Disneyland's diamond anniversary announcement disappoints
Several weeks ago the Disney Parks Blog announced a July 17 meetup to celebrate Disneyland's 59th anniversary and give 100 fans a sneak peek at some of the plans for next year's 60th celebration. We expected this event—seemingly the first public acknowledgement of Disneyland's diamond anniversary—to confirm or squelch rumors about a 60-hour party, a new mini-parade, and additional attraction overhauls a la Alice in Wonderland.

Instead, attendees were treated to a front-row seat as Disneyland unveiled the diamond anniversary logo, and then were ushered to the Main Street Opera House for snacks and photo opportunities with Disney characters. Meanwhile, everyone else who had kept an eager watch on the Disney Parks Blog and official social media accounts for updates from the event started to question why the company wasn't sharing beyond the logo.
As it turns out, the logo was pretty much the extent of the “announcements” made that day, although one reader who attended the Disney Parks Blog event said a Disney manager told some guests that the 60-hour party was definitely not happening. Even the official announcement of the 60th anniversary posted by the Disney Parks Blog contained little more than the celebration's name, logo, and link to an anniversary contest.
This doesn't mean the park doesn't have plans for the 60th, but a cast member tells MousePlanet that it's unlikely we'll hear any official announcements for a few more weeks, until funding for the 60th anniversary initiatives is finalized.
The 60th anniversary celebration is set to begin sometime in Spring 2015.
Disneyland 60 Years Contest
While very little is known about Disneyland's 60th anniversary celebration, the company is hosting a contest to give one grand prize winner and up to three companions a trip to experience the celebration in person. U.S. residents age 18 and older can enter the Disneyland 60 Years Contest by posting to Twitter or Instagram “a photograph that represents the Entrant’s beloved, favorite, or best Disneyland memory, a description that indicates the year the photograph was taken, and the hashtag '#Disneyland60Contest'.”
Photos must be submitted by August 27, 2014 to be considered for the public voting phase. Starting September 11 and continuing each week through October 16, a weekly public vote will determine the finalist for each decade, and the public will vote for a grand prize winner from the six finalist photos.
The grand prize winner receives a four-day Disneyland Resort vacation, including airfare, theme park tickets, hotel accomodations, and ground transfers. The finalists will receive a Disneyland anniversary merchandise prize pack.
As is often the case when photographs and social media are involved, this contest has quite a number of terms, conditions, restrictions, and requirements. Be sure to read the official rules before you enter.
Disneyland hosts music of Nashville
Local country group The Kelly Rae Band headlines a new series of concerts that began this weekend at the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree. The weekend concerts feature songs from the ABC television series Nashville, and other “contemporary country hits.”
Performances are every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through September 1e:
- Fridays: 1:15 p.m.; 2:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- Saturday and Sundays: 2:15 p.m.; 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Concerts are free with park admission.
Club 33 reopens
Club 33, Disneyland's private membership club, reopened in New Orleans Square last week, along with Salon Nouveau, the club's new lounge above the French Market restaurant. We plan to share photos from inside Club 33 and Salon Nouveau in the near future, thanks to a MousePlanet reader who is a Club 33 member.

While the club's dining room and lounge have reopened, related construction work continues througout New Orleans Square. The expansion of Club 33 included widening one pedestrian bridge above the streets of New Orleans Square and building a brand new bridge, and work is not yet complete on the exterior elements of these additions.

Many elements of the Club 33 expansion project have angered some Disney fans, including the addition of the new bridge (which MousePlanet's own David Koenig wrote about before construction began), the changes to New Orleans Square storefronts, and the closure of the Court des Anges to create the club's new waiting area.

Legends of Frontierland expands; Adventure Trading Company game to begin
Disneyland's Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush! game added a new element last week with the arrival of L.B.'s Extraordinary Elixir cart.

According to the game lore, L.B. discovered that the waters of the Rainbow Caverns inside Big Thunder Mountain have special properties, and is now selling these potions in Frontierland. Each of the elixirs, “Luck,” “Charm,” and “Knowledge,” grant special in-game powers to players of Legends of Frontierland: Gold Rush!
- The Luck elixir is supposed to help players find things, including the bits and nuggets used as currency in the game. The drink is “tea infused with apple, cotton candy, lime, lemongrass and mint” flavorings.
- The Charm elixir is supposed to make players more persuasive in their interactions and dealings with other players. The drink is “lite lemonade infused with desert pear, blackberry and Tabasco” flavorings. I likened it to a sweetened version of the Master Cleanse diet drink.
- Players drinking the Knowledge elixer are supposed to find it easier to find clues and get information from other players. The drink is “tea infused with lime, passion fruit, vanilla and a zap of pureed ginger.”
The elixirs are not cheap, at $3 (tax included) for a 6-ounce glass. Customers are advised to sip the potions as they play, and make sure that cast members and other players can see the labels—it clearly takes the cooperation of other players for the “magical powers” to have any effect. As with the game itself, it seems that cast members and players are still learning how to incorporate the drinks into game play, and players will likely find that the elixirs have more power when dealing with a Disney cast member than with other players.
Another game will begin in Adventureland on August 1, finally bridging a concept tested at last year's D23 Expo to the parks. The Adventure Trading Company is described as “a provisions and publications company with a knack for selling goods that send the buyers on wild adventures.”
As players complete their adventures, they receive a “juju” charm. We don't have many more details about the new offering, and do not know if the quests will again involve buying specialty drinks at Trader Sams.
Disney Cruise Line raises minimum passenger age
Last week, the Disney Cruise Line announced that the minimum age to sail on a Disney Cruise Line ship is increasing from 12 weeks to six months on most cruises that sail after January 1, 2015. The minimum age for Transatlantic, Hawaii, and Panama Canal itineraries increases to 1 year of age, also effective January 1, 2015.
This policy is in effect for all new bookings made after July 18, 2014. If you booked before July 18, and have a child younger than the new minimum age for your selected itinerary, you are still allowed to sail as booked—you should receive a letter from Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent to explain the new policy and the exception made in your case.
Carolwood Pacific Historical Society receives original Mine Train attraction cars
MousePlanet readers Karin and Kenji attended the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society's 15th Anniversary Event at Walt's Barn this past Sunday, and shared an announcement with us.
Carolwood Society officers announced at the event they've been given a long-term loan from the Disney Archives of an engine and two train cars from the original Mine Train thru Nature's Wonderland attraction. They are to be refurbished and displayed at the barn when completed. There was no timeline given for the restoration work.

The Carolwood Pacific Historical Society was founded by Michael (son of Imagineer Roger) and Sharon Broggie, and named for the backyard railroad Walt Disney built at his Holmby Hills home. Walt's Barn is the actual barn from that house, relocated to Los Angeles' Griffith Park through the efforts of Walt's late daughter, Diane Disney Miller. …Tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland are still on sale for Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Visa cardholders. The general public can buy tickets starting July 30. Tickets will be available for purchase online and at Disneyland Resort ticket booths. None of the event dates have yet sold out.
Reader JiminysCrickets noticed new wording on the website when he went to purchase tickets last week. As stated on the website, “Item(s) are priced for Passholders only. For each ticket or pass purchased at the Passholder price, you must show a valid Passholder ID at the park entrance.”
JiminysCrickets had intended to purchase tickets for himself (a passholder) and for members of his extended family who are not passholders. He wanted to know whether he could purchase discounted tickets for his entire group at once, as has been the case in past years, or whether he would have to wait for public sales to begin to purchase non-discounted tickets for the non-passholders in his family. He contacted Disney for clarification, and recieved an email reply, “As long as one member of your party has an annual pass, you're fine.”
MousePlanet has also confirmed with Disney that annual passholdes may purchase discounted tickets for non-passholders in the party. As with other Passholder and SoCal resident offers, the person eligible for the discount must enter the park with the party using the discounted tickets, and may be required to show identification. Annual passholdes may also purchase up to 10 tickets per transaction online.
We also wanted to note that Disney removed the annual passholder discount for the Monday, October 27 event. Tickets are now $63 when purchased in advance, or $70 (if available) the day of the event. Here is the updated calendar and price schedule.

…Los Angeles-area television station KTLA is hosting a contest to win an overnight stay in the Haunted Mansion. The grand prize includes 3-day, 1-park tickets for the winner and their family or “team” of up to three additional people, the overnight stay in the Haunted Mansion, and one additional night in a Disneyland Resort hotel.

To enter, visit the KTLA contest website and complete the online application, which includes submitting a 50-word essay and a uploading photo of your family or team. All members of the party must be 10 years or older, and at least one person must be 21 years or older. Entries must be received by 11:59:59 p.m. on July 27, 2014. Contestants must reside in the Los Angeles media market, and all members of the finalist teams must be willing to participate in a Finalist Competition event at Disneyland on August 4, 2014.

…David Koenig reports that Disneyland's Club 55 lost another member earlier this year:
I just learned that longtime Disneyland Operations and Merchandise manager Jack Taylor passed away in April at the age of 87.
A native of Carl Junction, Mo., Jack started on Opening Day on the pre-Storybook canal boats. He was promoted to foreman of the Jungle Cruise in 1956, moved to Holidayland two years later, and would eventually work most every area of the park.
Jack’s favorite memory was of rigging a Jungle boat with fluorescent lights and taking Walt out on a night-time test run. I like it!” Walt enthused. “Let’s go with it on all the boats!”
My favorite story, as told by Jack: “One summer on the Submarine attraction, there was a sudden summer storm, with thunder, lightining and rain. Then came a big loud thunderclap, and a little kid looked up at his mother and quivered. ‘Mommy, how did THEY DO THAT?’”
Club 55—Disneyland cast members who worked for Disneyland for at least its first 10 years—now number no more than 15, ranging from 71-year-old Tom Nabbe to 92-year-old George Short.

We are planning a trip with our family of 5 plus extended family for June 2015. This will be about our 10th trip but will have been 3 yrs since our last. Seems like hotel rates have gone up SO much! We've typically stayed at Hojo.
So I've been looking at houses on [Vacation Rentals by Owner]. We've used VRBO before. Just wondering if anyone has rented a house they could recommend and if it was truly walking distance? We don't rent a car typically.

Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.

2015
- Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 15–18, 2015. This new event weekend includes 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Wookie Welcome party. All running events sold out within hours of registration. Details at the runDisney website.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Annual Passholder early registration opens Wednesday, August 6. General registration opens Tuesday, August 12. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
