Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend coming in 2015
[Note: due to an error on the official Disney Vacation Club website, an earlier version of this article stated that early registration for DVC members started Tuesday, June 3. Early registration for DVC members and annual passholders begins Wednesday, June 4. We regret any confusion we caused.]
May the Force—and the Internet—be with you Wednesday morning if you're one of the annual passholders or Disney Vacation Club members planning to take advantage of the early registration opportunity for the just-announced inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events. runDisney finally officially announced the highly anticipated race last week, and the online response points to this being the most popular runDisney event yet.
The event is scheduled for the weekend of January 15 to 18, 2015, the weekend previously reserved for the Tinker Bell half marathon events. runDisney announced last year that the Tinker Bell half marathon's move to Mother's Day weekend starting in 2015.
This new event weekend includes (3.1-mile) 5K, (6.2-mile) 10K and (13.1-mile) half-marathon events, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Wookie Welcome party. Also offered is the Star Wars Rebel Challenge, an event for those who wish to complete both the 10K and half-marathon. Challenge events have proven very popular with runDisney participants, who seem perfectly willing to pay a little extra versus the a la carte registration prices to receive an additional event shirt and a special challenge medal.
runDisney usually posts tiered event pricing, which leads to the (usually false) impression that registration is still be available two or more months later. Given that recent events have sold out in minutes and hours rather than weeks and months, we're only listing the first-tier price for each event.

There are a few interesting items in the event details. While the 10K course winds through both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the half-marathon course is described as going through DCA but past Disneyland before heading onto the streets of Anaheim.
Perhaps in response to complaints raised during and following the 2013 Tinker Bell events, Disney has added a disclaimer stating that, while the 5K is not a timed event, participants must complete the course in under 50 minutes (a 16-minute mile) in order to receive a medal for that event.
Once again, runDisney is requiring participants to attend the event expo in person to pick up their race bib, no longer allowing them to have others pick up their race materials. runDisney has also dropped the “Family Fun” branding from the 5K event, and billed it as an adventure for “adults, teens, and tweens.” This is in contrast to the “Never Land Family Fun Run 5K” planned for the 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend event, which is advertised to “runners of all ages—kids, tweens, teens, and adults.”
Some runners have complained about the timing of this new race, which falls just one week after the 2015 Walt Disney World marathon weekend events in Florida (and overlaps with the inaugural Castaway Cay 5K Challenge cruise). Of course, this has been the case for years in regards to the Walt Disney World and Tinker Bell events, but some runners seem to feel the conflict more keenly when it involves Star Wars. Others question why the West Coast resort has landed runDisney's two most recent hot new races this year (the already sold-out Avengers Super Heroes half-marathon and the new Star Wars half marathon), and wonder when Walt Disney World is getting a new event.
Early registration for annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members opens Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Based on past events and the intense interest in this new race, we strongly recommend that anyone eligible for early registration take advantage of that perk Wednesday to give yourself a fighting chance at one of the coveted spots in this inaugural race.
Links to the early registration pages will be posted on the respective group's websites the morning of registration. We suggest logging in to the DVC or passholder sites before registration opens so you don't waste any time when the links are posted.Early registration is officially open through June 9, but Disney limits the number of slots offered during the early registration period so there is still availability when general sales begin.
General registration opens June 10, 2014. If you aren't eligible for early registration, don't despair—Disney only sets aside a portion of the overall event capacity for early registration. However, we strongly recommend that you skip the runDisney website on registration morning and register directly through Active.com. The runDisney site often crashes on registration days, where the Active.com website is still running.
Tinker Bell event details updated
The runDisney website also now offers more details—but still no pricing—about the 2015 Tinker Bell event. The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon events, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Annual Passholder early registration opens August 6, 2014. General registration opens August 12, 2014. More information is at the runDisney website.

Summer celebrations in Downtown Disney
The Disney Parks Blog last week posted a schedule of special Downtown Disney events for the summer season. The first event is this Friday, June 6, when Downtown Disney hosts a “DOLE Days of Summer” Hawaiian night. It looks like these weekly events are a joint marketing effort by DOLE pineapple and Disney's Aulani resort in Hawaii. Look for pineapple-spiked foods at participating Downtown Disney restaurants, and Hawaiian entertainment including a special photo location sponsored by Aulani.
Beach volleyball returns to Downtown Disney the weekend of July 16 to 20, with exhibition games featuring sand volleyball pros and local beach volleyball teams.

Disney Cruise Line requires some passengers to change Hawaiian cruise plans
Passengers who booked the September 17, 2015 cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver paired with the September 27, 2015 cruise from Vancouver to San Diego learned last week that Disney Cruise Line is requiring them to cancel one or both of the cruises. Passengers were told Disney had “just discovered” this cruise combination is a violation of the Passenger Vessel Services Act of 1886. This legislation prohibits transport of passengers between two different U.S. ports, unless the ship stops at a “distant, foreign port” during the journey.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where the ship is porting between the two cruises, is not considered a distant, foreign port for purposes of the PVSA. Passengers who embark in Hawaii and stay on for both cruises to disembark in San Diego would be in violation of the act. Violations can result in fines of $300 per passenger.
Passengers booked on the back-to-back cruises are asked to cancel either the Hawaii-to-Vancouver leg or the Vancouver-to-San Diego leg. Impacted passengers who booked the cruises onboard to take advantage of the rebooking incentives are also allowed to transfer their reservation to a different sailing, and retain those incentives.
This is not the first time Disney Cruise Line has allowed passengers to book cruise combinations that turned out to be a violation of the PVSA. In 2012, passengers who sailed from Los Angeles to Vancouver, and then from Vancouver to Seattle at the start of the Alaska cruise season were required to disembark with their luggage and change staterooms between cruises, in an effort to satisfy the requirements of the PVSA. U.S. Customs and Border Protection was not satisfied by this arrangement, and passengers scheduled to sail from Seattle to Los Angeles via Vancouver at the end of the Alaska season were forced to cancel one of the cruises.
Disney has also drawn criticism for booking private charters of their ships after opening reservations to the general public, a practice that impacted two 2014 cruises. The October 21, 2014 sailing on the Disney Magic was cancelled after being chartered for the Turner Classic Movie Cruise. The August 24, 2014 cruise on the Disney Dream was cancelled after the Disney Vacation Club chartered the ship for a member's cruise. Passengers booked on the cruises are asked to pick another sailing date, and are occasionally offered additional compensation for related expenses.
Save the Date for three CHOC events at the Disneyland Resort
Paint the Way to Miracles & Magic – Saturday, July 26
During this annual fund raiser for Children's Hospital Orange County, 192 participants will help paint one of two tile murals that will be displayed in Downtown Disney for the year. The press release reads:
CHOC Children’s and the Downtown Disney District would like to invite all young artists to participate in an exclusive and rare opportunity. Children will be able to hand paint a custom tile that will be installed in a beautiful, lighted display in Downtown Disney. These original hand painted tiles will be prominently displayed on the walkway between the Disneyland Hotel and the Downtown Disney District. You, your family and friends will be able to view the artwork any time you visit the Disneyland Resort and the Downtown Disney District.
Please join us on Saturday, July 26, 2014, in the Downtown Disney District where children will “Paint The Way To Miracles & Magic.” This fun filled CHOC Children’s fund raiser is limited to only 192 tiles, so act now by reserving your tile or tiles today.

Taste of Downtown Disney – Thursday, August 14
Children's Hospital Orange County is hosting its seventh annual Taste of Downtown Disney event on Thursday, August 14. Join CHOC for a night of food, wine, and spirits from most of the Downtown Disney restaurants, with live entertainment, free valet parking, and the opportunity to help out an outstanding local charity. Tickets are $75 per person, and all proceeds benefit CHOC Children's. The press release reads:
Join us on Thursday, August 15 as we taste and savor the flavors of fine cuisine, wine and spirits while enjoying the unique ambience and flair of the Downtown Disney District. Top off the evening by indulging in decadent desserts and coffee from La Brea Bakery Café and Jamba Juice. Live entertainment will also be featured throughout the evening for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy a reception, tray passed appetizers, olive oil tasting and select wine/spirits/beer pairings at Catal Restaurant & Uva Bar, ESPN Zone, House of Blues, Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria, Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen, WonderGround Gallery, Tortilla Jo's. CHOC Walk – Sunday, October 12
Children's Hospital Orange County last week honored Team MousePlanet as the 4th place community fundraising team in the 2013 CHOC Walk. Team MousePlanet walkers raised nearly $8000 at the annual fundraiser. Thank you to all of the readers who walked, to those who donated, and those who helped cheer us on. I was genuinely surprised to learn that our team ranked so high, and am so proud of the efforts and generosity of our readers.

Reader monosuna is looking for advice about the Blue Bayou, and especially wants information about off-menu options for vegetarians:
We are planning a trip to Disneyland after 3 years of saving up for it and plan to dine at the Blue Bayou during the trip. It will be the first time dining there for my husband and 2 kids(age 5 and 9) and I haven't been there since I was 13(ahem, DECADES ago). I have a few questions:
What are the other vegetarian options that have been available if you don't want the portobello? I have seen others ask for alternatives and were able to get some.
When is the quietest time to dine there? Our trip will be Monday-Thursday in middle August and we would like to be there and get a water table. I was thinking an early lunch or early dinner would be best?
Do the glow cubes work after the restaurant? Could the kids take them home?
What is the best dish that they currently have (we won't order the Monte Cristo due to stomach issues with deep fried things)

- Grad Nite events – This party for high school seniors graduating in 2014 will be held on these dates: May 28, 30, 31; June 4, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19. The 2014 event includes admission to Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure park from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
- President Obama commencement address at Anaheim Stadium – June 14. While not a Disney event. visitors planning to visit Disneyland that day should leave extra travel time to get through Orange County due to expected heavy traffic as a result of this presidential appearance.
- 7th Annual Taste of Downtown Disney – Thursday, August 14. This annual fund raiser for Children's Hospital Orange County includes appetizers and wine tasting at several participating Downtown Disney restaurants. Tickets are not yet on sale, but more details are available on the event website.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 29–31 (Labor Day weekend). All events are full.
Fall
- Halloween Time – mid-September to October 31, 2014
- Dapper Day Fall Soiree – Friday, September 12. More information at the event website.
- Mickey's Halloween Party – 2014 event dates not yet announced.
- Gay Days at Disneyland – October 3–5. (Unofficial event) More information on the event website.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 16–17. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- 2014 CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, October 12 at the Disneyland Resort. Event details and registration information will be available at a later date.
- Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 14–16, 2014. Registration for all events are full. More information at the runDisney website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The ticket is $129 for ages 3 and up, a $30 jump from the 2012 offer. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. 2014 Southern California CityPASS ($328/$284) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy all three of the items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels; Souvenir Park Hopper ticket with voucher for admission to Mickey's Toontown Morning Madness, plus one Magic Morning (early entry) for three-day or longer Park Hoppers; preferred seating at three DCA attractions (Disney's Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Muppet*Vision 3D, It's Tough to be a Bug!); preferred showing of Turtle Talk With Crush (priority viewing at the first Turtle Talk With Crush show of the day, on any one day—one voucher per guest); Disney Dream coin keepsake (one per package), luggage tag and lanyard with pin; a Downtown Disney Fun Card; and a “Character Call” from Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Crush. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |
