Storming the castle

This week, work was completed on refurbishment of the drawbridge to Sleeping Beauty Castle, all dictated by the Disney lawyers to prevent the possibility of some guest ever toppling into the moat.

Originally, there were black metal chains along the sides to keep pedestrians on the bridge. Later, shields were added to close the gaps. They have now been replaced with thick wooden railings and posts, with black metal bars and chains for good measure. The additions make it virtually impossible for someone to fall though—and prevents the drawbridge from ever being raised again.

The new wooden railings have been “aged” to match the beams on the castle, but they are a stark contrast to the fresh lumber used for the new drawbridge. Perhaps Disney is relying on heavy foot traffic to naturally age the boards.

Continuing is work on the stone bridge that leads up to the drawbridge. Monday night, workers jackhammered away the seating areas in the little alcoves that line the parapet of the bridge. Safety management was afraid of guests standing up on the stone benches and losing their balance.

Next up, reported a construction worker on the project, “The parapet of the bridge itself will have railing extensions. Safety said they were about eight inches too low. To prevent guests from falling off, they must be raised. So it was either install railing extensions or build up the parapet.”
I’ve heard of guests tumbling into lagoons, rivers and canals, but never of anyone falling off the bridge.

Safety-related changes have also cropped up around the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. Scalloped metal edges have been added to the top of low metal railings that form the queue for the ride, likely designed to prevent people from climbing or sitting on the railings.

Annual Passholder sing-along events return
Disney California Adventure will host a series of Annual Passholder sing-along events in September and October, as announced on the Disneyland Passholders Facebook page. The screenings are held inside Stage 17 (next to the Muppet Theater in Hollywoodland) inside Disney California Adventure. The events and movies are:
- Monday, September 29 – The Jungle Book
- Tuesday, September 30 – The Jungle Book
- Thursday, October 2 – The Lion King
- Friday, October 3 – The Lion King
There are three show times each day:
- 1:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
- 4:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
- 7:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
Registration is already open via the event website. Hint: When you first see the event calendar, it will look like The Lion King is sold out. Change the month from September to October, and the two dates for The Lion King should appear.

Napa Rose reopens; Flo's revamps menu
Napa Rose restaurant at the Grand Californian Hotel reopened on Saturday after an extensive kitchen renovation. MousePlanet columnist Adrienne Krock enjoyed a birthday dinner during a soft-opening preview last week, and shares her thoughts and photos:
The most notable thing about the Napa Rose Renovation is: Nothing's really changed. The thing that many guests will notice the most is that they don’t notice a whole heck of a lot. Chef Sutton told the party sitting next to us at the Counter: “There's not a lot of visible change, it's all about the guts.” Talking to various kitchen staff during our dinner we heard the same comments often repeated:
- They all love the new kitchen equipment. All of the equipment works.
- The new stoves and ovens are really powerful. The staff is getting used to all this new power.
- The restaurant is open for a soft opening to adjust to learning how to cook on the equipment.

Chef Sutton mentioned to us that since the restaurant had been closed, the staff needed some time to get back their “muscle memory”. They needed to get into the ebb and flow of running the restaurant kitchen again.
Here's a short summary of some of the kitchen renovations:
They removed cheese display in front of Counter seats 1-4, on the “cold” side of the kitchen. (This is the section of the kitchen where starters, salads and such are prepared.) The display had only been used for decorative purposes for quite some time.
The Cold Side of the kitchen has a new preparation table that one chef referred to as “The Bermuda Triangle.”

The freezer that formerly sat in front of Counter seats 5-8, near the pastry/dessert station, is gone and replaced with a warming counter. The kitchen can use that space to plate dishes.

Most guests will likely notice none of these differences. Guests who regularly dine at the Chef’s Counter and have had the opportunity to study the kitchen might notice some of the changes. But overall, the renovation looks and feels like the same old Napa Rose that many of us love.

Flo's V8 Cafe in Disney California Adventure made a big menu change in the last several weeks, removing the sliced rotisserie beef, pork and turkey platters, and replacing them with sandwiches and BBQ ribs. The eatery has also streamlined the menu by pairing each entree with a specific side dish, rather than asking customers to pick two side dishes when they order. The new menu streamlines the ordering process at the expense of customer choice, but the good news is that you can substitute side dishes at no extra charge. All of the side dishes have the same a la carte price, so you can easily swap out fruit salad for cole slaw if you like.

…The potential return of Captain EO has been delayed once again, as Disney announced last week that the Magic Eye Theater is being used to present an extended preview of Big Hero 6 at Disneyland. The Big Hero 6 sneak peek opens Friday, September 26. The movie is scheduled to open November 6, so expect the sneak peek to stick around through October.
…The transformation of Studio Disney 365 into Anna and Elsa's Boutique has been rescheduled. The new Frozen-inspired boutique was to have opened on September 12. Instead, Studio Disney 365 closes today (September 22), to reopen Monday, October 6. In announcing the date change, Disney also confirmed the same age restrictions for Anna and Elsa's Boutique as the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique inside Disneyland, serving only children ages 3 to 12. Studio Disney 365, on the other hand, was open to 3 and up.

…Four dates for Mickey's Halloween Party—September 26; October 3, October 10, and October 31—are now sold out. Tickets are still available for September 30; October 6, 8, 17, 17, 20, 24, 27, and 29. Tickets are available via Disneyland.com. and at Disneyland ticket booths.
…Thanks to reader OlegC for pointing out this special offer for Disneyland annual passholders. APs have exclusive access to a Treat Station Main Street Opera House during Mickey's Halloween Party nights, where you “get to watch ongoing screenings of Halloween-themed Disney classics and enjoy a tasty treat.” All you have to do is show your event wristband and annual pass. All members of your party must have an annual pass to enter the Opera House. You can read the fine print on the AP website.
…Last week, we wrote that Disney does not confirm when the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade are filmed at Disneyland, but that a cast member source told us it will happen over Veterans Day weekend, November 7 to 9. We now have a second source who confirms this date. MousePlanet reader Jason P. wrote last week to say, “I can confirm it as my daughter is dancing in the parade.” As always, filming is subject to change without notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.

Filming is always subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.

- Candlelight Processional – December 6 and 7 (unconfirmed). Performances times and narrator(s) have not yet been announced.

- Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 15–18, 2015. This new event weekend includes 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Wookie Welcome party. All running events sold out within hours of registration. Details at the runDisney website.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015 (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Space is still available in the half marathon; all other events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10 percent off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores. Disneyland Resort dining – 10 percent off at selected Disneyland Resort restaurants, (Big Thunder Ranch, River Belle Terrace, French Market, Cocina Cucamonga, Steakhouse 55, PCH Grill and Storyteller's Café). Disneyland Resort Guided Tours – 20 percent off the “Welcome to Disneyland,” “A Walk in Walt's Footsteps,” and “Discover the Magic” guided tours. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
