 2015, a move that many believed was designed to create room for a new event at Disneyland. There have been rumors that runDisney was also planning a fourth Disneyland Resort race for the October/November time period, but we frankly expected the first announcement from runDisney to address the January race slot for 2015, not add an entirely new event weekend to this year's schedule. We're still eagerly waiting to see what runDisney has planned for January 2015.
Select passholders invited to a St. Patrick's Day event
If your Disneyland Resort annual passport expires between March 17 and June 17, 2014, be on the lookout for an invitation to a special St. Patrick's Day event at Disney California Adventure. This special event is targeted at passholders with soon-to-expire passes, and is part of a program to improve passholder renewal and retention rates in a year where there's very little new happening at the Disneyland Resort.
The after-hours event on Monday, March 17 will include “a variety of special offerings, surprises and experiences,” including a short preview of Muppets: Most Wanted.
If your pass expires during the target window, visit the Annual Passholder website starting March 6 to register for the event. Eligible passholders can invite up to 5 annual passholder guests, and those guests need not have passes that expire during the same March through June window. Be prepared with the names and pass numbers of your guests, as you'll likely be required to provide those during the registration process.
Corrected 2014 Grad Nite dates and details
Editor's Note: In last week's Disneyland Resort Update, we incorrectly reported that the Disneyland Resort would host just seven Grad Nite events for high school seniors, compared to 15 nights in 2013. Several readers wrote to say that their high school was attending Grad Nite on a date we had not listed, and one reader told me that Disneyland's Grad Nite website displayed only those nights that had not yet sold out. In fact, there are more Grad Nite events this year than in 2013.
We reached out to Disneyland's Grad Nite team Monday morning, and they confirmed that the 2014 Grad Nite dates are May 16, 17, 21, 22, 24, 28, 30, 31; June 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19. We corrected the information in last week's Update, but wanted to make sure to present the information again here for those who may have missed the correction. We very much regret the error.

Registration closes on April 11, or whenever the division sells out. Space for each division is extremely limited. Players must be at least 6 years of age and one player on each team must be at least 18 years of age.

…The Redwood Creek Challenge Trail refurbishment has been extended to March 8, which also delays the reopening of the Wilderness Explorers Ceremony. The area was to have reopened February 27.
…This week's scheduled refurbishment of Heimlich's Chew Chew Train is cancelled.
…Disney seems to be trying to sink rumors that Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage refurbishment is just a smokescreen for a plan to close the ride. New signs have appeared around the attraction stating the ride will reopen in late 2014.

…Disney cast members were advised last week that they may be asked to park at Angel Stadium next Sunday, March 9. This parking plan is usually implemented only when the resort expects unusually high attendance, so be prepared if you are planning a visit that day.

Reader Pinkhoody wants to know if they should reschedule their three-day trip to the Disneyland Resort because of Grad Nite:
Just found out Grad Nite will be happening the 2 out of the 3 days of our Wed-Fri 5/21-23 Disneyland trip.
How has Grad Nite affected your trips in the past? How would Grad Nite affect our DL experience? I've never encountered it. (Limitations/ Closures/ Bad hours?)
I am eyeing the first week of June, mid-week. Tues-Thurs 6/3-5 looks really good (all clear as far as blackout dates go on all calendars).
We will still be affected by 1 Grad Nite if we changed our plans, but is 1 out of 3 that much better than 2 out of 3? If it didn't affect your travel costs, would you make the switch?

Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2014 CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 12 at the Disneyland Resort. Event details and registration information will be available at a later date.
2015
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Mother's Day (May 10) weekend. No additional details available.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

When purchased in advance, this ticket comes with one Magic Morning entry; tickets sold at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths do not include this benefit. 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. The discounts are valid February 6 through April 30. The Disneyland Deluxe AP will be available for purchase through a new online ticket store that will launch on February 6. As before, the Disney Premier Passport will only be available for purchase in person at the Walt Disney World or Disneyland ticket booths. There is a note on the offer which reads, “Even if you've already purchased one, you can still take advantage of these limited-time savings. Purchase before April 30, 2014, and you can activate your new Pass or Passport when your old one expires.” Shortly after posting the offer, Disney amended the website to add, “anytime between now and Jan. 31, 2015.” California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy all three of the items currently available if you wish. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you pre purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priorty seating benefit. = ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |
