Disneyland's 59th anniversary
The countdown to Disneyland's 60th anniversary begins this week, as Disneyland celebrates the 59th anniverary this Thursday, July 17. An “anniversary moment” is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in Town Square, with Walt Disney's park dedication speech broadcast on Main Street, U.S.A.

As we previously reported, Disney Parks Blog is hosting a meetup on July 17 for 100 fans selected in June. The event commemorates Disneyland's 59th anniversary, with a nod to the 60th celebration.
Disneyland also marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Splash Mountain this week. Disneyland Resort annual passholders can pick up a miniature 25th anniversary attraction poster when they visit Splash Mountain this Wednesday to Friday, July 16–18. Supplies are limited.

Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush
Disneyland's new interactive experience, Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush, began last week, providing park patrons with a completely new way to participate in the “show” of a Disney theme park. The company calls this an “immersive game,” and has built quite an infrastructure in Frontierland to support the new venture.
At the highest level, Legends of Frontierland is a strategy board game, with Frontierland as the board. Players side either with the citizens of Frontierland or of Rainbow Ridge in a land battle, and work to earn points and buy land for their side. The team that acquires the most land by the end of the day “wins” bragging rights until the next day, when the battle begins anew.

It's easy—if not exactly intuitive—to join the game. After searching Frontierland for a “start here” sign of some form, I finally stopped a passing cast member and asked where I needed to go to sign up. She told me to visit any of the five staffed game locations for help. I went to the Golden Horseshoe, where a friendly cast member helped me create a western nickname. I opted to join the Rainbow Ridge delegation, and received a name badge sticker that would identify me to other members of my new team.
The cast member handed me a flyer that contained a Frontierland map and explained a little about the game. She suggested that I head to the telegraph office to see if they had any jobs that needed doing.

The telegraph office turned out to be a popular spot, and it took a while to reach the counter. Once there, the clerk handed me a slip of paper printed with a message written in Morse code. She also provided a pen and decoder card, and asked me to decode the message. While I worked on my puzzle, other players came and went, some delivering messages, some looking for messages to deliver, and others tasked with decoding more telegrams.
After I decoded my message, the clerk gave me a wooden coin, known as a “bit” in this game, and suggested that I go play cards in the Golden Horseshoe to try and earn more bits. Each wooden coin is worth 5 bits, and it take a minimum of 100 to purchase a parcel of land for your team. Inside the Golden Horseshoe, I found a game of High Card in progress. High Card is a version of War, and ties are settled—as are all disputes in Frontierland—by playing rock, paper, scissors. Players ante one bit per round, and winner takes all.

After losing my initial stake to a table of impossibly lucky pre-teens, I walked over to the Golden Horseshoe bar to check out the new “hidden” menu. The menu features four flavored root beers: Wild style (with raspberry flavor); Campfire style (with marshmallow flavor); Plain Jane style (with vanilla flavor); and Eureka style (with caramel flavor). If you don't care for root beer, you can substitute Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta orange or light lemonade. The 16-ounce drinks are $3.89 each, quite a premium when compared to $3.19 for a 22-ounce drink without the added flavoring.

Three Golden Horseshoe menu items are now available “Outlaw Style.” For an extra $1.30, you can have your chili cheese fries, chili bread bowl, or chicken salad topped with an “aromatic mixture of black beans; roasted white corn; red onion; Serrano chillies; tomato; green, red and yellow peppers; garlic; cilantro; Tabasco; olive oil and lime.”

Later this week, L.B.'s Extraordinary Elixers will roll into Frontierland, and will sell a specialty beverage that bestows additional game powers.
I sipped my Wild Style Diet Coke and walked back to the telegraph office, where a land auction was about to start. A Frontierland cast member managed the auction, but picked a guest player with the nickname of “Nugget” to be the auctioneer. The bidding quickly went beyond my means, but one group of players pooled their funds to win the auction for their team.
As they settled with Nugget, I noticed another player carrying a handful of pyrite, and asked how he'd earned it. “The sheriff's office pays the most,” he explained, so I wandered back outside to see if I could pick up an odd job. A series of “Wanted” posters adorned the wall, each with the name and crayon portrait of another player in the game, along with their alleged crime. I learned that any player could pay a five-bit fee to create a wanted poster of any other player they felt had broken the law.
If the suspect is apprehended and brought to the jail, the captor and the bandit play a game of rock, paper, scissors to settle the dispute. If the captor wins, the suspect goes to jail and the captor receives a bounty of 100 bits. If the suspect wins, they receive the bits and are free to leave, but their poster goes back on the sheriff's office wall. The next time they are brought in, the bounty increases.

I was beginning to get into the spirit of the game, so I put my five bits on the barrel and created a wanted poster for one Mr. Nugget. The charge: Conducting an auction without a license. Then I had to find Nugget and bring him to justice. Mind you, I'd never even seen this person before that day and felt somewhat awkward including him in my made-up scenario. He seemed to be even more into the game and went willingly to the sheriff's office, trailed by a camera-toting wife and two giggling daughters. I won the rock, paper, scissors match, sending Nugget to jail and earning 100 bits for myself.
After giving my extra coins to Nugget for bail, I ventured to the Trading Post to purchase a parcel of land. The cast member asked me to name my newly claimed square of the map, and recorded “Hedgehog Row” on both the map itself and an Agreement of Land Lease document that she presented to me, with instructions to take it to the Golden Horseshoe to be notarized.
Walking back through Frontierland, I learned that Nugget made bail, and had in fact helped negotiate a peace treaty between the people of Frontierland and the people of Rainbow Ridge. Players packed the Golden Horseshoe as the terms of the treaty were read, and the negotiators drank shots of “river water” (tart grape and lemon juices) to seal the deal.

I read a sign posted near the Trading Post while I was waiting there to buy my land, and learned that there were many other elements to the game, including claim jumping, intercepting stagecoaches, buying town buildings, and even forming bandit gangs to steal already claimed land. Players who want to devote a lot of time and effort can get very involved in the game, working up through status levels to become Protectors, Heroes, or even Legends. I noticed a small group of players were dressed in Western outfits, and a cast member said some guests had really gotten into their roles.

Even as a casual player, I put someone in jail, claimed a parcel of land, bought a wildly overpriced drink and was shocked to realize I had been in Frontierland for more than two hours. This isn't a game I'd play during every trip to Disneyland, but I'm certainly looking forward to gathering some friends and figuring out how to intercept a stagecoach during a future visit.
Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush operates daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is free with park admission. There is no minimum age to participate, though very young children will likely find the game concepts confusing or boring.

The 2014 Disneyana Collectible Expo, an annual event hosted by the Disneyana Fan Club, is this Sunday, July 20, at the Wyndham Anaheim Hotel at 12021 Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove. DisneyanaMania 2014 Convention attendees can enter at 9:00 a.m.; Disneyana Fan Club Members may enter at 10:00 a.m.; and doors open to the general public at 11:00 a.m. The Expo runs until 5:00 p.m.

…Tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland go on sale this Wednesday, July 16, for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders. The general public can buy tickets starting July 30. Tickets will be available for purchase online and at Disneyland Resort ticket booths.
…Downtown Disney hosts a beach volleyball exhibition and tournament this week, July 16–20. A sand court has been constructed between the AMC theater and the ESPN Zone.

…La Mascarade d'Orleans is open in New Orleans Square. Construction walls are still in place around the new entrance around Club 33, but are expected to be removed Tuesday night before member previews take place on July 16. Club 33 officially reopens Friday, July 18.

- Mickey's Halloween Party – September 26, 30; October 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17, 20, 22, 24, 27, 29, 31. Tickets go on sale via Disneyland.com July 16 to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, Disney Rewards Visa card holders and Disney Vacation Club members, and on July 30 to the general public.
- Gay Days at Disneyland – October 3–5. (Unofficial event) Details on the event website.

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 16–17. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

2015
- Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 15–18, 2015. This new event weekend includes 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Wookie Welcome party. All running events sold out within hours of registration. Details at the runDisney website.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Annual Passholder early registration opens Wednesday, August 6. General registration opens Tuesday, August 12. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out April 13, 2014 through April 20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
