Halloween Time 2014
Halloween Time has arrived at the Disneyland Resort in all of its candy-coated, pumpkin-spiced, princess-costumed glory. Here are some of the highlights and changes for the 2014 offering:

Attractions and entertainment
The Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy overlays are both back this year and in place for the spooky season, but for the newest Halloween offerings, you have to look to Frontierland. The Halloween Carnival at Big Thunder Ranch debuted a new Halloween magic show this year, taking the place of the Haunted Hillbillies performance from last year.

The Mystic Magic Show is immediately preceded by Mickey's Mask-arade, an informal processional of Disney characters in their Halloween costumes around the Big Thunder Ranch area. The Mask-arade wraps up with the opportunity for younger fans to dance with the characters, along with a pair each of witches and scarecrows, before the magic show begins.

The magic show is definitely geared to the younger set, and most of the illusions include an opportunity for a member of the audience to participate. The finale of the show (shown in the following video) includes one of the Disney characters.
Mickey's Mask-arade and the magic show are hosted by Zester the Jester, another new performer for 2014. Zester juggles and rhymes—one with more skill than the other—and seems to be the unofficial Master of Ceremonies for the carnival.
Between magic shows, Madame Beauchance performs from a small stage in front of the Conjure a Villain tent. offering to tell the fortune of those waiting in line to meet the villains.

The new performers join the existing Halloween Carnival activities, including the popular Conjure a Villain experience, pumpkin-carving demonstration, and carnival games. The Halloween Carnival and Conjure a Villain are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Schedules for the Mystic Magic Show and Mickey's Mask-arade vary daily; check the ranch for specific show times, as they are not listed in the entertainment guide distributed at the park entrance.

Elsewhere in Disneyland, the Dia de los Muertos display is back in Fronterierland, along with complimentary face or arm painting. This offering is less involved than the full-face designs available for purchase at other face painting locations around the park, but my 3-year-old companion was utterly thrilled with the design he selected during out visit.

Food and shopping
Although the expanded selection of offerings will do a trick on your wallet, foodies and collectors of Disney's souvenir food containers are in for a treat this Halloween Time. Here are just some of the special menu items and food souvenirs you'll find around the Disneyland Resort. [One reader suggested printing this list and taking it with you during your visit, as the offerings aren't well-signed, and you might not spot the one you're looking for.]

Disneyland announces holiday season dates, return of Viva Navidad
Disney announced last week the official dates of the 2014 Holidays at the Disneyland Resort season. The activities run from November 13 through January 6, 2015, and include the return of the popular Viva Navidad celebration at Disney California Adventure, as well as World of Color: Winter Dreams.
All of the traditional favorites return to Disneyland, including the Christmas Fantasy Parade, Believe… in Holiday Magic fireworks and “it's a small world” Holiday. There was no mention of the return of the Jingle Cruise for 2014, and Disney Parks Blog author Erin Glover has not replied to several questions asking about the attraction, so it appears last year's overlay may be a “one and done.”
Other activities include the return of the Winter Village and Olaf's Skating Rink in Downtown Disney.
Trader Sam's Mahaloween Luau
It may be the shortest Halloween party hosted outside of a grade school, but Disney is betting that 400 devoted tiki fans will pony up $125 each to attend one of four one-hour “Mahaloween Luau” events at the Disneyland Hotel's Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar on Monday, September 29.
According to the description on the Disney Parks Blog:
“The fun starts on the patio with appetizers and two drink tickets (beer, wine, Zombie Drink or Polynesian Punch). Move inside for live entertainment and a Disney tiki presentation by Walt Disney Imagineering. You’ll also have a chance to meet some of Disney’s concept artists and other special guests.”
In a comment on the Disney Parks Blog post, “Rich” pointed out a problem with the logistics of the event as described:
“So I'm not sure how this is going to work. Trader Sam’s only has an occupancy level of 55 people. That's not just seats; that's including standing room. How are they going to 'Move inside for live entertainment and a Disney tiki presentation by Walt Disney Imagineering.' if only half the people per hour will fit inside the Enchanted Tiki Bar?”
As of Sunday evening, the question has gone unanswered by Disney.
The event description says that guests will receive a Halloween treat in the form of a “Jungle River Cruise Expedition Bag that includes a Trader Sam panama hat, a boxed special-edition 'Mahaloween Luau' glass (with a dated stamp), a Trader Sam print on canvas, and a coupon good for 20 percent off at the adjacent Tangaroa Terrace.” Of course, participants can also purchase up to two more of the limited edition Zombie souvenir glasses at the event. Remaining inventory will be released for sale at Trader Sam's the following day.
The one-hour parties take place from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. As mentioned, tickets are $125 per person, including tax and tip. The two later seatings are now sold out, but there is availability in the two earlier events.
Disney surveys guests about Marvel characters
A reader sent a screenshot from a “very long survey” sent to them from Disney. The survey asked, “Which of the following Marvel characters would you be especially interested in experiencing in a themed land or attraction at the Disneyland Resort?” The options listed were:
- X-Men
- Fantastic 4
- Hulk
- Ant-Man
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Iron Man
- Thor
- Spider-man
- Captain America
Disneyland recently sent out a survey asking visitors their opinion on seeing Marvel characters in new rides or lands. MousePlanet photo.
The use of Marvel characters inside the Disney theme parks is subject to a long but interesting contract between Universal (then MCA, Inc.) and Marvel. Basically, Universal has the rights to use the Marvel characters in theme parks east of the Mississippi, but not west. Disneyland could build a Guardians of the Galaxy ride, but Walt Disney World could not.
There's also a bit of stickiness with Fox regarding the use of the Fantastic Four and possibly X-Men in a theme park attraction, but I best leave that legal analysis to a person who would be more familiar with the situation.
What if you were sent this survey? Which Marvel characters would you like to see at Disneyland? Join the discussion on our MousePad forum.

Question of the Week
Reader Wonder Mouse is looking for information about the new version of the Happiest Haunts tour at Disneyland.
I am just wondering if anyone has any information on this new incarnation of the [Happiest Haunts tour]? We were on it a couple of times now and the first time was very good, last year was not that great. Now that it does not go to DCA I wonder are they cutting off a lot, or what value is being added?
Did you take the new tour this weekend? Come share your review on our MousePad forum, and let other readers know if the new tour is worth the time and money.
Do you have questions about an upcoming Disneyland visit, or need help choosing a hotel, restaurant or activity? Post your questions on our Disneyland Resort Trip Planning forum to get advice from our readers and Community Leaders. Your question may even be featured here in an upcoming Update.

- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015 (Mother's Day weekend). The weekend includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Pasta in the Park party. Space is still available in the half marathon; all other events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of May 2014.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
