2015 refurbishment schedules

Disney has released the refurbishment schedule for projects starting before January 12, 2015, and it definitely impacts anyone planning a trip in the first four months of the year. The schedule also raises some questions and fuels some rumors about coming changes.

The most noticeable closure is an 11-month “refurbishment” of Luigi's Flying Tires at Disney California Adventure. Disney has yet to address rumors that the ride will be torn out and replaced with a new attraction, but the company clearly plans some major change that requires the ride to be closed for almost a year.

Soarin' Over California is scheduled to close January 1 through May 14, a lengthy refurbishment that points to the long-awaited installation of digital projectors, and possibly the debut of a new film rumored to be in production.

It's hard to believe that it's been five years since World of Color debuted. The show will close January 7 through March 12 for refurbishment of the show platform, and, again, possibly programming of a new show.

Over at Disneyland, preparations for the 60th anniversary seem to begin January 12, with several lengthy refurbishments starting as soon as the holiday decorations disappear. The timing is unfortunate for those coming to town for the inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events, scheduled for January 15–18.

One interesting project takes place before Christmas: The December 1–18 closure of Storybook Land Canal Boats and Casey Jr. Circus Train.

  If your Disneyland Resort annual passport expires in December, 2014 or January 2015, be on the lookout for an invitation to a special annual passholder event. Targeted at passholders with soon-to-expire passes, and event is the fourth event in a series designed to improve passholder renewal and retention rates.

  Santa Mickey graces the front of the invitation, and the after-hours event on Tuesday, November 18 is said to be a kick off to the holiday season. But unlike the earlier three events, this party will be held at Disneyland, not Disney California Adventure.

  As of this writing, the passholder website has not been updated since the fall event to provide details about the next gathering, so we don't know the exact eligibility dates for this party.

  Once the dates are announced, and if your pass expires during the target window, visit the Annual Passholder website starting October 28 at 10 .m. Pacific to register for the event. Eligible passholders can invite up to five annual passholder guests regardless of whether the guests' passes expire during the same window. Be prepared with the names and pass numbers of your guests, as you must provide those while registering Registration closes November 15, 2014.

  Changing seasons

  The final two weeks of HalloweenTime bring more events around the Disneyland Resort.

  On Wednesday, October 22, Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen hosts “The Password is Murder,” an interactive murder mystery show. Tickets are $89 per person, including a champagne reception and four-course dinner. Call (714) 563-7261 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to make reservations.

  Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, the restaurant hosts its Annual Haunted Gingerbread House Building Workshop. Tickets are still available for this popular offering via the event website. The event is $53 per gingerbread kit, and includes admission for two people. Add additional people to a kit for $14 each.

  On Friday, October 31, Downtown Disney celebrates Halloween with special decorations and performers. Disneyland closes early this night for the final Mickey's Halloween Party, so it's a good idea to make dinner reservations if you aren't attending the party and want to dine in Downtown Disney without a two-hour wait.

  Tortilla Joe's commemorates Dia de los Muertos on Sunday, November 2 with a special food and drink menu all day. Children's crafts, face painting and cookie decorating are offered from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

  The AMC Downtown Disney 12 theaters are running a special movie series for October:

  • This Thursday, October 23, the theater is presenting a double-feature of the original classics, Frankenstein and The Mummy at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.
  • Starting Friday, October 24 and running through Halloween night, the theater is showing Disney's Maleficent. Check the theater for show times.
  • On Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1, you can see Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas back in theaters. Check the theater for show times.

  While HalloweenTime is still in full swing, there are signs of Christmas around the Disneyland Resort. The China Closet shop reset last week to feature holiday merchandise, including a new retro-inspired decor collection. The China Closet is the site of the newly expanded ornament personalization offering, available now through January 6. Personalization starts at $3, in addition to the price of the ornament, and design options vary based on the artist working that day.

  2015 Grad Nite dates

  If you're planning a visit in May or June of 2015, be sure to consult this schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately:

  • May 13, 15, 16, 18, 26, 27, 29, and 30
  • June 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, and 19

  For 2015, the event includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. after the park closes to “day guests.”

  Schools can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. Based on reports from last year, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to take in a movie and a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.

  Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.

  With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.

  Let it glow

  If you are a fan of the Glow with the Show Mickey ear hat and the technology that allows it to interact with shows like World of Color and Fantasmic, then you'll be thrilled with Disney's announcement that the product line is expanding this fall. Joining the collection are a Minnie Mouse headband, Mickey mitts, and a Sorcerer Mickey glow wand, now released under a new “Made with Magic” brand. Each item will cost $25, and will be sold at the Disneyland Resort and at Walt Disney World.

  These three new products address some of the issues that have kept Glow with the Show hats from being as popular as Disney had hoped. The Minnie Mouse headband offers both a female-friendly design, and will likely be more comfortable than the bulky ear hat. The Mickey mitts and wand will likely be more popular than the headwear, because each allows their owners to actually see the lighting effects on the product during the show, instead of just providing atmosphere color for the rest of the audience.

  Disney says the headband will arrive in late October, with the wand and gloves set to hit shelves in late November or early December.

  This and that…

  …Disney still won't say exactly when Hiro and Baymax will start greeting visitors at Disneyland, but the company released a few more details last week, including a location for the meet-and-greet. Hiro and Baymax will appear in “a re-creation of Hiro’s robotics workshop near the Starcade in Tomorrowland.”

  …Participating Disneyland Resort stores have a new purchase-with-purchase offer. A reversible tote is available for $19.99 with a purchase of $25 or more. A fleece throw blanket is $19.99 with a purchase of $40 or more.

  …The construction walls have come down in the esplanade between the two parks, showing that Disney has replaced the cracked terrazzo surrounding the compass rose with a slab of poured concrete. The repair doesn't blend well with the esplanade design, and is hopefully a temporary fix in advance of a more comprehensive overhaul.

  …Disney will hold auditions this week for violin players for a new show at Disney California Adventure. The description on the Disney Auditions website calls for “… skillful, singing musicians to playfully present songs to Disney California Adventure Park guests within an indoor, storytelling setting. Open positions are for live performances with a wandering comic group of troubadours who celebrate stories and characters through music and song,” and advises that “knowledge of Scandinavian-style folk music is a plus.”

  We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you.   This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

  Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

  2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132)	A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Tickets are blocked out November 27–29, 2014; December 24–31, 2014; and March 30 through April 4, 2015 . Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices.
  Four Day, One Park per Day Ticket – Regularly $250/$235 Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $289/$274	No discounts currently available to the general public. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any discounts are available through them.

Premier Annual Passport ($1,029) – valid at both Disneyland Resort and Florida's Walt Disney World Resort; includes parking. Premium Annual Passport ($699) – includes parking. Deluxe Annual Passport ($519) Southern California Annual Passport – currently unavailable Southern California Select Annual Passport ($289) Parking Add On ($159) – add-on to Deluxe, SoCal and SoCal Select passes; blocked out July 4 and December 31. Blockout Day Ticket – no longer available. Check with your employer, school or credit union to see if any other discounts are available through them.
  2014 Southern California CityPASS $328/$284 2014 Southern California CityPASS PLUS $362/$309	2014 Southern California CityPASS ($328/$284) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. 2014 Southern California CityPASS ($362/$309) – is the same as the CityPASS—a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego and a one-day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood—with the addition of one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2014. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website Prices listed above are valid until December 31, 2014.   Other Discounts

  Did we miss an offer? If you know of an authorized discount on Disneyland Resort tickets, standing offers for Annual Passholders from non-Disney vendors, or other promotions which might interest our readers, please drop us a note!

  Discounts for everyone	Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers: Disneyland Mickey Mouse Blanket for $19.95 with a purchase of $40 or more. Disneyland Mickey Mouse Tote Bag for $19.95 with a purchase of $25 or more. Landry's Select Club–members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10 percent discount on retail purchases. This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and now runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel.
  Discounts for Annual Passholders	Disneyland Resort merchandise – Disneyland extended the 20 percent merchandise discount offered to Premium annual passholders through December 31, 2014. 30% off rooms at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaii –Disneyland Resort annual passholders can take 30% off select rooms at Aulani, now through December 19. You can choose between a standard hotel room, which offers traditional hotel amenities, or Disney Vacation Club villas with kitchens and in-room laundry. Standard rooms start around $300 per night after discount, with upgrades to better views and larger villas available. A 2-bedroom villa with an ocean view can run more than $1000 per night, but includes a full kitchen and sleeps up to 9 people. The offer is valid most nights August 25 through November 25, and November 30 through December 19. Contact your travel agent, visit the Disneyland annual passholder website, or call (714) 520-7001.

  Discounts for US Military	2013–2014 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($129) – a discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2013–2014 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through September 25, 2014. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $129 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
