Of rules and railings
A friendly cast member sent us information about a change you might notice during your next trip to the Happiest Place on Earth. Disney has installed signs outside the bag check perimeter, alerting visitors to some of the theme park rules. The signs are posted near the tram and bus unloading area, as well as outside the picnic area.

According to information sent to cast members, existing rules were updated and new signs posted in an effort to make the park rules clearer and more consistent throughout all of its theme parks, addressing the following:
What changes have been made to park rules?
We've updated existing rules to make them clearer and more consistent across our parks worldwide. For example, the updated rules clarify that e-cigarettes, like traditional cigarettes, are allowed in designated smoking locations only and that adult supervision is required for children under the age of 14. We've also made the rules easier for Guests to find on our website and made a selection of them available on signs at park entry.
Why are the signs going up now?
Were posting signs at park entry to make it easier for guests to find and access the park rules. This is consistent with the practice at our international sites.
What is on the signs?
The update includes the parks existing stance prohibiting weapons, allowing e-cigarettes in designated smoking areas only, the rules regarding inappropriate attire (including objectionable tattoos), and the requirement of adult supervision for children younger than 14 at the theme parks. The updates do not change prior Disney theme park rules, but rather reflect existing rules in a more clear and consistent manner that is easier for Guests to find and accessible to Guests at theme parks.
What will happen to someone who violates any of these park rules?
Our goal is for all Guests to have a safe and enjoyable experience in Disney Parks, and whenever possible, we will attempt to guide Guests and help them adhere to these rules. However, we reserve the right to deny admission, or to require a person to leave a park, without refund, liability or compensation, if the circumstances so require.
Will Guests be allowed to smoke e-cigarettes on Disney property?
For the safety and comfort of our Guests, smoking is allowed in designated smoking locations only; this includes traditional cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes.
We note that the signs actually posted at the resort do not contain the same information detailed in the memo sent to cast members, including the specific language regarding tattoos, e-cigarettes, and parental supervision. Disney has also installed the rails along the bridge to Sleeping Beauty Castle mentioned in the past two Updates. The antique brass-tone rails raise the barrier to 42 inches, the height Disney seems to be using for all railings around water. Commenting on a photo posted last week on our Facebook page, reader Kristin Bagby seemed to agree with most commentators, saying, “It looks better than I thought it would.” Still, many ask if the changes were even necessary, and whether the lower railings really present a safety hazard.

While there have been no moat drowning deaths at Disneyland, reader Joy wrote to share her story:
Just since you said you've never heard of anyone falling off the bridge…
My son was sitting on one of the benches there, stood up and started goofing around, and poof—in a flash he was over the top and fell down into the moat. I was standing right next to him but couldn't grab him fast enough.
We were lucky. It was a bench near the edge of the water, and there was a bush growing out over the water. So the bush broke his fall. He was a bit wet but not hurt. Some random other guest leapt over the wall, picked him up, and handed him up to us. I'm not sure if any Disney employees even knew it happened.
So I'm a little sad to see the changes, and I don't think the wall needs to be higher, but those benches really weren't all that safe. I would find it hard to believe mine is the only kid who's fallen in.
With Disney's safety managers on a mission to raise the rails around all bodies of water, don't be surprised to see the fences around the Rivers of America grow taller in the coming months.
Haunt Your Disney Side contest
Disney has announced a new contest that should thrill Halloween fans. The Haunt Your Disney Side contest asks fans to share photos of Disney-themed Halloween food and decor, for an opportunity to win a five-day Walt Disney World vacation. The prize trip includes a private Haunted Mansion party in Walt Disney World and a stay in the Cinderella Castle Suite.

To enter, submit a photo demonstrating your best take on one of the following Disney Parks-inspired theme categories:

You can enter via Twitter, Instagram, or through the contest website. As with all contests, be sure to read the official rules to ensure that your submission meets all requirements. Entries must be received by November 4, 2014; winners will be notified around November 20.

Fall and winter refurbishment update
We have some updated refurbishment information for the fall and winter:
- The refurbishment of Goofy's Sky School previously scheduled for December 1–8 has been removed from the calendar.
- Casey Jr.. Circus Train and Storybook Land Canal Boats are closed December 1–19 for refurbishment.
A cast member document says the Plaza Inn is closing October 27 through November 6 for refurbishment. And while cast members at the Disney Dine Line say this is an error and that the restaurant will be open, the Dine Line is telling callers that reservations for the Blue Bayou, Cafe Orleans, and Big Thunder Ranch BBQ are currently “on hold” for December due to a pending refurbishment. As we are now in the normal 60-day reservation window, reservations should now be open through December 6—so the hold is leaving callers trying to make dinner reservations for Candlelight Processional weekend understandably frustrated by the delay. We'll keep checking, and post an update when reservations open, or we have more information about a refurbishment.
Anna & Elsa's Boutique opens
Disney Studio 365 reopened as Anna & Elsa's Boutique Monday morning, bringing a dedicated Frozen store to Downtown Disney. Wall coverings and decorations were replaced during the renovation, with a heavy emphasis on glitter. A grouping of two mannequins dressed as Anna & Elsa, accompanied by a large Olaf sculpture, is destined to become a popular photo spot.

The store seems to carry every Frozen-themed item from the parks, along with a selection of winter accessories like tights and gloves. Unfortunately the store's cramped layout remains unchanged, a problem made more evident Monday as dozens of Frozen fans packed the store to snap up Anna dolls, Olaf shirts, and hard-to-find Elsa dresses.

Like Studio 365 and Club Libby Lu before it, Anna & Elsa's Boutique offers makeovers and hairstyling, although services are now limited to customers ages 3 through 12. Five packages are available, priced at $34.95 and $44.95. All of the packages for girls include a signature hair style, make-up application, nail polish, and hair accessory. The Olaf-themed Snow Boy package includes a spiky, frosted hair style for boys, and a choice of Olaf T-shirt.

Reservations are now available, and are booking fast according to stylists at the boutique, especially for Mickey's Halloween Party nights. To make a reservation up to 60 days in advance, call (714) 781-7895. A credit card is required at the time of booking, and a $10 cancellation fee applies within 24 hours of the appointment. Children must be accompanied by a parent throughout the appointment.

If you can brave the crowds, one of the best Frozen souvenirs at the resort is available at the photo booth tucked against the back wall of Anna & Elsa's Boutique. The photo booth offers 4″ x 6″ pictures for just $5, with your choice of Frozen borders. The whole process takes less than five minutes, and you get the photo immediately. The machine only accepts credit cards, so be prepared when you visit.

This annual fundraiser for CHOC Children's – Children's Hospital of Orange County raised over $2 million in 2013, and organizers are looking to raise even more in 2014. As the event draws closer, CHOC organizers have asked that we share details of the CHOC-Tober discount tickets available to walkers who participate in the 2014 CHOC Walk:
This discount represents a savings of up to $46 off of a one-day ticket, and up to $72 off of a one-day park hopper ticket. Participants must raise a minimum of $50 for CHOC to receive the wristband and be eligible to purchase the tickets, but walkers can fundraise or make a personal donation to cover this amount. Even if you pay the $50 out of pocket to register one family member, a family of five could still save over $300 by participating. This discount is one of the best perks of the CHOC Walk, and we encourage you to take advantage of it if possible.

This and that…
…Mickey's Fun Wheel at Disney California Adventure made national news last Thursday when the ride broke down, stranding riders for about 90 minutes. Ultimately, workers used a crank to manually turn the wheel and unload each of the 16 gondolas. If being stuck up to 150 feet in the air weren't bad enough, the incident happened in 90-degree weather. Riders reported via Twitter that Disney managers distributed bottled water, meal vouchers, and park tickets to each rider once they returned to solid ground.

…Dance the Magic has posted a tentative schedule for the Holiday parade taping at Disneyland. According to the website, participants will perform at Disney California Adventure on Friday, November 7, and at Disneyland on Saturday, November 8. Sunday, November 9, is a backup day in case filming needs to be rescheduled for weather or technical difficulties. As always, filming is subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
…Haunted Mansion merchandise continues to arrive at the Disneyland Resort, but not necessarily where you expect to find it. This new collection of housewares was spotted over the weekend in Disney California Adventure.

…Disneyland's First Aid center and the Wish Lounge reopen today, October 7. Both facilities have been operating from temporary locations on Main Street during construction of a backstage corridor between Town Square and Town Plaza. The Main Street Lockers reopens on October 31.
…Volunteer registration for the 2015 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events opens today October 7, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. (PDT), via the volunteer page on the runDisney website. Use the drop-down menu to select the Star Wars event. All volunteers must be 14 years old, and volunteers under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult throughout their volunteer shift. Volunteers receive a commemorative event T-shirt and a snack. Volunteers who complete one Sunday shift or any two Wednesday through Saturday shifts receive a 1-day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper ticket.

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 16–17. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 17–21 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- MouseAdventure Sugar Rush – Sunday, October 26. Registration is now open at MouseAdventure.com.
- Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 14–16. All events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
Winter
- Holiday parade taping at Disneyland – November 7–9. Disney never officially confirms when the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade are filmed at Disneyland, but cast members and the parent of a child performing in the annual production have verified that this year's taping takes place over Veteran's Day weekend. Filming is always subject to change with no notice, and we don't encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming.
- Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort – November 13 to January 6, 2015.
- Candlelight Processional – December 6 and 7 (unconfirmed). Performances times and narrator(s) have not yet been announced.
- Viva Navidad – Three Kings Day activities – January 2–6, 2015
2015
- Inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend – January 15–18, 2015. This new event weekend includes 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, along with runDisney kids races, event expo and Wookie Welcome party. All running events sold out within hours of registration. Details at the runDisney website.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 7–10, 2015 (Mother's Day weekend). All events are sold out. Details at the runDisney website.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out November 27–29, 2014; December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. Character Meet-and-Greet – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free 5″x7″ photograph per visit. Discounts for US Military |
2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
