Private club, public reaction
The reopening of the newly expanded Club 33 has sparked quite a lot of online discussion among Disney fans, especially in the more acerbic corners of the Twitterverse. This may be partly due to this being an otherwise slow period in the Disney parks news cycle—not much happens in the height of the summer tourism season. Still, there is quite a lot of public outrage over the workings of a private club, and I thought I'd add my thoughts to the discussion.
I had the opportunity to visit both Club 33 and Le Salon Nouveau (the new lounge that is part of the club) this past week, and got a first-hand look at the expansion and renovation. These photos don't really do the expansion justice; it's difficult to capture the atmosphere of a place on film (or in pixels, as it were). During my visits, I thought about all the complaints I'd read about the expansion—for the most part, I think the hyperbole is quite overblown. There are, however, a few things I agree with:
…Yes, it's too bad that they closed the Court of Angels to the public.
The conversion of the Court of Angels from a quaint public nook of Disneyland to a waiting area for a private restaurant is unfortunate for the handful of people a day who intentionally visited that area.
The area, however, has special meaning for a number of my own friends—people who were either engaged in the courtyard, or who took their family portraits on the steps every year for the Christmas cards they sent to their friends. I'm not dismissing the sense of loss some people feel over this change, but the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. Disneyland has used the Court of Angels as a character meet-and-greet, a merchandise location, even a food service location. It was only a matter of time before one department or another permanently claimed the space for their exclusive use. The good news is that the Court of Angels looks much the same as it did before the refurbishment, down to the very same crack in the Court des Anges sign that hangs along the staircase.
The Court of Angels is now a waiting area for Club 33 guests. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
However, I did think of a way Disneyland could accommodate those who want to visit the courtyard: Open it to the public each morning before Club 33 opens for the day. There's really no reason the courtyard gates cannot be opened with the park each morning, and closed at 11:00 a.m. when the club opens. That would allow at least an hour on most days for people to visit the courtyard. Disney could even station a PhotoPass photographer in the courtyard during the holidays to take professional family photos.
…Yes, that window really is off-center
During a visit this weekend, I stood two friends, long-time annual passholders, in front of the new Club 33 window, and asked them to tell me what they saw. They noticed that the trees had been cut back, spotted people on the Club 33 balcony, and even noted the new chandelier visible through the window—but it took about three minutes before one said, “Oh, that window's off-center!” Viewed from inside the club, the window is perfectly centered to the dining room. But from the outside, it's about 18 inches too far to one side.
The new window from Club 33's dining room is perfectly centered to the interior of the restaurant, but off-center when viewed from below. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
It's one of those things that, once seen, can never been unseen. I'll never look at the Cafe Orleans facade again without noticing that window is off. Even so, I don't think 99 percent of park visitors who even look up would notice it. I've been told that exterior work on the club isn't finished, so I hope the designers find a way to disguise the placement.
…And yes, that's it. Two concerns about the expansion. I can't bring myself to be overwrought by the decision to reuse the club's original French lift in the new seating area. There was no way to make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and it seems to me to make more sense to keep it in use at the club, among members who have current memories of it, than to send it off to a museum. I don't have a problem with day guests being able to see into the expanded walkway to the club dining room—it's no different than seeing club guests standing outside on the balconies. I don't think the new bridge is awful, and the walkways of New Orleans Square seem as sunny as ever.

This is just one writer's view, and not even shared by everyone here at MousePlanet. David Koenig definitely disagrees with me, as do many readers. I'd love to hear your views—join the discussion on our MousePad forum.
New Disneyland Military ticket and hotel offers
Last week, Disney Parks Blog announced new military discounts for the Disneyland Resort.
The Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket is $132, and is valid September 28, 2014, through October 3, 2015. The tickets are available only from participating military sales outlets. It's interesting to note that Disney states “The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.” If you spot this offer at a lower price, please be sure to let us know so we can share it with other military readers.
The ticket is blocked out December 22, 2014 to January 2, 2015 and March 29 to April 9, 2015, which gives you a good idea of what Disneyland expects to be the peak spring break period in 2015. These tickets do not include Magic Morning entry.
The ticket is available to active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves) or their spouses. The Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse may buy one ticket for themselves, and up to five additional tickets for family and friends at this price. The terms and conditions state that the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse must use one of the tickets. Based on enforcement of past military offers, this means that the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse must be present when the tickets are first used for admission, and will likely be required to present military ID. The Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse is not required to be present upon reentry or park hopping, or for the second or third day of use.
Disneyland also has special military rates at the three resort hotels, valid now through October 3, 2015 with the exception of:
- November 27–29, 2014
- December 24–31, 2014
- March 30, 2015 through April 4, 2015
In a nice change from the 2013–2014 offer, this ticket is not blocked out on July 4.
There are very few specifics available on the Disney website devoted to this offer. Call (714) 520-7088 to check rates and make reservations.
New Mansion merchandise may scare your wallet
I've been writing about Disney theme park merchandise for almost 15 years, and the recent collections coming out of the Disney Design Group artists include some of the best products I've ever seen. In a Disney Parks Blog posting last week, Walt Disney World merchandise communications manager Steven Miller gave a preview of some of the more than 100 new Haunted Mansion products to be released this fall at both the Florida and California resorts.
A small portion of the new products are included in a Haunted Mansion 45th anniversary product release and signing event at Disneyland on Saturday, August 16. The signing event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Disney Gallery on Main Street. Artists scheduled to appear include Steve Adams, Dave Avanzino, David Bird, Britni Brault, Brian Crosby, Jeremy Fulton, Brian Kesinger, Daniel Killen, Bridget McCarty, Miss Mindy, Mike Peraza, Javier Soto, and Yakovetic
You can see all of the merchandise to be released at the event on the Disney Gallery website. If you cannot attend the event in person, you can order some of the merchandise online beginning August 16, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. (PDT), again via the Disney Gallery website.
Disney is releasing the rest of the merchandise later this fall. Some of the product will likely just appear in the stores without warning. but we hope to get updates from Disney once dates and locations are finalized for the larger product releases, like the new Dooney & Bourke collection. Some items will also be sold via the Disney Store website.

…Tickets for Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland go on sale to the July 30 for purchase online and at Disneyland Resort ticket booths. None of the event dates have yet sold out (from advanced sales for annual passholders, etc.).
Disney has changed the annual passholder discounts for two dates since we first published this chart, so here is the most updated information. As a reminder, annual passholders may purchase up to 10 tickets per transaction online, but are limited to eight tickets if purchased in person at a ticket booth.

…Disneyland's Music of Nashville concert series continues through September 1 in the Big Thunder Ranch. The show features local country group The Kelly Rae Band performing songs from the ABC television series Nashville, and other “contemporary country hits.” While the shows attract a small collection of visitors seeking live entertainment, or just a little relief from the summer sun, very few fans of the show were in attendance when I stopped by Sunday. When the lead singer asked how many in the audience were fans of the show, just two people raised their hands. “That's OK, we'll make you fans by the end of our show,” she said, and gamely continued the performance.
Disney has the usual Big Thunder Ranch food set up open during the performances, and Nashville CDs and DVDs are available for purchase. A photo backdrop with cardboard cutouts of the characters is available for photo opportunities, and Disney characters make limited appearances between show times.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Annual Passholder early registration opens Wednesday, August 6. General registration opens Tuesday, August 12. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
