Report: DCA attendance jumps 9.5% in 2013
The Themed Entertainment Association last week released its 2013 Theme Index, which includes its estimates of museum and theme park attendance numbers.
Disney seldom discusses attendance numbers. However while the TEA figures can only be considered estimates because Disney won't officially confirm them, the numbers are generally considered reliable, and at least offer a look at attendance trends.
Overall, TEA reports the Walt Disney Attractions group saw a worldwide increase of 4.8 percent in 2013, with over 132 million people visiting the Disney theme parks. This is slightly ahead of the 4.3 percent increase TEA reported among the top 25 theme parks worldwide, a group which includes all 11 Disney theme parks.
Worldwide, TEA reports attendance at the top 20 water parks grew 9.3 percent in 2013. Disney's two water parks were each estimated to have grown at 2 percent.
Here are TEA's overall ranking and estimates for each of the Disney theme and water parks.

Star Wars Half Marathon registration opens Tuesday
Eight minutes.
That's how long it took for annual passholders and Disney Vacation Club members to snap up the spots in the upcoming runDisney Star Wars Rebel Challenge event (which combines the 10K and half-marathon) set aside for early registration last week. Unlike the Avengers Half Marathon registration, where the 5K sold out first, in record time, MousePlanet's resident runDisney registration tracker Lorree was surprised to report that the next Star Wars race to sell out was the kids 200 meter dash, followed by the 5K event. A little more than three hours after early registration opened, every race except the half-marathon had sold out. The half-marathon is still not sold out as of Sunday night, but we suspect that interested runners are waiting to see if they can register for the Rebel Challenge during general registration this week before opting to register for the half marathon alone.
Although Disney only sets aside a small number of slots for early registration, the fast sellout should portend a similar scenario when general registration opens tomorrow morning (Tuesday, June 10) at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific; noon Eastern).
If you were not eligible for or missed out on early registration last week, here are our tips on how to maximize your chance at getting into the race you want:
- Be prepared – set an alarm, clear your calendar, fire up your computer, have your credit card handy, and and be ready to register as soon as the window opens.
- Set up an account with Active.com for each person in your party that is registering for any of the races, before registration begins (we recommend doing this today) to avoid wasting time doing this once registration opens.
- Register each participant individually – you are given the option to register additional runners at Active.com, but you risk losing all the registrations should the extra time you spend cause the event to fill up before you complete your transaction. This occurred during early registration for someTeam MousePlanet members on our MousePad discussion board, who saw a “Sorry, this event is full” message when they tried to add another person and wound up losing both registrations.
- Each person should register independently – rather than register those in your group sequentially (in separate registrations), each adult person should register directly. Simultaneous transactions increase everyone's chances of registering successfully.
- Go directly to Active.com to register – bypass the runDisney website, which is sure to slow down once registration opens.
- Register in order that the races are likely to sell out – if you are registering more than one runner, or plan to register for both the Rebel Challenge and the 5K, based on past events, relative event capacity and last week's pre-registration, we recommend the following order:
- Rebel Challenge
- 5K
- 10K
- Kids Races
- Half Marathon
More than 50 MousePlanet readers have already signed up for the races, and more are planning to register this week. Once you've confirmed your registration, please add your name to the Team MousePlanet roster on our MousePad discussion forum. You can also join the discussion about the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events, and share the trials and tribulations of training with like-minded Disney fans.
Another Adventures by runDisney offer
Adventures by Disney is working with runDisney to offer a Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend Tour Package. Like a similar tour created for this November's inaugural Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend, the “Galactic Experience” features an exclusive version of the Adventures by Disney “Southern California: Disney Backstage” guided tour specifically designed for runners.
This version of the six-day Disney Backstage itinerary includes tours of the the Jim Henson Company and Walt Disney Imagineering, along with a tour of Hollywood and a visit to the El Capitan Theater. This version does not include a visit to the Walt Disney Studios or Archives as do some other Disney Backstage tours. The tour concludes with a two-day VIP tour experience at the Disneyland Resort, and features a visit to Walt Disney's apartment above the Disneyland Fire House.
The special runDisney version of the trip adds a seventh day to the normal itinerary, and includes registration for the Star Wars 5K and the Rebel Challenge (10K and half marathon), plus tickets to the Wookie Welcome Party. During the tour, runDisney will host a guided run in Hollywood.
There are 40 spaces available, and Ted Bradpiece with Two Bears Travel says the package is $3670 per person, based on double occupancy. The next departure of the tour, scheduled to depart two weeks later, is $3200 per person. Considering everything included in this special package—nearly $500 in registration fees plus an extra hotel night—the runDisney package actually represents a slight savings.
For more information about this special tour, contact your travel agent, or call Adventures by Disney at (800) 543-0865.
Passholders can save 30% off rooms at Aulani
We overlooked this offer when it launched last month, but wanted to share it in case your fall vacation plans include Hawaii. Now through December 19, Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30 percent off select rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry.
Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available at an extra cost. On the high end, a 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to nine people.
The offer is valid most nights August 25 through November 25, and November 30 through December 19. To get a quote for your travel dates, contact your travel agent, visit the Disneyland annual passholder website, or call (714) 520-7001.
Club 33 progress photos
A reader alerted us that some of the construction walls had come down around the upper level of the new Club 33 expansion over the French Market this weekend, and asked if we could share some photos. High noon was probably not the best time to try to take the photos, and it doesn't help that shade panels covering the French Market seating area prevent a direct view between the new section of the Club and the ground-level patio, but here are a few images to show the scope of the expansion.

The new section of Club 33 sits atop the French Market restaurant, just as the original dining room is above Cafe Orleans. A new bridge over Orleans street (MouseAdventure players know that all of the New Orleans Square walkways have street names) connects the old and new “wings” of the Club.

The small windows all around the new section have matching stained glass panels, with a larger window looking out onto the French Market seating area boasting a larger design.

Members have been invited to a tasting event to preview the new menu on June 21, and the Club is expected to reopen by Disneyland's anniversary on July 17.
Quick bites
…Fantasyland locations, including the Village Haus, are selling a travel mug to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “it's a small world.” The mug is $6.29, and comes with a hot or cold beverage at the time of purchase. The Ariel souvenir sipper, $6.99, is offered when the Frozen version featuring Olaf is sold out.

…Readers asked me to report when the Star Wars souvenirs released during the 24-hour party were back in stock at Disneyland, and some wanted better photos that the blurry nighttime camera phone shots we ran two weeks ago. All three items—Stormtrooper mug, Darth Vader popcorn bucket, and Death Star glow sphere—were available in Tomorrowland this weekend.
The Stormtrooper cup is offered at the Tomorrowland lemonade cart, and also at Tomorrowland Terrace. The Death Star glow sphere is only sold at the lemonade cart. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

…Some of the specialty food items created for the 24-hour party are still available at Disney California Adventure, including a beef and cheddar sandwich at Flo's V8 Cafe, and the s'mores ice cream bar at Clarabelle's. Unfortunately, the apple-berry flatbread from Village Haus did not make the cut, and a chef at the location says the item probably won't return this summer as originally hoped.
…The Carthay Circle Restaurant has made some minor changes to its current spring menu, but look for the new summer menu to debut the first week of July.
This and that…
…Grad Nite events are scheduled this Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, June 10, 11, 13 and 14. Refer to our May 12 Park Update for information about how Grad Nite events may impact your visit on these days.
…A refurbishment for Captain EO has been added to the Disneyland calendar, with the show closed June 18 through July 3. The Magic Eye Theater is scheduled to reopen July 4.
…Another phase of the room-by-room refurbishment of the World of Disney store has ended, and the former “Villains” room has reopened with a new look. Disney removed the oversized Ursula display case and alligator shelves during an earlier remodel of the room, and this latest update eliminated the Villain-arm wall sculptures that decorated the room since 2001. The room's two cash register counters were combined along one wall, and smaller displays and fixtures should provide more flexibility when merchandising new collections.

…The Disney Parks blog announced last week that the 45th anniversary of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion has inspired the Disney Theme Parks Merchandise designers to create a collection of nearly 100 Mansion-inspired items to be sold this fall at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Take a look at the blog for some very preliminary concept art.
…The Disneyland Resort's social media team is planning a summer of surprises, with a new one announced each Monday through Labor Day. The Disney Parks blog was vague about the details of this promotion, urging fans to follow all of its social media venues, including the Disneyland Facebook page, the Disneyland Twitter account, the Disneyland Today Facebook page, and the Disneyland Today Twitter account, as well as to check the Disney Parks blog to be notified about the weekly surprises.
…President Obama is scheduled to give a commencement address at Anaheim Stadium this Saturday, June 14. While this is not a Disney event. visitors planning to visit Disneyland that day should leave extra travel time to get through Orange County due to expected heavy traffic as a result of this presidential appearance.
…Southern California residents who have a Disney Visa Rewards card should check their e-mail for a coupon valid at the newly renovated Disney Store in the Brea Mall. The coupon is valid through June 26.
Customers can add a Mickey Mouse backpack or watch to their Disneyland Resort purchase. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Current offers:
- Disneyland Mickey Mouse Backpack for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more.
- Disneyland Mickey Mouse Watch for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more.
Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Question of the Week
Reader anjelah is trying to decide between three Anaheim-area hotels, and seeks your advice:
We are heading to Disneyland in July. We'd love some advice. Our main criteria is a clean room. I currently have a great rate at the Hilton Anaheim. I've read that it's quite a walk and the elevators can take a while.
We are also considering Hojos or the Castle Inn. Hilton is our cheapest choice. Is Hojos worth $150 a night? Is the Castle Inn clean? We will be staying four nights so we need a clean room. It would be nice to take a break in the afternoon so closer would be great. Any advice would really help us.
Have you recently stayed at one of these hotels? Come share your experience on our MousePad forum.
Do you have questions about an upcoming Disneyland visit, or need help choosing a hotel, restaurant or activity? Post your questions on our Disneyland Resort Trip Planning forum to get advice from our readers and Community Leaders. Your question may even be featured here in an upcoming Update.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Annual Passholder early registration opens August 6, 2014. General registration opens August 12, 2014. More information at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them. |

Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
