Halloween creeps into the dog days of summer
These last few weeks of summer can feel like they last forever. While most local schools are back in session, the parks still felt quite busy last week. Vacation attendance should drop this week, but the return of the annual passholders after the summer blockout period may more than make up for it. Expect higher passholder attendance all week as Southern California Select, Southern California and Deluxe annual passholders return to the parks.
- Today (Monday) is the first day since the summer blockouts began that SoCal Select and SoCal passports are valid.
- Saturday, August 23, is the first Saturday that Deluxe passports are valid.
- Sunday, August 24, is the first Sunday that SoCal passports are valid.
Deluxe and SoCal passes are blocked out again the following Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31, for the Labor Day holiday, but all annual passes are valid on Labor Day, Monday, September 1.
Halloween arrives early at many Disneyland Resort stores. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Though Halloween Time is almost a month away, Disneyland Resort stores have already made the switch, filling the most visible retail real estate with costumes and pumpkins. The elusive Elsa dress is still only found in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, so parents on a quest for the “it” costume of 2014 should check that location each visit.
Disneyana debuted a new Ghostly Materials exhibit this weekend to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion. Saturday's product release and artist signing was extremely popular, and most of the limited edition items sold out during the first few hours. As usual, Disney did not have the entire stock of the items on hand for the event—cast members encourage customers to check back in a day or so as items are restocked.

While this is the 45th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland, some of the merchandise released for the event is based on the Walt Disney World version, like this set of bust figurines. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
While the higher-end collectibles were flying off Main Street shelves, the New Orleans Square shops were loading up on Haunted Mansion apparel. Over a dozen new shirt and sweatshirt designs materialized this past week—we invite you to visit our Facebook page to see photos of most of the new arrivals.

Select passholders invited to “Fall Back” event
If your Disneyland Resort annual passport expires between October 1 and December 5, 2014, be on the lookout for an invitation to a special annual passholder event at Disney California Adventure. Targeted at passholders with soon-to-expire passes, and event is the third renewal event in a series designed to improve passholder renewal and retention rates in a year where there's very little new happening at the Disneyland Resort.
The after-hours event on Tuesday, September 2, has a retro theme, and passholders are encouraged to wear “dapper duds from the 1940s through the throwback threads of the 1980s.” The “special offerings, surprises and experiences” for this event include an '80s band in Paradise Pier, a '40s dance party with a live swing band, and character meet-and-greet opportunities.
If your pass expires during the target window, visit the Annual Passholder website starting August 20 at 10 .m. Pacific to register for the event. Eligible passholders can invite up to five annual passholder guests regardless of whether the guests' passes expire during the same October 1 through December 5 window. Be prepared with the names and pass numbers of your guests, as you'll likely need to provide those while registrationing. Registration closes Saturday, August 30, 2014.
If you're planning to attend the event and want to meet up with other MousePlanet readers, be sure to visit our MousePad discussion forum and introduce yourself.
Refurbishment update
As the post-Labor Day refurbishment season nears and budgets are finalized for the 2015 fiscal year, Disney is making adjustments to the posted refurbishment schedule. Major changes from last week including a move of the Captain EO refurbishment, originally planned to take place this weekend, to September 12–25; the addition of a three-day refurbishment of the Matterhorn Bobsleds September 22–24 ; and a one-day closure of Mickey's Toontown house on September 15.
These schedules are still subject to change, so keep checking back if you plan to visit during the next six weeks. While HalloweenTime officially begins September 12, the peak fall refurbishment season generally continues until the end of September, with most attractions reopen during the busier October season.

Enjoy a VIP trip to Disneyland and support CHOC Childrens
Our friends over at Children's Hospital Orange County asked us to share a special opportunity to experience a VIP trip to Disneyland while helping to support Orange County's only children's hospital.
The Disneyland Resort has donated a VIP package for four people that is certain to be unlike any visit you've ever experienced.
The visit begins with an overnight stay for you and three guests in one of the beautiful signature theme suites of the Disneyland Hotel. Is your family more of an Adventureland crew, or would you prefer the over-the-top excitement of the Pirates of the Caribbean suite? Maybe you'd prefer the Wildest Room in the Wilderness with a stay in the Big Thunder Suite, or an evening of royal luxury in the Fairy Tale suite? The choice is yours, and there's really no way to go wrong with rooms like these.
Once you can manage to pry yourself out of your incredible suite, you'll have four one-day park hopper tickets and the use of a VIP tour guide for eight hours to spend your day touring Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. Your guide will assist in planning a magical day, including making dining reservations and arranging for priority viewing for parades and spectacular, along with some magical extra surprises.
One tour package is available, and it can be yours with a donation of $5,000 or more to CHOC Children's. Meals and concessions are not included, and accommodation are based on availability. Restrictions may apply, and tax and gratuity not included.
For more information, please contact Zach Abrams, Director Special Events and Corporate Relations CHOC Children's Hospital, by email to zabrams@choc.org, or by phone at (714) 509-8690.

This and that…
…Registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon, Pixie Dust Challenge (the Tinker Bell 10K and half-marathon combined) and Never Land Family Fun Run 5K are all still open as of press time, putting sales of this race well behind other runDisney events and even the previous years of the Tinker Bell race. Many put the blame on the decision to move the Tinker Bell half-marathon to Mother's Day Sunday, noting that only the 10K and runDisney kids races, both of which will be held on Saturday,, have sold out. The Never Land Family Fun Run 5K event is scheduled for a Friday, making it difficult for families with school age children to participate.
Some also point to the early start of registration for the late Spring 2015 event as a possible reason for the sluggish sales, noting that runDisney has also just recently sold registrations for the brand-new Avengers and Star Wars weekend events. Get more details about the races and register at the runDisney website.

…With the focus on all things Frozen, I forgot to mention a new purchase-with-purchase offer at the Disneyland Resort. This Frozen lithograph, designed exclusively for the Disney parks, is available for $14.95 with a $25 purchase at participating Disneyland Resort shops. Walt Disney World readers have noted that the same poster is available in Florida for $19.95 with a qualifying purchase. The poster is accented with glitter snowflakes and is said to be a limited edition, although no edition size is stated on the print.

…There are just two weeks left to participate in the Legends of Frontierland interactive game at Disneyland, which is slated to end Monday, September 1.
…The Disney Parks Blog announced last week that Pandora jewelry has designed an exclusive collection that will be released at the Disney parks this fall. Pandora has also signed on to sponsor the Wishes fireworks show in Walt Disney World, and will be the presenting sponsor of the 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend at the Disneyland Resort.
…If Pandora charms aren't quite your style, Alex and Ani has released new Nightmare Before Christmas designs at the Disneyland Resort. A Frozen bracelet will be released on Monday, September 8. Alex and Ani bracelets are sold at:
- Elias & Co. in Disney California Adventure
- New Century Timepieces in Disneyland
- World of Disney store in Downtown Disney
Selected styles are also sold on the Disney Store website, though the selection varies and the site is currently sold out of the Nightmare styles.
…Tickets are still available for all dates of Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland. None of the event dates have yet sold out. Purchase tickets online and at Disneyland Resort ticket booths.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. - Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015. (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Space still available on many events. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). 2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out December 19–31, 2013; April 13–20, 2014; and July 4, 2014. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
