2014 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend draws over 35,000 runners to Anaheim
The 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend events drew over 20,000 runners to the Disneyland Resort for a series of events that included a 3.1-mile 5K family fun run, 6.2-mile 10K fun run, 13.1-mile half-marathon, runDisney kids races, and the Dumbo Double Dare challenge.

Flagstaff, Arizona resident Nick Arciniaga (31), was the first to finish the half-marathon, with a time of 1:07:48. Earlier this year, Arciniaga took seventh overall in the Boston Marathon.

Not only was Jennifer Berry (33) from Denver, Colorado, the women's winner of half-marathon on Sunday (with a finish time of 1:23:33), but she was also the first female finisher for Saturday's 10K (with a finish time of 38:20), making her the women's winner of the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge.

After the crowding and confusion of the 2013 race expo, most runners agreed that runDisney and the race operators did a fantastic job in making changes to improve the experience in 2014. The whole expo seemed much better organized this year with changes that included offering more pre-sale opportunities for commemorative merchandise, adding more space in the official merchandise area by moving the checkout lanes to an adjacent room, and using a virtual queue system to manage sales of Disney-exclusive New Balance shoes.
Team MousePlanet volunteers hands out over 55 pounds of candy, 250 pounds of orange wedges, and almost 2,000 ice-water sponges to 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon participants. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
If you happened to miss out on race merchandise, a selection is available for sale at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney through the end of the week. You can also purchase an “I did it” shirt at the Disney Store online, again, for a very limited time.

Disneyland redesigns mobile website; adds ticketing and reservation tools
Disney just relaunched its Disneyland.com website with a new mobile-friendly look, eTicket capability, and dining reservation tools. Instead of replacing the now-defunct Mobile Magic app, Disney redesigned its website to add mobility functionality, so that users no longer need to download a smartphone application.
Photo © Disney.
For many visitors, the most useful part of the new mobile experience will be the option to purchase and access tickets right from your phone. eTickets purchased or accessed via the mobile website can be used right at the main entrance gates, without the need to print out an eTicket at home. You can buy your tickets from your mobile device while on the tram from the parking structure, and head right to the gate, bypassing the long lines at the ticket booths. The main entrance cast member scans your ticket at the turnstile, and gives you a printed paper ticket you can use for Fastpass or reentry, just as is done now when visitors present printed eTickets.
If you plan just a little further ahead, you can also pre-pay for your parking before you reach the toll booths. The mobile website also allows you to make dining reservations from your phone. We found the process to be a bit slow when tested this weekend, but it was much faster than calling the Disney Dine Line and waiting on hold.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit coming to Disney California Adventure
After making his theme park debut in Tokyo earlier this year, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit joins Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, and Chip & Dale on Buena Vista Street starting September 14, according to the Disney Parks Blog. Disneyland annual passholders got a sneak peek at the new character Tuesday night during the “Fall Back to Fun” passholder event at Disney California Adventure.
While Disney is publicizing the debut of Oswald, the company has made no mention about the sudden disappearance of Duffy the Disney Bear from his Disney California Adventure meet-and-greet area. We don't know if Duffy is on vacation, or gone for good.

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage reopening nears as Lagoon is refilled
Workers are slowly refilling the Submarine Lagoon as the nine-month refurbishment of Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage draws to an end. According to Disney, the lagoon holds five million gallons of water, and takes 50 hours to refill at a rate of 12,000 gallons per hour.

With California facing a serious, multi-year drought, some have questioned the environmental impact of using so much water to refill the lagoon. When Disney closed the ride in January, the water was treated by the Orange County Sanitation District and added to the local groundwater aquifer. Disney used the same method to treat the water of Paradise Bay during the World of Color construction.

Legends of Frontierland extended at Disneyland
The Disney Parks Blog announced last week that the Legends of Frontierland interactive experience has been extended at Disneyland. The blog didn't give a new end date, but we've been told the funding has been approved through Saturday, September 27 for now, with additional funding likely if the experience continues to draw crowds to the sleepy Frontierland area.

Throughout Labor Day weekend, clipboard-toting cast members were scattered throughout Frontierland, taking notes about the Legends of Frontierland players. The trading post and telegraph station boasted long lines all weekend, with over 100 people engaged in the game at any one time for much of the weekend.
Meanwhile, Disney has ended the Adventureland Trading Company experience, hosting a final JuJu challenge last Friday to distribute the remaining skull JuJu charms.
Disneyland testing new PhotoPass delivery methods
The Disneyland Resort has just completed a two-week test of a new delivery method for on-ride PhotoPass photos. During the test, riders on Splash Mountain and California Screamin' could view their ride photo at the kiosk at the ride's exit, then text their photo's serial number to a code to purchase a digital download of the photo. Participants received a return text with a link to a website where they entered their payment information and got further instructions on how to download the photo.
The cost of the digital download varied throughout the test, from $4.99 during the first few days, to an offer of a free download on the last day of the test. A cast member said digital downloads were up over 300 percent on the first day of the test, even at the highest $4.99 price, compared to sales of the $9.99 digital downloads at the photo kiosks.
Look for additional tests and changes to the PhotoPass system, as Disney works to find ways to improve delivery and increase sales. If the digital download offering succeeds, Disney could add more on-ride photo opportunities to attractions where there just isn't room to add a complete printing facility at the exit.
Get ready to assemble for the Avengers Half Marathon weekend
You may still be nursing your blisters from the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, but events for the inaugural Avengers Half Marathon Weekend will be here before you know it. runDisney has revealed the design for the inaugural 5K, 10K, and half-marathon medals.

MousePlanet reader Melissa Mayorgas, captain of Team Muscle Makers, found the USA Track and Field certification for the new course. This course begins at the Disneyland Resort and travels south and east to Garden Grove Boulevard before heading north to Angel Stadium, then west back to the Disneyland Resort. It appears that nearly two miles of the new course runs on the Santa Ana River bike trail.

Disney applies for drone use patents
Sorcerer Radio (via srsounds.com) reported last week that Disney filed for patents related to usng drones within the theme parks. Some of these patent applications are for technology already used, in a limited capacity at the parks, while others break entirely new ground.
According to the published report, Disney filed for three unmanned aerial vehicles patents:
- Aerial Display System with floating pixels
- Aerial Display System with floating projection screens
- Aerial Display System with marionettes articulated and supported by airborne devices
Sorcerer Radio reports Disney applied for three drone patterns for potential use in their theme parks. Video by dsramps.
Disney currently uses technology similar to the floating projection screens using water, as they have in Disney's Hollywood Studios' Fantasmic show. As for the other patents, Sorcerer Radio explained that Disney may use the floating-pixels concept for light shows and the marionettes technology to allow Imagineers to make marionettes move and dance in the sky.
Disney has not commented specifically on these patent applications and no one knows exactly when the technology might be implemented in the parks.
Disney Parks Mom Panel Search begins
The annual Disney Parks Moms Panel Search began yesterday, Seotember 2.
Each year, thousands of ordinary people with an extraordinary love for all things Disney Parks apply to become part of this small, official group, which answers questions submitted online from readers on everything from how to choose where to stay to the ins and outs of making Fastpass+ reservations, or which excursions are best on Disney Cruise Lines.
Applicants have from 10:00 a.m. (Eastern) September 1 to noon (Eastern) Friday, September 5 to submit their applications for consideration. While the specific process is top secret, previous applicants have shared their experiences.
After the application deadline closes, Disney screens each application and decides who will move on to the second round of screening. This may involve writing an extended response or a series of questions that might be similar to what readers may submit online. Disney narrows down the applicant pool from there and, typically, a phone interview is next.
Disney selects only a handful of people to join the Moms Panel each year.
For more information about the Disney Moms Panel and how to apply, visit its official recruiting website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
